I want to use Proguard mainly for obfuscation reasons.

My problem is that I have three libraries, Twitter4J and two signpost libraries. These libraries caused errors when I tried to create an signed APK.  To get over this I put the following in the `proguard.config` file...

    -dontwarn org.apache.commons.codec.binary.** 
    -dontwarn org.slf4j.** 
    -dontwarn com.sun.syndication.io.**
    -dontwarn com.sun.syndication.feed.synd.*   

While this got rid of the errors in the console, when i loaded my signed APK onto my mobile phone it instantly crashed.  The DDMS said this was due to a class not found in Twitter4J.   


Getting rid of the `&quot;dontwarns&quot;` above did not help.  Neither did adding `dontshrink  dontoptimise`.


I would  like Proguard to completely ignore the libraries (as they are open source anyway).  Is this possible?



How to make Proguard ignore external libraries?

I&#39;m trying to compile my app as assembleRelease in Android Studio 1.0.1 and get the following message:

    FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

    * What went wrong:
    Execution failed for task &#39;:app:proguardRelease&#39;.
    &gt; java.io.IOException: Please correct the above warnings first.

The app compiles and runs perfectly in debug mode, and assembleRelease worked with Android Studio 0.8.

The `proguard-rules.pro` file is empty. The `build.gradle` file and the full error are shown below.

proguardRelease FAILED when compiling apk with assembleRelease in Android Studio

I don&#39;t know how I can describe this issue. I searched a lot, but I didn&#39;t find any solution.

Edit: `./gradlew clean assembleDebug` works perfectly! and `./gradlew clean build assembleRelease` works if runProguard is set to off. So it&#39;s a 100% proGuard issue.



Gradle failed to build when proguard is activated

I have enabled Proguard, and i&#39;m trying to build the APK, and i&#39;m getting a lot of warnings and don&#39;t know how to solve them .

Getting Warnings With Proguard (With External Libraries)

In Android Studio, where are the ProGuard mapping files generated after compiling a signed APK?

I&#39;m not sure if it isn&#39;t working or if I just forgot the file path, and my compulsory Google/Stack Overflow search did not answer this

Where does Android Studio save the ProGuard mapping file?

I am developing a **payment processing app** for Android, and I want to prevent a hacker from accessing any resources, assets or source code from the [APK][1] file.

If someone changes the .apk extension to .zip then they can unzip it and easily access all the app&#39;s resources and assets, and using [dex2jar][2] and a Java decompiler, they can also access the source code. It&#39;s very easy to reverse engineer an Android APK file - for more details see Stack Overflow question *[Reverse engineering from an APK file to a project][3]*.

I have used the Proguard tool provided with the Android SDK. When I reverse engineer an APK file generated using a signed keystore and Proguard, I get obfuscated code. 

However, the names of Android components remain unchanged and some code, like key-values used in the app, remains unchanged. As per Proguard documentation the tool can&#39;t obfuscate components mentioned in the Manifest file.

Now my questions are:

 1. How can I **completely prevent** reverse engineering of an Android APK? Is this possible?
 2. How can I protect all the app&#39;s resources, assets and source code so that hackers can&#39;t hack the APK file in any way?
 3. **Is there a way to make hacking more tough or even impossible?** What more can I do to protect the source code in my APK file?

How to avoid reverse engineering of an APK file

I want to exclude some file paths from ProGuard. Example `com.myapp.customcomponents`

How can I do this?  I hate to be placing -keep flags for every single custom component file I have in this directory.

So, I&#39;m *TRYING* to release some software but Proguard is giving me a headache.

When I try to export using proguard I&#39;m getting lots of warning ie &quot;can&#39;t find referenced class&quot;

For example:

The warnings seem to related to simpleframework, so in my proguard config file I&#39;ve added the following:

    -libraryjars pathtoprojecttolibs\simple-xml-2.4.jar

Where `pathtoprojecttolibs` is the path to jars which are referenced by my project.

This makes NO difference.

If simpleframework references javax can I tell proguard to ignore this too??

And it is only from devices running Lollipop. I have tested it on my Nexus 5, but I can not reproduce the error. I am using proguard

So I am thinking it might have something to do with proguard and maybe the JavascriptInterface. Any ideas?

The new documentation on [ProGuard for Android][1] says to add a line to the default.properties file in the project home directory. However, on opening this file, I read at the top: 

    # This file is automatically generated by Android Tools. 
    # Do not modify this file -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE ERASED! 

Am I missing something?

Also, is there a way to enable ProGuard only for a production build from Eclipse (i.e., when exporting the finished product)?

How to use the ProGuard in Android Studio?

Most app developers will integrate some third party libraries into their apps. If it&#39;s to access a service, such as Dropbox or YouTube, or for logging crashes. The number of third party libraries and services is staggering. Most of those libraries and services are integrated by somehow authenticating with the service, most of the time, this happens through an API key. For security purposes, services usually generate a public and private, often also referred to as secret, key. Unfortunately, in order to connect to the services, this private key must be used to authenticate and hence, probably be part of the application. 
Needless to say, that this faces in immense security problem. Public and private API keys can be extracted from APKs in a matter of minutes and can easily be automated. 

Assuming I have something similar to this, how can I protect the secret key:

I have my class `ClassMultiPoint` with subclasses.

When I run my app with `proguard` my app crash.

I think problem is: `proguard` rename attribute `&#39;oPoints.message&#39;` of my class to short `&#39;a&#39;`.

Prevent class member name obfuscation by ProGuard

According to Google, I must &quot;*deactivate any calls to Log methods in the source code*&quot; before publishing my Android app to Google Play. Extract from section 3 of the &lt;a href=&quot;https://developer.android.com/studio/publish/preparing.html#turn-off-logging-and-debugging&quot;&gt;publication checklist&lt;/a&gt;:

&gt; Make sure you deactivate logging and disable the debugging option before you build your application for release. You can deactivate logging by removing calls to Log methods in your source files.

My open-source project is large and it is a pain to do it manually every time I release. Additionally, removing a Log line is potentially tricky, for instance:

    data.show();

If I comment the Log line, then the condition applies to the next line, and chances are load() is not called. Are such situations rare enough that I can decide it should not exist?

How to remove all debug logging calls before building the release version of an Android app?

I run my ProGuard for my Android project and get the following warnings: 

    Note: duplicate definition of library class [org.apache.http.conn.scheme.HostNameResolver]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [org.apache.http.conn.scheme.SocketFactory]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [org.apache.http.conn.ConnectTimeoutException]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [org.apache.http.params.HttpParams]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [android.net.http.SslCertificate$DName]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [android.net.http.SslError]
    Note: duplicate definition of library class [android.net.http.SslCertificate]
    
    Note: there were 7 duplicate class definitions.

I found [here][1] to fix this with ignoring it with: 

    -keep class org.apache.http.** { *; }
    -dontwarn org.apache.http.**
    -keep class android.net.http.** { *; }
    -dontwarn android.net.http.**

I do not see a way to remove the duplicates from the used libraries. Even after using ``dontwarn`` the warnings do not vanish.

**Is this the right way of handling this warning in just ignoring it or could this lead to problems?**

The error is gone if I set the minfyEnabled to &quot;false&quot;. But I do want it enabled.

Could not determine the dependencies of task &#39;:app:crashlyticsStoreDeobsDebug&#39; if I enable the proguard

My project implements a `TypeAdapter` in `Gson` during serialization/deserialization for preserving object&#39;s polymorphism state. Anyhow, the project works fine during development tests, but when it is released with **proguard obfuscation** and tested, it just crashes.

AssertionError in Gson EnumTypeAdapter when using Proguard Obfuscation

In my android app, i want to test some features with proguard on.

I don&#39;t need to really &quot;debug&quot; it, but i want proguard to run when i hit run in eclipse. I don&#39;t want to export the binary every time (so, in release mode) and save as apk and get it to the device to test.

Is there any way to run proguard in this way?

Is it possible to use proguard in debug mode?

We just changed our application to use the `appcompat-v7 support` library in order to take advantage of the support actionbar and support Material themes. Using `v21.0.0 of appcompat-v7` (and` v21.0.0 of support-v4)`, we are now seeing crashes in `Google Play` and Crashlytics only from Samsung devices` running `Android v4.2.2`. Here is the stack trace from Google Play and the app appears to crash as soon as the `actionbar` is shown and/or invalidated.

Other devices and emulators running v4.2.2 do no exhibit this behavior. It&#39;s my understanding that many Google apps are already using this new version of `appcompat` to display the action bar. If these apps are not reporting crashes on these devices, it would be helpful to know how this is being avoided/fixed.

I reported this as a bug to Google but it got closed with the reason that it is a development issue. Although I do agree this may be the case, I&#39;m wondering if/how anyone is currently able to use `appcompat-v7 v21.0.0` and not get crashes on `Samsung 4.2.2 devices`.

Update: It looks like Google is at least considering possible workarounds for this. See [this][1] for details.

How can I know where the problem is and debug this issue?
I only got the mapping output from ProGuard and don&#39;t know the line number.

How to debug with obfuscated (with ProGuard) applications on Android?

After some updates in Android SDK manager I try make signed apk and get this: 

    ProGuard: [] Warning: com.google.android.gms.auth.GoogleAuthUtil: 
      can&#39;t find referenced class com.google.android.gms.R
    ProGuard: [] Warning: com.google.android.gms.auth.GoogleAuthUtil: 
      can&#39;t find referenced class com.google.android.gms.R$string
    ...
    etc.

If set `-dontwarn com.google.android.gms.**` compiling is OK. But after run I get error many reports like this (from many devices):

    Caused by: android.view.InflateException: Binary XML file line #32: 
      Error inflating class com.google.android.gms.common.SignInButton

On my devices all ok. Before update I have not ProGuard warnings and all work perfectly. How it fix?



ProGuard: can&#39;t find referenced class com.google.android.gms.R

Android&#39;s official [proguard documentation](http://developer.android.com/tools/help/proguard.html#enabling-gradle) shows two primary optimizations:

 - set `minifyEnabled` to `true` 
 - use `proguard-android-optimize.txt`
   instead of `proguard-android.txt`

Are these two the most aggressive possible settings? 

I am writing an android library and need to make sure when people use my library that my code doesn&#39;t break. (I know there are rules I can put in my library to counter the proguard configuration set on the app that uses the library, but I don&#39;t want to do that if I don&#39;t have to.)

My android program has a `class A`, which has two `static inner class`. They are found to be stripped from `.dex` after applying proguard.

Android proguard, keep inner class

When I update to Android Studio 4.0 proguard-rules it shows warning `Unresolved class name`. Below is example but I sure it still waring the exist class in my project.

If I change from `**` to `*` this warning is gone.

It&#39;s possible to make a comment on a proguard.cfg file? I would like to have it with comments for what some lines are doing so that other developers don&#39;t have doubts about why i added.

Android: What are the recommended configurations for Proguard?

I just Obfuscated my Android code using proguard and then decompiled it.  There are a number of strings I would really like to hide from prying eyes.  When I decompiled my code the strings were there for everyone to see...and change.  One of the strings is a URL to my licensing server and they could in effect change the url to point to a fake server (as I will be releasing the server code to the public).  What is the best way of hiding this sort of information?

Also, I noticed that the R class strings are all random numbers but I can&#39;t find the R class in the decompiled code.  Where is it?

**Foe example** I see: `new SimpleCursorAdapter(localActivity, 2130903058, localCursor, arrayOfString, arrayOfInt);`

2130903058 is a layout file but what is it referencing?  The number means nothing unless it is pointing to some sort of address.

Hiding strings in Obfuscated code

My application has many activities and uses native library too. With the default ProGuard configuration which Eclipse generates ProGuard removes many things - OnClick methods, static members, callback methods which my native library uses... Is it there a simple way to instruct ProGuard to NOT remove anything from my package? Removing things saves only about 2.5% of the application size, but breaks my application completely. Configuring, testing and maintaining it class by class in ProGuard configuration would be a pain.
