I have a tab bar application and i have a button on my first view which i want to when pressed switch to my second tab programmatically in the tab bar.

I can&#39;t quite seem to figure it out how to get the index etc to switch to it i&#39;ve tried stuff like this.

    tababarController.selectedIndex = 1

With no success.

I&#39;ve found out that the height of a UITabBar is 49px (or 50px, depending on the source).

Because I don&#39;t like to use too much hard-coded values in my code I was wondering if it is possible to retrieve the height of the tabbar programmatically.

PS: The reason I&#39;m asking is because I have a view controller (with a list view containing text fields) that is either simply pushed by the navigationcontroller (pushViewController) or presented as a modal (presentModalViewController). As soon as the keyboard show up, the size of the view is reduced, but I have to take into account that the tabbar is only visible when the view controller is pushed and not presented as a modal.

I am using Storyboard and Xcode 6. I have next controllers and scenes in my Storyboard:

`UINavigationController` that has `HomeViewController` as a root. `HomeViewController` has a button that `Show (e.g. Push)` `UITabBarController`. `UITabBarController` has 4 `UIViewControllers`.

But my problem that after I Show `UITabBarController` there are no Navigation Bars in 4 `UIViewControllers`. But I supposed that if I `Show (e.g. Push)` `UITabBarController` then it should has embedded navigation controller that is initial controller in storyboard. Am I right? And if so how can I setup then navigation bar in Storyboard, because there are now default bar event in pushed tab bar that I see on storyboard. I have selected UIViewController and set simulated metrics in identity inspector to Translucent Navigation bar for the Top property, but I supposed it should be automatically added to this controller and to the tab bar without additional steps.

Or should I add new navigation controller for each tab bar items that will have their root view controllers?

The main question why I don&#39;t see navigation bar in storyboard using show (e.g. Push). For example if I add navigation controller and then set as root - tab bar controller then Xcode automatically add top navigation bar, but if the queue has an extra step like in my case HomeViewController the top navigation bar never appear automatically.

In short: I want to have two fullscreen views, where I can switch between view A and view B. I know I could just use an Tab Bar Controller, but I dont want to. I want to see how this is done by hand, for learning what&#39;s going on under the hood.

I have an UIViewController that acts as an root controller:

    @interface MyRootController : UIViewController {
    	IBOutlet UIView *contentView;
    }
    @property(nonatomic, retain) UIView *contentView;

    @end

The contentView is hooked up to an UIView which I added as an subview to the &quot;view&quot; of the Nib. This has green color and I see it fullscreen. Works fine.

Then, I created two other View Controllers pretty much the same way. ViewControllerA and ViewControllerB. ViewControllerA has a blue background, ViewControllerB has a black background. Just to see which one is active.

So, in the implementation of myRootController, I do this:

    // Implement viewDidLoad to do additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib.
    - (void)viewDidLoad {
        [super viewDidLoad];

        ViewControllerA *vcA = [[ViewControllerA alloc] initWithNib];
        [self.contentView addSubview:vcA.view];

By the way, the -initWithNib method looks like this:

That works. I see the view from ViewControllerA when I start the app. But now the big question is: A View Controller typically has all those methods like:

- (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated;
- (void)viewDidDisappear:(BOOL)animated;
- (void)viewDidLoad;

...and so on. Who or what, or how would those methods be called if I do it &quot;my&quot; way without a tab bar controller? I mean: If I allocate that ViewController&#39;s class and the view get&#39;s visible, would I have to take care about calling those methods? How does it know that viewWillAppear, viewDidDisappear, or viewDidLoad? I believe that the Tab Bar Controller has all this &quot;cleverness&quot; under the hood. Or am I wrong?

UPDATE: I&#39;ve tested it. If I release the view controller (for example: ViewControllerA), I will get no log message on viewDidDisappear. Only when allocating and initializing the ViewControllerA, I get an viewDidLoad. But that&#39;s it. So all signs stand for the cleverness of UITabBarController now ;) and I have to figure out how to replicate that, right?


View Controllers: How to switch between views programmatically?

Let&#39;s say I have a `UIButton` in one tab view in my iPhone app, and I want to have it open a different tab in the tab bar of the `TabBarController`.  How would I write the code to do this?  

I&#39;m assuming I unload the existing view and load a specific tab view, but I&#39;m not sure how to write the code exactly.

The structure of the app is as follow:

I got a 5-tab TabBarController linked to 5 View Controllers. In the initial showing tab, I call out a new View Controller to overlay as an introduction of the app.

I use this code to call the introduction view controller:

    IntroVC *vc = [[IntroVC alloc] init];
    [self presentModalViewController:vc animated:YES];
    [vc release]; 

After this `IntroVC` view controller shows up, the above error shows. 

p.s. I am using xCode 4.2 &amp; iOS 5.0 SDK, developing iOS 4.3 app.

I am setting my view controllers title like this in view did load:

    self.title = @&quot;my title&quot;;
	
prior to this I set the title in story boards for the view controller and navigation controller it is embedded in.  I set it to: &quot;Title&quot;;
	
When I click on the tab that holds the view controller the title of tab bar item and `uiviewcontroller` change to: my title
	
I would like for the view controller to change but the tab bar item to stay with the title: Title

How can I accomplish this?

I&#39;m switching tabs programmatically in a tab bar driven application using `UITabBarController.selectedIndex`. The problem I&#39;m trying to solve is how to animate the transition between the views. ie. from the view of the current tab to the view of the selected tab.

The first thought was to make use of the `UITabBarControllerDelegate`, but it appears that this is not called when programmatically switching tabs. I&#39;m now considering the `UITabBarDelegate.didSelectItem`: as a possible hook to set a transition animation.

Has anyone managed to animate the transitions?
 If yes, how ?

iPhone: How to switch tabs with an animation?

I have icons for a tabBar of size 100.

I checked [at Apple&#39;s Human Interface Guidelines of 2013](https://web.archive.org/web/20130631121714/http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/IconsImages/IconsImages.html) and it says the image size should be `30x30` / `60x60`.

But as the height of tab bar controller is 50, I kept the size of the image at `50x50`.

Now, when I run the project, I see the ugly design below:

Any idea what size images I should use so that the design will be perfect?

**Note:** I am not writing text also (e.g. Home, Search, etc). The text of the tab button is there in the image itself.

I need write some code to switch the view to another tab when the iOS app starts (so, for example, the second tab is shown by default rather than the first).

I&#39;m new to Swift, and have worked out the following:

- The code should probably go in the override func viewDidLoad() function of the ViewController of the first tab.

- The following code shows the second ViewController, but not with the tab bar at the bottom (vcOptions is the second ViewController tab item:

Programmatically switching between tabs within Swift

is it possible to determine whether my `UIView` is visible to the user or not?

My View is added as `subview` several times into a `Tab Bar Controller`.

Each instance of this view has a `NSTimer` that updates the view.

However I don&#39;t want to update a view which is not visible to the user.

Is this possible?

The UINavigationBar and UISearchBar both have a tintColor property that allows you to change the tint color (surprising, I know) of both of those items.  I want to do the same thing to the UITabBar in my application, but have found now way to change it from the default black color.  Any ideas?

I&#39;m trying to implement a UI structured like in the _Tweetie_ app, which behaves as so: the top-level view controller seems to be a navigation controller, whose root view is an &quot;Accounts&quot; table view.  If you click on any account, it goes to the second level, which has a tab bar across the bottom.  Each tab item shows a different list and lets you drill down further (the subsequent levels don&#39;t show the tab bar).

So, this seems like the implementation hierarchy is:

* `UINavigationController`
    1. _Accounts_: `UITableViewController`
    2. `UITabBarController`
         1. _Tweets_: `UITableViewController`
             * Detail view of a tweet/user/etc
         2. _Replies_: `UITableViewController`
         3. ...

This seems to work[^1], but appears to be unsupported according to the SDK documentation for `-pushViewController:animated:` (emphasis added):

&gt; _viewController_: The view controller that is pushed onto the stack. **It cannot be an instance of tab bar controller.**

I would like to avoid private APIs and the like, but I&#39;m not sure why this usage is explicitly prohibited even when it seems to work fine.  Anyone know the reason?

I&#39;ve thought about putting the tab bar controller as the main controller, with each of the tabs containing separate navigation controllers.  The problem with this is that each nav controller needs to share a single root view controller (namely the &quot;Accounts&quot; table in _Tweetie_) -- this doesn&#39;t seem to work: pushing the table controller to a second nav controller seems to remove it from the first.  Not to mention all the book-keeping when selecting a different account would probably be a pain.

How should I implement this the Right Way?

I have a problem with `UITabBarController`. In my application, I want to hide it but without using `hidesBottomBarWhenPushed` because I want to hide it not when I pushed it. For Example, I want to hide it when I press a Hide button in my application.

I need to add more tabs to the tab controller. I am doing it at the storyboard as follows:

1. I add a new view controller.
2. I control-drag from the tab bar controller to the new created view controller.
3. A window opens and I select Relationship Segue-View Controller.
4. The segue from the tab bar controller to the new view controller is created.

I think that is the way to do it, but after that the tab bar controller doesn&#39;t show any tab icons, the tab bar becomes grey.

Adding new tabs to a tab bar controller

I use `UITabBarController` as a root view and app supports iOS 6 and above. Project class hierarchy is as below.

    UITabBarController
      - tab1
        - UINavigationController
          - UIViewController
          - UIViewController
          .
          .
      - tab2
        - UINavigationController
          - UIViewController
          - UIViewController
          .
          .
          .
      - tab3
        - UIViewController
      - tab4
        - UIViewController

I used below code to change height of `UITabBar` in one of the UIViewControllers (which is inside `UINavigationController`) in above hierarchy.

    CGRect tabbarFrame = self.tabBarController.tabBar.frame;
    tabbarFrame.size.height += 60;
    self.tabBarController.tabBar.frame = tabbarFrame;

But its not changing the height. `UITabBar` is displayed with default height. Though logging its value prints changed value as shown below.

`tabBar.barTintColor` can&#39;t be changed in iOS 15 beta 4.

**Background**. We have an app in App Store and each year before the new iOS major version releases we download the iOS beta and test our app to fix the issues beforehand.

**Our problem**. This year when testing in iOS 15 beta 4 we found the UITabBarController&#39;s tabBar background color turns black and makes the item (both icon and title) hard to read. In our code we had self.tabBar.barTintColor = .white and this line of code doesn&#39;t work in iOS 15.

**Our attempts**. I search online and found a similar, not exactly the same, issue reported, https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/682420. And I tried `standardAppearance` but this is not the solution since with `appearance` I can&#39;t change `tabBar.tintColor`.

I have an UITabBar with 5 items. I want to change the unselected color of all items. The items aren&#39;t declared in the UIViewController classes (i built them and linked the views in the Storyboard).

So I have a button that is connected to a IBAction. When I press the button I want to hide the tab bar in my iOS app with a animation. This `[self setTabBarHidden:hidden animated:NO];`  or this `[self.tabBarController setTabBarHidden:hidden animated:YES];` does not work. This is my code without the animation:

I have a root view controller which isn’t set as the custom class for any of my view controllers on my storyboard. Instead, all of my view controllers are subclassing this class like so.

Detect when a tab bar item is pressed

I am trying to get desired color rendered in the background of Tab Bar however I am facing problems. 
These are the things that I tried :-
 
1. Changing the background color of tab bar object from storyboard. The color rendered is always lighter than the desired color.

2. Programmatically  changing the color of the tab bar using the following code inside `viewDidLoad()` method

            self.tabBar.translucent = false
            self.tabBar.backgroundColor = UIColor(hexString: &quot;323B61&quot;)

    It doesn&#39;t change the color. Instead , the color rendered is white.

I have views with a navigation bar and a tab bar. What I would like to happen is to hide the tab bar on a certain view and show the tab bar again when the user changes views.

I call this on the view wherein I want the tab bar hidden

    [self makeTabBarHidden:YES];

it works fine when i show/hide it on that view but when I navigate back to the previous view, the tab bar there is also hidden. I tried calling that function in the view&#39;s `viewDidUnload`, `viewWillDisappear`, `viewDidDisappear` functions but nothing happens. The same is true when the function is called in the previous view&#39;s `viewDidLoad`, `viewWillAppear`, `viewDidAppear` functions.
