I am using `Jekyll` and `Vagrant` on my mac. I found that `Jekyll server` will bind to `0.0.0.0:4000` instead of `127.0.0.1:4000`. Also `gem server` will bind to this address by default. I can still visit it via `http://localhost:port`. But for `Jekyll`, **it seems that the default setting (e.g. 0.0.0.0:4000) requires Internet access. I cannot run `Jekyll server` without Internet.** Is it a  small bug?

I also use `Vagrant`. I have set port forwarding(8080 =&gt; 4000) in Vagrantfile, since I install `Jekyll` in `Vagrant` virtual machine and test it under Macintosh. If I use the default setting (0.0.0.0:4000), it works. I can visit it from my safari with `http://localhost:8080`. But if there is not internet, I cannot bind to 0.0.0.0:4000. I use `jekyll server -H 127.0.0.1` to bind service to `127.0.0.1:4000` instead, then I cannot visit it via `http://localhost:8080`.

Can anyone **explain the difference between 0.0.0.0, 127.0.0.1 and localhost**? And can anyone **explain why the difference will cause this problem**?

I am trying to develop a system where there are different nodes that are run on different system or on different ports on the same system. 

Now all the nodes create a Socket with a target IP as the IP of a special node known as a bootstrapping node. The nodes then create their own `ServerSocket` and start listening for connections. 

The bootstrapping node maintains a list of Nodes and returns them on being queried.

Now what I need is the node must register its IP to the bootstrapping node. I tried using `cli.getInetAddress()` once the client connects to the `ServerSocket` of bootstrapping node but that didn&#39;t work.

 1. I need the client to register its PPP IP if available;
 2. Otherwise the LAN IP if available; 
 3. Otherwise it must register 127.0.0.1 assuming its the same computer.

Using the code:

    System.out.println(Inet4Address.getLocalHost().getHostAddress());

or

    System.out.println(InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress());

My PPP Connection IP address is: 117.204.44.192 but the above returns me 192.168.1.2

Well, it&#39;s working properly, but the thing is, this returns the country code like US or CA., and not the whole country name like United States or Canada.

So, is there any good alternative to hostip.info offers this?

I know that I can just write some code that will eventually turn this two letters to whole country name, but I&#39;m just too lazy to write a code that contains all countries...

I&#39;m writing a very simple net filter, and getting to where I want to parse IPv6 headers to match things like ICMPv6 types, TCP/UDP port numbers, etc.

So I&#39;m reading about the [IPv6 packet format][1] in depth, and I&#39;m kind of like... well... I sort of had to read it over and over again to make sure I was actually reading it right.
It looks to me that you have to start with the 40-byte fixed header and look at its next header field. Then you have to look at the next header&#39;s next header field, and so on, like a linked list, until you reach the end. If there&#39;s payload, it will follow.

The problem is that there is no length field either in the fixed header or the extension headers. You have to have a table of extension header types and their sizes so that you can chase this linked list to the end.

This strikes me as a strange, possibly even hare-brained design. What if I encounter an unrecognized extension header type? What do I do? I don&#39;t know its length. I guess I have to throw the packet out and block it, since in a net filter allowing the packet through would allow an attacker to evade the net filter by including a bogus header type. *But that means that if the protocol is ever extended, every single piece of IPv6 header parsing software ever written must be simultaneously updated if the new extension is to be used.*

So how can I parse IPv6 headers if I don&#39;t know the extensions they&#39;re using? How can I skip a header for an unknown extension, since I don&#39;t know its length?

According to the API it is possible to create an Object providing a String representing a hostname (e.g. `www.google.ch`). This is not an option for me since I do not have the hostname for each InetAddress object I want to create(besides that it takes too long).

I&#39;ve found `http://ip-address.domaintools.com/myip.xml`, which is exactly what I want, but unfortunately it blocks Python&#39;s `urllib` as well as many other http libraries, unless you spoof user-agent (anything doing that can&#39;t be called an API at all).

I understand it&#39;s a standard practice to look at both these variables. Of course they can easily be spoofed. I&#39;m curious how often can you expect these values (especially the `HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR`) to contain genuine information and not just be scrambled or have their values stripped away?

**Note:** Looking for server side solution.

Now when you normally run this command theres a ton of output.

What I&#39;d like to have is a script that would show only the IP address, for example.

We&#39;ve got a server over which we&#39;re running a Django powered site. Since we want to test the site, we&#39;re using Django&#39;s build-in development server (i.e `runserver`).  But I&#39;m curious about the ip of the following command:

    python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:80

It results in a running site we can visit using server&#39;s ip remotely.  
But when using `127.0.0.1` instead:

    python manage.py runserver 127.0.0.1:80

No one can visit the site with the sever&#39;s ip from another pc.

So why? What does `0.0.0.0` exactly means (Google says it&#39;s the default route) ?  Why can&#39;t `127.0.0.1:80` be accessed remotely?

just a question for my understanding. on my mac when I use `ifconfig` command on my mac I get the following interfaces:

 - en1
 - lo0
 - fw0

I don&#39;t understand what it *means* to `bind` a socket to any address other than 127.0.0.1 (or ::1, etc.).  
Am I not -- *by definition* -- binding the socket to a port on **my own** machine.. which is localhost?  
What sense does it make to bind or listen to *another* machine or IP address&#39;s port?  
Conceptually, it just doesn&#39;t make sense to me!
