I run `find` and iterate through the results with `[ $ -L $F $  ]` to collect certain symbolic links. 

I am wondering if there is an easy way to determine if the link is broken (points to a non-existent file) in this scenario.

Here is my code:

    FILES=`find /target/ | grep -v &#39;\.disabled$&#39; | sort`

    for F in $FILES; do
        if [ -L $F ]; then
            DO THINGS
        fi
    done

Recent NTFS and Windows implement symlinks:

* [NTFS junction point] can be used as directory symlink since NTFS 3.0 (Windows 2000) using `linkd` or `junction` tools.
* [NTFS symbolic link] can also be used as symlink (for both file and directory) since Windows Vista using `mklink` tool.

But on Cygwin 1.7 (installed on Windows 7), `ln -s` creates a text file.

on Cygwin:

    $ ln -s -v target mylink
    `mylink&#39; -&gt; `target&#39;

on MinGW (or your favorite editor):

    $ cat mylink
    !&lt;symlink&gt;&#255;&#254;t a r g e t 

**Is it possible to tell Cygwing to use [NTFS junction point] or [NTFS symbolic link]?**

Enable native NTFS symbolic links for Cygwin

I downloaded the linux Tor Browser package, which is a self-contained folder. I made a symlink to the run script:

    $ ln -s torbrowser/start-tor-browser ~/bin/torbrowser

However, the link was broken upon creation. All I did was run that command, nothing else, and it was broken. I did ls and got:

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 synful synful 28 Jul 18 21:52 torbrowser -&gt; torbrowser/start-tor-browser

...which is weird because torbrowser/start-tor-browser had 755 permissions. Also, I ran `file`:

    $ file ~/bin/torbrowser
    bin/torbrowser: broken symbolic link to `torbrowser/start-tor-browser&#39;

I made a new bash script and a symlink to it to test this, and had no such problems. I&#39;m not sure why it&#39;s only happening with start-tor-browser. It&#39;s got normal permissions and is just a normal bash script (even according to the file command).

...any ideas?


Symlink broken right after creation

I have a string containing the file system path to an existing symlink. I want to get the path that this link points to.

Basically I want the same that I&#39;d get through this bit of hackery:

    s = &quot;path/to/existing/symlink&quot;

but I want to do it without shelling out.

How do I get the target of a symlink?

Our developers use a mix of Windows and Unix-based OSes. Therefore, symbolic links created on Unix machines become a problem for Windows developers. In Windows ([MSysGit][1]), the symbolic link is converted to a text file with a path to the file it points to. Instead, I&#39;d like to convert the symbolic link into an actual Windows symbolic link.

The (**updated**) solution I have to this is:

 - Write a post-checkout script that will recursively look for &quot;symbolic link&quot; text files.
 - Replace them with a Windows symbolic link (using [mklink][2]) with the same name and extension as dummy &quot;symbolic link&quot;
 - Ignore these Windows symbolic links by adding an entry into file *.git/info/exclude*

I have not implemented this, but I believe this is a solid approach to this problem.

 1. What, if any, downsides do you see to this approach?
 2. Is this post-checkout script even implementable? I.e., can I recursively find out the dummy &quot;symlink&quot; files Git creates?

Git symbolic links in Windows

I need to create a symlink for every item of dir1 (file or directory) inside `dir2`. `dir2` already exists and is not a symlink. In Bash I can easily achieve this by: 

```shell
ln -s /home/guest/dir1/* /home/guest/dir2/
```

But in python using `os.symlink` I get an error:

    &gt;&gt;&gt; os.symlink(&#39;/home/guest/dir1/*&#39;, &#39;/home/guest/dir2/&#39;)
    Traceback (most recent call last):
      File &quot;&lt;stdin&gt;&quot;, line 1, in &lt;module&gt;
    OSError: [Errno 17] File exist

I know I can use `subprocess` and run `ln` command. I don&#39;t want that solution. 

I&#39;m also aware that workarounds using `os.walk` or `glob.glob` are possible, but I want to know if it is possible to do this using `os.symlink`.

I have a symlink to an important directory. I want to get rid of that symlink, while keeping the directory behind it.  

I tried `rm` and get back `rm: cannot remove &#39;foo&#39;`.  
I tried `rmdir` and got back `rmdir: failed to remove &#39;foo&#39;: Directory not empty`  
I then progressed through `rm -f`, `rm -rf` and `sudo rm -rf`

Then I went to find my back-ups.

Is there a way to get rid of the symlink with out throwing away the baby with the bathwater?

Below is my code for creating a symlink of a directory:

    sudo ln -s /usr/local/nginx/conf/ /etc/nginx

I already created the directory `/etc/nginx`.  I just want the contents of the source directory (`/usr/local/nginx/conf/`) to be in the contents of the target directory (`/etc/nginx`). But when I execute the code, `/etc/nginx` contains a directory called `conf`, instead of the contents of `conf`. That directory contains the contents I want, but in the wrong location.

Why did it put a directory in the target folder, instead of just putting the contents of the directory in the target folder?

Create a symbolic link of directory in Ubuntu

Given an absolute or relative path (in a Unix-like system), I would like to determine the full path of the target after resolving any intermediate symlinks. Bonus points for also resolving ~username notation at the same time.

If the target is a directory, it might be possible to chdir() into the directory and then call getcwd(), but I really want to do this from a shell script rather than writing a C helper. Unfortunately, shells have a tendency to try to hide the existence of symlinks from the user (this is bash on OS X):

Recently I was asked this during a job interview. I was honest and said I knew how a symbolic link behaves and how to create one, but do not understand the use of a hard link and how it differs from a symbolic one.

At a high level, the only obvious difference between [NTFS Junction Points][1] and [Symbolic Links][2] is that Junctions are only able to be directories, while SymLinks are allowed to also target files.

When I try to symlink a binary in my /usr/bin folder, I get an Operation not permitted error:

Even as sudo, I get this error.

I want to link ( `ln -s` ) all files that are in `/mnt/usr/lib/` into `/usr/lib/`

Yet another Docker symlink question. I have a bunch of files that I want to copy over to all my Docker builds. My dir structure is:

    parent_dir
        - common_files
            - file.txt
        - dir1
            - Dockerfile  
            - symlink -&gt; ../common_files

In above example,  I want file.txt to be copied over when I docker build inside dir1. But I don&#39;t want to maintain multiple copies of file.txt. 
Per [this link, as of docker version 0.10][1], docker build must

But I get **no such file or directory** when I build with either of these lines in my Dockerfile:

mount option will NOT solve it for me (cross platform...).
I tried `tar -czh . | docker build -t` without success.

Is there a way to make Docker follow the symlink and copy the common_files/file.txt into the built container?



Docker follow symlink outside context

I am using Sphinx to document a non-Python project.  I want to distribute `./doc` folders in each submodule, containing `submodule_name.rst` files to document that module.  I then want to suck those files into the master hierarchy to create a spec for the entire design.  

I.e.:

However this error message results:

I&#39;m having some trouble setting up Apache on Ubuntu. I&#39;ve been following [this guide][1].

    # /usr/sbin/apache2 -v

My public directory, /var/www, can successfully serve up and execute PHP pages that are placed in it. However, I want to create a symlink in /var/www that points to a directory in my home folder and serve pages there.

Apache won&#39;t follow symlinks (403 Forbidden)

I am trying to create soft links between config files containing server blocks in the sites-enabled and sites-available directories in /etc/nginx/.

The command I am using is:

    sudo ln -s sites-available/foo.conf sites-enabled/

When I then execute:

    ls -l

The result is:

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 parallels parallels 27 Aug  6 20:44 immigrationinformation.conf -&gt; immigrationinformation.conf

where the `immigrationinformation.conf -&gt; immigrationinformation.conf` part has a charcoal with red typeface.

When I then try and access this soft-link, I am told that it is broken.

When I create the soft-link in the sites-available directory i.e.

    sudo ln -s sites-available/foo.conf sites-available/foo_link.conf

it works as normal. However, if I then move this to the sites-enabled directory, the link is broken again.

I can create the soft link via the file manager GUI but not via the command line. I can also create hard-links with no problem.

I suspected it was a permissions issue so I have played around with setting all permissions to 777 of both directories and the directories themselves and also changing the owners to something other than root, but still with no luck.

Any help would me much appreciated, thank you.


 

Nginx sites-enabled, sites-available: Cannot create soft-link between config files in Ubuntu 12.04

Here&#39;s a rather elementary *nix question:

Given the following symlink creation:

    ln -s /usr/local/projects/myproject/ myproject

... from my home directory **/home/jvf/**, entering the **myproject** symlink gives me a pwd **/home/jfv/myproject/**. Now, I would like to enter the parent directory of the directory I&#39;ve symlinked to, but the **cd ..** command will only bring me back to my home directory **/home/jfv/**. Is there anyway to escape the symlink trail that I&#39;ve entered, and instead have a pwd equal to the actual path of the **myproject** directory. That is, changing my pwd from **/home/jfv/myproject/** into **/usr/local/projects/myproject/**?

I would assume that it leaves it as a symbolic link until the file is deleted and then if you pull the file back from an old version it just creates a normal file.

I have a folder on my server to which I had a number of symbolic links pointing. I&#39;ve since created a new folder and I want to change all those symbolic links to point to the new folder. This question has appeared in similar forms [here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5917249/git-symlinks-in-windows) and [here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5190170/ignoring-symlinks-in-git), but they don&#39;t seem to match up with what I&#39;m looking for.

I&#39;m making a project in StaticMatic, a Ruby static site generator. Basically, it&#39;s just a src/  directory with Haml templates, Sass, and CoffeeScript. StaticMatic provides a development server to keep compiling these into a static site, as well as a build command that generates the static site in build/.

My modification to StaticMatic is to allow the addition of src/_modules/foo/, which might contain src/_modules/foo/bar.haml. When running the server or building the site, a symlink would be created at src/bar.haml which points to the file in foo/.

So far so good. (Conflicts are handled, etc.)

The reasoning behind separate directories in _modules/ is that they could be tracked as git submodules and checked out independently by other teams. Essentially, this allows multiple teams to work on different pages (actually JS apps) in one static site without duplicating the main layout and such.

The hitch is that git wants to think of these symlinks as files. For instance, `git status` shows:

    # On branch master
    # Untracked files:
    #   (use &quot;git add &lt;file&gt;...&quot; to include in what will be commited)
    #
    #       src/_modules/bar/foo.haml
    #       src/foo.haml

...when I really just want it to show `src/_modules/bar/foo.haml` and to ignore `src/foo.haml`

One approach would be to have my link-generating code append the links to .gitignore, but messing with .gitignore programmatically strikes me as prone to error. (Perhaps this concern isn&#39;t reasonable?)

My ideal fix would be something like:

    [filetype = link]

...in .gitignore. As far as I know nothing like this is possible, or is it?

    $ readlink -f dirA/orig.file 
    /tmp/orig.file
    $ readlink -f dirB/lorig.file 
    /tmp/orig.file

... However, what I&#39;d like to know is - is there a command I could run on the &#39;original&#39; file, and find all the symlinks that point to it? In other words, something like (pseudo):

    $ getsymlinks /tmp/orig.file
    /tmp/dirA/orig.file 
    /tmp/dirB/lorig.file

However, building the images fails, because Docker can&#39;t handle the symlinks. I should mention my project is far more complicated than this, so restructuring directories isn&#39;t a great option. How do I deal with this situation?

I&#39;ve tried this command:

    find /var/www/ -type l

&amp;hellip; and later I discovered that the contents in `/var/www` are symlinks, so I&#39;ve changed the command to: 

    find -L /var/www/ -type l

it take a while to run, however I&#39;m getting no matches.

When you do 

    cat some-symlink-to-some-real-file

it shows the contents of the real file, not what is within the symlink itself. Is there a way to see what&#39;s actually in it?

Following on from a [previous question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/221417/how-do-i-programmatically-access-the-target-path-of-a-windows-symbolic-link), I am creating a symbolic link on a Server 2008 from a Vista machine using UNC paths. I can create the link just fine. I can go to the Server 2008 box and double click on the link in explorer to open the target file. What I cannot do though is use FileCreateW to get a handle to the UNC path link (from the Vista box). When I try it, it fails and GetLastError() returns error code 1463 (0x5B7), which is:

&gt; The symbolic link cannot be followed because its type is disabled.

How to enable its &quot;type&quot; in Server 2008 (assuming the error means what it says)?
