I want to have at least two setups: 

**I. Development setup** - load scripts from separate files, without concatenation,

so my index.html would look something like:

When you build with maven on a multicore / multi-CPU machine it would often be possible to build different subprojects in parallel. Is there a way to do this with maven? Is there a plugin for this / whatever?

I&#39;m working with a small (4 person) development team on a C# project.  I&#39;ve proposed setting up a build machine which will do nightly builds and tests of the project, because I understand that this is a Good Thing.  Trouble is, we don&#39;t have a whole lot of budget here, so I have to justify the expense to the powers that be.  So I want to know:

&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt; What kind of tools/licenses will I need?  Right now, we use Visual Studio and Smart Assembly to build, and Perforce for source control.  Will I need something else, or is there an equivalent of a cron job for running automated scripts?
&lt;li&gt; What, exactly, will this get me, other than an indication of a broken build?  Should I set up test projects in this solution (sln file) that will be run by these scripts, so I can have particular functions tested?  We have, at the moment, two such tests, because we haven&#39;t had the time (or frankly, the experience) to make good unit tests.
&lt;li&gt; What kind of hardware will I need for this?
&lt;li&gt; Once a build has been finished and tested, is it a common practice to put that build up on an ftp site or have some other way for internal access?  The idea is that this machine makes _the_ build, and we all go to it, but can make debug builds if we have to.  
&lt;li&gt; How often should we make this kind of build?
&lt;li&gt; How is space managed?  If we make nightly builds, should we keep around all the old builds, or start to ditch them after about a week or so?
&lt;li&gt; Is there anything else I&#39;m not seeing here?

I realize that this is a very large topic, and I&#39;m just starting out.  I couldn&#39;t find a duplicate of this question here, and if there&#39;s a book out there I should just get, please let me know.

EDIT:  I finally got it to work!  Hudson is completely fantastic, and FxCop is showing that some features we thought were implemented were actually incomplete.  We also had to change the installer type from Old-And-Busted vdproj to New Hotness WiX.

Basically, for those who are paying attention, if you can run your build from the command line, then you can put it into hudson.  Making the build run from the command line via MSBuild is a useful exercise in itself, because it forces your tools to be current.

If I try to build a lone module I get the same error only replace module1, with whatever module it was.

Have them all referencing the parent in their poms.

Maven: Non-resolvable parent POM

I would like to ask you which automated build environment you consider better, based on practical experience. I&#39;m planning to do some .Net and some Java development, so I would like to have a tool that supports both these platforms.

I&#39;ve been reading around and found out about [CruiseControl.NET][1], used on stackoverflow development, and [TeamCity][2] with its support for build agents on different OS-platforms and based on different programming languages. So, if you have some practical experience on both of those, which one do you prefer and why?

Currently, I&#39;m mostly interested in the ease of use and management of the tool, much less in the fact that CC is open source, and TC is a subject to licensing at some point when you have much projects to run (because, I need it for a small amount of projects).

Also, if there is some other tool that meets the above-mentioned and you believe it&#39;s worth a recommendation - feel free to include it in the discussion.

From what I&#39;ve found, you&#39;re supposed to do things like

* manually edit your `.csproj` file to add `&lt;BuildPackage&gt;true&lt;/BuildPackage&gt;` to include dependencies
* manually create a `.nuspec` file and manually [list your dependencies][3] ([similar ?][4])
* manually run `nuget pack` on your `.nuspec` file

But everything is manual, which is stupid.  Even the semi-automatic solutions are still awkward or half-manual:

Can I ignore a folder on svn checkout? I need to ignore DOCs folder on checkout at my build server.

There is a lot of talk on the internet about how Maven is bad. I have been using some features of Maven for a few years now and the most important benefit in my view is the dependency management. 

Maven documentation is less than adequate, but generally when I need to accomplish something I figure it out once and then it works (for example when I implemented signing the jars). I don&#39;t think that Maven is great, but it does solve some problems that without it would be a genuine pain.

So, why does Maven have such a bad rep and what problems with Maven can I expect in the future? Maybe there are much better alternatives that I don&#39;t know about? (For example, I never looked at Ivy in detail.)

NOTE:  This is not an attempt to cause an argument.  It is an attempt to clear the FUD.

We are doing a web application with AngularJS and we like the idea of using Bower for Dependency Management and Grunt for building, running tests etc. ([Yeoman](http://yeoman.io/))

The server is done with Java using Maven, so of course we would like with a simple `mvn install` build everything (web application + server)

So what approach you took and why?

1) Treat them as two different applications, which in fact they are. So using different building methods/tools is acceptable.

2) Forget about Grunt Bower, use Maven plugins to build, run tests, manage dependencies for the web application. If that is the case, which ones?

3) Use Maven exec plugin to call Grunt to build the front-end webapp. I see this more as a hack than a solution.

4) Other.

Approach easier to integrate with Jenkins is a plus.

Most Stackoverflow answers that I have found in regards to the Perl build process and unit testing and code coverage simply point me to CPAN for the documentation there.  There&#39;s absolutely nothing wrong with pointing to CPAN modules because that&#39;s where the full documentation is supposed to reside.  I&#39;ve had trouble finding complete working code examples in many cases, though.  

I&#39;ve been searching all over the Internet for actual working code samples that I can download or paste into my IDE, like your typical tutorial &quot;Hello World&quot; example source code, but of an example that demonstrates the build process with unit testing and code coverage analysis.  Does anyone have a small example of a complete working project that demonstrates these technologies and processes?  

*(I do have a small working example and I will answer my own question with it, but there are probably other SO users who have better examples than the ones I came up with.)*

I have the impression, that in the .NET-world, there is no real need for a Maven-like tool.

I am aware that there is [Byldan][1] and NMaven (is it still alive?), but I have not yet seen a real-world project that uses them.

Also in most .NET projects I have worked on, there never was voiced an need for a Maven-like tool. The problems Maven maven is addressing (automatic dependency-resolution, conventions based build structure ...) seem not to be so important in .NET.

Is my perception correct?

Why is there no need for Maven in .NET?

I&#39;m trying to write a little build script, and want to determine if the includes are system includes or not. So I want __g++__ to tell me the include path&#39;s it&#39;s using. 

`cpp -v` seems the obvious best shot, but it doesn&#39;t give me the C++ paths.

So I tried:
 
    g++ -Xpreprocessor -v  

Which doesn&#39;t work quite right - __g++__ captures the `-v` for it&#39;s own verbose output.

I am looking into using Git on a massive scale.  I was hoping to increase adoption and make things easier by calling the `master` branch `trunk`. 

This can and will give SVN users some feelings of comfort.  I know I can create a branch called `trunk`, but that seems to deviate from the Git norms and might cause some users to get confused.  

I know that I can also create and delete tags to my heart&#39;s content but when I checkout those tags it tells me it is a non local branch which is just fine with me but probably not what I want to be doing.  

I am a total Git newb but a seasoned professional at release and build systems.  

**What I want to do is to be able to call master trunk.**  I have seen the ability to alias commands – does this apply for the names of versioned objects as well?  

I know `git-svn` exists and other tools but the overhead of layered repository systems frightens me.

WiX 3.0 throws error 217, while being executed by continuous integration

I have installed the most recent version of Boost in `/usr/local` (with includes in `/usr/local/include/boost` and libraries in `/usr/local/lib/boost`) and I am now attempting to install Wt from source, but CMake (version 2.6) can&#39;t seem to find the Boost installation. It tries to give helpful suggestions about setting BOOST_DIR and Boost_LIBRARYDIR, but I haven&#39;t been able to get it to work by tweaking these variables.

The most recent error message that I get is that it can&#39;t find the libraries, but it seems to indicate that it is using &quot;/usr/local/include&quot; for the include path, which isn&#39;t correct (and I can&#39;t seem to fix it). Is there a solution for this off the top of their head, or do I need to go mucking around inside CMake to figure it out?

In my work I deal mostly with C# code nowadays, with a sprinkle of java from time to time. What I absolutely love about Eclipse (and I know people using it daily love it even more) is a sophisticated code formatter, able to mould code into any coding standard one might imagine. Is there such a tool for C#? Visual Studio code formatting (Crtl+K, Crtl+D) is subpar and StyleCop only checks the source without fixing it.

My dream tool would run from console (for easy inclusion in automated builds or pre-commit hooks and for execution on Linux + Mono), have text-file based configuration easy to store in a project repository and a graphical rule editor with preview - just like the Eclipse Code Formatter does.

Is there an automatic code formatter for C#?

Running `xcodebuild` from the console will bring you very verbose output and I wasn&#39;t able to locate any options for limit its output in order to display only warnings and errors.

I&#39;m looking for a way to capture the `xcodebuild` output and filter it. It would prefer a Python solution that will work with pipes but I&#39;m open to other approaches as long they are command line based solutions.

I&#39;m trying to generate a C# project within an existing C++ CMake code base on Windows. After some research, I could find only two projects that built their own CSharp compilers for CMake:
[gdcm][2] and [kde][1].

I tried both of them. Unfortunately, the first one failed to generate a C# project. Instead it created a VS C++ project with cs files in it, and because of C++ flags set for linker, the build always failed with errors. After experimenting with the sample project they provided, I wonder whether this could be due to a limitation of the &quot;Visual Studio 8 2005&quot; code generator?

The second project was primarily aimed at Mono, so I wasn&#39;t successful with it either.

Has anyone had a positive experience with building C# projects using one of those CMake modules or something else?

Generate C# project using CMake

I know there is something like `find_package(Threads)` but it doesn&#39;t seem to make a difference (at least by itself). For now I&#39;m using `SET(CMAKE_C_FLAGS ${CMAKE_C_FLAGS} &quot;-pthread&quot;)`, but it doesn&#39;t look like a correct solution to me.

We decided to switch from VS integrated setup to WiX.

However, what we currently do is use projects output files as the input for the setup project. This lets us easily add Application Files to a directory (for images, samples, and other resources...) and those files are automatically added to the setup when we build.

I could not find any similar feature in WiX. WiX seems to require one Directory entry and one File entry for each and every directory and file. This would require us to change the WiX source everytime a file is added which, to my eyes, is prohibitive since we have so many of them.

Is there any integrated way of doing that with WiX or do I have to write my own task that will create a WiX source before calling candle?

Idea of above project structure is that we have multiple projects which contains subprojects, each project can have dependencies to other projects. Also subprojects inside the project can have dependencies to other subprojects within the same project. Projects will be specified in the settings.gradle in the root. Also settings.gradle  inside each project will say what are the subprojects of that particular project. 


My settings.gradle in the root would looks like

    include &#39;Project1&#39;,
             &#39;Project2&#39;

and Project1 settings.gradle will looks like

    include &#39;SubProject11&#39;
             &#39;SubProject12&#39;

other dependency orders are defined in the respective build.gradle files
If I rand gradle clean build install inside the root location(Standar location) it doesn&#39;t seems to use configurations in the Project level settings.gradle file.

What I&#39;m doing here wrong?

Multiple settings gradle files for multiple projects building

I have a the following structure:

    src/
        modules/
            module1/
                js/
                    main.js
                scss/
                    main.scss
                index.html
            module2/
                js/
                    main.js
                scss/
                    main.scss
                index.html

I&#39;d like to run a grunt task to copy these out to the following structure:

    dev/
        js/
            module1.js
            module2.js
        css/
            module1.css
            module2.css
        module1.html
        module2.html

Is there a way to do this with an existing grunt plugin? If not, how could I achieve this?

I&#39;m starting to use WiX in order to do automated builds to create msi&#39;s of my c# projects and am experiencing the error **&quot;Undefined preprocessor variable &#39;$(var.MyProject.TargetDir)&#39;&quot;**

I am using the latest WiX v3.0.5419. Inside my wxs file I am trying to use pre-processor variables that are listed on this webpage ([**http://blogs.msdn.com/jrock/archive/2008/01/29/complete-list-of-candle-preprocessor-variables.aspx**][1])

I have added the reference for MyProject to the .wixproj and if I open it up in Notepad I can see the reference.

This is my nant build script that I use to create the msi. Maybe it&#39;s because the .wixproj knows about the project reference which isn&#39;t used in the build?

WiX undefined preprocessor variable

When defining sequential build steps I use the `depends` attribute of the `target` element. I have recently seen an ant file, where the build sequence was defined by `antcall` elements inside the targets. 
To illustrate : 

    &lt;target name=&quot;a&quot; depends=&quot;b&quot;&gt;
    ...&lt;/target&gt;

vs

    &lt;target name=&quot;a&quot;&gt;
    &lt;antcall target=&quot;b&quot;/&gt;
    ...&lt;/target&gt;

Is there a real difference between the two approaches? Is one of them preferable?
