I&#39;m using `ls -a` command to get the file names in a directory, but the output is in a single line. 

Like this:

    .  ..  .bash_history  .ssh  updater_error_log.txt

I need a built-in alternative to get filenames, each on a new line, like this:

    .  
    ..  
    .bash_history  
    .ssh  
    updater_error_log.txt

I&#39;ve got to get a directory listing that contains about 2 million files, but when I do an `ls` command on it nothing comes back. I&#39;ve waited 3 hours. I&#39;ve tried `ls | tee directory.txt`, but that seems to hang forever. 

I assume the server is doing a lot of inode sorting. Is there any way to speed up the `ls` command to just get a directory listing of filenames? I don&#39;t care about size, dates, permission or the like at this time.

    ls -LR | grep .txt

It doesn&#39;t include the full paths. For example, I have the following directory structure:

    test1/file.txt

The code above will return:

    file.txt
    file1.txt
    file2.txt

How can I get it to include the paths relative to the current directory using standard Unix commands?

`ls /home/user/new/*.txt` prints all txt files in that directory. However it prints the output as follows:

For this reason, I need to generate recursive file listings with full paths. For example, the file `bar` has the path:

    /home/ken/foo/bar

but, as far as I can see, both `ls` and `find` only give relative path listings:

If you are a linux enthusiast and really miss those greps and sed/awks on the windows box, you&#39;ve probably installed [cygwin][1]. You tried running it either by double-clicking the cygwin icon on your desktop or the `cygwin.bat` file in your `C:\cygwin` directory and got the `bash-3.X$` prompt. However, although the `pwd` or `cd` commands work, if you try `ls`, it says:`ls: command not found`.

I am using `ls -l -t` to get a list of files in a directory ordered by time. 

I would like to limit the search result to the top 2 files in the list.&lt;br/&gt;
Is this possible?&lt;br/&gt;

I often use this list command in Unix (AIX / KSH):

`ls -Artl`

It displays the files as this:

I would like to modify the command such a way that the full path of the file is displayed. For example:

`-rw-r--r-- 1 myuser mygroup   0 Apr  2 11:59 /usr/test2.txt`

Any ideas?

I found several resolution methods using `pwd` or `find` but - as far as I see - this does not work work if I want to keep the `ls` options.

I thought I understood *nix pipes until now... I have an executable called `studio` which symlinks to my install of `Android Studio` and I had assumed I could get the linked-to location with 

    which studio | ls -l

But that doesn&#39;t work. What it gives me is equivalent to having just run `ls -l` in the current directory.

If I run `which studio`, I get `/home/me/bin/studio`. And if I run `ls -l /home/me/bin/studio` I get the expected output showing me the symlink location.

So why doesn&#39;t the piped version work? What haven&#39;t I grokked about pipes?
