I want to use JavaScript (can be with jQuery) to do some client-side validation to check whether a string matches the regex:

    ^([a-z0-9]{5,})$

Ideally it would be an expression that returned true or false. 

I&#39;m a JavaScript newbie, does `match()` do what I need? It seems to check whether part of a string matches a regex, not the whole thing.

What is the difference between re.search and re.match?

In R, I have an element `x` and a vector `v`. I want to find the first index of an element in `v` that is equal to `x`. I know that one way to do this is: `which(x == v)[[1]]`, but that seems excessively inefficient. Is there a more direct way to do it?

For bonus points, is there a function that works if `x` is a vector? That is, it should return a vector of indices indicating the position of each element of `x` in `v`.

I initially tried matching like this, but I figured out Rust cannot implicitly cast from `std::string::String` to `&amp;str`.

I want to select rows from a data frame based on partial match of a string in a column, e.g. column &#39;x&#39; contains the string &quot;hsa&quot;. Using `sqldf` - _if_ it had a `like` syntax - I would do something like:

Unfortunately, `sqldf` does not support that syntax.

Or similarly:

What I would like to be able to do is the following:

This gives off the following error: 

    fMatch: (s: String)Unit
    &lt;console&gt;:12: error: unreachable code
                   case _ =&gt; println(&quot;It was something else&quot;)

I guess this is because it thinks that target is actually a name you&#39;d like to assign to whatever the input is. Two questions:

1. Why this behaviour? Can&#39;t case just look for existing variables in scope that have appropriate type and use those first and, if none are found, then treat target as a name to patternmatch over?

2. Is there a workaround for this? Any way to pattern match against variables? Ultimately one could use a big if statement, but match case is more elegant.

JavaScript - Use variable in string match

I&#39;m new to Regex and I&#39;m trying to work it into one of my new projects to see if I can learn it and add it to my repitoire of skills. However, I&#39;m hitting a roadblock here.

I&#39;m trying to see if the user&#39;s input has illegal characters in it by using the `.search` function as so:


    if (name.search(&quot;[\[\]\?\*\+\|\{\}\\\@\.\n\r]&quot;) != -1) {
        ...
    }

However, when I try to execute the function this line is contained it, it throws the following error for that specific line:

    Uncaught SyntaxError: Invalid regular expression: /[[]?*+|{}\()@.
    
    ]/: Nothing to repeat

I can&#39;t for the life of me see what&#39;s wrong with my code. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

When searching for number of occurrences of a string in a file, I generally use:

    grep pattern file | wc -l

However, this only finds one occurrence per line, because of the way grep works. How can I search for the number of times a string appears in a file, regardless of whether they are on the same or different lines?

Also, what if I&#39;m searching for a regex pattern, not a simple string? How can I count those, or, even better, print each match on a new line?

ie I am using a regex with options i. But I am having trouble restricting the regex to just that word, it performs more like a &#39;Like&#39; in SQL

A method to count occurrences in a list

I want to put a button next to a EditText and I want their heights to match. 

For example, from the built in Android browser:

The Go button is the same height as the EditText field.  I know I could wrap both these views in a parent layout view, and set both of their heights to fill_parent, and that would make them match.  However, I would like to do this without having to give the layout a static size.  I would rather have the EditText take whatever height it needs based on the font size and then have the button next to it match whatever height that might be.

Is this possible with an xml layout?

but it just evaluated each array in scalar context, and so compared the length of each array.

I can roll my own function to do it, but it seems like such a low-level operation that there should be a built-in way to do it.  Is there?

The commonality between things I want to match here is an assignment string pattern, so something like:

    my @array = $string =~ m/(\w+=[\w\&quot;\,\s]+)*/;

Where the * indicates one or more occurrences matching the group.

(I discounted using a split() as some matches contain spaces within themselves (i.e. var3...) and would therefore not give desired results.)

With the above regex, I only get:

    0: var1=100 var2

Is it possible in a regex? Or addition code required?

Regex Group in Perl: how to capture elements into array from regex group that matches unknown number of/multiple/variable occurrences from a string?

I&#39;m reading a full html into variable. From the variable, want to grab out all numbers with the pattern of exactly 5 digits. No need to care of whether before/after this digit having other type of words. Just want to make sure whatever that is 5 digit numbers been grabbed out.

However, when I apply it, it not only pull out number with exactly 5 digit, number with more than 5 digits also retrieved...

I had tried putting `^` in front and `$` behind, but it making result come out as null.
