I love R and am willing to contribute, share code and all. Proposing feature requests to the R Core Team

Here&#39;s what I really want: a site collecting re-usable components for Android.

I have found various [small][1] [lists][2], the biggest being the [Open Intents](http://www.openintents.org/en/libraries) library list. Mark Murphy (hi, Mark) also lists the library projects he publishes.

None of this is of the same order as, say [Cocoa Controls][3] or [Cocoa Objects][4].

Where do you go to grab re-usable libraries for Android?

A lot of open source libraries that aid in Android application development have sprung up with time. IMO looking at source code of good projects helps learn the system better, faster and not to mention reduces development time. How do I contribute to other&#39;s code in GitHub?

Since I first saw a `dist/` directory in many open source projects, usually on GitHub, I&#39;ve been wondering what it means.

With `dist`, `vendor`, `lib`, `src`, and many other folder names that we see quite often, I sometimes wonder how I should name my own folders.

Correct me if I&#39;m wrong!

* src: Contains the **sources**. Sometimes only the pure sources, sometimes with the minified version, depends on the project.
* vendor: Contains other dependencies, like other open source projects.
* lib: Good question, it&#39;s really close to `vendor` actually, depending on the project we can see one or another or both...
* dist: From what I saw, it contains the &quot;production&quot; files, the one we should use if we want to use the *library*.

Why is open source so confusing? Isn&#39;t it possible to do things clearer? At least per language because some languages use specific names.

I have been reading through the backlog of answered questions on SO regarding &quot;How to promote an open source project&quot;. I want to publish one of my applications as open-source and want to digitally sign the binaries I&#39;ve created with my own certificate. (Of course, anyone else can just download the code and build it themselves with their own certificate.) I want to do this so anyone can check that this build was made by me, not by someone else. I also want to create a secure website with a valid SSL certificate so visitors can create their own accounts in a secure way so they can contribute to this project.

I could create a self-signed certificate, but I don&#39;t really like that option. Or I could pay Verisign a few gold pieces to get the certificates that would be valid for just a few years. I don&#39;t like that option either, since my treasury is valuable to me.

So, are there any other options? For example, a provider that supports open-source projects by offering certificates for a reduced price? It doesn&#39;t have to be free, just a lot less expensive than Verisign...

(The Project is created in C# with [Visual&amp;nbsp;Studio&amp;nbsp;2008][1]. Plus an additional project in ASP.NET that wants SSL.)

Code signing certificate for open-source projects?

I am having trouble understanding the usage permissions of open source. I read somewhere that GPL or LGPL enforces that software that uses GPL software must also be released open-source. I want to create an application that uses some open-source image recognition library. Can I sell this application or does it have to be open source?

GPL and LGPL open source licensing restrictions

(EDIT: This question is now outdated for my particular issue, as Google Code supports git now and I&#39;ve converted Protocol Buffers to Mercurial anyway. However, it&#39;s still of general interest, IMO.)

My [C# Protocol Buffers Port][1] uses github for its source control, and I&#39;m beginning to really enjoy using git. However, as far as I can tell, github doesn&#39;t provide any project management tools: defect and feature tracking, discussions, feature requests, docs etc. Given my affiliations, [Google Code][4] would be a natural choice, but it would seem odd to create a project there but host the source on github.

[This question about Fogbugz/Assembla][2] seems to mostly focus on the defect tracking. I was wondering what experiences others have had when it comes to a more &quot;complete&quot; project management solution. Does Fogbugz actually do everything I need? (Using a wiki for docs has its advantages, although I also want to be able to distribute documentation with the code.) Beyond the explicit features mentioned in the first paragraph, are there other project aspects I *should* be considering which I may have missed?

This will definitely stay an open source project, and although I&#39;d rather not pay I don&#39;t mind if a small fee is required. Currently I&#39;m the only developer, but that may change and there may very well be lots of people filing bugs and feature requests. (In other words, I  hope and expect it to be popular, but with me doing most of the work.)

Previously I&#39;ve *contributed* to various open source projects, but haven&#39;t done much in the way of running a very visible and active one. ([MiscUtil][3] is currently still &quot;hosted&quot; on my website, with occasional releases - the actual source control is on my local NAS.)

Anyone care to share their experiences?

EDIT: Another option I&#39;m now considering is a Google Code project (I really would like to be loyal to my employer) and an occasional merge from git to svn (at the very least, every time I do a release). This would allow non-git users to get hold of the source easily too.

I&#39;m looking for an open source implementation, preferably in python, of **Textual Sentiment Analysis** ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentiment_analysis][1]). Is anyone familiar with such open source implementation I can use?

I&#39;m writing an application that searches twitter for some search term, say &quot;youtube&quot;, and counts &quot;happy&quot; tweets vs. &quot;sad&quot; tweets. 
I&#39;m using Google&#39;s appengine, so it&#39;s in python. I&#39;d like to be able to classify the returned search results from twitter and I&#39;d like to do that in python.
I haven&#39;t been able to find such sentiment analyzer so far, specifically not in python. 
Are you familiar with such open source implementation I can use? Preferably this is already in python, but if not, hopefully I can translate it to python.

Note, the texts I&#39;m analyzing are VERY short, they are tweets. So ideally, this classifier is optimized for such short texts.

I know that Python, Ruby, Perl are all open source, but is Java really an open source programming language?

I have been searching on Google too, but I didn&#39;t find a proper answer.

Is there a “free” alternative to .NET Reflector?

As I understand it, the best practice for generating salts is to use some cryptic formula (or even magic constant) stored in your source code.

I&#39;m working on a project that we plan on releasing as open source, but the problem is that with the source comes the secret formula for generating salts, and therefore the ability to run rainbow table attacks on our site.

I figure that lots of people have contemplated this problem before me, and I&#39;m wondering what the best practice is. It seems to me that there is no point having a salt at all if the code is open source, because salts can be easily reverse-engineered.

What&#39;s the  best open source game to learn from?

If we&#39;ve learned anything from HTML/CSS it&#39;s that, declarative languages (like XML) do a good job of describing User Interfaces because:

1. It&#39;s easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively.
2. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it&#39;s easy to parse.
3. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists.
4. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand.
5. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves.
6. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers.

I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML.

The current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn&#39;t be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc).

What are some Open Source GUI&#39;s that represent these characteristics:

 - standardized
 - platform independent
 - declarative markup language
 - language agnostic

WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction.

What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

I have a fairly good understanding of individual OSS licenses, but I always have trouble when I want to use code under different licenses. BSD vs. Ms-PL, Apache 2 vs. GPLv3 etc.

Is there some sort of &quot;mating chart&quot; that lists which licenses are compatible with which ones?

Is there a chart of which OSS License is compatible with which?

I&#39;m starting a small open source project, myself being the sole contributor for the time. Still, I think a [continuous integration][1] setup would be useful to detect whether I broke the build.

Is there a free, hosted continuous integration server that is suitable for **very small projects**? Googling turned up [CodeBetter][2], but I&#39;m not sure they&#39;ll accept a one-man project that is just starting up.

I prefer [TeamCity][3], but I&#39;m open to suggestions.

Note - a **hosted** solution is a must for me. I don&#39;t want to setup and maintain a continuous integration server, so answers like &quot;TeamCity&quot; or &quot;CruiseControl&quot; are simply irrelevant.

Specific requirements:

 - I am hosting my project at [GitHub][4], so the continuous integration server needs [Git][5] integration
 - I would like the continuous integration server to run .NET integration (unit) tests
 - Nice to have - I also need access to a [MySQL][6] server (although I could modify the tests to use embedded [SQLite][7], they currently run against an external MySQL server).

Continuous Integration for a small .NET open source project

What are some open source programs that use Haskell and can be considered to be _good quality modern Haskell_? The larger the code base, the better.

I want to learn from their source code. I feel I&#39;m past the point of learning from small code examples, which are often to esoteric and small-world. I want to see how code is structured, how monads interact when you have a lot of things going on (logging, I/O, configuration, etc.).

I have been tasked with investigating the feasibility of writing an iPhone App to access our internal VoIP/SIP systems.

I&#39;ve never coded anything close to VoIP before. Are there any open source VoIP/SIP libraries or examples in C or Objective-C?

What are the best free software products that improve productivity?

Please list GUI programming libraries, toolkits, frameworks which allow to write GUI apps *quickly*. I mean in such a way, that

 * GUI is described entirely in a human-readable (and human-writable) plain text file (code)
 * code is terse (1 or 2 lines of code per widget/event pair), suitable for scripting
 * structure and operation of the GUI is evident from the code (nesting of widgets and flow of events)
 * details about *how* to build the GUI are hidden (things like mainloop, attaching event listeners, etc.)
 * auto-layouts are supported (vboxes, hboxes, etc.)

As answers suggest, this may be defined as *declarative* GUI programming, but it is not necessarily such. Any approach is OK if it works, is easy to use and terse.

There are some GUI libraries/toolkits like this. They are listed below. Please extend the list if you see a qualifying toolkit missing. Indicate if the project is crossplatform, mature, active, and give an example if possible.

I would like to fix some styling &amp; have an idea for the feature (and a lot of free time) but I cannot find any github.com page on github.com.

Something not snippets but full projects that are good representatives of F# features (i.e. pattern matching, discriminated unions, etc).
