I&#39;m having trouble representing a mobile number in one of my applications.

I was wondering if there is an Integer class that will allow you to store such a number starting with 0417254482. Perhaps using a string be a more appropriate?
At present when I&#39;m trying to use represent a phone number with ints, doubles longs I seem to store random numbers and not the numbers I meant to store.

What&#39;s the right way to represent phone numbers?

I would like to retrieve the name of a contact associated with an incoming telephone number. As I process the incoming number in the broascastreceiver having a String with the name of the incoming caller would help my project greatly.

I would think this involves a query using the sql WHERE clause as a filter, but do I need to sort the contacts? An example or hint would be of great assistance.

What&#39;s the longest possible worldwide phone number I should consider in SQL `varchar(length)` for phone.

considerations:

 - \+ for country code
 - \() for area code
 - x + 6 numbers for Extension extension (so make it 8 {space})
 - spaces between groups (i.e. in American phones +x xxx xxx xxxx = 3 spaces)
 - here is where I need your help, I want it to be worldwide


Consider that in my particular case now, I don&#39;t need cards etc. number begins with country code and ends with the extension, no Fax/Phone etc. comments, nor calling card stuff needed.

Now its gets messed up when the extension is less than 4 digits. It will fill in the numbers from the right. so

    1112224444 333  becomes

    11-221-244 3334

Any ideas?

Quick add on requirement in our project.  A field in our DB to hold a phone number is set to only allow 10 characters. I&#39;m trying to call a number not using specific numbers but a number that is being called in a variable or at least tell it to pull up the number in your phone. This number that is being called in a variable is a number that I retrieved by using a parser or grabbing from a website sql. I made a button trying to call the phone number stored in the variable with a function but to no avail. Anything will help thanks!

Calling a phone number in swift

I want to mark up a phone number as callable link in an HTML document. I have read [the microformats approach](http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard-faq#How_do_you_mark_up_a_phone_extension), and I know, that the `tel:` scheme would be standard, but is quite literally nowhere implemented.

Skype defines, as far as I know, `skype:` and `callto:`, the latter having gained some popularity. I assume, that other companies have either other schemes or jump on the `callto:` train.

What would be a best practice to mark-up a phone number, so that as many people as possible with VoIP software can just click on a link to get a call?

Bonus question: Does anyone know about complications with emergency numbers such as 911 in US or 110 in Germany?

**Update:** Microsoft NetMeeting takes `callto:` schemes under WinXP. [This question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1009181/url-scheme-for-phone-call) suggests, that Microsoft Office Communicator will handle `tel:` schemes but not `callto:` ones. Great, Redmond!

**Update 2:** Two and a half years later now. It seems to boil down to what you want to do with the number. In mobile context, `tel:` is the way to go. Targeting desktops it&#39;s up to you, if you think your users are more Skype people (`callto:`) or will more likely have something like Google Voice (`tel:`) installed. My personal opinion is, when in doubt use `tel:` (in line with @Sidnicious&#39; answer).

**Update 3:** User @rybo111 noted, that Skype in Chrome has meanwhile jumped on the `tel:` bandwagon. I cannot verify this, because no machine with both at hand, but if it&#39;s true, it means we have finally a winner here: `tel:`
