I need to run a shell script in Jenkins as root instead of the default user. What do I need to change?

How to run a script as root in Jenkins?

I&#39;m running Ubuntu 11.10 and have run `sudo apt-get install jenkins` to install Jenkins on this system.

I&#39;ve seen some tutorials on how to setup a reverse proxy (Apache, Nginx, etc), however this is a VM dedicated for just jenkins and I&#39;d like keep it as lean as possible while having jenkins running on port 80.

I&#39;ve found the upstart config in `/etc/init/jenkins.conf` and modified the port to 80 `env HTTP_PORT=80`

When I start jenkins via `service jenkins start`, `ps` reveals that it runs for a few seconds then terminates.

Is this because jenkins is running as the `jenkins` user on a privileged port? If so, how do I fix this? Any other ideas a welcome.

I have a java junit test that passes when run alone on a development machine. We also have a hudson job which runs all the tests, invoked via ant, on a Mac OS X 10.4 node with Java 1.5. The test was passing in the hudson build until recently but now (with no related code changes) one test fails everytime with the following error:

I&#39;m working with a small (4 person) development team on a C# project.  I&#39;ve proposed setting up a build machine which will do nightly builds and tests of the project, because I understand that this is a Good Thing.  Trouble is, we don&#39;t have a whole lot of budget here, so I have to justify the expense to the powers that be.  So I want to know:

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt; What kind of tools/licenses will I need?  Right now, we use Visual Studio and Smart Assembly to build, and Perforce for source control.  Will I need something else, or is there an equivalent of a cron job for running automated scripts?
&lt;li&gt; What, exactly, will this get me, other than an indication of a broken build?  Should I set up test projects in this solution (sln file) that will be run by these scripts, so I can have particular functions tested?  We have, at the moment, two such tests, because we haven&#39;t had the time (or frankly, the experience) to make good unit tests.
&lt;li&gt; What kind of hardware will I need for this?
&lt;li&gt; Once a build has been finished and tested, is it a common practice to put that build up on an ftp site or have some other way for internal access?  The idea is that this machine makes _the_ build, and we all go to it, but can make debug builds if we have to.  
&lt;li&gt; How often should we make this kind of build?
&lt;li&gt; How is space managed?  If we make nightly builds, should we keep around all the old builds, or start to ditch them after about a week or so?

EDIT:  I finally got it to work!  Hudson is completely fantastic, and FxCop is showing that some features we thought were implemented were actually incomplete.  We also had to change the installer type from Old-And-Busted vdproj to New Hotness WiX.

Basically, for those who are paying attention, if you can run your build from the command line, then you can put it into hudson.  Making the build run from the command line via MSBuild is a useful exercise in itself, because it forces your tools to be current.

How and why do I set up a C# build machine?

I&#39;d like for Jenkins to automagically fetch data from my private repository hosted on Github.
But I have no idea how to accomplish that task.. Tried the documentation, generating ssh-key for jenkins user and all what I can see is: &quot;unable to clone the repo&quot;. I&#39;ve checked URLs - they are valid.

Could someone please explain to me the idea of **artifacts** in the build process?

I have the workspace directory where I check out the code to compile and run my ant scripts etc. At the end, in my case, I get a jar file that&#39;s ready to install. Is that considered to be the artifact?

Where should I tell my build script to put the jar file? In the workspace directory? My jar file gets a unique filename depending on variables like `BUILD_ID` and such, how can I tell Jenkins which jar file to pick?

The path does not exist yet in my workspace, because the build script is supposed to create it, and of course, the `.jar` and `.properties` files are not there because they haven&#39;t been generated yet. Why does it give me an error then? Seems like I&#39;m missing something.

Also, does Jenkins delete the artifacts after each build (not the archived artifacts, I know I can tell it to delete those)? Otherwise it will clog the hard drive pretty quickly.

I&#39;m trying to configure my e-mail on Jenkins/Hudson, and I constantly receive the error:

    java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException: the trustAnchors parameter must be

I&#39;ve seen a good amount of information online about the error, but I have not gotten any to work. I&#39;m using Sun&#39;s JDK on Fedora Linux (not OpenJDK).

Here are a few things I&#39;ve tried. I tried following the advice from this [post][1], but copying the cacerts from Windows over to my Fedora box hosting Jenkins didn&#39;t work.  I tried following [this guide][2] as I&#39;m trying to configure Gmail as my SMTP server, but it didn&#39;t work either. I also tried to download and move those cacert files manually and move them over to my Java folder using a variation of the commands on [this guide][3].

I am open to any suggestions as I&#39;m currently stuck right now. I have gotten it to work from a Windows Hudson server, but I am struggling on Linux.

Anyone out there have experience with both Hudson and Bamboo? Any thoughts on the relative strengths and weaknesses of these products?

Okay, since folks keep mentioning other CI products I&#39;ll open this up further. Here are my general problem. I want to setup a CI system for a new project.  This project will likely have Java components (WARs and JARs), some python modules, and possibly even a .NET component. So I want a CI server that can:

 1. Handle multiple languages,
 2. Deploy artifacts to servers (i.e. deploy the war if all the unit tests pass.)
 3. I would also like something that integrated with a decent code coverage tool. 
 4. Good looking reports are nice, but not essential.
 5. Multiple notification mechanisms when things go wrong. 
 6. I&#39;m not worried about hosting. I&#39;ll either run it on a local server or on an Amazon instance. 
 7. Also, this maybe pie in the sky, but is there something that can also build iPhone apps?

The horror stories I found while searching for an answer for this one...

OK, I have a .sh script which pretty much does everything Jenkins supposed to do:

 - checks out sources from SVN
 - build the project
 - deploys the project
 - cleans after itself

So in Jenkins I only have to &#39;build&#39; the project by running the script in an Execute Shell command.
 The script is ran (the sources are downloaded, the project is build/deploy) but then it marks the build as a failure:

Even if the script was successfully ran! I tried closing the script with:

 - exit 0 (still marks it as failure)
 - exit 1 (marks it as failure, as expected)
 - no exit command at all (marks it as failure)

Myself and my group are horrendous at incrementing assembly version numbers and we frequently ship assemblies with 1.0.0.0 versions.  Obviously, this causes a lot of headaches.

We&#39;re getting a lot better with our practices via our [CI][1] platform and I&#39;d really like to set it up to auto increment the values within the `assemblyinfo.cs` file so that the versions of our assemblies are auto updated with the code changes in that assembly.

I had previously setup (before we found [Hudson][2]) a way to increment the value through either `msbuild` or the command line (can&#39;t remember), but with Hudson, that will update the SVN repository and trigger ANOTHER build. That would result in a slow infinite loop as Hudson polls SVN every hour.

Is having Hudson increment the version number a bad idea? What would be an alternative way to do it?

Ideally, my criteria for a solution would be one that:

 - Increments the build number in `assemblyinfo.cs` before a build
 - Only increments the build number in assemblies that have changed.  This may not be possible as Hudson wipes out the project folder every time it does a build
 - Commits the changed assemblyinfo.cs into the code repository (currently [VisualSVN][3])
 - Does not cause Hudson to trigger a new build the next time it scans for changes

Working this out in my head, I could easily come up with a solution to most of this through batch files / commands, but all of my ideas would cause Hudson to trigger a new build the next time it scans.  I&#39;m not looking for someone to do everything for me, just point me in the right direction, maybe a technique to get Hudson to ignore certain SVN commits, etc.

Everything I&#39;ve found so far is just an article explaining how to get the version number automatically incremented, nothing takes into account a CI platform that could be spun into an infinite loop.

I am running Jenkins from user `jenkins` thats has `$PATH` set to something and when I go into Jenkins web interface, in the *System Properties* window (`http://$host/systemInfo`) I see a different `$PATH`.

Both [Hudson][1] and [Teamcity][2] seem to be free but Teamcity seems slicker and with more support.

I&#39;ve been dealing with the problem of scaling CI at my company and at the same time trying to figure out which approach to take when it comes to CI and multiple branches. Sorry for the &#39;svn&#39; style - we are in a process of migration from SVN to GIT (including our CI Jenkins environment).

What we need is to be able to make Jenkins to checkout (or should I say clone?) the GIT project (repository?) into a specific directory. We&#39;ve tried some refspecs magic but it wasn&#39;t too obvious to understand and use successfully.

Furthermore, if in the same Jenkins project we need to checkout several private GitHub repositories into several separate dirs under a project root, how can we do it please?

I&#39;m currently using jenkins/hudson for continuous integration a large mostly C++ project.  We have separate projects for trunk and every branch.  Also, there are some related projects for the Java code, but the setup for those are fairly basic right now (we may do more later though).  The C++ projects do the following:

 * Builds everything with options for whether to reconfigure, do a clean build, or use a fresh checkout
 * Optionally builds and runs all tests
 * Optionally runs all tests using Valgrind&#39;s memcheck
 * Runs cppcheck
 * Generates doxygen documentation
 * Publishes reports: unit tests, valgrind, cppcheck, compiler warnings, SLOC, open tasks, and code coverage (using gcov, gcovr, and the cobertura plugin)
 * Deploys code nightly or on demand to a test environment and a package repository

Everything is configurable for automatic builds and optional for on demand builds.  Underneath, there&#39;s a bash script that controls much of this, which farther depends on our build system, which uses automake and autoconf along with custom bash scripts.

We started using Hudson (at the time) because that&#39;s what the Java guys were using and we just wanted nightly builds.  Since then, we&#39;ve added a lot more and continue to add more.  In some ways Hudson is great, but certainly isn&#39;t ideal.

I&#39;ve looked at other solutions and the only one that looks like it could be a replacement is buildbot.  Would buildbot be better for this situation?  Is the investment worth it since we&#39;re already using Hudson?  Why?

**EDIT**: Someone asked why I haven&#39;t found Hudson/Jenkins to be ideal.  The short answer is that everything can be improved.  I&#39;m simply wondering if Jenkins is the best current solution for my use case or whether there is something better (buildbot?) that would be easier to maintain in the long run even as new requirements come up.

How are environment variables used in Jenkins with Windows Batch Command?

Recently, in our company, we decided to use _Ansible_ for deployment and continuous integration. But when I started using Ansible I didn&#39;t find modules for building Java projects with Maven, or modules for running JUnit tests, or JMeter tests. 

So, I&#39;m in a doubtful state: it may be I&#39;m using Ansible in a wrong way. 

When I looked at Jenkins, it can do things like build, run tests, deploy. The missing thing in Hudson is creating/deleting an instance in cloud environments like AWS.

So, in general, for what purposes do we need to use Ansible/Jenkins? For CI do I need to use a combination of Ansible and Jenkins?

I have a couple of jobs that use a shared resource (database), which sometimes can cause builds to fail in the (rare) event that the jobs happen to get triggered simultaneously. 

Given jobs A through E, for example, is there any way to specify that A and C **should never be run concurrently**?

Other than the aforementioned resource, the builds are independent of each other (not e.g. in a upstream/downstream relation).

A &quot;brute-force&quot; way would be limiting number of executors to one, but that obviously is less than ideal if most jobs could well be executed concurrently and there&#39;s no lack of computing resources on the build server.

I have installed both Xcode 3.2 and Xcode 4.0.2 on the same machine, which uses Hudson for automated CI (continuous integration) builds. When I say that both were installed, what I mean by that is that I can use both Xcode 3 and Xcode 4 simultaneously or interchangeably. They both exist on the machine, as I did a custom install for Xcode 4 without overwriting Xcode 3 (supposedly).

 - Do command line calls to &#39;xcodebuild&#39; invoke Xcode 3 or Xcode 4?
   - Does that question even make sense? Someone who may or may not be knowledgable on the topic is requesting that some projects be built with 3 and some with 4.
 - If so, how do I force it to use 3 or 4?
  - alternatively, is there a separate location where Xcode 3&#39;s &#39;xcodebuild&#39; is stored vs. where Xcode4&#39;s &#39;xcodebuild&#39; is stored? If there is, I can just use a different path in my build script.

I using ant exec task to execute xcodebuild  to build some iOS projects hudson. I would like to be able to crate script that way that allows not to specify sdk version, because after updating sdk on hudson slave or my iOS projects all my projects failing....

There is is nice option in xcode since sdk 4.2 in target setup `Base SDK - Latest iOS`

and I don&#39;t have to provide `-sdk` param in xcodebuild command, but then (i think) it&#39;s taken from xcode project and it&#39;s bad because then some one can  change target from simulator to device accidentally during commit.

I need something that is constant. I will prefer not to use env variable because I would like to be able to run this ant task also on dev machines and would like not have to renember about setting it on all machines.

I need something like `-sdk iphoneosLatest`. My only idea is to pare output of `xcodebuild -showsdks` with some script, but I don&#39;t like this idea.

parameter for xcodebuild for using latest sdk.

I&#39;m currently trying to automate Django tests using Hudson CI, and am struggling to find an option that will automatically destroy the test database if it already exists (typically it will ask for confirmation to destroy it, which the automatic testing obviously cannot provide for).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

How do you tag your release versions in git?

Now I have each release identified by build number, but they increment even if there are no changes in the repo. My idea is to have it generated automatically on successful deployment on staging server. E.g.

- run Hudson build
- when successful, add new tag, i.e. 1.0-1
- on next *successful* build add next tag, 1.0-2
- version tag is displayed then in site footer

This would require:

- Hudson to manage next version numbers
- or script to store last tag in some file
- or parse git tags to determine last

Any tips?
