`DATE_FORMAT()` is used to format date, but not the other way around.

No other mention of “era”.

So what is the difference between these two codes, `u` versus `y`, `year` versus `year-of-era`?

When should I use something like this pattern `uuuu-MM-dd` and when `yyyy-MM-dd` when working with dates in Java?

Seems that example code written by those in the know use `uuuu`, but why? 

Other formatting classes such as the legacy [`SimpleDateFormat`][2] have only `yyyy`, so I am confused why java.time brings this `uuuu` for “year of era”.

**Goal:** Find the `local time` and `UTC time offset` then construct the URL in following format.

Example URL: `/Actions/Sleep?duration=2002-10-10T12:00:00−05:00`

The format is based on the [W3C recommendation][1]. The documentation says:

So based on my understanding, I need to find my local time by `new Date()` then use `getTimezoneOffset()` function to compute the difference then attach it to the end of string.

1. Get local time with `format`

    ```
    var local = new Date().format(&quot;yyyy-MM-ddThh:mm:ss&quot;); // 2013-07-02T09:00:00
    ```

2. Get UTC time offset by hour

    ```
    var offset = local.getTimezoneOffset() / 60; // 7
    ```

3. Construct URL (time part only)

    ```
    var duration = local + &quot;-&quot; + offset + &quot;:00&quot;; // 2013-07-02T09:00:00-7:00
    ```

The above output means my local time is 2013/07/02 9am and difference from UTC is 7 hours (UTC is 7 hours ahead of local time)

So far it seems to work but what if `getTimezoneOffset()` returns negative value like -120?

I&#39;m wondering how the format should look like in such case because I cannot figure out from W3C documentation.

But that date clearly *is* in a standard unambiguous format. Why the error message?

Worse, an ambiguous date is apparently accepted without warning or error and then read incorrectly!

In other words, is there a better solution than needing to specify the format?

Date formatting in WPF datagrid

Oracle&#39;s default date format is YYYY-MM-DD.  Which means if I do:

     select some_date from some_table

...I *lose* the time portion of my date.

Yes, I know you can &quot;fix&quot; this with:

     alter session set nls_date_format=&#39;yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss&#39;;

But seriously, *why* isn&#39;t the above the default?  Especially in a DBMS where the two primary time-tracking data types (DATE and TIMESTAMP) *both* have a time component that includes (at least) accuracy down to 1 second.

Oracle&#39;s default date format is YYYY-MM-DD, WHY?

The default output format of `to_csv()` is:

    12/14/2012  12:00:00 AM

I cannot figure out how to output only the date part with specific format:

    20121214

or date and time in two separate columns in the csv file:

    20121214,  084530

The documentation is too brief to give me any clue as to how to do these. Can anyone help?

If `#{myBean.birthdate}` is of `java.util.Calendar` or `java.util.Date` type, can I possibly format this inside the EL itself using an existing function perhaps, with the output of like the one produced by the `DateFormat`&#39;s `SHORT`, `MEDIUM`,`LONG` abd `FULL` output type? 

Instead of outputting the complete form for the `#{myBean.birthdate}`: **Wed Jan 19 19:01:42 WIT 2011**, I just prefer a simple output of **Jan 19, 2011**.

Should I use `#{formatBean.format(myBean.birthdate)}` instead?
