I hate reST but love Sphinx. Is there a way that Sphinx reads Markdown instead of reStructuredText?

I&#39;m trying to use Sphinx to document a 5,000+ line project in Python. It has about 7 base modules. As far as I know, In order to use autodoc I need to write code like this for each file in my project:

    .. automodule:: mods.set.tests
        :members:
        :show-inheritance:

This is way too tedious because I have many files. It would be much easier if I could just specify that I wanted the &#39;mods&#39; package to be documented. Sphinx could then recursively go through the package and make a page for each submodule.

Is there a feature like this? If not I could write a script to make all the .rst files, but that would take up a lot of time.

I&#39;m trying to get started with Sphinx and seem to have relentless problems.

Command: `docs/sphinx-quickstart`

I answer all the questions and everything works fine.

Command: `docs/ls`

Everything looks normal. Result: `build  Makefile  source` 

Command: `sphinx-build -d build/doctrees source build/html`

It seems to work.  I was able to open the index.html file and see a &quot;shell&quot; of what I&#39;m wanting.

When I try and put my actual source code as the `source` folder I run into problems.

Command: `sphinx-build -d build/doctrees ../ys_utils build/html`

Result:

I am a complete newbie to Sphinx and relatively new to this kind of documentation.  Can anyone offer some suggestions?

I need `nextgen/docs/Makefile` to generate the HTML for `ys_utils` and all other modules I&#39;m going to have.

sphinx-build fail - autodoc can&#39;t import/find module

I&#39;m using [Sphinx][1] and the [autodoc extension][2] to generate API documentation for my Python modules.  Whilst I can see how to nicely document specific parameters, I cannot find an example of how to document a `**kwargs` parameter.

Does anyone have a good example of a clear way to document these?

What is the correct way to document a **kwargs parameter?

Sphinx doesn&#39;t generate docs for \__init__(self) by default. I have tried the following:

    .. automodule:: mymodule
        :members:

and

    ..autoclass:: MyClass
        :members:

In conf.py, setting the following only appends the \__init__(self) docstring to the class docstring ([the Sphinx autodoc documentation][1] seems to agree that this is the expected behavior, but mentions nothing regarding the problem I&#39;m trying to solve):

    autoclass_content = &#39;both&#39;

How to use Sphinx&#39;s autodoc to document a class&#39;s __init__(self) method?

I want to add a link to a method in my class from within the docstring of another method of the same class. I want the link to work in sphinx and preferentially also in Spyder and other Python IDE&#39;s.

I tried several options and found only one that works, but it&#39;s cumbersome.

Suppose the following structure in ``mymodule.py``

    def class MyClass():
        def foo(self):
            print &#39;foo&#39;
        def bar(self):
            &quot;&quot;&quot;This method does the same as &lt;link to foo&gt;&quot;&quot;&quot;
            print &#39;foo&#39;

I tried the following options for ``&lt;link to foo&gt;``:

 - :func:\`foo\`
 - :func:\`self.foo\`
 - :func:\`MyClass.foo\`
 - :func:\`mymodule.MyClass.foo\`

The only one that effectively produces a link is :func:\`mymodule.MyClass.foo\`, but the link is shown as `mymodule.MyClass.foo()` and I want a link that is shown as ``foo()`` or ``foo``.  
None of the options above produces a link in Spyder.

Link to class method in python docstring

I am using Sphinx to document a non-Python project.  I want to distribute `./doc` folders in each submodule, containing `submodule_name.rst` files to document that module.  I then want to suck those files into the master hierarchy to create a spec for the entire design.  

I.e.:

I attempted to include files in the master `project_spec.rst` document toctree like this:

However this error message results:

Is it not possible to use `../` in a document path somehow?

Can sphinx link to documents that are not located in directories below the root document?

How to create a nested list in reStructuredText?

I like Doxygen to create documentation of C or PHP code. I have an upcoming Python project and I think I remember that Python doesn&#39;t have `/* .. */` comments, and also has its own self-documentation facility which seems to be the pythonic way to document.

Format text in a link in reStructuredText

I need to document my Python project using Sphinx. But I can&#39;t use `autodoc`.

When I config my project I select the option &quot;extension autodoc&quot;, but now if I use

I have a module, `errors.py` in which several global constants are defined (note: I understand that Python doesn&#39;t have constants, but I&#39;ve defined them by convention using UPPERCASE).

Using reStructuredText how can I document these constants? As you can see I&#39;ve listed a docstring above them, but I haven&#39;t found any documentation that indicates to do that, I&#39;ve just done it as a guess.

I&#39;m getting the warning:

    WARNING: document isn&#39;t included in any toctree

for files that exist in the document because they&#39;ve been explicitly included.  So I have the index file:

       pages/0010-foo

In the file 0020-bar.rst, I&#39;m specifically including a number of other files, as in:

    .. contents:: :local:

    .. include:: /pages/reference-architecture/technical-considerations/0070-baz.rst

But when I build the project, I still get a warning that 0070-baz.rst isn&#39;t in any toctree, as in:

The weird thing is that I can see the content in the output. Is this normal?  Does this warning always appear for files that are explicitly included rather than included via toctree?

I want to link a file named `install.rst` to my quickstart guide in a paragraph. I don&#39;t know how can I achieve this.

How can I link/reference another reST file in the documentation?

Following the documentation for setting up Sphinx documentation links between packages, I have added 

    intersphinx_mapping = {&#39;python&#39;: (&#39;http://docs.python.org/2&#39;, None),
                           &#39;numpy&#39;: (&#39;http://docs.scipy.org/doc/numpy/&#39;, None),

                           &#39;matplotlib&#39;: (&#39;http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/&#39;, None)}

to my `conf.py`, but can&#39;t seem to get links to any project other than Python itself to work. For example

    :term:`svg graphics &lt;matplotlib:svg&gt;`

just takes me to the index page, without adding the expected `#term-svg` anchor, and I can&#39;t even locate the glossary for `scipy` or figure out how to determine what `:ref:`s or `:term:`s are supported by a package.

Where can I find instructions on how to specify targets for `:ref:`s and `:term:`s in `numpy`, `scipy`, and `matplotlib`?

Specifying targets for intersphinx links to numpy, scipy, and matplotlib

I am using the *Sphinx* `autodoc` feature to generate documentation based on the docstrings of my Python library.

The syntax for cross referencing is found [here][1]


A label must precede the section in order to allow that section to be referenced from other areas of the documentation.

What I have is a .rst (ReStructeredText) file for one of my classes. It uses
    
    .. autoclass:: classname
        :members:

To generate documentation for the class.

My question is, how would I reference the auto-generated methods of the class from another .rst document in the documentation? If I try to place a label within the method&#39;s docstring, Sphinx complains. If I try to place a label before the method heading, Sphinx doesn&#39;t recognize it.

Is there a simple way to do this, or will I have to explicitly write in my class file the method name and precede that with a label?

Multi-line description of a parameter description in python docstring

I&#39;m starting an open source Python project shortly and I&#39;m trying to decide in advance how to write my docstrings. The obvious answer would be using reStructuredText and Sphinx with `autodoc`, because I *really* like the idea of simply properly documenting my code in my docstrings then have Sphinx automatically construct an API doc for me.

The problem is the reStructuredText syntax it uses - I think it&#39;s completely unreadable before it&#39;s rendered. For instance:


	:param path: The path of the file to wrap
	:type path: str
	:param field_storage: The :class:`FileStorage` instance to wrap
	:type field_storage: FileStorage
	:param temporary: Whether or not to delete the file when the File instance
		is destructed
	:type temporary: bool

You have to *really* slow down and take a minute to make any sense out of that syntactic jumble. I like much more the Google way ([Google Python Style Guide][1]), which counterpart to the above looks like this:

&lt;pre&gt;
Args:
    path (str): The path of the file to wrap
    field_storage (FileStorage): The FileStorage instance to wrap
    temporary (bool): Whether or not to delete the file when the File
        instance is destructed
&lt;/pre&gt;

**Way** nicer! But of course, Sphinx will have none of that and renders all the text after `Args:` in one long line.

So to summarize - before I go and defile my code base with this reStructuredText syntax I would like to know if there are any real alternatives to using it and Sphinx, short of just writing my own API doc. For instance, is there an extension for Sphinx that handles Google Style Guide&#39;s docstring style?

Are there any real alternatives to reStructuredText for Python documentation?

I&#39;m making a framework in which I let developers describe their package using reStructuredText. I want to parse that reStructuredText into HTML so I can show it in a GUI.

I&#39;m familiar with the excellent Sphinx, but I&#39;ve never otherwise parsed reStructuredText. I imagined something like a function that takes a string of reStructuredText, and possibly several additional arguments, and returns a string of HTML.

So I looked into Docutils, which is responsible for parsing reStructuredText. I couldn&#39;t understand at all how to find this function. Documentation on the web is spotty. Many of the functions in the `docutils.parsers.rst` module seemed to be geared toward filenames. I don&#39;t have filenames! I&#39;m just handling strings.

I tried creating a `Parser` and a `Document` and using the `parse` method, but I just get an error about a missing `.tab_width` setting.

Does anyone know how to parse reStructuredText into HTML?

How to preserve line breaks when generating python docs using sphinx

I&#39;m trying to auto-generate basic documentation for my codebase using Sphinx. However, I&#39;m having difficulty instructing Sphinx to recursively scan my files.

I have a Python codebase with a folder structure like:

I&#39;ve read the [quickstart tutorial](https://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/master/usage/quickstart.html), and although I&#39;m still trying to understand the docs, the way it&#39;s worded makes me concerned that Sphinx assumes I&#39;m going to manually create documentation files for every single module/class/function in my codebase.

However, I did notice the &quot;automodule&quot; statement, and I enabled autodoc during quickstart, so I&#39;m hoping most of the documentation can be automatically generated. I modified my conf.py to add my src folder to sys.path and then modified my index.rst to use automodule. So now my index.rst looks like:

And this appears to have failed to import anything inside my package. Viewing the generated index.html shows nothing next to &quot;Contents:&quot;. The Index page only shows &quot;mypackage (module)&quot;, but clicking it shows it also has no contents.

How do you direct Sphinx to recursively parse a package and automatically generate documentation for every class/method/function it encounters, without having to manually list every class yourself?

Automatically Generating Documentation for All Python Package Contents

I&#39;m writing some documentation using ReStructuredText (ReST) format for the later web-page generation using Sphinx, and I cannot find a way to write some &quot;bold italic&quot; text. 

There are markers for the so-called &#39;emphasis&#39; (*italic*) and &#39;strong emphasis&#39; (**bold**) text. They are `*italic text*` and `**bold text**` respectively. I also read in some documentation on this format that these formatting markers cannot be simply &quot;nested&quot;. I.e. the `***text***` (or `** *text* **`) does not produce the ***bold italic*** text.
  
Still there probably should be some way to produce a text emphasized both with bold and italic markers, since it is a widespread practice to mark pieces of text that way.

Bold italic in ReStructuredText

I want to build html docs using a virtualenv instead of the native environment on my machine. 

I&#39;ve entered the virtualenv but when I run `make html` I get errors saying the module can&#39;t be imported - I *know* the errors are due to the module being unavailable in my native environment. 
How can I specify which environment should be used when searching for docs (eg the virtualenv)?
