I have problem in changing a string into uppercase with Python. In my research, I got `string.ascii_uppercase` but it doesn&#39;t work.

The following code:

Gives this error message:

    Traceback (most recent call last):

Is there a function built into Java that capitalizes the first character of each word in a String, and does not affect the others?

Examples:

 - `jon skeet` -&gt; `Jon Skeet`
 - `miles o&#39;Brien` -&gt; `Miles O&#39;Brien` (B remains capital, this rules out Title Case)
 - `old mcdonald` -&gt; `Old Mcdonald`*

*(`Old McDonald` would be find too, but I don&#39;t expect it to be THAT smart.)

A quick look at the [Java String Documentation][1] reveals only `toUpperCase()` and `toLowerCase()`, which of course do not provide the desired behavior. Naturally, Google results are dominated by those two functions. It seems like a wheel that must have been invented already, so it couldn&#39;t hurt to ask so I can use it in the future.

I have been searching to find a way to convert a string value from upper case to lower case. All the search results show approaches of using `tr` command.

The problem with the `tr` command is that I am able to get the result only when I use the command with echo statement. For example:

    y=&quot;HELLO&quot;

The above works and results in &#39;hello&#39;, but I need to assign the result to a variable as below:

When assigning the value like above it gives me an empty result.

I&#39;d like to capitalize the first letter of a `&amp;str`. It&#39;s a simple problem and I hope for a simple solution. Intuition tells me to do something like this:

    let mut s = &quot;foobar&quot;;
    s[0] = s[0].to_uppercase();

But `&amp;str`s can&#39;t be indexed like this. The only way I&#39;ve been able to do it seems overly convoluted. I convert the `&amp;str` to an iterator, convert the iterator to a vector, upper case the first item in the vector, which creates an iterator, which I index into, creating an `Option`, which I unwrap to give me the upper-cased first letter. Then I convert the vector into an iterator, which I convert into a `String`, which I convert to a `&amp;str`.

    let s1 = &quot;foobar&quot;;
    let mut v: Vec&lt;char&gt; = s1.chars().collect();
    v[0] = v[0].to_uppercase().nth(0).unwrap();
    let s2: String = v.into_iter().collect();

Is there an easier way than this, and if so, what? If not, why is Rust designed this way?

When doing case-insensitive comparisons, is it more efficient to convert the string to upper case or lower case?  Does it even matter?

It is suggested [in this SO post][1] that C# is more efficient with ToUpper because &quot;Microsoft optimized it that way.&quot;  But I&#39;ve also read [this argument][2] that converting ToLower vs. ToUpper depends on what your strings contain more of, and that typically strings contain more lower case characters which makes ToLower more efficient.

- Is it faster to do a case-insensitive comparison between upper or lower case strings, and why?

I&#39;ve tried using the uppercase filter but it does not work. I&#39;ve tried doing it two ways:

The implementations of the major browsers seem to have problems with `text-transform: uppercase` with Turkish characters. As far as I know (I&#39;m not Turkish.) there are four different `i` characters: `ı i I İ` where the last two are the uppercase representations of the former two.

However applying `text-transform:uppercase` to `ı i`, the browsers (checked IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) results in `I I` which is not correct and may change the meaning of the words so much so that they become insults. (That&#39;s what I&#39;ve been told)

As my research for solutions did not reveal any my question is: Are there workarounds for this issue? The first workaround might be to remove `text-transform: uppercase` entirely but that&#39;s some sort of last resort.
