I want to show the value in the TextView only after selecting an item from the drop down list. How do I do this?

It may be necessary to add

After using the Android Design Support Library&#39;s [`TextInputLayout`](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/support/design/widget/TextInputLayout.html) to place a floating label above an [`EditText`](http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/EditText.html) component, I was wondering if there is a way to add a floating label to the [`Spinner`](http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/controls/spinner.html) component (not necessarily using the Design Library).

By this, I mean something like a [`TextView`](http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/TextView.html) placed above the `Spinner` (obviously no animations like the `TextInputLayout`), but I want the **text size, font and colour to match that of the `TextInputLayout`&#39;s floating label**.

For example, it would look something like this (see the labels above the `Spinner`s):

As I mentioned before, my main aim is to have a label above the `Spinner`, just as in the `TextInputLayout` - so text size, font, colour, and distances between the label and the component would be the same.

From the [Google Design guidelines for text fields](https://www.google.co.uk/design/spec/components/text-fields.html#text-fields-floating-labels), it has the following for floating labels:

&gt;Hint and input font: Roboto Regular 16sp  
&gt;Label font: Roboto Regular 12sp  
&gt;Tile height: 72dp  
&gt;Text top and bottom padding: 16dp  
&gt;Text field divider padding: 8dp  

as well as the images shown above. 

So the floating label font is: _**Roboto Regular 12sp**_. You can therefore use a `TextView` to display the `Spinner` label as I do not know of any custom `View`s or special components you could use.

**However**, after trying it out, it does not look quite as good as the example shown in the image. A **custom view may be better for this**, as it could look nicer, but the solution above is just one way of achieving something close to what I originally wanted.

Android : Fill Spinner From Java Code Programmatically

I&#39;ve thought of some less than elegant ways to solve this, but I know I must be missing something.

My `onItemSelected` fires off immediately without any interaction with the user, and this is undesired behavior.  I wish for the UI to wait until the user selects something before it does anything.

I even tried setting up the listener in the `onResume()`, hoping that would help, but it doesn&#39;t.

I would like to add one item next to the overflow button, but I want that item to be a dropdown list, and the user will be able to select an option there, but not related to navigation. I&#39;m trying to get a Spinner to load up with no selected value. Once the user selects a value it then takes them to another page. 

This is proving to be a problem because at present, the page just loads straight away before the user gets a choice to choose.

My spinner class is set up the same way as Google&#39;s: http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-spinner.html

So basically, is it possible have a spinner that loads with nothing selected because at present, it loads the first item in my string array.

If the text of a `Spinner` item is too long to fit into a single line, the text is not wrapped but cut off. This is *only* the case for **API level &gt;= 11**. Here are screenshots of Android **4.2.2** (left) which shows the wrong behavior and Android **2.3.3** (right) where it looks as expected.

There were some answers suggesting relatively simple solutions.

 - Writing a custom `Adapter` and overriding `getView()` as well as `getDropDownView()`. This is not the solution here, because at this point, there is still the original problem: How does the layout have to look like to handle proper line wrapping?

 - Wrapping the `TextView` of the drop down view into a parent `ViewGroup`. Does not work with `android:layout_width=&quot;match_parent&quot;` because the width of the parent strangely seems to be unlimited.

 - Giving the drop down view a fixed width. This is not suitable with the different widths the `Spinner` can have.

 - And of course, no solution is to manually insert `\n`s anywhere into the text.

Spinner does not wrap text -- is this an Android bug?

I&#39;ve read several thing about it but I can&#39;t find what I need.
I want to keep the grey arrow but I want to remove the horizontal bar from the default style and have a white background. Do you have any idea of how I can do this ?

Change spinner background color but keep arrow

When you implement SpinnerAdapter you get [getDropDownView][1], how does it differ from `getView` which you have when you need to extend `BaseAdapter`.

I am trying to add a Hint in the spinner widget as there is no option of Hint as in `EditText`, I want to show Gender as a Hint and when clicked it must show only Male and Female not the hint.

The solutions I found to change the spinner dropdown icon where all:

**1. create a custom drawable**

simply werent working. They had stretched icons or the bottom line was missing or something else went totally wrong. I just want another arrow.

How do I create spinner which allows to choose multiple items, i.e spinner with check boxes?

I have an Android Spinner view in my layout. I would like that spinner to show only a single text item when closed, but when the user clicks on it (i.e. opens the spinner dialog) I would like to show more extensive information for each item, including an icon and an additional description text view. As it is now the spinner shows the very same layout (icon, title + description) in both states.

If I attach an ArrayAdapter to the spinner, then I get access to something called &quot;setDropDownViewResource&quot; but that&#39;s not necessarily what I need, since my spinner data is fetched from a Cursor not from an Array of any kind (I have, as of now, created my own adapter, extending BaseAdapter).

Anyone who can help me?

Android Spinner with different layouts for &quot;drop down state&quot; and &quot;closed state&quot;?

I have 1-50 records in the database. I am fetching those data using cursor and set those values to Spinner using Simple Cursor Adapter. Now what i need is i want to set one value say 39th value as default. But not by its position i want to set by its value.

I know how to set the spinner default by its position

       spinner.setSelection(39) 
will set the spinner to that value.


But i didn&#39;t have any idea about setting the spinner default by its value(text) in the database.
I know the values in the database. For eg &quot;books&quot; is one of the value in the spinner. I need to set the spinner default as books.

Is there any possible way to do this?

Is it possible to know whether a `Spinner` is open or closed? It would even be better if there was some sort of onOpenListener for Spinners.

I&#39;ve tried using an OnItemSelectedListener like this:

    spinnerType.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {

			@Override
			public void onItemSelected(AdapterView&lt;?&gt; parent, View view, int position, long id) {
				executeSomething();
				
			}

			@Override

I can know that the window will close if something is selected (in executeSomething()). But I don&#39;t get notified if I click outside of the Dialog, which also closes the spinner
