I would like to prevent my application from changing its orientation and force the layout to stick to &quot;portrait&quot;.

In the main.dart, I put:

Flutter: how to prevent device orientation changes and force portrait?

I download some data from internet in background thread (I use `AsyncTask`) and display a progress dialog while downloading. Orientation changes, Activity is restarted and then my AsyncTask is completed - I want to dismiss the progess dialog and start a new Activity. But calling dismissDialog sometimes throws an exception (probably because the Activity was destroyed and new Activity hasn&#39;t been started yet).

What is the best way to handle this kind of problem (updating UI from background thread that works even if user changes orientation)? Did someone from Google provide some &quot;official solution&quot;?

I&#39;m writing an android application that uses tabs with different contents (activities).
In one of these activities, I would like to lock the screen orientation to &quot;Landscape&quot;-mode,
but in the other activities, I want the normal orientation (according to sensor).

What I&#39;m doing now is that I&#39;m calling 

    setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);

when I switch to the landscape mode activity, and 

    setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_SENSOR);

when I switch back to the other activities. However, this doesn&#39;t seem to work,
the whole application locks up. What is the normal approach to this problem?

Lock screen orientation (Android)

I&#39;ve seen references to being able to specify two separate layout xml files for an activity, one for Portrait and one for Landscape.  I&#39;ve not been to find any information on how to do that though.  How do I specify for each activity which xml file is it&#39;s portrait layout and which is the Landscape layout?  

Is it also possible to specify different layouts for different screen sizes?  If so, how is this done?

The issue is the performance following rotation. The WebView has to reload the page, which can be a bit tedious.

I am using a Preview to display what the camera see&#39;s on the screen.

I can get everything working fine, surface created, surface set and the surface is displayed.

However it always displays the picture at an incorrect 90 degree angle in portrait mode.

Such as in the picture:

I am aware that using the following code will set the picture straight:

    setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);

However I have the Preview within an Activity that has other elements in it and it does not make sense for my Activity to be displayed in landscape mode. (Its disabled by default)

So I was wondering is there anyway to just change the orientation of the Preview? And leave the rest of my Activity correctly displayed in Portrait mode?

Or anyway to rotate the preview so that it is displayed correctly?

Android - Camera preview is sideways

Using the compatibility package to target 2.2 using Fragments.


After recoding an activity to use fragments in an app I could not get the orientation changes/state management working so I&#39;ve created a small test app with a single FragmentActivity and a single Fragment.

The logs from the orientation changes are weird, with multiple calls to the fragments OnCreateView.

I&#39;m obviously missing something - like detatching the fragment and reattaching it rather than creating a new instance, but I can&#39;t see any documentation which would indicate where I&#39;m going wrong.

Can anyone shed some light on what I&#39;m doing wrong here please.

Is there a way to lock orientation during runtime? For example I&#39;d like to allow the user to lock the screen to landscape if the user currently in landscape and toggle the menu option.

I&#39;ve been trying to get my head around the Android orientation sensors for a while.
I thought I understood it. Then I realised I didn&#39;t. Now I think (hope) I have a better feeling for it again but I am still not 100%. I will try and explain my patchy understanding of it and hopefully people will be able to correct me if I am wrong in parts or fill in any blanks.

I imagine I am standing at 0 degrees longitude (prime meridian) and 0 degrees latitude (equator). This location is actually in the sea off the coast of Africa but bear with me. I hold my phone in front of my face so that the bottom of the phone points to my feet; I am facing North (looking toward Greenwich) so therefore the right hand side of the phone points East towards Africa. In this orientation (with reference to the diagram below) I have the X-axis pointing East, the Z-axis is pointing South and Y-axis point to the sky.

Now the sensors on the phone allow you to work out the orientation (not location) of the device in this situation. This part has always confused me, probably because I wanted to understand how something worked before I accepted that it did just work. It seems that the phone works out its orientation using a combination of two different techniques.

Before I get to that, imagine being back standing on that imaginary piece of land at 0 degrees latitude and longitude standing in the direction mentioned above. Imagine also that you are blindfolded and your shoes are fixed to a playground roundabout. If someone shoves you in the back you will fall forward (toward North) and put both hands out to break your fall. Similarly if someone shoves you left shoulder you will fall over on your right hand. Your inner ear has &quot;gravitational sensors&quot; [(youtube clip)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmBB2bu1gEQ&amp;feature=related) which allow you to detect if you are falling forward/back, or falling left/right or falling down (or up!!). Therefore humans can detect alignment and rotation around the the same X and Z axes as the phone. 

Now imagine someone now rotates you 90 degrees on the roundabout so that you are now facing East. You are being rotated around the Y axis. This axis is different because we can&#39;t detect it biologically. We know we are angled by a certain amount but we don&#39;t know the direction in relation to the planet&#39;s magnetic North pole.
Instead we need to use a external tool... a magnetic compass. This allows us to ascertain which direction we are facing. The same is true with our phone.

Now the phone also has a 3-axes accelerometer. I have **NO** idea how they actually work but the way I visualise it is to imagine gravity as constant and uniform &#39;rain&#39; falling from the sky and to imagine the axes in the figure above as tubes which can detect the amount of rain flowing through. When the phone held upright all the rain will flow through the Y &#39;tube&#39;. If the phone is gradually rotated so its screen faces the sky the amount of rain flowing through Y will decrease to zero while the volume through Z will steadily increase until the maximum amount of rain is flowing through. Similarly if we now tip the phone onto its side the X tube will eventually collect the max amount of rain. Therefore depending on the orientation of the phone by measuring the amount of rain flowing through the 3 tubes you can calculate the orientation. 

The phone also has an electronic compass which behaves like a normal compass - its &quot;virtual needle&quot; points to magnetic north. Android merges the information from these two sensors so that whenever a `SensorEvent` of `TYPE_ORIENTATION` is generated the `values[3]` array has   
values[0]: Azimuth - (the compass bearing east of magnetic north)  
values[1]: Pitch, rotation around x-axis (is the phone leaning forward or back)  
values[2]: Roll,  rotation around y-axis (is the phone leaning over on its left or right side)

So I think (ie I don&#39;t know) the reason Android gives the azimuth (compass bearing) rather than the reading of the third accelerometer is that the compass bearing is just more useful. I&#39;m not sure why they deprecated this type of sensor as now it seems you need to register a listener with the system for `SensorEvent`s of type `TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD`. The event&#39;s `value[]` array needs to bepassed into `SensorManger.getRotationMatrix(..)` method to get a rotation matrix (see below) which is then passed into the `SensorManager.getOrientation(..)` method. 
Does anyone know why the Android team deprecated `Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION`? Is it an efficiency thing? That is what is implied in one of the comments to a similar [question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3514808/how-to-get-android-compass-reading/3515412#3515412) but you still need to register a different type of listener in the [development/samples/Compass/src/com/example/android/compass/CompassActivity.java](http://www.netmite.com/android/mydroid/cupcake/development/samples/Compass/src/com/example/android/compass/CompassActivity.java) example.

So above we have the three figures from the Android documentation, we&#39;ll call them A, B and C.

A = SensorManger.getRotationMatrix(..) method figure and represents the World&#39;s coordinate system

C= SensorManager.getOrientation(..) method figure

So my understanding is that A represents the &quot;world&#39;s coordinate system&quot; which I presume refers to the way  locations on the planet are given as a (latitude, longitude) couple with an optional (altitude). X is the [&quot;easting&quot;](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easting_and_northing) co-ordinate, Y is the [&quot;northing&quot;](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easting_and_northing) co-ordinate. Z points to the sky and represents altitude. 

The phones co-ordinate system is shown in figure B is fixed. Its Y axis always points out the top. The rotation matrix is being constantly calculated by the phone and allows mapping between the two. So am I right in thinking that the rotation matrix transforms the coordinate system of B to C? So when you call `SensorManager.getOrientation(..)` method you use the `values[]` array with values that correspond to figure C.
When the phone is pointed to the sky the rotation matrix is identity matrix (the matrix mathematical equivalent of 1) which means no mapping is necessary as the device is aligned with the world&#39;s coordinate system.


Ok. I think I better stop now. Like I said before I hope people will tell me where I&#39;ve messed up or helped people (or confused people even further!)


Android phone orientation overview including compass

Can someone please tell me the &quot;right&quot; or &quot;best&quot; approach to working with portrait and landscape interface orientations in iOS 8? It seems that all the functions I want to use for that purpose are deprecated in iOS 8, and my research has turned up no clear, elegant alternative. Am I really supposed to look at the width and height to determine for myself if we are in portrait or landscape mode?

For example, in my view controller, how should I implement the following pseudocode?

    if we are rotating from portrait to landscape then
      do portrait things
    else if we are rotating from landscape to portrait then

I am building an application that uses camera to take pictures. Here is my source code to do this:

Camera orientation issue in Android

When I start my app in portrait mode, it works fine. Then I rotate into landscape and it&#39;s scaled up.  To get it to scale correctly for the landscape mode I have to double tap on something twice, first to zoom all the way in (the normal double tap behavior) and again to zoom all the way out (again, the normal double tap behavior).  When it zooms out, it zooms out to the correct NEW scale for landscape mode.

Switching back to portrait seems to work more consistently; that is, it handles the zoom so that the scale is correct when the orientation changes back to portrait.

I am trying to figure out if this is a bug? or if this is  something that can be fixed with JavaScript?

With the viewport meta content, I am setting the initial-scale to 1.0 and I am NOT setting minimum or maximum scale (nor do I want to).  I am setting the width to device-width.

Any ideas? I know a lot of people would be grateful to have a solution as it seems to be a persistent problem.



How do I reset the scale/zoom of a web app on an orientation change on the iPhone?

I want to set the camera orientation according to the device orientation in Android but nothing seems to be working. I tried to rotate the Surface as well as the camera parameters but the camera preview in portrait mode always comes upside down. I would need to rotate it by 90 degree clockwise for it to be correct. Here is the code I am using right now which works in landscape mode only.

I was wondering how I can get the current device orientation in Swift? I know there are examples for Objective-C, however I haven&#39;t been able to get it working in Swift.

I am trying to get the device orientation and put that into an if statement.

Am I doing something wrong with the way I am reading the EXIF data from the jpeg?  It is not rotating the images as it is supposed to.

Is it possible to setup `UIImageView` to handle image orientation? When I set the `UIImageView` to image with orientation *RIGHT* (it is photo from camera roll), the image is rotated to right, but I want to show it in proper orientation, as it was taken.

Detecting iOS UIDevice orientation

I have a question on how to detect the device orientation on iOS. I don&#39;t need to receive change notifications, just the current orientation itself. This seems to be a rather simple question, but I haven&#39;t been able to wrap my head around it. Below is what I have done so far:

I want to install an Android OS to an Odroid-XU4 device and connect it to a vertical touchscreen through HDMI. I want the content be displayed as portrait and fit the screen.

I installed 4.4.4, 6.0 (Cyanogenmod 13.0) and 7.1(Lineage 14.1) android images to the Odroid. By default, all of them display the screen as landscape , so I must configure the OS to get it displayed as portrait.

I first used AndroidUtility (a tool included in the OS image) and set HDMI orientation as portrait. The screen is displayed great (portrait and full screen) with the 4.4.4 OS image. Unfortunately, 4.4.4 OS doesn&#39;t work for me because the device has to be a COSU and this needs 6.0 or above OS version.

But using AndroidUtility , the screen is displayed like this in both 6.0 and 7.1 OSs:

After looking it over forums, blogs... I found out that the solution should be editting these lines in OS build.prop config file:

    persist.demo.hdmirotation=portrait
    ro.sf.hwrotation=270 (I have tried 90 too)
    windowsmgr.support_rotation_270=true

Doing this, 7.1 OS version looks as portait and fills all the screen... but it&#39;s displayed upside down.

And 6.0 OS version looks not only turned, but also cropped:

self.previewView has a frame of (0,0,568,320), which is correct. self.previewLayer logs a frame of (0,0,568,320), which is theoretically correct. However, the camera display appears as a portrait rectangle in the middle of the landscape screen, and the orientation of the camera preview image is wrong by 90 degrees. What am I doing wrong? I need the camera preview layer to appear in the full screen, in landscape mode, and the image should be orientated correctly.






AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer orientation - need landscape

I&#39;m using MGSplitViewController and I&#39;m using`shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation` to control the size of the master view controller on rotation. 

It&#39;s all working fine on iOS 5 but on iOS 6 (both simulator and iPad) `shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation` is never called.

Is this a bug that I should expect to be fixed with the final release of iOS 6 or something that I&#39;m not aware of has changed?

Presenting and dismissing a modal VC was forcing the app to review its orientation, so `shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation` was getting called.

On load, the controller keeps staying in portrait. After rotating the device, the orientation changes just ok. But I need to make the controller to rotate automatically to landscape on load, thus the user will have to rotate the device to see the data correctly.

Another problem: after rotating the device back to portrait, the orientation goes to portrait, although I have specified in `supportedInterfaceOrientations` only `UIInterfaceOrientationMaskLandscape`. Why it happens?

Also, **NONE** of above 3 methods are getting called.

**Some (useful) data:**

 1. In my plist file I have specified 3 orientations - all but upside down.
 2. The project was started in Xcode 4.3 IOS 5. All classes including xibs were created before Xcode 4.5 IOS 6, now I use the last version.
 3. In plist file the status bar is set to visible.
 4. In xib file (the one I want to be in landscape) the status bar is &quot;None&quot;, the orientation is set to landscape.

I have a game in which the orientation of the device affects the state of the game. The user must quickly switch between Landscape, Portrait, and Reverse Landscape orientations. So far I&#39;ve been registering the game for orientation notifications via:

But it is far too slow - there seems to be about a second delay between rotating the phone and the notification actually being fired. The border is set around the entire window. And also, when I create another StackPanel it&#39;s added to the right of my previous StackPanel instead of being added under it. What&#39;s the reason for this?

The responsive design works great on iPad and iPhone, however when I flip the device from portrait to landscape, the site is zoomed in instead of adapting to the screen (pinching the screen works). 

What am I missing? Is this a viewport issue? Here&#39;s the only viewport code I have in my &lt;head&gt;:
