What I essentially want is the ability to do something like the following but using Python and not executing ls.

If there is no built-in method for this, I am currently thinking of writing a for loop to iterate through the results of an `os.listdir()` and to append all the matching files to a new list.

However, there are a lot of files in that directory and therefore I am hoping there is a more efficient method (or a built-in method).

I&#39;ve taken a look at [`org.apache.commons.io.filefilter.WildcardFileFilter`][1] and it seems like the right beast but I&#39;m not sure how to use it for finding files in a relative directory path.

I suppose I can look the source for ant since it uses wildcard syntax, but I must be missing something pretty obvious here.

(**edit**: the above example was just a sample case. I&#39;m looking for the way to parse general paths containing wildcards at runtime. I figured out how to do it based on mmyers&#39; suggestion but it&#39;s kind of annoying. Not to mention that the java JRE seems to auto-parse simple wildcards in the main(String[] arguments) from a single argument to &quot;save&quot; me time and hassle... I&#39;m just glad I didn&#39;t have non-file arguments in the mix.)

I am reading about generic methods from [OracleDocGenericMethod][1]. I am pretty confused about the comparison when it says when to use wild-card and when to use generic methods.
Quoting from the document.

Sitting in the directory A of server1, I ran the following commands.

but the interesting thing is, it synchronizes all files and directories except .htaccess or any hidden file in the directory A. Any hidden files within subdirectories get synchronized.

I also tried the following command:

    rsync -av --include=&quot;.htaccess&quot; * server2::sharename/B

but the results are the same.

Any ideas why hidden files of A directory are not getting synchronized and how to fix it. I am running as root user.

Is there is a good way to add a new value to existing `Stream`? All I can imagine is something like this:

Adding new value to existing Stream

I would like to match strings with a wildcard (*), where the wildcard means &quot;any&quot;. For example:

    *X = string must end with X
    X* = string must start with X
    *X* = string must contain X

Also, some compound uses such as:

    *X*YZ* = string contains X and contains YZ
    X*YZ*P = string starts with X, contains YZ and ends with P.

Is there a simple algorithm to do this?  I&#39;m unsure about using regex (though it is a possibility).

To clarify, the users will type in the above to a filter box (as simple a filter as possible), I don&#39;t want them to have to write regular expressions themselves.  So something I can easily transform from the above notation would be good.

I would like a method that takes a `List&lt;T&gt;` where `T` implements `Comparable` and returns `true` or `false` depending on whether the list is sorted or not.

What is the best way to implement this in Java?  It&#39;s obvious that generics and wildcards are meant to be able to handle such things easily, but I&#39;m getting all tangled up.

It would also be nice to have an analogous method to check if the list is in reverse order.

What I would like to do is to checkout a single file or a set of files with a common name part like this

`git checkout myBranch */myFile.md` and

`git checkout myBranch -- */*Test*` (not sure about the &#39;--&#39; part)

instead of

`git checkout myBranch src/test/java/a/deep/package/structure/TestOne.java`&lt;br&gt;

I know there is some limited wildcard functionality for some git command like `diff` and `add` but have found nothing for `checkout`. Is there a way?

EDIT: I am using git 1.7.9.5 on Linux. A working combination of git and shell commmands would be acceptable as well.

I am having a bit of trouble with the routing.

I&#39;m working on a CMS, and I need two primary routes. `/admin` and `/(:any)`. The `admin` controller is used for the route `/admin`, and the `view` controller should be used for anything else than `/admin`. From the `view` controller, I will then parse the url and show the correct content.

This is what I have:

    Route::get(array(&#39;admin&#39;, &#39;admin/dashboard&#39;), array(&#39;as&#39; =&gt; &#39;admin&#39;, &#39;uses&#39; =&gt;&#39;admin.dashboard@index&#39;));

The first route works, but the second one doesn&#39;t. I played around with it a little bit, and it seems if I use `(:any)` without the question mark, it only works if I put something after `/`. If i *do* put the question mark there, it doesn&#39;t work at all.

I want all of the following routes to go to view@index:

    /
    /something
    /something/something
    /something/something/something
    /something/something/something/something
    ...etc...

Is this possible without hardcoding a bunch of `(:any?)/(:any?)/(:any?)/(:any?)` (which I don&#39;t even know works)?

What&#39;s the best way to go about this?

Laravel - Using (:any?) wildcard for ALL routes?

When I try to do a basic `git add *.erb` (or any simple wildcard expressions) git is not recognizing it (them). As a side-note, I have never done this before so I&#39;m sure it&#39;s a rookie mistake, but I&#39;ve found no help in other SO posts or my school&#39;s alumni listserv so I thought this post may be appropriate.

For (a different) example, **git status** is giving me:

    #	modified:   config/routes.rb
    #	modified:   spec/models/question_spec.rb

I wanted to only stage the routes file, so I tried **git add *s.rb** and no dice. I am in the root of the app...do I need to be in the directory that contains the file(s) I&#39;m trying to apply the wildcard expression to? That would be painful, but...actually...it just worked.

Hope this doesn&#39;t have to be a separate post, but is there an easier way to use wildcards where you don&#39;t have to cd into the specific directory?

In fact, let&#39;s go back to the simpler `LOLUnknowns1` (two unbounded wildcards) and try to see if we can in fact invoke `probablyIllegal` in any way. Let&#39;s try the &quot;easy&quot; case first and choose the same type for the two wildcards ([as seen on ideone.com](http://ideone.com/PzN9N)):

* What types of arguments does `probablyIllegal` accept?
* Should `lol.add(list);` compile at all? Is it typesafe?
* Is this a compiler bug or am I misunderstanding the capture conversion rules for wildcards?

Multiple wildcards on a generic methods makes Java compiler (and me!) very confused

Just wondering which one is the best way to use import:

`import * as Foo from &#39;./foo&#39;;`

VS:

`import { bar, bar2, bar3 } from &#39;./foo&#39;;`

In terms of efficiency, say for example, I&#39;m using webpack for bundling all the JavaScript files. Will the first one actually importing everything even though I&#39;m not using them in the main code?

PHP file_exists and wildcard

One rule in my Makefile zips an entire directory (`res/`) into a ZIP file. Obviously, this rule needs to execute when *any* file under the `res/` directory changes. Thus, I want the rule to have as a prerequisite all files underneath that directory. How can I implement this rule?

In Bash [with the `globstar` option enabled](https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/49913/recursive-glob/49917#49917), you can obtain a list of all the files in that directory using the wildcard pattern `res/**/*`. However, it doesn&#39;t seem to work if you specify it as a prerequisite in the Makefile:

    filename.jar: res/**/*

Even after `touch`ing a file in `res/`, Make still reports

    make: `filename.jar&#39; is up to date.

so clearly it is not recognizing the pattern.

If I declare the directory itself as a prerequisite:

    filename.jar: res

then Make will not re-execute when a file is modified (I think `make` only looks at the modified date of the directory itself, which only changes when immediate children are added, removed, or renamed).

I&#39;d like to check if there are any `.rar` files in a directory. It doesn’t need to be recursive.

I have mongodb with a `$text-Index` and elements like this:

    {
       foo: &quot;my super cool item&quot;
    }
    {
       foo: &quot;your not so cool item&quot;
    }

If i do search with 

    mycoll.find({ $text: { $search: &quot;super&quot;} })

i get the first item (correct).

But i also want to search with &quot;uper&quot; to get the fist item - but if i try:

    mycoll.find({ $text: { $search: &quot;uper&quot;} })

I dont get any results.

My Question:
If there is a way to use $text so its finds results with a part of the searching string? (e.g. like `&#39;%uper%&#39;` in `mysql`)

**Attention: I dont ask for a regex only search - i ask for a regex-search within a $text-search!**
