An often used statement like `(void)x;` allows to suppress warnings about unused variable `x`. But if I try compiling the following, I get some results I don&#39;t quite understand:

    int main()
    {
        int x;
        (short)x;
        (void)x;
        (int)x;
    }

Compiling this with g++, I get the following warnings:

    $ g++ test.cpp -Wall -Wextra -o test
    test.cpp: In function ‘int main()’:
    test.cpp:4:13: warning: statement has no effect [-Wunused-value]
         (short)x;
                 ^
    test.cpp:6:11: warning: statement has no effect [-Wunused-value]
         (int)x;
               ^

So I conclude that casting to `void` is very different from casting to any other types, be the target type the same as `decltype(x)` or something different. My guess at possible explanations is:

* It is just a convention that `(void)x;` but not the other casts will suppress warnings. All the statements equally don&#39;t have any effect.
* This difference is somehow related to the fact that `void x;` isn&#39;t a valid statement while `short x;` is.

Which of these if any is more correct? If none, then how can the difference in compiler warnings be explained?

I&#39;m getting the user&#39;s location through 

    Location location = LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.getLastLocation(
                mGoogleApiClient);

This line of code is inside a method and before calling this method I do check for Android run time permissions. Only if the permission is available from the user then I call this method. Code is working perfectly.

The problem is that Android Studio still shows an error on this line not recognising that I&#39;ve already checked before calling this function.

    Call requires permission which may be rejected by user: code should explicitly check to see if permission is available (with `checkPermission`) or explicitly handle a potential `SecurityException`
Now how do I remove this warning? I&#39;ve already checked for permissions and don&#39;t want  to check again just to remove this warning. I&#39;ve tried adding @SuppressWarnings() but don&#39;t know the exact String to pass into this.             **@SuppressWarnings({&quot;all&quot;})** works but it is obviously not recommended.

How do I remove this warning?

I am getting a lot of these warnings from 3rd party code that I cannot modify.
Is there a way to disable this warning or at least disable it for certain areas (like #pragma push/pop in VC++)?

I have a project that uses log4cxx, boost, etc. libraries whose headers generate lots of (repetitive) warnings. Is there a way to suppress warnings from library includes (i.e. #include &amp;lt;some-header.h&amp;gt;) or includes from certain paths? I&#39;d like to use -Wall and/or -Wextra as usual on project code without relevant info being obscured. I currently use grep on make output but I&#39;d like something better.

I have a package in R (ROCR) that I need to load in my R environment.  Upon loading the package, a set of messages are printed.  This is ordinarily fine, but since the output of my R script is being used for further analysis I want to completely disable all of this output.  How do I do that?  Furthermore, I&#39;d prefer to do it without having to modify ROCR at all, so that future users of this script don&#39;t have to do that either.

So far:

 - `sink()` doesn&#39;t work here - redirecting both stdout and std err to `/dev/null` does nothing for me.
 - Unsurprisingly, `options(warnings=-1)` does nothing either, since these are not warnings, per se, being printed.

Any thoughts?

Disable messages upon loading a package

I have a HTTPSystemDefinitions.cs file in C# project which basically describes the older windows ISAPI for consumption by managed code.

This includes the complete set of Structures relevant to the ISAPI not all or which are consumed by code.  On compilation all the field members of these structures are causing a warning like the following:- 

&gt;  Warning	Field &#39;UnionSquare.ISAPI.HTTP_FILTER_PREPROC_HEADERS.SetHeader&#39; is never assigned to, and will always have its default value null

or

&gt;  Warning	The field &#39;UnionSquare.ISAPI.HTTP_FILTER_PREPROC_HEADERS.HttpStatus&#39; is never used

Can these be disabled with `#pragma warning disable`?  If so what would the corresponding error numbers be?  If not is there anything else I can do?  Bear in mind that I only what to do this for this file, its important that I get see warnings like these coming from other files.

I use the numpy `isinf` function to correct the results of the function in other files, so I do not need this warning.

In other words, I do not want the shell to print this message.

PyCharm provides some helpful warnings on code style, conventions and logical gotchas. It also provides a notification if I try to commit code with warnings (or errors).

Sometimes I consciously ignore these warnings for particular lines of code (for various reasons, typically to account for implementation details of third-party libraries). I want to suppress the warning, but just for that line (if the warning crops up on a different line where I&#39;m not being deliberate, I want to know about it!)
