If you want to *only update on rows that are not currently uppercase* (instead of all rows), you&#39;d need to identify the difference using [`COLLATE`][2] like this:

    UPDATE MyTable
    SET    MyColumn = UPPER(MyColumn)
    WHERE  MyColumn != UPPER(MyColumn) COLLATE Latin1_General_CS_AS

Cases sensitivity is based on your collation settings, and is typically case insensitive by default.

In Python, I&#39;m getting the following error:

    UnboundLocalError: local variable &#39;total&#39; referenced before assignment

At the start of the file (before the function where the error comes from), I declare `total` using the `global` keyword. Then, in the body of the program, before the function that uses `total` is called, I assign it to 0. I&#39;ve tried setting it to 0 in various places (including the top of the file, just after it is declared), but I can&#39;t get it to work. 

Does anyone see what I&#39;m doing wrong?

I&#39;m confused how to import a SQL dump file.  I can&#39;t seem to import the database without creating the database first in MySQL.

This is the error displayed when `database_name` has not yet been created: 

`username` = username of someone with access to the database on the original server.  
`database_name` = name of database from the original server

If I log into MySQL as root and create the database, `database_name`

    create user username;# same username as the user from the database I got the dump from.  
    grant all privileges on database_name.* to username@&quot;localhost&quot; identified by &#39;password&#39;;  
    exit mysql

then attempt to import the sql dump again:  

    $ mysql -u username -p database_name &lt; dumpfile.sql  
    Enter password:  
    ERROR 1007 (HY000) at line 21: Can&#39;t create database &#39;database_name&#39;; database exists

In PHP, I know that `mysql_real_escape` is much safer than using `addslashes`.
However, I could not find an example of a situation where `addslashes` would let an SQL Injection happen.

I know there are [various ways of doing this][1] in SQL Server 2000 / 2005 / 2008.

I am particularly interested in this sort of method that uses the aggregating-set-statement trick:

    INSERT INTO @AnotherTbl(id, somedate, somevalue, runningtotal) 
       SELECT id, somedate, somevalue, null
       FROM TestTable
       ORDER BY somedate

    DECLARE @RunningTotal int
    SET @RunningTotal = 0
 
    UPDATE @AnotherTbl
    SET @RunningTotal = runningtotal = @RunningTotal + somevalue
    FROM @AnotherTbl

... this is very efficient but I have heard there are issues around this because you can&#39;t necessarily guarantee that the `UPDATE` statement will process the rows in the correct order. Maybe we can get some definitive answers about that issue.

But maybe there are other ways that people can suggest?

Is there a function built into Java that capitalizes the first character of each word in a String, and does not affect the others?

Examples:

 - `jon skeet` -&gt; `Jon Skeet`
 - `miles o&#39;Brien` -&gt; `Miles O&#39;Brien` (B remains capital, this rules out Title Case)
 - `old mcdonald` -&gt; `Old Mcdonald`*

*(`Old McDonald` would be find too, but I don&#39;t expect it to be THAT smart.)

A quick look at the [Java String Documentation][1] reveals only `toUpperCase()` and `toLowerCase()`, which of course do not provide the desired behavior. Naturally, Google results are dominated by those two functions. It seems like a wheel that must have been invented already, so it couldn&#39;t hurt to ask so I can use it in the future.

The implementations of the major browsers seem to have problems with `text-transform: uppercase` with Turkish characters. As far as I know (I&#39;m not Turkish.) there are four different `i` characters: `ı i I İ` where the last two are the uppercase representations of the former two.

However applying `text-transform:uppercase` to `ı i`, the browsers (checked IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) results in `I I` which is not correct and may change the meaning of the words so much so that they become insults. (That&#39;s what I&#39;ve been told)

As my research for solutions did not reveal any my question is: Are there workarounds for this issue? The first workaround might be to remove `text-transform: uppercase` entirely but that&#39;s some sort of last resort.

CSS: text-transform not working properly for Turkish characters

I was wondering how to capitalize a string found in an object in an `NSMutableArray`.

An `NSArray` contains the string `&#39;April&#39;` at index 2.  
I want this to be changed to `&#39;APRIL&#39;`.

Is there something simple like this?

    viewNoteDateMonth.text	= [[displayDate objectAtIndex:2] capitalized];
