I have `Service` fetch date string from web and then I want to pare it to `Date` object. But somehow application crashes.

I want current time in millis and then to store it in 12 hour format but with this piece of code I am getting 24 hour format time.

SimpleDateFormat returns 24-hour date: how to get 12-hour date?

I&#39;m reading in date strings that could be with or without a time zone adjustment: `yyyyMMddHHmmssz` or `yyyyMMddHHmmss`.  When a string is missing a zone, I&#39;ll treat it as GMT.  I&#39;m not seeing any way to create optional sections in a `SimpleDateFormat`, but maybe I&#39;m missing something.  Is there a way to do this with a `SimpleDateFormat`, or should I just write a new concrete `DateFormat` to handle this?

Optional parts in SimpleDateFormat

I have code and a test-case in a **legacy** application, which can be summarized as follows:

This test passes in Java 8 and below. However with Java 10 upwards this leads to a `java.text.ParseException: Unparseable date: &quot;Mo Aug 18 11:25:26 MESZ +0200 2014&quot;`. 

*For the record*: 
Besides `de_DE`, the exception is also thrown for the locales 
`de_CH`, `de_AT`, `de_LU`.

I am aware of the fact, that Date formatting was [changed with JDK 9][1] ([JEP 252](http://openjdk.java.net/jeps/252)). However, I consider this to be a disruptive change breaking backwards compatibility. Excerpted:

&gt;In JDK 9, the Unicode Consortium&#39;s Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) data is enabled as the default locale data, so that you can use standard locale data without any further action.
&gt;
&gt;In JDK 8, although CLDR locale data is bundled with the JRE, it isn’t enabled by default.
&gt;
&gt;Code that uses locale-sensitive services such as date, time, and number formatting may produce different results with the CLDR locale data. 

Adding a `.` for the day of the week (`Mo.`) compensates for this and test would pass. However, this is not a real solution for old data (in serialized form such as XML).

Checking this [stackoverflow post][2], it seems that the behaviour is intentional for the German locale and can be mitigated by specifying `java.locale.providers` with `COMPAT` mode. However, I do not like the idea to rely on some system property value for two reasons as it might:

1. change in the next releases of the JDK.
2. be forgotten in different environments.

**My question is:**

- How can I maintain backwards compatibility of legacy code with this particular date pattern, without re-writing / modifying existing serialized data or adding / changing system properties (like `java.locale.providers`), which may be forgotten in different environments (application servers, standalone jars, ...) ?

I have a date string and I want to parse it to normal date use the java Date API,the following is my code:

How to convert an Instant to a date format?

I have the following date:  `2011-08-12T20:17:46.384Z`.  What format is this?  I&#39;m trying to parse it with Java 1.4 via `DateFormat.getDateInstance().parse(dateStr)` and I&#39;m getting

What is this date format? 2011-08-12T20:17:46.384Z

I have this date object:

    SimpleDateFormat df = new SimpleDateFormat(&quot;yyyy-mm-dd HH:mm&quot;);

value of d1 is `Fri Jan 07 17:40:00 PKT 2011`

Now I am trying to add 10 minutes to the date above.

    Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance();
    cal.setTime(d1);
    cal.add(Calendar.MINUTE, 10);
    String newTime = df.format(cal.getTime());

Value of `newTime` changes to `2011-50-07 17:50`
but it should be `07-01-2011 17:50`.

It adds minutes correctly but it also changes month, don&#39;t know why!

    yyyy-MM-dd&#39;T&#39;HH:mm:ssz

I can explicitly set the *TimeZone* to use on the `SimpleDateFormat` to get the expected output, but I don&#39;t think that should be necessary. Is there something I am missing? Is there an alternative date parser?

The javadoc for SimpleDateFormat states that SimpleDateFormat is not synchronized.

But what is the best approach to using an instance of SimpleDateFormat in a multi threaded environment. Here are a few options I have thought of, I have used options 1 and 2 in the past but I am curious to know if there are any better alternatives or which of these options would offer the best performance and concurrency.

Option 1: Create local instances when required

    public String formatDate(Date d) {
        SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat(&quot;yyyy-MM-dd&quot;);

Option 2: Create an instance of SimpleDateFormat as a class variable but synchronize access to it.

I wonder why &#39;Y&#39; returns 2012 while &#39;y&#39; returns 2011 in `SimpleDateFormat`:

I am trying to create a format string where the letter &#39;T&#39; is included before the time for example:

I am currently using `yyyy-MM-ddhh:mm:ssZ` as the pattern string.

If I change it to `yyyy-MM-ddThh:mm:ssZ` it will throw an exception as &#39;A&#39; to &#39;Z&#39; and &#39;a&#39; to &#39;z&#39; are reserved.

Now i use this simple  date formatter to format it:

yet this gives an output similar to 2012-10-01T09:45:00.000UTC+00:00.

I figured substringing the T away would be a bit messy and creates overhead for no reason, thus what would be the proper way to format these dates?

I&#39;ve got GregorianCalendar instances and need to use SimpleDateFormat (or maybe something that can be used with calendar but that provides required #fromat() feature) to get needed output. Please, suggest work arounds as good as permanent solutions.

I have this code snippet:

I am trying to parse some dates that are coming out of a document. It would appear users have entered these dates in a similar but not exact format.

What is the best  way to go about trying to parse all of these? These seem to be the most common, but I guess what is hanging me up is that if i have a pattern of &quot;M/yyyy&quot; wont that always catch before &quot;MM/yyyy&quot;  Do I have to set up my try/catch blocks nested in a least restrictive to most restrictive way? it seems like it sure is going to take a lot of code duplication to get this right.

I have converted the String Date by Date Object and get the value:

&gt; Sun Feb 17 07:00:00 GMT 2013

Now I want to extract day (Sunday/Monday) and month from here.

Note that `format()` formats the `Date` correctly to GMT, but `parse()` lost the GMT details. I know I can use `substring()` and work around this, but what is the reason underlying this phenomenon?
