I want to create a `.htaccess` file manually and discovered it seems impossible through the Windows UI. I get a *&quot;you must type a filename.&quot;* message. There has to be a way to create files with `.` as a prefix in Windows.

Can this be done manually?

Using Windows&amp;nbsp;XP I accidentally typed `git commit -a` instead of `git commit -am &quot;My commit message&quot;`, and now I&#39;m viewing my CMD prompt filled with the file version of my commit message (&quot;Please enter the commit message for your...&quot;). I&#39;ve added my message to the top, but now I can&#39;t figure out how to save and leave. I tried to press &lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt; + &lt;kbd&gt;W&lt;/kbd&gt; + &lt;kbd&gt;Q&lt;/kbd&gt;, but it doesn&#39;t do anything, but add `^` where the cursor is.

I also tried &lt;kbd&gt;Esc&lt;/kbd&gt; first, and then &lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt; + &lt;kbd&gt;W&lt;/kbd&gt; + &lt;kbd&gt;Q&lt;/kbd&gt;, but it says `No write since last change (add ! to override)`.

Other details:

I have a set of base filenames, for each name &#39;f&#39; there are exactly two files, &#39;f.in&#39; and &#39;f.out&#39;.  I want to write a batch file (in Windows XP) which goes through all the filenames, for each one it should:

  - Display the base name &#39;f&#39;
  - Perform an action on &#39;f.in&#39;
  - Perform another action on &#39;f.out&#39;

I don&#39;t have any way to list the set of base filenames, other than to search for *.in (or *.out) for example.

Is it possible to download the Android SDK components for offline install without using the SDK Manager?
The problem is I am behind a firewall which I have no control over and both sites download URLs seem to be blocked (throws a connection refused exception)

I have a &quot;setup&quot; script which I run in the morning which starts all the programs that I need. Now some of those need additional setup of the environment, so I need to wrap them in small BAT scripts.

How do I run such a script on Windows XP in the background?

`CALL env-script.bat` runs it synchronously, i.e. the setup script can continue only after the command in the env-script has terminated.

`START/B env-script.bat` runs another instance of CMD.exe in the same command prompt, leaving it in a really messy state (I see the output of the nested CMD.exe, keyboard is dead for a while, script is not executed).

`START/B CMD env-script.bat` yields the same result. None of the flags in CMD seem to match my bill.

I&#39;m using a xcopy in an XP windows script to recursively copy a directory.  I keep getting an &#39;Insufficient Memory&#39; error, which I understand is because a file I&#39;m trying to copy has too long a path.  I can easily reduce the path length, but unfortunately I can&#39;t work out which files are violating the path length restriction.  The files that are copied are printed to the standard output (which I&#39;m redirecting to a log file), but the error message is printed to the terminal, so I can&#39;t even work out approximately which directory the error is being given for.

I&#39;m working on a Java project that uses the JNI.  The JNI calls a custom library that I&#39;ve written myself, let&#39;s say mylib.dll, and that depends on a 3rd party library, libsndfile-1.dll.

When I run my program it crashes with 

    java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError:  C:\...path...\mylib.dll: Can&#39;t find dependent libraries.

I&#39;ve searched this site (and others) and I&#39;ve tried a number of fixes:

1. I ran dependency walker. DW gave a couple of warnings -- that two libraries required by libsndfile, MPR.DLL and SHLWAPI.DLL, had &quot;unresolved imports&quot; -- but the [DW FAQ][1] said that these warnings could be safely ignored. 

2. I fixed the method names in mylib.dll, as suggested [here][2].  The method names had somehow gotten mangled by the compiler, but I added linker flags and the dll method names now match those in my jni header file exactly.

3. I put all of these DLLs in the same directory -- the same directory as the .jar that calls them -- to ensure that they&#39;re on the right PATH.

No dice.

Does anyone have any idea what&#39;s going on?

I&#39;m doing my development in Visual Studio 2010 on a MacBook pro (via Parallels). I&#39;m doing my testing in Windows XP on a toshiba laptop.

Maybe a way to alter the colors locally (as in application dependant)?

A background color of eclipse is white, the same white of windows&#39; active window background color. If I change the color on the theme, eclipse changes to the color.

I want to change this software&#39;s color without changing the whole theme (because then every program gets weird colors). Is this possible? I thought that maybe there was a way to apply different windows themes to different programs, or something.

Eclipse&#39;s Package explorer background color follows windows theme. I want to change the color without changing windows&#39; theme. Possible?

Used _`git clone [url]`_ to clone an open source project but it cloned to the 

**`C:\Documents and Setings\$USER\project`**

What I wanted to do is clone the project to **`C:\project`**. I don&#39;t want to have duplicate project clones on my local machine.

How do I go about moving it to that location or deleting the existing repository(hopefully that&#39;s a correct term) and cloning it again?

I assume after deleting I should use something like the following to clone it to the desired location?

Windows could not start the Apache2 on Local Computer - problem

I downloaded [JDK8][1] build b121 and while trying to install I&#39;m getting the following error:

to install &amp; config apache
get the PHP5 packages
and get the CURL packages.

I run the apache and run a PHP script. no problem.
but when I run the php script with curl, it fails. 

It returns:  `**Call to undefined function curl_version() in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\testing.php on line 5**`

In which line 5 is a called to `curl_init()`

I output the php -i  to see whether the right path to extension is called.  It is correctly set:

    extension_dir =&gt; C:\PHP\ext =&gt; C:\PHP\ext
    cURL support =&gt; enabled
    cURL Information =&gt; libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3

I even tried to run `curl_version()`  but still, same kind of error comes up.  
It looks like the PHP can&#39;t find the CURL extension, but the `php.ini` (and also php -i) shows that it is set.

any idea? :)

The reason I need to use CURL is that it is the requirement from my project.  So, I can only stick with that.

I have tried a lot of things on installing cURL and check everything, but still, I&#39;m stilling circling around the problem and have no idea what&#39;s going on.  

The Apache server uses the right PHP.ini.  and the PHP.ini has the correct extension_dir and extension=php_curl.dll

I have many scripts which I interact with from the command line. Everytime I need to use them, I have to open a command line window and copy+paste and CD to the path to the directory they are in. This is tedious (they are in a rather deep file system, so typing out the full path is a pain, copy+paste is better but not much). I tried to create a .BAT file that I could double-click on that would open a new command-line window *in the folder the .bat file exists in* but it does not work. It opens a new window, but the working directory is not the directory that .bat file is in. Here&#39;s what I&#39;ve got after much googling (My cmd skills ain&#39;t so great):

    cd %CD%
    cmd.exe

I know from when I used Linux that Konqueror had a &quot;Command-line window here&quot; feature, and that&#39;s the effect I&#39;m trying to get on Windows.

[I already know](http://vimdoc.sourceforge.net/htmldoc/options.html#%27diffopt%27) how to use the `diffopt` variable to start diff mode with horizontal/vertical splits but not how to toggle between the two when I already have two files open for comparison.

I&#39;m using *Python 2.6*.  Sometimes there become several instances of a certain process open, and that process causes some problems in itself.  I want to be able to programatically detect that there are multiple instances of that process and to kill them.

For example, maybe in some cases there are 50 instances of make.exe open.  I want to be able to tell that there are 20 instances open, and to kill them all.  How is this accomplished?
