I have a combobox in C# and I want to use auto complete suggestions with it, however I want to be able to change the auto complete entries as the user types, because the possible valid entries are far too numerous to populate the `AutoCompleteStringCollection` at startup.

As an example, suppose I&#39;m letting the user type in a name.  I have a list of possible first names (&quot;Joe&quot;, &quot;John&quot;) and a list of surnames (&quot;Bloggs&quot;, &quot;Smith&quot;), but if I have a thousand of each, then that would be a million possible strings - too many to put in the auto complete entries.  So initially I want to have just the first names as suggestions (&quot;Joe&quot;, &quot;John&quot;) , and then once the user has typed the first name, (&quot;Joe&quot;), I want to remove the existing auto complete entries and replace them with a new set consisting of the chosen first name followed by the possible surnames (&quot;Joe Bloggs&quot;, &quot;Joe Smith&quot;).  In order to do this, I tried the following code:

However, this does not work properly.  It seems that the call to Clear() causes the auto complete mechanism to &quot;turn off&quot; until the next character appears in the combo box, but of course when the next character appears the above code calls Clear() again, so the user never actually sees the auto complete functionality.  It also causes the entire contents of the combo box to become selected, so between every keypress you have to deselect the existing text, which makes it unusable.  If I remove the call to Clear() then the auto complete works, but it seems that then the `AddRange()` call has no effect, because the new suggestions that I add do not appear in the auto complete dropdown.

I have been searching for a solution to this, and seen various things suggested, but I cannot get any of them to work - either the auto complete functionality appears disabled, or new strings do not appear.  Here is a list of things I have tried:

- Calling `BeginUpdate()` before changing the strings and `EndUpdate()` afterward.
- Calling `Remove()` on all the existing strings instead of Clear().
- Clearing the text from the combobox while I update the strings, and adding it back afterward.
- Setting the `AutoCompleteMode` to &quot;None&quot; while I change the strings, and setting it back to &quot;SuggestAppend&quot; afterwards.
- Hooking the` TextUpdate` or `KeyPress` event instead of `TextChanged`.
- Replacing the existing `AutoCompleteCustomSource` with a new `AutoCompleteStringCollection` each time.

None of these helped, even in various combinations.  [Spence](https://stackoverflow.com/users/53771/spence) suggested that I try overriding the `ComboBox` function that gets the list of strings to use in auto complete.  Using a reflector I found a couple of methods in the `ComboBox` class that look promising - `GetStringsForAutoComplete()` and `SetAutoComplete()`, but they are both private so I can&#39;t access them from a derived class.  I couldn&#39;t take that any further.

I tried replacing the `ComboBox` with a `TextBox`, because the auto complete interface is the same, and I found that the behaviour is slightly different. With the `TextBox` it appears to work better, in that the Append part of the auto complete works properly, but the Suggest part doesn&#39;t - the suggestion box briefly flashes to life but then immediately disappears.

So I thought &quot;Okay, I&#39;ll live without the Suggest functionality and just use Append instead&quot;, however when I set the `AutoCompleteMode` to Append, I get an access violation exception. The same thing happens with Suggest - the only mode that doesn&#39;t throw exceptions is `SuggestAppend`, even though the Suggest part doesn&#39;t then behave correctly. 

I thought that it was supposed to be impossible to get access violation exceptions when using C# managed code.  [Avram](https://stackoverflow.com/users/61883/avram) suggested I use &quot;lock&quot; to fix this, but I don&#39;t know what I should lock - the only thing that has a SyncRoot member is the `AutoCompleteStringCollection`, and locking that doesn&#39;t prevent the access violation exceptions. I also tried locking the `ComboBox` or `TextBox`, but that didn&#39;t help either. As I understand it, lock only prevents other locks, so if the underlying code isn&#39;t using lock then my using it won&#39;t make any difference.

The upshot of all this is that I can&#39;t currently use a `TextBox` or a `ComboBox` with dynamic auto complete.  Does anyone have any insights into how I could achieve this?

I still haven&#39;t got this working, but I have found out some more.  Maybe some of this will inspire someone else to come up with a solution.

After trying various other things such as changing the autocomplete in a worker thread, and using `BeginInvoke()` to simulate PostMessage() type behaviour, I finally gave up and just implemented my own auto complete dropdown using a list box.  It&#39;s much more responsive than the built-in one, and I spent less time doing that than I did trying to get the built-in one to work, so the lesson for anyone else who wants this behaviour is - you&#39;re probably better off implementing it yourself.

I have a ComboBox that doesn&#39;t seem to update the SelectedItem/SelectedValue.

The ComboBox ItemsSource is bound to a property on a ViewModel class that lists a bunch of RAS phonebook entries as a CollectionView. Then I&#39;ve bound (at separate times) both the `SelectedItem` or `SelectedValue` to another property of the ViewModel. I have added a MessageBox into the save command to debug the values set by the databinding, but the `SelectedItem`/`SelectedValue` binding is not being set.

The ViewModel class looks something like this:

The ComboBox is in a `DataTemplate` applied to an `ItemsControl` on a Window whose DataContext  has been set to a ViewModel instance.

The ComboBox displays the list of items correctly, and I can select one in the UI with no problem. However when I display the message box from the command, the PhonebookEntry property still has the initial value in it, not the selected value from the ComboBox. Other TextBox instances are updating fine and displaying in the MessageBox.

What am I missing with databinding the ComboBox? I&#39;ve done a lot of searching and can&#39;t seem to find anything that I&#39;m doing wrong.

You are correct in your assumption regarding the PhonebookEntry class.

The assumption I am making is that the DataContext used by my DataTemplate is automatically set through the binding hierarchy, so that I don&#39;t have to explicitly set it for each item in the `ItemsControl`. That would seem a bit silly to me.

If you run that example, you will get the behaviour I&#39;m talking about. The TextBox updates its binding fine when you edit it, but the ComboBox does not. Very confusing seeing as really the only thing I&#39;ve done is introduce a parent ViewModel.

I am currently labouring under the impression that an item bound to the child of a DataContext has that child as its DataContext. I can&#39;t find any documentation that clears this up one way or the other.

I.e.,

Window -&gt; DataContext = MainWindowViewModel &lt;br/&gt;
..Items -&gt; Bound to DataContext.PhonebookEntries &lt;br/&gt;
....Item -&gt; DataContext = PhonebookEntry (implicitly associated)

Binding a WPF ComboBox to a custom list

I have some elements in a ComboBox (WinForms with C#). I want their content to be static so that a user cannot change the values inside when the application is ran. I also do not want the user adding new values to the ComboBox

In the post [Enum ToString][1], a method is described to use the custom attribute `DescriptionAttribute` like this:

What I want has the following requirements:

 * Reading `(HowNice)myComboBox.selectedItem` will return the selected value as the enum value.
 * The user should see the user-friendly display strings, and not just the name of the enumeration values. So instead of seeing &quot;`NotNice`&quot;, the user would see &quot;`Not Nice At All`&quot;.
 * Hopefully, the solution will require minimal code changes to existing enumerations.

Obviously, I could implement a new class for each enum that I create, and override its `ToString()`, but that&#39;s a lot of work for each enum, and I&#39;d rather avoid that.

Any ideas?

How do I have an enum bound combobox with custom string formatting for enum values?

a lot of people have answered the question of how to bind an enum to a combo box in WinForms. Its like this:

    comboBox1.DataSource = Enum.GetValues(typeof(MyEnum));

But that is pretty useless without being able to set the actual value to display.

I have tried:

    comboBox1.SelectedItem = MyEnum.Something; // Does not work. SelectedItem remains null

I have also tried:

    comboBox1.SelectedIndex = Convert.ToInt32(MyEnum.Something); // ArgumentOutOfRangeException, SelectedIndex remains -1

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this?

Binding an enum to a WinForms combo box, and then setting it

In a WPF app, in MVP app, I have a combo box,for which I display the data fetched from Database. Before the items added to the Combo box, I want to display the default text such as

so that on pageload it displays and on selecting it the text should be cleared and the items should be displayed.

Selecting data from DB is happening. I need to display the default text until the user selects an item from combo box.

How to bind a List to a ComboBox?

I have a requirement where I HAVE TO use bootstrap autocomplete dropdown, BUT user can have free form text in that dropdown if they wish. Before you think about TypeAhead, I could use Bootstrap TypeAhead textbox, but I need to have the dropdown becasue we want to give some default values as headstart options in case users dont know what to search for. 

I am using this with MVC DropDownListFor as that creates a select control for us.

I found this article which does that for me.

All I had to do was take off the name from the select control and the control was letting me enter free form text. All good so far.

Now, I am using this in conjunction with Knockoutjs. I bind my options and selected value to the select control and then on row rendered of my template, I called (selector).combobox() which makes the select control a bootstrap comobobox and adds an input control and hides the select control in the scenes behind.

The problem now is when I try to get he values to post to server, since the value I put in input box is not a valid options from the options I gave to select control, it is always setting it to the first option by default. This is becasue, I set the binding of the selected value on select control and not on the input box which was created by bootstrap-combobox.js. 

My question is how do I get the input box to data-bind to the same porperty as the the select control was bound to.

Any other options??
Let me know if you need more clarification or have questions.

How can I make a WPF combo box have the width of its widest element in XAML?

C#, .NET 4.0, VS2010.

New to WPF.  I have a ComboBox on my MainWindow.  I hooked the SelectionChanged event of said combo box.  However, if I examine the value of the combo box in the event handler, it has the old value.  This sounds more like a &quot;SelectionChanging&quot; event, than a SelectionChanged event.  

How do I get the new value of the ComboBox after the selection has actually happend?

Currently:

I was under the impression you could type into a combo box besides selecting any values already in the list. However, I can&#39;t seem to find info on how to do this. Is there a property I need to add to it to allow typing of text?

I have editable combobox where not always the preferred item is in the drop-down list. 

I would like to have the possibility of manually entering text in the textbox which is propagated to the string bound to SelectedValue.

Right now the string bound to SelectedValue is only updated if the entered value is on of the ones in the ComboBox items.

How can I show a combobox in Android?

I need to be able to dynamically create `&lt;select&gt;` element and turn it into jQuery `.combobox()`. This should be element creation event, as opposed to some &quot;click&quot; event in which case I could just use jQuery `.on()`.

So does something like this exist?

I&#39;m reluctant to use livequery, because it&#39;s very outdated.

**UPDATE** The mentioned select/combobox is loaded via ajax into a jQuery colorbox (modal window), thus the problem - I can only initiate combobox using colorbox `onComplete`, however on change of one combobox another select/combobox must be dynamically created, therefor I need a more generic way to detect creation of an element (`select`in this case).

**UPDATE2** To try and explain the problem further - I have `select/combobox` elements created recursively, there is also a lot of initiating code inside `.combobox()`, therefore if I used a classic approach, like in [@bipen&#39;s answer](https://stackoverflow.com/a/15268861/82548), my code would inflate to insane levels. Hope this explains the problem better.

**UPDATE3** Thanks everyone, I now understand that since deprecation of `DOMNodeInserted` there is a void left in DOM mutation and there is no solution to this problem. I&#39;ll just have to rethink my application.

Are there any **professional** Combobox controls (dropdown list with autosuggestion) based on the jQuery library?

It should be able to handle **large datasets** and have some **skinning** options. A **multi-column result list** would be great too. I&#39;m working with ASP.NET, but it&#39;s a not a problem if I had to write a wrapper for it.

_For the sake of this question, let&#39;s say I have exactly that code ^^^_

When opening the combobox, either by clicking the button or focusing on the comboboxs text input, there is a large delay before showing the list of items. This delay gets noticeably larger when the select list has more options.

This delay doesn&#39;t just occur the first time either, it happens every time.

As some of the select lists on this project are very large (hundreds and hundreds of items), the delay/browser freezing up is unacceptable.


**Can anyone point me in the right direction to optimise this? Or even where the performance problem may be?**

I believe the issue may be to do with the way the script shows the full list of items (does an autocomplete search for an empty string), is there another way to display all items? Perhaps I could build a one off case for displaying all items (as it is common to open the list before starting to type) that doesn&#39;t do all the regex matching?

I have some combo-boxes that are set up as drop down lists, and the user can pick a number in them. I also have a Clear button that should clear the text from the combo boxes but I can&#39;t seem to get it. I&#39;ve tried:

The trace output shows that it is trying to bind to the class holding the IEnumerable not the actual item in the IEnumerable. I&#39;m confused as to a simple way to fill a combobox without adding a bunch a lines in xaml. 


It simply calls the ToString() for the object in itemssource. I have a work around which is this:

I&#39;m trying to bind a large collection to a ComboBox and I faced performance problems when opening ComboBox&#39;s popup. I searched internet and found that using VirtualizingStackPanel as a items panel template might help, but it helped only partially. If I bind a large collection to a ComboBox, I could open popup very quickly, that&#39;s ok, but if after that I bind another collection to a ComboBox and try to open popup again, it becomes very slow. Same is happening if you open popup for an empty ComboBox, then bind large collection and try to open popup again - it takes some seconds before popup opens.

Here is the XAML:

**UPDATE**: I thought about not binding new collection every time, but bind an ObservableCollection once and then just changing its content. Same thing, as soon as content of collection changes, opening a popup still takes several seconds :(

The following code works as you’d expect — `MyProperty` on the model is updated when the user picks a new item in the dropdown.

*Aside*: for my purposes, I ended up binding to both `SelectedItem` and `SelectedValue`. This way I get instant model updates based on UI changes (through the `SelectedValue` binding), and UI updates based on programmatic model changes (through the `SelectedItem` binding).
