I want to start unit testing my symfony 2 application with phpunit. I installed phpunit using composer (per-project dependancy).

From what I&#39;ve read, it seems like I should be able to set up a folder, e.g. tests/ , put a few files in it with unit test classes, and then run phpunit on that file and have it find and run the tests.

For whatever reason, in my installation (on OS X), it thinks the folder tests/ is a file, or so it would seem:

I have what I hope is a fairly standard installation of phpunit via PEAR, following these instructions http://www.newmediacampaigns.com/page/install-pear-phpunit-xdebug-on-macosx-snow-leopard, on OS X Snow Leopard.

How can i get phpunit to run tests from all files in a folder?

In Laravel&#39;s unit test, I can test a JSON API like that:

When I create a new mock I need to call the expects method. What exactly it does? What about its arguments?

Makes it sound pretty easy.  However depending on your setup, you might be going down a rabbit hole.

PEAR for example must be of a version higher than 1.8.1.  I had 1.8.0 at the time, so I went to find out how to update PEAR

    PEAR upgrade-all

Gives an error.  No access.

    sudo PEAR upgrade-all

Works, but upgrades the PEAR install owned by the user &#39;sudo&#39; (and not your primary account... or something like that, short version is 5that it plain don&#39;t work)

Is it possible to create a mock object with disabled constructor and manually setted protected properties?

Here is an idiotic example:

What is a good way to assert that two arrays of objects are equal, when the order of the elements in the array is unimportant, or even subject to change?

So my question is: Is there any way to get a PHPUnit mock object to return a different value based on its arguments? And if so, how?

# The Problem #

To improve my quality of code, I&#39;ve decided to try to learn how to test my code using Unit Testing instead of my mediocre-at-best testing solutions.

I decided to install PHPUnit using composer for a personal library that allows me to achieve common database functions. At first I didn&#39;t have a configuration file for PHPUnit and when I ran commands like:

    $ phpunit tests/GeneralStringFunctions/GeneralStringFunctionsTest

Please note that this is a terminal command, so I didn&#39;t include the `.php` extension. The GeneralStringFunctionsTest referred to above is actually a `GeneralStringFunctionsTest.php` file.

The output is what I expected:

&gt;   Time: 31 ms, Memory: 2.75Mb

&gt;   OK (1 test, 1 assertion)

I then tried to use a configuration file to automatically load the test suite instead of having to manually type in the file every time. I created a file called `phpunit.xml` in my root directory, and entered the following into the file: http://pastebin.com/0j0L4WBD:

I also have the composer json and lock file, as well as the phpunit xml file in the top level as files.

#Things I&#39;ve Tried#

 - Changing the directory in `phpunit.xml` to `tests/GeneralStringFunctions`
 - Changing the directory in `phpunit.xml` to `./tests`
 - Moving the `phpunit.xml` file to the `tests` directory and then changing the directory to be `./` instead of `tests`.
 - Adding a suffix attribute to the directory tag in `phpunit.xml` to specify &quot;Tests&quot; as the explicit suffix.

PHPUnit - &#39;No tests executed&#39; when using configuration file

I&#39;m trying to use PHPunit to test a class that outputs some custom headers.

The problem is that on my machine this:

This looks as if there is something else outputting to the terminal before the test runs even though there is no other file included and there is no other character before the beginning of the PHP tag. Could it be something inside PHPunit that is causing this?

**What could the issue be?**

Test PHP headers with PHPUnit

I can&#39;t seem to find an assertion in [**PHPUnit**][1] that simply tests if a string is contained somewhere in another string. Trying to do something like this:

   	public function testRecipe() {

		$plaintext = get_bread_recipe();

		$this-&gt;assertStringContains(&#39;flour&#39;, $plaintext);

	}

What real assertion would I put instead of `assertStringContains` ? I would prefer not having to worry about regex in this case because there is absolutely no need for it.

It&#39;s so simple that there must be something I have overlooked, but I just can&#39;t figure it out! Funny enough there is `assertStringStartsWith()` and `assertStringEndsWith()`!

**Update:** I know `strpos() !== false` could be used but I&#39;m looking for something cleaner. If I just use vanilla PHP functions anyway what&#39;s the whole point with all the assertions then...

How to run a specific phpunit xml testsuite?

What is the way to avoid phpunit having to call the constructor for a mock object? Otherwise I would need a mock object as constructor argument, another one for that etc. The api seems to be like this:

    getMock($className, $methods = array(), array $arguments = array(),
            $mockClassName = &#39;&#39;, $callOriginalConstructor = TRUE,
            $callOriginalClone = TRUE, $callAutoload = TRUE)

I don&#39;t get it to work. It still complains about the constructor argument, even with `$callOriginalConstructor` set to false.

I only have one object in the constructor and it is a dependency injection. So I don&#39;t think I have a design problem there.

In each case *all* test methode in the file `escalation/EscalationGroupTest.php` are executed. How to select just ONE method instead?

The name of the class is `EscalationGroupTest` and the version of `phpunit` is 3.2.8.

How to run single test method with phpunit?

First up, where my knowledge is at:
-

*Unit Tests* are those which test a small piece of code (single methods, mostly). 

*Integration Tests* are those which test the interaction between multiple areas of code (which hopefully already have their own Unit Tests). Sometimes, parts of the code under test requires other code to act in a particular way. This is where Mocks &amp; Stubs come in. So, we mock/stub out a part of the code to perform very specifically. This allows our Integration Test to run predictably without side effects.

All tests should be able to be run stand-alone without data sharing. If data sharing is necessary, this is a sign the system isn&#39;t decoupled enough.

Next up, the situation I am facing:
-

When interacting with an external API (specifically, a RESTful API that will modify live data with a POST request), I understand we can (should?) mock out the interaction with that API (more eloquently stated in [this answer][1]) for an Integration Test. I also understand we can Unit Test the individual components of interacting with that API (constructing the request, parsing the result, throwing errors, etc). What I don&#39;t get is how to actually go about this.

How do I test my interaction with an external API that has side effects?

A perfect example is [Google&#39;s Content API for shopping][2]. To be able to perform the task at hand, it requires a decent amount of prep work, then performing the actual request, then analysing the return value. Some of this is [without any &#39;sandbox&#39; environment][3].

The code to do this generally has quite a few layers of abstraction, something like:

Given that `testTheRequest` is the method called by the test suite, the example will execute a live request.

Now, this live request will (hopefully, provided everything went well) do a POST request that has the side effect of altering live data.

Is this acceptable? What alternatives do I have? I can&#39;t see a way to mock out the Request object for the test. And even if I did, it would mean setting up results / entry points for every possible code path that Google&#39;s API accepts (which in this case would have to be found by trial and error), but would allow me the use of fixtures.

A further extension is when certain requests rely on certain data being Live already. Using the Google Content API as an example again, to add a Data Feed to a Sub Account, the Sub Account must already exist.

One approach I can think of is the following steps;

 1. In `testCreateAccount`
  1. Create a sub-account
  1. Assert the sub-account was created
  1. Delete the sub-account
 1. Have `testCreateDataFeed` depend on `testCreateAccount` not having any errors
  1. In `testCreateDataFeed`, create a new account
  1. Create the data feed
  1. Assert the data feed was created
  1. Delete the data feed
  1. Delete the sub-account

This then raises the further question; how do I test the deletion of accounts / data feeds? `testCreateDataFeed` feels dirty to me - What if creating the data feed fails? The test fails, therefore the sub-account is never deleted... I can&#39;t test deletion without creation, so do I write another test (`testDeleteAccount`) that relies on `testCreateAccount` before creating then deleting an account of its own (since data shouldn&#39;t be shared between tests).

How are integration tests written for interacting with external API?

I have a PHPUnit test case class (consisting of some test functions). I would like to write a `oneTimeSetUp()` function to be called once for all my tests in the class (unlike the standard `setUp()` function which is called once for each test in the class). In other words, I&#39;m looking for a PHPUnit equivalent to the [JUnit `@BeforeClass` annotation][1].

Same question with a `oneTimeTearDown()` function.

Is it possible to do so in PHPUnit?

PHPUnit: How do I create a function to be called once for all the tests in a class?

Does anyone know whether there is an `assert` or something like that which can test whether an exception was thrown in the code being tested?

Mock private method with PHPUnit

I recently installed phpunit on my server via the pear installer.

When I go to run a test I get the following error:

After doing some searching, I tried making some modifications to the include_path in my php.ini file on the server. But that hasn&#39;t done a thing.

Any idea what might be causing this?

phpunit require_once() error

I have problems installing **PHPUnit 3.4.6** via **PEAR 1.9.0**. After I discover channel **pear.phpunit.de** and try to use one of following commands:

it fails, giving me following error:

I found several threads from people with the same problem, but upgrading PEAR to the newest version usually worked for them. Also there seems to be close to no tutorials for installing PHPUnit for Windows.

I would like to use PHPUnit to create code coverage reports. I have tried a lot of installation setups found on the web. But nothing seems to work out.

I use the latest version of Laravel 5 (&gt;5.2) and PHPUnit v. 5.0.10. Further, I use MAMP on Mac OS X 10.9.5 running PHP 7. 

When I run PHPUnit that is integrated in my Laravel distribution, I receive the following error.

Laravel 5: PHPUnit and no code coverage driver available

I am currently going to start from scratch with the phpunit tests for a project. So I was looking into some projects (like Zend) to see how they are doing things and how they organizing their tests.

Most things are pretty clear, only thing I have some problems with is how to organize the test suites properly.
Zend has an AllTests.php from which loads others test suites.   
Tough looking at the class it is useing `PHPUnit_Framework_TestSuite` to create a suite object and then add the other suites to it, but if I look in the PHPUnit docs for organizing tests in PHPUnit versions after 3.4 there is only a description for XML or FileHierarchy. The one using classes to organize the tests was removed.  
I haven&#39;t found anything that this method is deprecated and projects like Zend are still using it.

But if it is deprecated, how would I be able to organize tests in the same structure with the xml configuration? Executing all tests is no problem, but how would I organize the tests (in the xml) if I only wanted to execute a few tests. Maybe creating several xmls where I only specify a few tests/test suites to be run?  

So if I would want to only test module1 and module2 of the application, would I have an extra xml for each and defining test suites only for those modules (classes used by the module) in it. And also one that defines a test suite for all tests?  

Or would it be better to use the `@group` annotation on the specific tests to mark them to be for module1 or module2?

PHPUnit best practices to organize tests

... not knowing if &#39;mock&#39; is the right word.

Anyway, I have an inherited code-base that I&#39;m trying to write some tests for that are time-based. Trying not to be *too* vague, the code is related to looking at the history of an item and determining if that item has now based a time threshold.

At some point I also need to test adding something to that history and checking that the threshold is now changed (and, obviously, correct).

The problem that I&#39;m hitting is that part of the code I&#39;m testing is using calls to time() and so I&#39;m finding it really hard to know exactly what the threshold time should be, based on the fact that I&#39;m not quite sure exactly when that time() function is going to be called.

So my question is basically this: is there some way for me to &#39;override&#39; the time() call, or somehow &#39;mock out&#39; the time, such that my tests are working in a &#39;known time&#39;?

Or do I just have to accept the fact that I&#39;m going to have to do something in the code that I&#39;m testing, to somehow allow me to force it to use a particular time if need be? 

Either way, are there any &#39;common practices&#39; for developing time-sensitive functionality that is test friendly?

Part of my problem, too, is the fact that the time that things occurred in history affect the threshold. Here&#39;s an example of part of my problem...

Imagine you have a banana and you&#39;re trying to work out when it needs to be eaten by. Let&#39;s say that it will expire within 3 days, unless it was sprayed with some chemical, in which case we add 4 days to the expiry, *from the time the spray was applied*. Then, we can add another 3 months to it by freezing it, but if it&#39;s been frozen then we only have 1 day to use it after it thaws.

All of these rules are dictated by historical timings. I agree that I could use the Dominik&#39;s suggestion of testing within a few seconds, but what of my historical data? Should I just &#39;create&#39; that on the fly?

As you may or may not be able to tell, I&#39;m still trying to get a hang of all of this &#39;testing&#39; concept ;)

Can I &quot;Mock&quot; time in PHPUnit?

I just started working with PHPUnit and its colorful code coverage reports. I understand all the numbers and percentages save one: The C.R.A.P index. Can anyone offer me a solid explanation of what it means, how to analyze it and how to lower it?

Is there a way to get the tests inside of a `TestCase` to run in a certain order? For example, I want to separate the life cycle of an object from creation to use to destruction but I need to make sure that the object is set up first before I run the other tests.

I am trying to test my symfony2 application using PHPUnit. I got one project where everything works as expected, but on my other project I have this strange behaviour that PHPUnit either stops executing the Test Suite randomly near the end of all tests and restarts or restarts the tests after finishing the Test Suite and writing the code coverage. Other times it runs normally.

As my other project runs without any problems, there must be some problem within my code. But I cannot figure out what possibly triggers this behaviour! The logs don&#39;t show nothing unexpected/strange.

Yesterday, I noticed something strange: I decided to switch from MongoDB to MySQL because of some unrelated reasons. After the transition was done, all tests run without any problems. I tried it many times and I&#39;m not able to reproduce it anymore. As this only happened with my functional tests, I tend to think that the problem was my WebTestCase class, which runs some commands to clear and rebuild the database. Maybe someone who also uses MongoDB can reproduce this behaviour?

phpunit restarting tests randomly

I am making an API with `Laravel 5` and I&#39;m testing it with `PHPUnit`. I need to test legacy functionality for compatibility, which is an XML POST. As of right now, my first test looks like:

This is passing just fine. Next on my list is actually sending the XML data with the POST. So for my second test, I have:

Now, after that I need to add in the functionality to get the content from the request. I know there is a `Request` object that I can interact with but I don&#39;t exactly know which method to call on it. &lt;strong&gt;How do I get my XML from inside my controller?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

I am not able to get the content body of an HTTP Request at all. Since XML wasn&#39;t working, I moved forward with the REST part of my API, which uses JSON. Here&#39;s one of my tests:

This is my curl command adding the POST fields:

It seems to me that POSTFIELDS is getting added to the body of the request. In this case, I still have the same problem. I am not able to get body content of my HTTP headers. After commenting out my validation, I get:

So I have my `&#39;saved!&#39;` message. Great! But, in my database now I have a blank row. Not great. It is still not seeing the body content, just the headers.&lt;br /&gt;

I have just installed PHPUnit version 3.7.19 by Sebastian Bergmann via Composer and have written a class I would like to unit test.

I would like to have all my classes autoloaded into each unit test **without** having to use `include` or `require` at the top of my test but this is proving to be difficult!

This is what my directory structure looks like (a trailing / slash indicates a directory, not a file):

However, when I run `./vendor/bin/phpunit tests` from the command-line, I get the following error:

&gt; PHP Fatal error:  Class &#39;Returning&#39; not found in
&gt; /files/code/php/db/tests/returningTest.php on line 8

I noticed that `composer` produced an `autoload.php` file in `vendor/autoload.php` but not sure if this is relevant for my problem.

Also, in some other answers on Stack Overflow people have mentioned something about using [PSR-0](https://github.com/php-fig/fig-standards/blob/master/accepted/PSR-0.md) in composer and the `namespace` command in PHP, but I have not been successful in using either one.

Please help! I just want to autoload my classes in PHPUnit so I can just use them to create objects without worrying about `include` or `require`.

The questions asked in the other posts have to do with mocking methods that only take one argument.

However, my method takes multiple arguments and I need something like this: 

    $mock-&gt;expects($this-&gt;exactly(3))
    -&gt;method(&#39;MyMockedMethod&#39;)
        -&gt;with(
            $this-&gt;logicalOr(
                $this-&gt;equalTo($arg1, $arg2, arg3....argNb),
                $this-&gt;equalTo($arg1b, $arg2b, arg3b....argNb),
                $this-&gt;equalTo($arg1c, $arg2c, arg3c....argNc)
            )
        );

This code doesn&#39;t work because `equalTo()` validates only one argument. Giving it more than one argument throws an exception:

&gt; Argument #2 of PHPUnit_Framework_Constraint_IsEqual::__construct() must be a numeric

Is there a way to do a `logicalOr` mocking for a method with more than one argument?

PHPUnit: how do I mock multiple method calls with multiple arguments?

I am trying to learn how to test with phpunit and laravel. When start the test using `phpunit` command, I am getting a warning :

Phpunit tests gives warning no tests found in class

I&#39;ve tried running the following CLI command:

    phpunit -d xdebug.profiler_enable=on XYZTestCase.php

How can I get XDebug to run with PHPUnit on the CLI?

I would like to be able test that a result is an integer (1,2,3...) where the function could return any number, e.g.:

    $new_id = generate_id();

I had thought it would be something like:

    $this-&gt;assertInstanceOf(&#39;int&#39;, $new_id);

But I get this error:

**Argument #1 of PHPUnit_Framework_Assert::assertInstanceOf() must be a class or interface name**


How do I assert the result is an integer in PHPUnit?

I would like to run some tests, there are a lot of deprecation notices. But it does not matter because I&#39;ll stay on Symfony 2.8 for now. Do you know if it&#39;s possible to remove them?

and i want to check that a random ad i got from a function exists in the array. the code to get the ad looks like this:

now i want to check if the array contains the random ad i received, what i was able to do like this:

    $this-&gt;assertEquals(in_array($randad, $adUnitArr), 1); //check if ad in array

but my question is, is there an assert or some other way to check this thing better than the way i did it?? i tried using `assertArrayHasKey` but i got the following error:

 

    PHPUnit_Framework_Exception: Argument #1 (No Value) of PHPUnit_Framework_Assert::assertArrayHasKey() must be a integer or string

test if array contains value using PHPUnit

I am looking for the best way to go about testing the following static method (specifically using a Doctrine Model):

    class Model_User extends Doctrine_Record
    {
        public static function create($userData)
        {
            $newUser = new self();
            $newUser-&gt;fromArray($userData);
            $newUser-&gt;save();
        }
    }

Ideally, I would use a mock object to ensure that `fromArray` (with the supplied user data) and `save` were called, but that&#39;s not possible as the method is static.

Any suggestions?

I found the discussion on [Do you test private method][1] informative.

I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them.
Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them.

I thought of the following:

  - [Method Object][2] as adviced in [an answer][3] seems to be overkill for this.
  - Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests.
  - Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public

Which is best practice? Is there anything else?

It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via [reflection][4].

Best practices to test protected methods with PHPUnit

I have read and read articles on PHPUnit, SimpleTest, and other Unit Testing frameworks. They all sound so great! I finally got PHPUnit working with Codeigniter thanks to https://bitbucket.org/kenjis/my-ciunit/overview

Now my question is, how do I use it?

Every tutorial I see has some abstract use like `assertEquals(2, 1+1)` or:

    public function testSpeakWithParams()

        $hello = new SayHello(&#39;Marco&#39;);
        $this-&gt;assertEquals(&quot;Hello Marco!&quot;, $hello-&gt;speak());
    }

That is great if I had a function that would output such a predictable string. Usually my apps grab a bunch of data from the database then display it in some sort of table. So how do I test Codeigniter&#39;s controllers? 

I would like to do Test-Driven Development and I have read the tutorial on PHPUnits site, but once again the example seem so abstract. Most of my codeigniter functions are displaying data.

Is there a book or a great tutorial with a practical application and examples of PHPUnit testing?

I want to know if there is a solution on how to unit-test a PHP trait.

I know we can test a class which is using the trait, but I was wondering if there are better approaches.
