Now I want to change the text color and text size of spinner data. I have used following XML lines to my spinner tag on my XML file, but it is not working.

I am working on an android project and I am using a spinner which uses an array adapter which is populated from the database. 

I can&#39;t find out how I can set the selected item programmatically from the list. For example if, in the spinner I have the following items:

 - Category 1
 - Category 2

How would I programmatically make Category 2 the selected item when the screen is created. I was thinking it might be similar to c# I.E Spinner.SelectedText = &quot;Category 2&quot; but there doesn&#39;t seem to be any method similar to this for Android.

My `onItemSelected` fires off immediately without any interaction with the user, and this is undesired behavior.  I wish for the UI to wait until the user selects something before it does anything.

I even tried setting up the listener in the `onResume()`, hoping that would help, but it doesn&#39;t.

How can I stop this from firing off before the user can touch the control?

On Firefox 28, I&#39;m using `&lt;input type=&quot;number&quot;&gt;` works great because it brings up the numerical keyboard on input fields which should only contain numbers.

In Firefox 29, using number inputs displays spin buttons at the right side of the field, which looks like crap in my design. I really don&#39;t need the buttons, because they are useless when you need to write something like a 6~10 digit number anyway.

I&#39;m all new to Android and I&#39;m trying to create a spinner programmatically and feeding it with data from an array, but Eclipse gives me a warning that I can&#39;t handle.

Here&#39;s what I got:

It&#39;s just a warning and the App seems to run alright, but I&#39;d still like to understand what&#39;s wrong and fix it. Any hint is appreciated.

Android: Create spinner programmatically from array

In the user interface there has to be a spinner which contains some names (the names are visible) and each name has its own ID (the IDs are not equal to display sequence). When the user selects the name from the list the variable currentID has to be changed.

The application contains the ArrayList&lt;User&gt;

Where User is an object with ID and name:

    public class User{
            public int ID;
            public String name;
        }

What I don&#39;t know is how to create a spinner which displays the list of user&#39;s names and bind spinner items to IDs so when the spinner item is selected/changed the variable currentID is set to appropriate value.

I would appreciate if anyone could show the solution of the described problem or provide any link useful to solve the problem.

How to add items to a spinner in Android?

I am looking for a way to hide one item in an Android spinner widget. This would allow you to simulate a spinner with no items selected, and ensures that the onItemSelected() callback is always called for every item selected (if the hidden item is the &quot;current&quot; one). Normally there is always one item in the spinner that doesn&#39;t generate a callback, namely the current one. 

There is some code on stackoverflow for how to disable (gray out) items, but not how to hide items completely as if they don&#39;t exist.

After much experimentation I&#39;ve come up with a somewhat hack-ish solution that works on various old and new Android platforms. It has some minor cosmetic drawbacks which are hard to notice. I&#39;d still like to hear of a more official solution, other than &quot;don&#39;t do that with a spinner&quot;. 

This always hides the first item in the spinner, but could fairly easily be extended to hide an arbitrary item or more than one item. Add a dummy item containing an empty string at the start of your list of spinner items. You may want to set the current spinner selection to item 0 before the spinner dialog opens, this will simulate an unselected spinner.

Spinner setup example with ArrayAdapter method override:

It may be necessary to add

    import android.view.ViewGroup;

To your list of imports at the top of your file. For some reason Eclipse doesn&#39;t make this suggestion when it doesn&#39;t recognize the ViewGroup class involved in the code.

How to set font custom font to Spinner text programmatically?

I&#39;m trying to change the text color of the single item that is displayed in the spinner button after you select an item from the dropdown. I&#39;ve been perusing the themes.xml and styles.xml in the Android SDK for an hour now, and I can&#39;t seem to find where the Spinner is getting the color value from.

To clarify, I&#39;m NOT trying to change the color of a dropdown item, I&#39;m trying to change the color of the spinner&#39;s displayed text when there is no dropdown. I guess you could call it the spinner&#39;s &#39;button&#39; text.

I want to bring up a spinner dialog when the user taps a menu item to allow the user to select an item.

Do I need a separate dialog for this or can I use Spinner directly? I see [this link,][1] mentions a MODE_DIALOG option but it doesn&#39;t seem to be defined anymore. AlertDialog may be OK but all the options say &quot;clicking on an item in the list will not dismiss the dialog&quot; which is what I want. Any suggestion?

I&#39;m having problems when using `android:enabled=&quot;false&quot;`, it&#39;s not **disabling** the **component** in the case it&#39;s a `spinner`. Don&#39;t know if it&#39;s relevant, but it belongs to a layout that&#39;s part of a `viewflipper`.

Disabling Spinner in android

If the text of a `Spinner` item is too long to fit into a single line, the text is not wrapped but cut off. This is *only* the case for **API level &gt;= 11**. Here are screenshots of Android **4.2.2** (left) which shows the wrong behavior and Android **2.3.3** (right) where it looks as expected.

There were some answers suggesting relatively simple solutions.

 - Writing a custom `Adapter` and overriding `getView()` as well as `getDropDownView()`. This is not the solution here, because at this point, there is still the original problem: How does the layout have to look like to handle proper line wrapping?

 - Wrapping the `TextView` of the drop down view into a parent `ViewGroup`. Does not work with `android:layout_width=&quot;match_parent&quot;` because the width of the parent strangely seems to be unlimited.

 - Giving the drop down view a fixed width. This is not suitable with the different widths the `Spinner` can have.

 - And of course, no solution is to manually insert `\n`s anywhere into the text.

Spinner does not wrap text -- is this an Android bug?

How to add a Hint in spinner in XML

I have an Android Spinner view in my layout. I would like that spinner to show only a single text item when closed, but when the user clicks on it (i.e. opens the spinner dialog) I would like to show more extensive information for each item, including an icon and an additional description text view. As it is now the spinner shows the very same layout (icon, title + description) in both states.

If I attach an ArrayAdapter to the spinner, then I get access to something called &quot;setDropDownViewResource&quot; but that&#39;s not necessarily what I need, since my spinner data is fetched from a Cursor not from an Array of any kind (I have, as of now, created my own adapter, extending BaseAdapter).

I have 1-50 records in the database. I am fetching those data using cursor and set those values to Spinner using Simple Cursor Adapter. Now what i need is i want to set one value say 39th value as default. But not by its position i want to set by its value.

Is there anyway of making a hint for a spinner similar to hint that is provided for edit text fields. I know you can use a prompt that gives you a title bar but still leaves the initial spinner field blank until you click into the spinner. I currently have a crude way of setting a dummy field as the first part of the spinner array which is the question and then have a check at the end to make sure the spinner doesn&#39;t equal the question string. Is there any cleaner / better way of doing this?

Android Kotlin onItemSelectedListener for spinner not working

I&#39;m having some problem with setSelection on a Spinner. I set the value to be pre-selected when the spinner is shown in code, but it has no effect and the first alternative in the list is always selected. The code looks like this:

Android: setSelection having no effect on Spinner

I have a `OnItemSelectedListener` for my `Spinner`, but it is not called when the selected item is the same as the previous one. Apparently the `OnClickListener` is not an option for a `Spinner`.
I need to catch everytime a user click on an item. Any idea?

Maybe the fact that this `Spinner` is inside the `ActionBar` disturbs normal behavior?

Spinner : onItemSelected not called when selected item remains the same

I am trying to get the selected items string out of a `Spinner`. So far I have gotten this:

    bundle.putString(ListDbAdapter.DB_PRI, v.getText().toString());

This does not work and gives a class casting exception (I thought I could cast a `View` to a widget that inherits it. Obviously not!) So how do you get the selected value of a `Spinner`?

Overriding css doesn&#39;t work. I tried changing color in material files but they can only be imported, I can&#39;t change anything there.

Creating a setError() for the Spinner

I&#39;m just wondering if it&#39;s at all possible to simply remove the dropdown arrow for a spinner? I have a drawable arrow in a backgroud layout for my spinner, however the system default arrow appears to the right of the spinner, which I would like to get rid of.

I&#39;m a new Android programmer and having trouble with using Spinner, i&#39;ve tried multiple tutorials and still am confused.  I&#39;d like to know what my next step is here, as far as I know I have set up my spinner in XML, in Java I have identified that spinner, created an ArrayAdapter for said spinner, and specified some options.  I&#39;m not to sure if I have populated the spinner yet or how to manuever with the spinner object.  I&#39;d like to be able to use the spinner object to select one of three options and then keep that value inside of the textview inside of the spinner.  

How can I use onItemSelected in Android?

I have the following code with no compilation errors, just resulting in an infinite loop... I don&#39;t get where the problem is. 

When I click the Button, I want to create an object using the values entered in the edittexts and pass them to another activity. But instead, I get a loop.

Each spinner is populated using a string-array from resources/strings. I had some difficulties getting the values here, because at the spinner `spTipUtilizator` when &quot;Profesor&quot; is selected, I want `spGrupa` to be disabled, and when &quot;Student&quot; is selected, I want `spdept` to be disabled, but also this doesn&#39;t work. And based on that option will be chosen the next activity which will be opened after clicking the button. 

Also, why doesn&#39;t it work to set the default date in my calendar? I tried multiple things found here, but none of them worked for me. My Android Studio doesn&#39;t show `DatePicker`, which I would prefer, only that Calendar.
