We can see the growth of systems using peer to peer principles.
But there is an area where peer to peer is not (yet) widely used: web hosting.

Several projects are already launched, but there is no big solution which would permit users to use and to contribute to a peer to peer webhosting.

I don&#39;t mean not-open projects (like Google Web Hosting, which use Google resources, not users&#39;), but open projects, where each user contribute to the hosting of the global web hosting by letting its resources (cpu, bandwidth) be available.

I can think of several assets of such systems:

- automatic load balancing
- better locality
- no storage limits
- free

So, why such a system is not yet widely used ?

I think that the &quot;97.2%, plz seed!!&quot; problem occurs because all users do not seed all the files. But if a system where all users equally contribute to all the content is built, this problem does not occur any more. Peer to peer storage systems (like Wuala) are reliable, thanks to that.

The problem of proprietary code is pertinent, as well of the fact that an user might not know which content (possibly &quot;bad&quot;) he is hosting.

I add another problem: the latency which may be higher than with a dedicated server.

The confidentiality of code and data can be achieved by encryption. For example, with Wuala, all files are encrypted, and I think there is no known security breach in this system (but I might be wrong).

It&#39;s true that seeders would not have many benefits, or few. But it would prevent people from being dependent of web hosting companies. And such a decentralized way to host websites is closer of the original idea of the internet, I think.

Why is p2p web hosting not widely used?

I have been reading through the backlog of answered questions on SO regarding &quot;How to promote an open source project&quot;. Not surprisingly, many of the answers pointed people to SoureForge/FreshMeat and other sites etc as well as blogging and whatnot. This started me thinking where is the best place to host a project and why?

As my first project is currently hosted on CodePlex, I started to wade through the Google search results to collect information on the pros/cons of each; however the comparisons that I found are rather dated (2+ years old).

Based on the current state of various Open Source hosting sites such as CodePlex, GitHub, Google Code, SourceForge, etc, etc is there any notable pros/cons of one site over the other? i.e., should I stick with CodePlex or am I missing out by not using one of the alternatives? Will one bring about more traffic to a new and unknown project?

I plan on exploring each site in more detail to see what they all offer, but given the vast knowledge of the good folks on SO, figured I would start with this question first.

As per erjiang answer below... I am currently using Mercurial for version control, and I am open to anything other than TFS. Also, my current project is only me developing, but future projects may be collaborative so worth considering...

Where to host an Open Source Project: CodePlex, Google Code, SourceForge?

I was experimenting with a new feature that comes with .net core sdk 2.2 that is supposedly meant to improve performance by around 400%.

Impressive so I tried it out on my ABP (*ASP.NET Boilerplate*) project

Unfortunately I do not think this version of the ABP framework is compatible as the project simply fails to run and throws: (eventually)

HTTP Error 500.30 - ANCM In-Process Start Failure

Say if I was to get shared, virtual or dedicated hosting, I read somewhere a server/machine can only handle 64,000 TCP connections at one time, is this true? How many could any type of hosting handle regardless of bandwidth? I&#39;m assuming HTTP works over TCP.

Would this mean only 64,000 users could connect to the website, and if I wanted to serve more I&#39;d have to move to a web farm?

I&#39;m developing an ASP MVC web project. Now I have a requirement which forces me to deploy to an IIS7 inmiddle of development (to check some features). I&#39;m getting the above mentioned error message whenever I try to type the URL of the web site. (Note: development machine: Vista Home Premium, IIS7)

What I have done until now:

Edited the HOSTS file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts).

Put two domains in it (127.0.0.1  domain1.com   &amp;   127.0.0.1  domain2.com).

Created a folder c:\websites\dirOfApplication and deployed from within Visual Studio 8 to this folder.

In IIS7 created a new site with host name domain1.com and application folder the above.

Typing the address domain1.com in Web browser results in the above error (HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden - The Web server is configured to not list the contents of this directory.)

I think I&#39;m missing something but don&#39;t know what! Tryed to deploy the files  System.Web.Mvc, System.Web.Abstraction &amp; System.Web.Routing wit the same outcome. Whenever I try to hit F5 and run the application, it works fine!

ASP MVC in IIS 7 results in: HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden

I&#39;m trying to host a subdomain for my site with a different hosting company and I&#39;m running into issues on how to set it up.

Here are the specifics:
- Domain is registered with GoDaddy. 
- Nameservers are pointing to DiscountASP.net where ASP.NET app has been happily running for couple of years.
- Would like blog.mydomain.com to point to my account with DreamHost.com to take advantage of their LAMP stack.

I have added blog.mydomain.com to DreamHost (after adding mydomain.com) via their control panel. I thought I would be able to add a subdomain entry on GoDaddy to point to DreamHost, but all they allow is blog.mydomain.com = new url.

In theory I could just take our .biz or .net domain and host it on DreamHost but was hoping I could do it all with a subdomain.

So, to summarize I&#39;d like to know if what I want to do is feasible and if so, how do I go about it (given the constraints of GoDaddy, DiscountASP, &amp; DreamHost).

I&#39;m working on a little webapp (all client-side) I want to host it on Amazon S3. I&#39;ve found several guides on this and have managed to create myself a bucket (with the same name as my domain), set it as a website and upload some content.

Where I&#39;m struggling, and where all the documentation starts to get a bit vague, is how to properly configure my DNS.

All my registrar ([123-reg][1]) could suggest was web forwarding which gives me mydomain.com.s3.amazonaws.com

What do I have to configure, and where (ie. 123-reg / Amazon) can I get a clean URL?

Static hosting on Amazon S3 - DNS Configuration

I&#39;m hosting on Heroku. When I push:

    git push master Heroku

I get the error:

    error: src refspec master does not match any.
    error: failed to push some refs to &#39;git@heroku.com: etc ...&#39;

Serving javascript libraries from a CDN instead of your own server comes with tremendous advantages.  Less work for your server, possibility for the CDN to have a copy closer to the user than your server, but most importantly a good chance that your user&#39;s browser already has it cached from that URL.  The last one means less total work for everybody, so it&#39;s clearly a win all around, and is more likely the more often we (developers) rely on the CDNs to serve our javascript.

But the popular javascript CDNs (Google, Microsoft, others?) only host a small number of files.  For others we have the choice of hosting them ourselves, or ... using the source control server as a kind of CDN.  It&#39;s unlikely Github or similar has a geographically distributed cache of files optimized for serving globally.  But if it&#39;s common practice, then there is a decent chance that the user&#39;s browser will have it cached.  The argument of off-loading work from our servers to github is only valid if Github has willingly volunteered to do this.

So, is it common practice?  Should we encourage each other to do this?  Does Github mind?  Do they have an official policy stated?


Should Github be used as a CDN for javascript libraries?

I am trying to push my app to heroku and I get the following message: 

    $ heroku create

    fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

It&#39;s weird that I am getting this now, I have pushed the app to heroku many times without issue.  the especially weird thing is, `fierce-fog-63` is an old app that I made and deleted a long time ago.  Why is it now that heroku is trying to push to this app that doesn&#39;t exist anymore, especially when I have created a new one?  Any suggestions?

Amazon.com just announced that one can host static web sites in a S3 bucket. I went to their setup page at http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/index.html?WebsiteHosting.html and created a bucket for my static web site, and it worked fine. I have an URL of the form http://[my bucket name].s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/. 

However, I would like to point a subdomain that I own (e.g. static.mydomain.com) to my static web site at Amazon S3. Has anybody figured out how to do that?

Difference between Amazon EC2 and AWS Elastic Beanstalk

I have a number of websites that run under IIS on a single machine.

Should I put these websites inside of the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ folder or inside the C:\inetpub\ folder?

E.g. 

 - C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Website1\
 - C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Website2\

or

 - C:\inetpub\Website1\
 - C:\inetpub\Website2\


Are there any pros/cons for either or another recommended location (I only have a C drive on this machine)?  

I am not sure whether there is a &quot;correct&quot; answer to this, but want to follow best practice if there is one.

How to deploy a meteor application to my own server?

I&#39;m looking to set up a TeamCity server for continuously building a .NET web application. I already have hosting, so I don&#39;t want to get a whole new hosting account such as AppHarbor.

I don&#39;t maintain my own physical server, nor do I want to.

I also don&#39;t want to have to pay $50 or more per month for an entire dedicated Windows machine, just to host TeamCity.

I really don&#39;t care if it&#39;s slow and on a shared machine, as it&#39;s just continuous build which will be running in the background.

I&#39;ll want to have the outputs automatically deployed to a server of my choice through FTP.

In the meanwhile, I&#39;ve bough the `casperjs.org` domain to get this website available through it, so I put a `CNAME` file as [recommended in the docs](http://pages.github.com/#custom_domains): https://github.com/n1k0/casperjs/blob/gh-pages/CNAME — in their example, the operation is supposed to *create redirects from www.example.com and charlie.github.com to example.com*…

While the website now points to http://casperjs.org/, there&#39;s no 301 redirect from http://n1k0.github.com/casperjs/ (the old site url) to the new domain name.

Any idea how to setup such a redirect, if it&#39;s even possible? Is it a bug? If it is, where should I open an issue?

Hosting two domains using only one VPS?
