I&#39;m trying to follow the Redis installation process that was discuss in this [article][1] of digital ocean, for in WSL(Windows Sub-System for Linux). The Ubuntu version installed is Ubuntu 18.04.

Everything in redis installation is fine but when I tried to run this `sudo systemctl start redis` I got this message.

    System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can&#39;t operate.

Any Idea on what should I do with that?

I have enabled developer mode and installed `Bash on Ubuntu on Windows`.

My home directory can be found under `%localappdata%\Lxss\home\&lt;ubuntu.username&gt;\`, i have created a sub-directory called Pictures such that the full path should be

on windows: `C:\Users\&lt;windows.username&gt;\AppData\Local\lxss\home\&lt;ubuntu.username&gt;\Pictures`

on bash: `/home/&lt;ubuntu.username&gt;/Pictures`

if i create a file from bash using the command `touch hello.txt` i can freely see this file in the windows UI and copy it to my Desktop. However, if i create a new text file from the windows UI and save it in `C:\Users\&lt;windows.username&gt;\AppData\Local\lxss\home\&lt;ubuntu.username&gt;\Pictures`, even if i restart bash or windows, the file is not visible when i do `ls -l`.

Why can&#39;t bash see files created from the Windows side in it&#39;s own home directory?

**EDIT** Using `/mnt/c` is not a solution, i am trying to understand **why** it doesn&#39;t see those files and if there is a remedy to that so that it will be able to see UI created files, rather than trying to use the terminal to copy-paste or move files over.

I am trying to use **bash** on **Windows 10**, but I&#39;m getting this message when tried to run bash:

When I go to that url which opens the **Windows Store** app, there no sign of any **Linux** distribution there.

My windows version is(as in my right bottom corner of the screen):

I follow the instructions in this guide [Installation Guide][1] and also was watching this video [Editing code and files on Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10][2] from Scott Hanselman, but they didn&#39;t get the message of no installed distribution.

Any Help?

Occasionally WSL hangs on Windows 10. Opening &quot;Ubuntu&quot; bash just hangs. Any way to restart WSL without rebooting Windows ?

WSL Ubuntu hangs, how to restart?

In Windows 10, how do you install multiple, separate instances of Ubuntu in WSL? I&#39;d like separate instances for different work spaces. For instance one for Python development, one for Ruby development, one for .Net Core development, etc.  I know I could jam all of these into the same Ubuntu on WSL instance, but I&#39;d rather have a separate one for each of these scenarios.  Is this possible?

I&#39;ve just upgraded the Windows 10 in my laptop to Redstone 1. So I had a test of the Linux subsystem (aka. WSL, LXSS or Bash on Windows). Basically, everything is fine, but there is a problem that the RootFS of WSL is located in the `%LocalAppData%` path (e.g. `C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local`), which is also the place where my Windows OS located. It consumes a lot of the SSD hard drive space in my laptop and I hope I can move it to my external hard drive. 

There is an another problem. Since the other hard drive partitions are mounted as DriveFS, it does not support some Linux filesystem features like `chmod`, and some of my Linux project build scripts only works in VoIFS, which only located in `/` and `/home`.

So I tried to move the whole WSL RootFS to another hard drive. Firstly I&#39;ve tried to make a NTFS Junction (hard link) for `C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local\lxss`. I&#39;ve uninstalled the WSL completely and run `mklink` for the RootFS to another hard drive, and when I reinstall the WSL again, **it couldn&#39;t create the new user, and it reports error with code 0x80070003.**

Then I searched around, and I got this: [moving Linux filesystem - issue #449][1]. **It seems that moving and making hard link for WSL RootFS only works before Windows 10 Build 14388, it does not work in the Windows 10 Build 14393 RTM.** The only way is moving the whole `%LocalAppData%` to the external hard drive, but I cannot do that since I&#39;m a laptop user and I can&#39;t bring an external hard drive everywhere!

So I would like to ask that, is there any other ways to move WSL out of my system partition? If I can&#39;t do that, **can I create an extra VoIFS work directory in some other places and compile my stuff?**

Move WSL (Bash on Windows) root filesystem to another hard drive?

So it seems on ubuntu for windows (windows subsystem for linux) people are suggesting we need to use Agg backend and just save images, not show plots.

How could we get it to where plt.show() would actually show us an image?  My current option is to override plot.show() to instead just savefig a plot-148123456.png  under /mnt/c/Users/james/plots/ in windows and just have an explorer window open viewing the images.

I suppose I could host that folder and use a browser.

My goal is to be able to run simple examples like the code above without changing the code to ftp the images somewhere etc.  I just want the plot to show up in a window.  

Has anyone figured out a decent way to do it?  

Show matplotlib plots (and other GUI) in Ubuntu (WSL1 &amp; WSL2)

I&#39;m developing a rails app using WSL2/Ubuntu on my Windows 10 machine, which is great! **The problem is I can&#39;t connect to my server from another computer in the same network**.

For further clarity, I am running a Puma server on localhost:3000

I have tried the following:

1. Directly connecting to the IP address assigned to Ethernet adapter vEthernet (WSL) -&gt; 172.26.208.1:3000
2. Directly connecting to the host machine&#39;s IPv4 address -&gt; 192.168.0.115
3. Adding a firewall exception (using Bitdefender)
4. Binding the IPs above `rails s -b 172.26.208.1 -p 3000`

None of the above have worked thus far... What I&#39;d like to do is:

* Test the website on another laptop/tablet/phone
* Use VScode from another computer

Is there anything I&#39;m missing to at least see the website correctly? (and any comments on the VScode part would be appreciated)

Connecting to WSL2 server via local network

Recently I installed **WSL Ubuntu 18.04** on my Windows machine, but nothing seems to work properly, because I have **no internet access**.&lt;br&gt;
I tried a few commands and `sudo apt update` says &#39;Connection failed&#39; and `ping google.com` literally takes forever as you can see in this screenshot:

I also checked `nano /etc/resolv.conf` and made sure that the nameservers are right, completely disabled Kaspersky and its firewall, disabled Hyper-V, reinstalled WSL a few times and even disabled Windows Defender. Nothing helped.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
So do you have any ideas what the issue could be here?

No internet connection on WSL Ubuntu (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

While other questions deal with [how to use things like git-bash][1], giving the new WSL a spin as the terminal for VS Code is not the same: it gives you access to bash running on an actual Ubuntu Linux subsystem, instead of the git-bash terminal running on the Windows subsystem.

So how do we get it working as the VS Code terminal, and particularly how do we get it working as a functional dev environment terminal?

Unlike git-bash, this is unfortunately not as simple, because the Ubuntu Linux configuration in WSL can provide some gotchas, such as NPM trying (and failing) to run from your Windows Program Files directory due to the interaction between WSL and Windows itself in terms of pathing, and some packages such as Compass failing for what are not necessarily immediately obvious reasons to someone who is not used to developing on Linux. What&#39;s a simple way to have a reliable WSL terminal environment for VS Code where most frequently used tools will run when installed via `apt-get` or `npm`?

How do I use Bash on Ubuntu on Windows (WSL) for my VS Code terminal?

I&#39;ve tried following these instructions: https://stackoverflow.com/a/40312117/21728 which basically do this:

    sudo apt-get install libsecret-1-0 libsecret-1-dev
    cd /usr/share/doc/git/contrib/credential/libsecret
    sudo make
    git config --global credential.helper /usr/share/doc/git/contrib/credential/libsecret/git-credential-libsecret

But when I do any network operation, I get this error:

    ** (process:7902): CRITICAL **: could not connect to Secret Service: Cannot autolaunch D-Bus without X11 $DISPLAY

That&#39;s logical I guess as there is indeed no X11 display.

When I run git blame on a file (using msysgit) I always get the following sort of printout:

i.e. it shows all lines as Not Yet Committed.

I tried this on many files, that have many commits - always the same results. I also tried using relative/full path, but it seems to make no difference.

When I try to use TortoiseGit&#39;s blame it always shows every line as being last committed at the first commit:

even thought, as I&#39;ve said, there are actually tens of commits in the history of these files..

Ideas?

* Git blame works fine on GitHub, where this repo is hosted.
* It also works fine if I clone it to a linux machine and do the blame there
* It seems that only on msysgit this doesn&#39;t work

Ubuntu WSL with docker could not be found

When trying to use the Linux version of Oracle&#39;s JDK on the latest Windows 10 build having support for bash, I am running into a problem with the prompt hanging whenever attempting to invoke the `java` binary.

Typing even something as simple as `java -version` hangs and I have to terminate the process to resume control.

Anyone got this working yet?

On my work are not allowed to install apps from the Microsoft Store. Yes, this is a bank, that not supported Windows 10 (it&#39;s hell).

Is it possible to install Ubuntu in WSL without downloading it from the app store?

Or is it possible to download Ubuntu app without Microsoft Store and then install it?

Running bash on windows 10, the simple syntax below works when I SSH to my webserver, but not when I exit out and am on my local machine. It doesn&#39;t give me an error, but I can see permissions are unchanged. I have to checked that I am set up as an administrator on my computer. Is this an error or is this just a consequence of the local operating system being windows? IF the later, it makes me question the value of using bash on windows if common operations such as this won&#39;t work. 

    $chmod 644 filename

But the Ubuntu shell start in `/home/techsupp` folder by default. Is it possible to force it to start in same folder than the one I use my `Ubuntu` command?

So in my example I should be in

Start WSL Ubuntu in specific or current folder on Windows

I&#39;ve generated a Dockerfile with Visual&amp;nbsp;Studio. It runs in Visual&amp;nbsp;Studio just fine and now I&#39;m trying to build it from Windows itself (`docker build .`, and I tried many combinations). Yet I get the following error:

When I change copy to `./client.csproj` it does continue and then I get:

Docker - failed to compute cache key: not found - runs fine in Visual Studio

After upgrading from WSL to WSL2 

    sudo apt-get update

not works any longer. After: 

`wsl --set-version Ubuntu-18.04 2`

I am using windows 10 developer preview Build 14295. From the Build conference I understood that we can enable bash in windows 10. But its not clear how to enable bash in windows 10.

How to enable Bash in Windows 10 developer preview?

I have bash installed on my W10 laptop, but one thing that is very frustrating is I can not scroll up. 

Does anyone know of a way to enable scrolling with the mouse wheel? I could not find anything after many google searches.

Context: If I compile some C++ files and get a lot of errors, I can not scroll up to see all those errors.

Recently updated to Windows 10, installed Ubuntu Bash. Wanted to start configuring, But I have hit a wall already. 

When installed, you are asked for a username and password for your account. 
This creates a user level.

Is it possible to access to root user, SU?

Every time I try, it asks for a password, and none of the accounts on the PC work (i.e., Windows 10 admin account password does not work). Tried default passwords too etc., all fail. 

The reason for it is when looking at the users home directory: When creating a file, it creates it under my Windows User Account (Permissions).

But when I view files created from Bash, they are created for Root user.

So this is the confusion, I modified `bashrc` and it&#39;s no longer owned by root, So it&#39;s not accessible. 

But I cannot login to root to create or modify the files. 

Am I being a complete noob or something?

When `bashrc` is not owned by Root, when loading `Bash.exe`, I get `.bashrc Input/output error`.

Along with *Windows 10 Anniversary update* for summer 2016, came the possibility to run *ubuntu* binaries inside the new [Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)](https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/wsl/2016/04/22/windows-subsystem-for-linux-overview/), a &quot;lightweight&quot; virtualized subsystem.

Unfortunately, launching `C:\Windows\System32\bash.exe`, another `bash` ELF binary starts a process inside the WSL, from where you cannot escape!  You may launch only other ELF binaries.

So how can I execute `*.exe` files from Windows Bash?[1]

I am able to install docker, docker-compose and docker-machine

However when I try to run

    root@DESKTOP-51NFMIM:~# docker ps
    Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?

But all it&#39;s doing is opening some sort of CMD.

I did notice that the GUID was the same thing as the regular CMD, so I changed that. Then it did launch an *external* shell.
