How do I write a script to install MySQL server on Ubuntu?

`sudo apt-get install mysql` will install, but it will also ask for a password to be entered in the console.

How do I do this in a non-interactive way? That is, write a script that can provide the password?

I&#39;m thinking to install *hylafax+* version 5.5.4 which was release last month on my [Debian][1] PC.

How to check the version before installing a package using apt-get?

I&#39;m trying to install an [Apache][1] server on my AWS instance. However, it seems that it doesn&#39;t have the apt package installed.

I googled and all I found was some broken links to this package. I am using [PuTTY][2] on a Windows machine if that information helps.

I currently have low to none experience in Linux environments.

Amazon Linux: &quot;apt-get: command not found&quot;

I am trying to install `apt-utils` on Docker because when I was just doing `apt-get update`, I was getting the error: `debconf: delaying package configuration, since apt-utils is not installed`. So I added a line to install `apt-utils` (along with `curl`):

Docker: Having issues installing apt-utils

I&#39;m trying to create required libraries in a package I&#39;m distributing. It requires both the [SciPy][1] and [NumPy][2] libraries.
While developing, I installed both using

    apt-get install scipy

which installed SciPy 0.9.0 and NumPy 1.5.1, and it worked fine.

I would like to do the same using `pip install` - in order to be able to specify dependencies in a setup.py of my own package.

The problem is, when I try:

    pip install &#39;numpy==1.5.1&#39;

it works fine.

But then

    pip install &#39;scipy==0.9.0&#39;

fails miserably, with

    raise self.notfounderror(self.notfounderror.__doc__)

    numpy.distutils.system_info.BlasNotFoundError:

    Blas (http://www.netlib.org/blas/) libraries not found.

    Directories to search for the libraries can be specified in the

    numpy/distutils/site.cfg file (section [blas]) or by setting

    the BLAS environment variable.

How do I get it to work?

Can I get this list in a form suitable for setting up

How can I get a list of repositories &#39;apt-get&#39; is checking?

When I `apt-get update` and `apt-get upgrade` my Ubuntu system, I get the following error message regarding fetching Google Chrome updates.  This only started happening a few days ago.

I read here https://superuser.com/questions/1331936/how-can-i-get-past-a-repository-is-not-signed-message-when-attempting-to-upgr that you can pass this error using --allow-unauthenitcated or --allow-insecure-repositories but both seem to me workarounds that may compromize security of the container.

When I try to install npm with `sudo apt-get install npm`, I got following error:

I am running a virtual machine (Ubuntu 13.10) with docker (version 0.8.1, build a1598d1).  I am trying to build an image with a dockerfile.  First, I want to update the packages (using the code below - the proxy is obfuscated) but `apt-get` times out with the error: `Could not resolve &#39;archive.ubuntu.com&#39;`.

    ENV HTTP_PROXY &lt;HTTP_PROXY&gt;
    ENV HTTPS_PROXY &lt;HTTPS_PROXY&gt;

I have also run the following in the host system:

The host is able to run `apt-get` without issue.

How can I change the dockerfile to allow it to reach the ubuntu servers from within the container?

I ran the code in CentOS (changing the `FROM ubuntu:13.10` to `FROM centos`) and it worked fine.  It seems to be a problem with Ubuntu.

How do you run `apt-get` in a dockerfile behind a proxy?

I am on R version 2.13 and would like to update to a newer version in order to use some packages that depend on R&gt;= 2.14. 

I have the line to my sources.list file as found described [here][1].  I then navigate to the terminal and type:

    sudo apt-get update

and get the following error when trying to update R on the CRAN mirror closest to me:

Installing R from CRAN Ubuntu repository: No Public Key Error

Trying to update some repositories on Debian Etch installation and getting the following errors from running &quot;apt-get update&quot;

The irony of it instructing me to run apt-get update is a nice kicker...

How to trust a apt repository : Debian apt-get update error public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY &lt;id&gt;

I&#39;m automating my Docker installation. Something like this:

This worked fine in older versions of `apt-key`, but recent versions have two issues:

1. A different output format: I can hack around that
2. A warning:

        Warning: apt-key output should not be parsed (stdout is not a terminal)

Clearly, I can hack around this as well, just redirect `stderr` to `/dev/null`. It just made me curious:

**How do these fine folks suggest I verify my key fingerprints?** Or am I getting this fundamentally wrong by wanting to automate it, does that defeat the point? (I think not, since I still manually lifted the expected fingerprint from the website, but feel free to tell me otherwise...)

There was an error when I tried to remove a package, so it was left in a broken state. I tried the following:

    sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq rvm

Output:

Removing broken packages in Ubuntu

The other day I decided that I wanted the command python to default to firing up python3 instead of python2.

So I did this:

    $ sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python python /usr/bin/python2.7 2

    $ sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python python /usr/bin/python3.5 3

    $ sudo update-alternatives --config python

    $ sudo update-alternatives --config python
    There are 2 choices for the alternative python (providing /usr/bin/python).

But it wasn&#39;t long before I realised I had broken apt/aptitude when it comes to installing and removing python packages because apt was expecting python2 it transpired.

So I have had to leave it as defaulting to python 2 but I develop in python 3 and so would like my system to default to python 3 for when I run python and idle.

Can anyone tell me how I can achieve this without breaking apt?

I am dealing with a legacy Dockerfile. Here is a _very simplified_ version of what I am dealing with:

    FROM ubuntu:14.04
    
    RUN apt-get -y update &amp;&amp; apt-get -y install \
        python-pip \
        python-numpy # ...and many other packages
    
    RUN pip install -U pip
    
    RUN pip install -r /tmp/requirements1.txt # includes e.g., numpy==1.13.0
    RUN pip install -r /tmp/requirements2.txt
    RUN pip install -r /tmp/requirements3.txt

First, several packages are installed using `apt`, and then several packages are installed using `pip`. `pip` version 10 has been released, and [part of the release](https://pip.pypa.io/en/stable/news/#deprecations-and-removals) is this new restriction:

&gt; Removed support for uninstalling projects which have been installed using distutils. distutils installed projects do not include metadata indicating what files belong to that install and thus it is impossible to actually uninstall them rather than just remove the metadata saying they&#39;ve been installed while leaving all of the actual files behind. 

This leads to the following problem in my setup. For example, first `apt` installs `python-numpy`. Later `pip` tries to install a newer version of `numpy` from e.g., `/tmp/requirements1.txt`, and tries to uninstall the older version, but because of the new restriction, it cannot remove this version:

    Installing collected packages: numpy
      Found existing installation: numpy 1.8.2
    Cannot uninstall &#39;numpy&#39;. It is a distutils installed project and thus we cannot accurately determine which files belong to it which would lead to only a partial uninstall.


Now I know at this point there are several solutions.

I could not install `python-numpy` through `apt`. However, this causes issues because `python-numpy` installs a few different packages as requirements, and I do not know if another part of the system relies on these packages. And in reality, there are several `apt` packages installed through the Dockerfile, and each one I remove seems to reveal another `Cannot uninstall X` error, and removes a number of other packages along with it, that our app may or may not rely on. 

I could also use the `--ignore-installed` option when I try to `pip` install things that have already been installed through `apt`, but then again I have the same problem of every `--ignore-installed` argument revealing yet another thing that needs to be ignored.

I could pin `pip` at an older version that does not have this restriction, but I don&#39;t want to be stuck using an outdated version of `pip` forever. 

I have been going around in circles trying to come up with a good solution that involves minimal changes to this legacy Dockerfile, and allows the app we deploy with that file to continue to function as it has been. Any suggestions as to how I can safely get around this problem of `pip` 10 not being able to install newer versions of `distutils` packages? Thank you!

I did not realize that `--ignore-installed` could be used without a package as an argument to ignore all installed packages. I am considering whether or not this might be a good option for me, and have asked about it [here][1].

I have the below Dockerfile for zookeeper and I am trying to create an image for it, but it is giving me an error. I have recently started working with Docker, and started playing with a Zookeeper setup, so I am not able to understand. What does this error mean?

Below is the error I got:

Am I doing anything wrong here? Why is `apk` not found?

I&#39;m using an image `nginx` which is based on `dockerfile/ubuntu`. On attaching to the docker container&#39;s shell

    docker exec -it &lt;container_id&gt; /bin/bash

I want to do a `git pull` so I tried installing `git` but `apt` is unable to find the package:

How can we install `git` from that image and why is it missing?
