I am a noob when it comes to SQL syntax. 

I have a table with lots of rows and columns of course :P
Lets say it looks like this:
 

          AAA BBB CCC DDD
    -----------------------
    Row1 | 1   A   D   X
    Row2 | 2   B   C   X
    Row3 | 3   C   D   Z


Now I want to create an advanced select statement that gives me this combined (pseudo SQLish here):

    select &#39;Test1&#39;, * from TABLE Where CCC=&#39;D&#39; AND DDD=&#39;X&#39;
    select &#39;Test2&#39;, * from TABLE Where CCC&lt;&gt;&#39;D&#39; AND DDD=&#39;X&#39;

The output would be:

    Test1, 1, A, D, X
    Test2, 2, B, C, X


How would I combine those two select statements into one nice select statement?

Would it work if I complicated the SQL like below (because my own SQL statement contains an exists statement)? I just want to know how I can combine the selects and then try to apply it to my somewhat more advanced SQL.

which gives me a result. But I want to combine it with a copy of this select statement with an added AND on the end and the &#39;Status&#39; field would be changed with a string like &#39;DELETED&#39;.

    select &#39;DELETED&#39;, * from WorkItems t1
    where  exists (select 1 from workitems t2 where t1.TextField01=t2.TextField01 AND (BoolField05=1) )

How do I combine 2 select statements into one?

    class Foo{

Java compiler understands the condition of the if statement is always true and therefore y will always be initialized. No compile error, as expected.

    class Bar{
    	public static void main(String args[]){
    		final int x;
            x=101;

    		int y;		
    		if(x&gt;100){
    			y=-1;
    		}
    		System.out.println(y);
    	}
    }

But when I break the declaration and initialization of x into two lines, the compiler does not seem to get that the condition is always true and y will always be initialized.

    final int x;
	x=101;
	byte b;
	b=x;
	System.out.println(b);
Same thing happens here and the compiler gives a loss of precision error.

    final int x=101;
	byte b;
	b=x;
	System.out.println(b);
Again, the compiler can understand that x is inside the range of b.




Why does the Java compiler not understand this variable is always initialized?

Sometimes when making conditionals, I need the code to do nothing, e.g., here, I want Bash to do nothing when `$a` is greater than &quot;10&quot;, print &quot;1&quot; if `$a` is less than &quot;5&quot;, otherwise, print &quot;2&quot;:

How do I negate a test with regular expressions in a bash script?

I have a data.frame in R.  I want to try two different conditions on two different columns, but I want these conditions to be inclusive. Therefore, I would like to use &quot;OR&quot; to combine the conditions.  I have used the following syntax before with lot of success when I wanted to use the &quot;AND&quot; condition.

    my.data.frame &lt;- data[(data$V1 &gt; 2) &amp; (data$V2 &lt; 4), ]
But I don&#39;t know how to use an &#39;OR&#39; in the above.

Guys I have a couple of questions:

 1. Is there a performance difference in JavaScript between a `switch` statement and an `if...else`?   
 2. If so why?
 3. Is the behavior of `switch` and `if...else` different across browsers? (FireFox, IE, Chrome, Opera, Safari)

The reason for asking this question is it seems that I get better performance on a `switch` statement with approx 1000s cases in Firefox.

Unfortuantly this is not my code the Javascript is being produced serverside from a compiled library and I have no access to the code. The method that is producing the javascript is called 

    CreateConditionals(string name, string arrayofvalues, string arrayofActions)

note `arrayofvalues` is a comma separated list.

what it produces is

    function [name] (value) {
      if (value == [value from array index x]) {
         [action from array index x]
      }
    }

Note: where `[name]` = the name passed into the serverside function

Now I changed the output of the function to be inserted into a TextArea, wrote some JavaScript code to parse through the function, and converted it to a set of `case` statements. 

finally I run the function and it runs fine but performance differs in IE and Firefox.






Javascript switch vs. if...else if...else

I personally like the _exclusive or_, `^`, operator when it makes sense in the context of boolean checks because of its conciseness.  I much prefer to write

    
    if (boolean1 ^ boolean2)
    {
      //do it
    }

than

    if((boolean1 &amp;&amp; !boolean2) || (boolean2 &amp;&amp; !boolean1))
    {
      //do it
    }

but I often get confused looks from other experienced Java developers (not just the newbies), and sometimes comments about how it should only be used for bitwise operations. 

I&#39;m curious as to the best practices regarding the usage of the `^` operator.




Is it good practice to use the xor operator for boolean checks?

I have a DataFrame `df`:

        A    B

I want to create a new column based on the following criteria:

if row `A == B: 0`

if row`A &gt; B: 1`

if row `A &lt; B: -1` 

so given the above table, it should be:

        A    B    C
    a   2    2    0

    c   1    3   -1 

For typical `if else` cases I do `np.where(df.A &gt; df.B, 1, -1)`, does pandas provide a special syntax for solving my problem with one step (without the necessity of creating 3 new columns and then combining the result)?

I have a large numpy array that I need to manipulate so that each element is changed to either a 1 or 0 if a condition is met (will be used as a pixel mask later). There are about 8 million elements in the array and my current method takes too long for the reduction pipeline:

VBA - how to conditionally skip a for loop iteration

I doubt if there is a way to make compile-time conditions in Java like #ifdef #ifndef in C++.
  
My problem is that have an algorithm written in Java, and I have different running time improves to that algorithm. So I want to measure how much time I save when each improve is used.

Right now I have a set of boolean variables that are used to decide during the running time which improve should be used and which not. But even testing those variables influences the total running time.  

So I want to find out a way to decide during the compilation time which parts of the program should be compiled and used.  

Does someone knows a way to do it in Java. Or maybe someone knows that there is no such way (it also would be useful).

I need to set the value of one column based on the value of another in a Pandas dataframe. This is the logic:

    if df[&#39;c1&#39;] == &#39;Value&#39;:
        df[&#39;c2&#39;] = 10
    else:
        df[&#39;c2&#39;] = df[&#39;c3&#39;]

I am unable to get this to do what I want, which is to simply create a column with new values (or change the value of an existing column: either one works for me). 

If I try to run the code above or if I write it as a function and use the apply method, I get the following:

    ValueError: The truth value of a Series is ambiguous. Use a.empty, a.bool(), a.item(), a.any() or a.all().

Is there a way to begin a block of code with a with statement, but conditionally?

Something like:

    if needs_with():
        with get_stuff() as gs:
        
    # do nearly the same large block of stuff,
    # involving gs or not, depending on needs_with()

To clarify, one scenario would have a block encased in the with statement, while another possibility would be the same block, but not encased (i.e., as if it wasn&#39;t indented)

How does PHP know that the function failed so that it runs the die part? I guess I&#39;m asking how the &quot;or&quot; part of it works. I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve seen it before.

I am having a difficult time forming a conditional INSERT

I have x_table with columns (instance, user, item) where instance ID is unique. I want to insert a new row only if the user already does not have a given item. 

For example trying to insert instance=919191 user=123 item=456

    Insert into x_table (instance, user, item) values (919191, 123, 456) 
        ONLY IF there are no rows where user=123 and item=456 


Any help or guidance in the right direction would be much appreciated. 


MySQL Conditional Insert

I have some things for development - e.g mocks which I would like to not bloat my distributed build file with.

In RequireJS you can pass a config in a plugin file and conditonally require things in based on that.

For webpack there doesn&#39;t seem to be a way of doing this. Firstly to create a runtime config for an environment I have used [resolve.alias][1] to repoint a require depending on the environment, e.g:

    // All settings.
    var all = {
    	fish: &#39;salmon&#39;
    };
    
    // `envsettings` is an alias resolved at build time.
    module.exports = Object.assign(all, require(&#39;envsettings&#39;));

Then when creating the webpack config I can dynamically assign which file `envsettings` points to (i.e. `webpackConfig.resolve.alias.envsettings = &#39;./&#39; + env`).

However I would like to do something like:

    if (settings.mock) {
    	// Short-circuit ajax calls.
    	// Require in all the mock modules.
    }

But obviously I don&#39;t want to build in those mock files if the environment isn&#39;t mock.

I could possibly manually repoint all those requires to a stub file using resolve.alias again - but is there a way that feels less hacky?

Conditional build based on environment using Webpack

In PHP we can check if a key exists in an array by using the function `array_key_exists()`.

In the Twig templating language we can check if an variable or an object&#39;s property exists simply by using an `if` statement, like this:

    {% if app.user %}
    do something here
    {% else %}
    do something else
    {% endif %}

But how do we check if a key of an *array* exists using Twig? I tried `{% if array.key %}`, but it gives me an error:

    Key &quot;key&quot; for array with keys &quot;0, 1, 2, 3...648&quot; does not exist

As one of the primary ways of passing data into a template is using arrays, it seems like there should be some way of doing this. Any thoughts?

Let&#39;s say I try to access a hash like this:

    my_hash[&#39;key1&#39;][&#39;key2&#39;][&#39;key3&#39;]

This is nice if key1, key2 and key3 exist in the hash(es), but what if, for example key1 doesn&#39;t exist?

Then I would get `NoMethodError: undefined method [] for nil:NilClass`. And nobody likes that.

So far I deal with this doing a conditional like:

We get into unnecessary coding arguments at my work all-the-time. Today I asked if conditional AND (&amp;&amp;) or OR (||) had higher precedence. One of my coworkers insisted that they had the same precedence, I had doubts, so I looked it up. 

According to MSDN AND (&amp;&amp;) has higher precedence than OR (||). But, can you prove it to a skeptical coworker?

How do I use regular expressions in bash scripts?

Python conditional assignment operator

I&#39;ve had a colleague that told me he once worked for a company that had as a policy to never have conditionals (&quot;if&quot; and &quot;switch&quot; statements) in the code and that they let all the decisions in the code be done using polymorphism and (I&#39;m guessing) some other OO principles.

I *sort of* understand the reasoning behind this, of having code that is more DRY and easier to update, but I&#39;m looking for a more in-depth explanation of this concept. Or maybe it&#39;s part of a more general design approach.

If anyone has any resources for this or would be willing to explain or even have some more terms related to this I can use to find more answers I&#39;d be much obliged.

I found [one question on SO][1] that was kind of related but I&#39;m unfamiliar with C++ so I don&#39;t understand too much of the answers there.

Update 2015: after some more years of experience in programming I see now that the aim of this policy was probably to prevent programmers from adding functionality in a haphazard way by just adding conditionals (if statements) in certain places. A better way to extend software is to use the [&quot;Open/Closed principle&quot;][2] where software is extended by using inheritance and polymorphism. I strongly doubt whether the policy was super strict on all conditionals as it&#39;s kinda hard to go completely without them.

Is it possible to decorator a function conditionally.  For example, I want to decorate the function `foo()` with a timer function (`timeit`) only doing_performance_analysis is `True` (see the psuedo-code below).

    if doing_performance_analysis:
      @timeit
      def foo():
        &quot;&quot;&quot;
        do something, timeit function will return the time it takes
        &quot;&quot;&quot;
        time.sleep(2)
    else:
      def foo():
        time.sleep(2)
