Is it possible to change the application icon using JavaFX, or does it have to be done using Swing?

I&#39;m trying to decide whether I could switch to JavaFX for the user interface of my Java application. Most of my users would be using the Oracle JRE, which has JavaFX integrated these days. However, some are using OpenJDK (on linux). [This](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1927173/distributing-deploying-javafx-apps) (old) question suggests that OpenJDK deals very badly with JavaFX. According to [this](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15654271/javafx-on-linux) question, the alternative OpenJFX will only be fully integrated into OpenJDK in version 9. So my question is twofold:

* Is the JavaFX support in OpenJDK still so bad?
* If so, are there any Linux distributions that already offer an OpenJFX package so users wouldn&#39;t have to [build it themselves](https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX)?

Can one develop an entire application using JavaFX and run it on iOS, Android or Windows Phone 8, without writing platform-specific code?

I&#39;m mostly a C# programmer, I stopped writing Java about 10 years ago, but I try to keep up with the technology in Java by reading articles, talking with friends, etc.

I&#39;ve heard about the new rich GUI framework called JavaFX, but couldn&#39;t find any resource comparing it with non-Java parallels.

Since I&#39;m very familiar with C# and WPF, I&#39;d like to get a feel about how similar or different the two technologies are.

EDIT: Seeing as there&#39;s no answers coming, I&#39;ll try to be more specific:

1. WPF uses XAML to create the visual tree, does JavaFX have something similar?
2. WPF is best used with binding to a view model in an MVVM pattern, does JavaFX also make extensive use of binding?
3. WPF utilizes the GPU for rendering, does JavaFX do the same?
4. How does Silverlight compare to JavaFX when run through a browser on a net pc?

How does JavaFX compare to WPF?

I want to handle stage events (i.e. hiding) from my controller class. So all I have to do is to add a listener like this:

    ((Stage) myPane.getScene().getWindow()).setOn*whatIwant*(...);

But the problem is that initialization starts right after this code:

    Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource(&quot;MyGui.fxml&quot;));

And before this code:

    Scene scene = new Scene(root);
    stage.setScene(scene);

Thus `getScene` returns null.

The only workaround I found by myself is to add a listener to `myPane.sceneProperty`, and when it becomes not null I get scene, add to it&#39;s `windowProperty` my listener handling which I finally retrieve stage. And it all ends with setting desired listeners to stage events.

I think there are too many listeners.

Is it the only way to solve my problem?

How to get stage from controller during initialization?

In JavaFX, if I have a scene with 2 `VBox` elements and each `VBox` has multiple `Label` in it.  
If I set the top `VBox` to **invisible**, why does the bottom `VBox` **not move up** the scene where the top `VBox` was ?  

The `VBox` is **invisible** but I would expect the other objects to move into its place.

I am using FXML to load my controls.

I&#39;ve just started writing my first JavaFX 2 application after learning the basics and would like to internationalize it. 

I notice that in JavaFX 1.x, the scripting language allowed for very simple internationalization of strings. Are there any similar features in JavaFX 2?

In Swing you can simply use `setDefaultCloseOperation()` to shut down the entire application when the window is closed.

However in JavaFX I can&#39;t find an equivalent. I have multiple windows open and I want to close the entire application if a window is closed. What is the way to do that in JavaFX?

Edit:

I understand that I can override `setOnCloseRequest()` to perform some operation on window close. The question is what operation should be performed to terminate the entire application?

The `stop()` method defined in `Application` class does nothing.

How to close a JavaFX application on window close?

Presently I&#39;m working with JavaFX. Whenever I hover over a method of JavaFX its gives me the following error:

Accessing FXML controller class

My application is Swing-based. I would like to introduce JavaFX and configure it to render a Scene on a secondary display.
I could use a JFrame to hold a JFXPanel which could hold a JFXPanel but I would like to achieve this with JavaFX API.

Subclassing com.sun.glass.ui.Application and using Application.launch(this) is not an option because the invoking thread would be blocked.

When instantiating a Stage from Swing EDT, the error I get is:

    java.lang.IllegalStateException: Toolkit not initialized

Any pointers?

EDIT: Conclusions 

**Problem**: Non-trivial Swing GUI application needs to run JavaFX components. Application&#39;s startup process initializes the GUI after starting up a dependent service layer.

**Solutions**

**Subclass JavaFX Application class** and run it in a separate thread e.g.:


    public class JavaFXInitializer extends Application {
        @Override
        public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception {
            // JavaFX should be initialized
            someGlobalVar.setInitialized(true);
        }
    }

Sidenote: Because Application.launch() method takes a `Class&lt;? extends Application&gt;` as an argument, one has to use a global variable to signal JavaFX environment has been initialized.

Alternative approach: **instantiate JFXPanel in Swing Event Dispatcher Thread**:

    final CountDownLatch latch = new CountDownLatch(1);
    SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
        public void run() {
            new JFXPanel(); // initializes JavaFX environment
            latch.countDown();
        }
    });
    latch.await();

By using this approach the calling thread will wait until JavaFX environment is set up. 

Pick any solution you see fit. I went with the second one because it doesn&#39;t need a global variable to signal the initialization of JavaFX environment and also doesn&#39;t waste a thread.
 

JavaFX 2.1: Toolkit not initialized

I am trying to get my JavaFX program to run but am having some difficulty. I keep getting an error of &#39;java.lang.NullPointerException: Location is required.&#39; The fxml file is in the same package as Application class. Here is my very simple code:

The controller class does exist and is in the package specified in the fxml file. All of my names are correct and are where I think they should be. What am I missing? I did try renaming my fxml file in case it was a name issue. Please help. FYI, I am using Intellij IDEA on OSX.

UPDATE: This is a Maven issue. I setup Maven for this project and that caused the issue. I removed Maven temporarily so I can continue working without it. Does anyone have any insight as to how I would best handle this when using Maven?

I have an application that has a `TableView` that has an attached listener so it refreshes as soon as it detects a change, but the thing is that I&#180;m getting `java.lang.IllegalStateException: Not on FX application thread; currentThread = Smack Listener Processor (0)`.

Why am I getting java.lang.IllegalStateException &quot;Not on FX application thread&quot; on JavaFX?

Below code snippets is giving me error `Not on FX application thread; currentThread `=` JavaFX` `Application Thread`.This application was working fine in java 1.7 but when i moved it to fx8 it is now giving error. when I start the application on my 1st attempt it is working as intended .But after closing the stage and opening it again it is not working. 

The error is also ambiguous `Not On fx application thread  and current thread- javafx` `application thread`.What  did it mean by not on fx application thread if the current thread is a fx application thread.

How to avoid Not on FX application thread; currentThread = JavaFX Application Thread error?

I have a Java Desktop Application with JavaFX 2 in it and in my FX I&#39;ve got a TabPane. I want to set the default tab. In other words I want to set a tab as selected. I found that there are multiple ways to find out which tab is selected and I found `setSelectionModel()` but I can&#39;t figure out how to use it.

AutoComplete ComboBox in JavaFX

I have a JavaFX 2 table that is displaying contact details for people, lets imagine there are three columns: first name, last name and email address. When my application starts it populates the table with several rows of data about the people already in the system.

The problem is that the column widths are all the same. Most of the time the first and last name is displayed in full but the email address is getting clipped. The user can double click the divider in the header to resize the column but that will become tedious quickly. 

Once the table has been pre-populated I would like to programatically resize all the columns to display the data they contain but I can&#39;t figure out how to achieve this. I can see that I can call `col.setPrefWidth(x)` but that doesn&#39;t really help as I would have to guess the width.

Looking at [this code][1] they show a way to display a new window after a login. When username and password are correct it opens new dialog. I want a button click to open new dialog, without checking for username and password.
