I am using following script, which uses case statement to find the server.

I have a working query that is grouping data by hardware model and a result, but the problem is there are many *&quot;results&quot;*.  I have tried to reduce that down to *&quot;if result = 0  then keep as 0, else set it to 1&quot;*.  This generally works, but I end up having:

Day will always be defined in the `WHERE` clause, so it will not vary. `name, type, result(case)` and `count` will vary. In short, for any given model I want only 1 row per *&quot;type + case&quot;* combo. As you can see in the first result set I have 3 rows for `modelA` that have `type=1` and `case=1` (because there are many *&quot;result&quot;* values that I have turned into *0=0 and anything else=1*). I want that to be represented as 1 row with the count aggregated as in example data set 2.

GROUP BY + CASE statement

I&#39;m trying to create a switch statement but I can&#39;t seem to be able to use an expression that gets evaluated (rather than a set string/integer). I can easily do this with if statements but case should hopefully be faster.

Expression inside switch case statement

Looking from a programmer&#39;s point of view then shell script is just another programming language, where one has to learn and conform to the rules of the language. However, I have to admit that this syntax is the weirdest style I have ever seen in a rather commonly used language. Did the shell take this syntax from an older language that it descents from? Is there a special implication / meaning in the syntax?

As an example, here is a little snippet that I take from [another post][1] on SO

Looking at this, firstly I can see that `case` ends with `esac`, which is its reversed form (like `if` ending in `fi`). Secondly I understand that each case is followed by a `)`. Fair enough, but why on earth do I need two `;` at the end of each statement? I would also say that the `)` without an accompanying `(` is ugly.

I&#39;m looking for more information about the historical aspect of the language, but I&#39;m open for technical reasons as well.

What is the reason for the weird syntax of the &quot;case&quot; statement in a bash/zsh script?

I am a newbie when it comes to JavaScript and it was my understanding that using one SWITCH/CASE statements is faster than a whole bunch of IF statements.  

However, I want to use a SWITCH/CASE statement with two variables.

My web app has two sliders, each of which have five states.  I want the behavior to be based on the states of these two variables.  Obviously that is a whole heck of a lot of IF/THEN statements.

One way I thought about doing it was concatenating the two variables into one and then I could SWITCH/CASE that.

Is there a better way of accomplishing a SWITCH/CASE using two variables ?

Is it possible to combine the `CASE` statement and the `LIKE` operator in a MySQL `SELECT` statement?

For Example, I am trying to query a database that stores data in a single column in either one of two formats (this is awful and hurts my head, but I cant change the data so it is what it is.). So sometimes the column `numbers` would have data like &quot;6901xxxxxxxx&quot; and sometimes it would have data like &quot;91xxxxxxxxxxx&quot;.

What I would like to do is query the data like so -

PostgreSQL Crosstab Query

The following image is a part of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 System Views. From the image we can see that the relationship between `sys.partitions` and `sys.allocation_units` depends on the value of `sys.allocation_units.type`. So to join them together I would write something similar to this:

            JOIN sys.partitions p
                ON i.index_id = p.index_id 
            JOIN sys.allocation_units a

But the upper code gives a syntax error. I guess that&#39;s because of the `CASE` statement.

Using Case/Switch and GetType to determine the object

We have a log table that has a message column that sometimes has an exception stack trace. I have some criteria that determines if the message has this. We do not want to show these messages to the customer but instead have a message like:

where xxx etc is a guid column in the table. I am writing stored proc like this:

`RequestID` is a Guid datatype in SQL Server and does not convert to string here. I&#39;ve seen some code on how to convert a Guid to string, but it is multi-lined and I don&#39;t think it would work in a case statement. Any ideas?

The result is the same content as source table, nothing has happened and I get no error message in pg_log files. It might be a syntax error, or a problem with using multiple conditions within WHEN clauses?

In my opinion, the first function is the best implementation because it is the most concise. But is there anything about the other two implementations that would make them preferable? And by extension, how would you choose between using guards, if-then-else statements, and cases?

I have a variable in a dataframe where one of the fields typically has 7-8 values.  I want to collpase them 3 or 4 new categories within a new variable within the dataframe.  What is the best approach? 

I would use a CASE statement if I were in a SQL-like tool but not sure how to attack this in R.

I have a Bash script that performs actions based on the value of a variable. The general syntax of the case statement is:

    case ${command} in

I&#39;d like to execute a default routine if no command is provided, and `do_help` if the command is unrecognized. I tried omitting the case value thus:

    case ${command} in
       )       do_default ;;
       ...
       *)      do_help ;;
    esac

The result was predictable, I suppose:

    syntax error near unexpected token `)&#39;

Then I tried using a regex:

    case ${command} in
       ^$)     do_default ;;
       ...
       *)      do_help ;;
    esac

With this, an empty `${command}` falls through to the `*` case.

Why doesn&#39;t the compiler automatically put break statements after each code block in the switch? Is it for historical reasons? When would you want multiple code blocks to execute?

Why do we need break after case statements?

I have a two tables.  One has manufacturer information and includes the regions where they can sell.  The other has their products for sale.  We have to limit visibility of the product based on the regions.  This is like Netflix have videos in their system that can only be viewed Everywhere (1), only in Canada (2), only in USA (3).

I am trying to make a query that tells me where the product can be viewed based on the settings in the manufacturer table.

For example, in the manufacturer table, there are two fields called expose_new and expose_used each of which will have a value of  1,2 or 3 to limit where their new or used videos can seen.

When the videos are added, they are not assigned an &#39;expose&#39; value and this is meant to be done on the fly when adding them to our index depending on the current manufacturer&#39;s expose_new or expose_used values.

**What I am trying to get is the item details and the computed value for where it can be seen based on whether it is new or used and the rule/value assigned to the manufacturer for all their new or used products.**  I need this single digit on a per-product basis to conditionally display it in a list.

The following does not work, but you will get the idea of what I am trying to do.  I have tried this with CASE statements and the following WRONG IF/ELSEIF statement.

Any help to debugger this and point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

How do I use properly CASE..WHEN in MySQL

Is it possible to do the following:

    IF [a] = 1234 THEN JOIN ON TableA 
    ELSE JOIN ON TableB

If so, what is the correct syntax?

    END CASE

However, I don&#39;t understand how this works, possibly because I&#39;m thinking about it as about an `if` statement.

If I have a field in table `user_role`, for example, which contains names like &quot;Manager&quot;, &quot;Part Time&quot; etc., how do I generate a field `role_order` with a different number depending on the role. In the case of this example, &quot;if user_role = &#39;Manager&#39; then role_order = 5&quot;.

How does MySQL CASE work?

I have a database table called &#39;**tbl_transaction**&#39; with the following definition:
    
    id INT(11) Primary Key
    action_type ENUM(&#39;Expense&#39;, &#39;Income&#39;)
    action_heading VARCHAR (255)
    action_amount FLOAT

I would like to generate two columns: `Income Amt` and `Expense Amt`.

Is it possible to populate the columns conditionally, using only a SQL Query, such that the output appears in the correct column, depending on whether it is an Expense item or an Income item?

For example:
    
    ID        Heading         Income Amt       Expense Amt
    1         ABC             1000             -
    2         XYZ             -                2000


I&#39;m using MySQL as the database. I&#39;m trying to use the CASE statement to accomplish this.

Case statement in MySQL

Given this method, does this represent some egregious stylistic or semantic faux pas:

    private double translateSlider(int sliderVal) {
        switch (sliderVal) {
            case 0:
                return 1.0;
            case 1:
                return .9;
            case 2:
                return .8;
            case 3:
                return .7;
            case 4:
                return .6;
            default:
                return 1.0;
        }
    }  
  

It&#39;s clearly not in line with the Java tutorials [here][1].  
  
However, It&#39;s clear, concise and so far has yielded exactly what I need.  Is there a compelling, pragmatic reason to create a local variable, assign a value to it within each case, add a break to each case and return the value at the end of the method?
