How do I update file permissions with `git-bash` on Windows 7?

I&#39;ve tried the following without success:

    $ ls -al scripts/script.sh

    $ git update-index --chmod=+x scripts/script.sh

The first time I ran Genymotion virtual device, it had worked. But when I tried running it today, I got this error message

Unable to start Genymotion virtual device, incompatible CPU

I&#39;m using `PHPStorm` under `Win7 64bit` with `64bit Java (latest version I guess)` and working currently on an insanely big and chaotic project. There are many classes containing `10k LOC` and more. Therefore my `PHPStorm` runs out of memory once in a while.

I get this nice `Out-of-Memory` dialog suggesting increasing my memory settings. I currently have set in my `PhpStorm.exe.vmoptions`:

    -server
    -Xms128m
    -Xmx512m
    -XX:MaxPermSize=250m
    -XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=64m
    -ea
    -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false
    -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
    -XX:+UseCodeCacheFlushing
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
    -XX:SoftRefLRUPolicyMSPerMB=50

The problem is: When I increase my memory to be used in this file I get the following error when starting the program:

&gt; Failed to create JVM: Error code -4

I Googled around but nobody seems to want the memory to be **more** than `512MB`.

**Does anybody know what I can do to use PHPStorm without any hassle again?**

Sure, I can reset the cache but this is not a permanent solution, right?

I read somewhere that adding this line to my `vmoptions` is a good idea, but I don&#39;t see any difference:

    -server
    ....
    -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=15



PHPStorm/Webstorm increase memory to more than 512MB

I changed from Win XP 32bit to Win7 64bit and reinstalled Python 2.7
and the Anaconda package. 

However, it seems like it isn&#39;t properly installed.
When I do 

    import enum 

There is the error:

    ImportError: No module named enum

However, when I try import pandas it works.

When typing help() and modules within Ipython nothing happens.

Any idea how to go from here?

I&#39;m trying to install the Android SDK on my Windows 7 x64 System.  

`jdk-6u23-windows-x64.exe` is installed, but the **Android SDK** setup refuses to proceed because it doesn&#39;t find the **JDK** installation.

Is this a known issue? And is there a solution?

I&#39;m currently using GitHub over HTTPS and have the latest version of Git installed (1.9.0) along with the Git credential helper on Windows 7.

On setting up my environment, I told git-credentials to permanently remember my username and password.

I&#39;ve recently updated my GitHub password via the website and I&#39;m now no longer able to push/pull/fetch, etc. 

How I would go about updating my password on git-credentials helper on Windows 7?

I have installed MongoDB on my Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. I have created the path data/db too but when I tried to start mongodb using the command `&#39;C:\mongodb\bin\mongod.exe&#39;`, it is not starting. It is showing `admin web console waiting for connections on port 28017`. 

Help me in starting the MongoDB. And also please suggest if any GUI is available for MongoDB.

How do I start Mongo DB from Windows?

When I start up an Experimental instance of VS from VS for debugging and stop debugging (sometimes directly from the parent VS), a zombile devenv.exe process remains running which I am unable to kill. It holds on to many of my dlls.

As I am logged onto this 64bit Win7 machine as Administrator, I would expect to be able to kill any process I wish to.

    I tried (from Administrator command prompt):
    
    End Task from Task Manager.
    TASKKILL /F /IM devenv.exe
    PSKILL devenv.exe

None return any error and `TASKKILL` and `PSKILL` returned success messages of terminating/killing the process. But devenv.exe still runs, it is not re-spawned as the `PID` remains constant. It goes away only on restart of the system which is not a great solution.

Note. LockHunter shows devenv has got a lock on itself. And it cannot unlock it.

Taskkill /f doesn&#39;t kill a process

I have version 2.7 installed from early 2012. I can&#39;t find any consensus on whether I should completely uninstall and wipe this version before putting on the latest version.

&quot;Soft&quot;-removing old versions? Hard-removing/wiping old versions? Installing over top?

I&#39;ve seen somewhere a special install/upgrade process using a &quot;segmenting&quot; method of Python installations, keeping different versions separate and apart, but functional. Not sure if this is the standard, de facto way.

I also wonder if Revo gets too overzealous and may cause issues with wiping out still-needed remnants, like environment/PATH variables.

How to update Python?

I&#39;m an ASP.NET / C# developer. I use VS2010 all the time. I am thinking of enabling BitLocker on my laptop to protect the contents, but I am concerned about performance degradation. Developers who use IDEs like Visual Studio are working on lots and lots of files at once. More than the usual office worker, I would think.

**So I was curious if there are other developers out there who develop with BitLocker enabled. How has the performance been? Is it noticeable? If so, is it bad?**

My laptop is a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM and an Intel X25-M G2 SSD. It&#39;s pretty snappy but I want it to stay that way. If I hear some bad stories about BitLocker, I&#39;ll keep doing what I am doing now, which is keeping stuff RAR&#39;ed with a password when I am not actively working on it, and then SDeleting it when I am done (but it&#39;s such a pain).

**2015 Update:** I&#39;ve been using Visual Studio 2015 on my Surface Pro 3 when I travel, which has BitLocker enabled by default. It feels pretty much like my desktop, which is an i7-2600k @ 4.6 GHz. I think on modern hardware with a good SSD, you won&#39;t notice!

**2021 Update:** I have been enabling bitlocker on all my computers and it flies now. No worries. Get an NVMe SSD and don&#39;t look back.

How does BitLocker affect performance?

I&#39;m trying to figure out the easiest way to edit text files in the console (PowerShell in my case).  I&#39;m using Windows 7 64 bit. It galls me that I can&#39;t just type `edit filename.txt` to edit a file.  That used to work, but that&#39;s all changed.  What are my options to view and edit text files within the windows console, and if you tell me to install and learn VIM I&#39;m going to punch you in the face.  :-)

So I am using Win7 x64 with VS2010 and have installed the IE10 Win7 Preview and ReSharper 6.1.  

When I attempt to Start Debugging, I receive the following:

&gt; machine &#39;MINE&#39; failed. A debugger is already attached.&quot;

I can click OK and look at attached debug sessions - [1111] is grayed out and there is another instance of iexplore.exe with my solution title.  I can attach manually and it works fine.  

I thought maybe since there were two iexplore.exe pids there would be something wrong, there are not two tabs or windows open and I disabled automatic crash recovery.

I would like to know how I can display the location of Program Files (x86) in Command Prompt. I&#39;m using Windows 7 64bit.

I&#39;ve tried: 

 `echo %programfiles(x86)%` and `echo %programfiles%`.

Both of these output `C:\Program Files`

When I manually checked the registry,  
*HKLM/Software/microsoft/windows/currentversion*,  
the `programfilesdir` points to `C:\Program Files` and 

*HKLM/Software/WOW64/Microsoft/windows/currentversion*,  
the `programfilesdir` points to `C:\Program Files (x86)`.

But, why am I always seeing `C:\Program Files` displayed?

Can we add multiple different terminals in the VS Code? I am planning to add following three terminal and work with all of those :

I just stopped an Application Pool in IIS. When trying to start it, IIS complains that, 

&gt; The service cannot accept control messages at this time. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80080425). 

**What gives? [Whence][1] did this error come?**

Looking at the Event Viewer &gt; System shows these warnings:

So, we started the W3SVC service, and then we could start our website.

I followed [this][1] tutorial for creating Signed SSL certificates on Windows for development purposes, and it worked great for one of my domains(I&#39;m using hosts file to simulate dns). Then I  figured that I have a lot of subdomains, and that would be a pain in the ass to create a certificate for each of them. So I tried creating a certificate using wildcard in `Common` field as suggested in some of the answers at serverfault. Like this:

    Common Name: *.myserver.net/CN=myserver.net

However, after importing this certificate into Trusted Root Certification Authority, I&#39;m getting `NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID` error in Chrome, for main domain and all of its subodmains, for example: `https://sub1.myserver.net` and `https://myserver.net`.

&gt; This server could not prove that it is myserver.net; its security certificate
    is from *.myserver.net/CN=myserver.net. 

&gt; This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.

Is there something wrong in Common Name field that is causing this error?

Creating self signed certificate for domain and subdomains - NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

I would like to install Visual Studio 2013 on Windows 7 64-bit.

For some reason, the installer says &quot;Setup Blocked&quot; with an error &quot;This version of Visual Studio requires a computer with a newer version of Windows&quot;.

This error is not exactly descriptive of what&#39;s wrong. The least I could do was verify that I have the following installed :

1.  Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) with Service Pack 1
2.  Internet Explorer 10
    - Version: 10.0.9200.16750
    - Update Versions: 10.0.12 (KB2898785)
3. All Windows Updates that were available for installing on 11th of Dec. 2013.

Executed the installer with the `/log winexp.log` argument and got the following : [winexp.log](http://pastebin.com/aDYGysb9).

Any ideas of what else could be the problem ?

I uninstalled my previous version of node.js (0.8.11) and downloaded the latest, 0.10.24 from the node.js website and installed it. However, after running `node --version`, it still indicates that I&#39;m running v0.8.11. Obviously, some stuff was left behind during the uninstall process, and it&#39;s causing me to have all sorts of errors when trying to add modules through npm. I&#39;ve seen solutions to this for OSX and Linux, but couldn&#39;t find anything for Windows. I&#39;m running Windows 7 64-bit.

How to completely remove node.js from Windows

I know this question was asked a lot before but I tried some of the solutions which were given and nothing worked..

I have downloaded **MySQL Workbench 6.1 on my windows 7 x64** and now as I want to start and do a simple DB I set a new MySQL Connection and let it as default the Hostname, port and the username I just set the name of the connection. In the beginning it was showing down in the action output that Could not connect.Server may not be run and in the msg part it was written `Can&#39;t connect to MySQL server on &#39;127.0.0.1&#39; (10061)` but I thought I would be able to do a DB and test it Then I created simple DB and when I wanted to execute it I couldn&#39;t press the Bolt which execute the DB so I tried from Query and I pressed the 2nd option which is &quot;Execute(All or Selection) to text&quot; as I couldn&#39;t choose any other option and this error was shown `Can&#39;t connect to MySQL server on &#39;127.0.0.1&#39; (10061) (2003)`

I am new in this I have used SQL*Plus for a while but it is not the same.

Error Message : Cannot find or open the PDB file

I have all my workspace and everything set up on Windows 7 but I also want to develop Windows Phone 8 but as stated on Microsoft website that It can not be installed on Windows 7.

Do anybody knows how to install in on Windows 7. I have found a crack but I don&#39;t know how to run this. You can get this from [here][1]

There could be several reasons to install WP 8 in Windows 7. Like I have purchased a Wndows 7 recently and I don&#39;t want to make shift to Windows 8 right now, because I don&#39;t feel comfortable with its UI. Its more for a tablet or touch screen PC. 

I have set-up all my workspace and other projects on Windows 7, I don&#39;t want to waste my time in setting up on Windows 8, I don&#39;t even know that how they gona perform on Windows 8. So there are so many genuine reasons.

How to Install Windows Phone 8 SDK on Windows 7

I&#39;m trying to install said library for use with Python. I tried downloading the executable installer for Windows, which runs, but says it doesn&#39;t find a Python installation. Then tried registering (http://effbot.org/zone/python-register.htm) Python, but the script says it can&#39;t register (although the keys appear in my register).

Then I tried downloading the source package: I run the setup.py build and it works, but when I run setup.py install it says the following:

    running install
    running build
    running build_py
    running build_ext
    building &#39;_imaging&#39; extension
    error: Unable to find vcvarsall.bat

What can I do?

**UPDATE (May 2014):** Like said by some comments and answers, PIL is currently unmantained, and the way to go now is to use Pillow (https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Pillow/, `pip install pillow`).

Installing PIL (Python Imaging Library) in Win7 64 bits, Python 2.6.4

I&#39;ve been using [Cygwin][1] (for a long time). Specifically, I use it (including gcc/g++) on Win7 for development work. I&#39;ve just recently noticed there now exists a [64-bit version][2]. 

I don&#39;t have a specific need which requires that I make the transition to 64-bit, but I was wondering whether to do it anyway. Is it advisable? What are the pros and cons? Are there known over-arcing issues when making the transition?
