I want to mark up a phone number as callable link in an HTML document. I have read [the microformats approach](http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard-faq#How_do_you_mark_up_a_phone_extension), and I know, that the `tel:` scheme would be standard, but is quite literally nowhere implemented.

Skype defines, as far as I know, `skype:` and `callto:`, the latter having gained some popularity. I assume, that other companies have either other schemes or jump on the `callto:` train.

What would be a best practice to mark-up a phone number, so that as many people as possible with VoIP software can just click on a link to get a call?

Bonus question: Does anyone know about complications with emergency numbers such as 911 in US or 110 in Germany?

**Update:** Microsoft NetMeeting takes `callto:` schemes under WinXP. [This question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1009181/url-scheme-for-phone-call) suggests, that Microsoft Office Communicator will handle `tel:` schemes but not `callto:` ones. Great, Redmond!

**Update 2:** Two and a half years later now. It seems to boil down to what you want to do with the number. In mobile context, `tel:` is the way to go. Targeting desktops it&#39;s up to you, if you think your users are more Skype people (`callto:`) or will more likely have something like Google Voice (`tel:`) installed. My personal opinion is, when in doubt use `tel:` (in line with @Sidnicious&#39; answer).

**Update 3:** User @rybo111 noted, that Skype in Chrome has meanwhile jumped on the `tel:` bandwagon. I cannot verify this, because no machine with both at hand, but if it&#39;s true, it means we have finally a winner here: `tel:`

How to mark-up phone numbers?

I&#39;m using markdown to edit this question right now. In some [wikis][1] I used wiki markup. Are they the same thing? Are they related? Please explain. If I want to implement one or the other in a web project (like stackoverflow) what do I need to use?

Markdown vs markup - are they related?

I have a page made up of various &quot;sections&quot; like videos, a newsfeed etc.. I am a bit confused how to represent these with HTML5. Currently I have them as HTML5 `&lt;section&gt;`s, but on further inspection it looks they the more correct tag would be `&lt;article&gt;`. Could anyone shed some light on this for me? 

None of these things are blog posts or &quot;documents&quot; in the true sense of the word so it&#39;s kind of hard to see which element to apply.

EDIT: I have opted to use the `article` tag since it seems to be a container tag for unrelated elements which I guess my &quot;sections&quot; are. The actual tagname article however seems to be rather misleading and although they are saying HTML5 has been developed with greater consideration for web *applications*, I find a lot of the tags to be more blog-centric / document based.

Anyway thanks for your answers it appears to be fairly subjective.

Section vs Article HTML5

Is there a way to comment out markup in an `.ASPX` page so that it isn&#39;t delivered to the client? I have tried the standard comments `&lt;!-- --&gt;` but this just gets delivered as a comment and doesn&#39;t prevent the control from rendering.

A topic of debate that&#39;s seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5.  There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash.

*I do not develop software that runs in a browser,* so my (limited) understanding is:

 - HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser.  The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification.
 - Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics.  It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that&#39;s available as a plug-in to most common browsers.

Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible *from a technical/coding point-of-view* that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)?

I am giving link of a pdf file on my web page for download, like below

  - If the user have installed Adobe Acrobat, then it opens the file in the same browser window in Adobe Reader.
  - If the Adobe Acrobat is not installed then it pop-up to the user for Downloading the file.

The best I can come up with, and I&#39;m wondering if there&#39;s a way to do it with less markup:

How do you indent a bulleted list in a README file using GitHub flavored markdown?

I need to create a html table (or something similar looking) with a fixed header and a fixed first column. 

Every solution I&#39;ve seen so far uses Javascript or `jQuery` to set scrollTop/scrollLeft, but it doesn&#39;t work smoothly on mobile browsers, so I&#39;m looking for a pure CSS solution.

I found a solution for a fixed column here: [jsfiddle.net/C8Dtf/20/][1] but I don&#39;t know how I can enhance it to make the header fixed too.
 
I want it to work on webkit browsers or use some `css3` features, but I repeat, I don&#39;t want to use `Javascript` for scrolling.

I am not too familiar with the lightweight markup language used by github when updating README files.

Where are the resources which I can read up on how to write the appropriate markup syntax for my open source library&#39;s README/wiki files?

I&#39;m trying to write a blog post which includes a code segment inside a `&lt;pre&gt;` tag. The code segment includes a generic type and uses `&lt;&gt;` to define that type. This is what the segment looks like:

The resulting HTML removes the `&lt;&gt;` and ends up like this:

Compare and contrast the lightweight markup languages

I notice Scott Guthrie is starting to [mention Razor][1] a [fair bit][2] on his blog but I&#39;m just not that sure that it&#39;s a good fit for my style.

Granted it&#39;s a fairly unfamiliar style for someone who&#39;s pretty used to a &quot;standard&quot; sort of ASP.Net markup (content place holders and inline code), but it just feels like a lot of additional pages to manage and less clear markup to me.

What are other peoples&#39; feelings on it?  Is it something that you believe should be seriously considered when scaffolding new MVC pages or is it just trying to solve a problem that doesn&#39;t exist?

I fail to see what makes YAML any less of a markup language than XML. The purpose of a markup language is to define the structure of a document, and YAML does exactly that (YAML stands for **YAML ain&#39;t markup language**).

What YAML should instead stand for is, *Yet another markup language*.

In Xcode 8 beta and Swift 3, when you have a method that takes a closure as a parameter, for example:

What is the difference between x:Reference and ElementName?

I&#39;m trying to create a horizontal navigation bar (no dropdown, just a horizontal list), but I&#39;m having trouble finding the best way to add vertical dividers between the menu items.

The actual HTML is as follows:

Between each menu item I want a small image as a vertical divider, except that I don&#39;t want a divider shown before the first item and I don&#39;t want a divider shown after the second item.

Just replacing the pipe with an actual image.

I&#39;ve tried different ways - I&#39;ve tried setting the `list-style-image` property, but the image didn&#39;t show up. I&#39;ve also tried setting the divider as a background which actually more or less worked except that it made the first item have a divider in front of it.
