An article about [setting up Ghost blogging](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-host-ghost-with-nginx-on-digitalocean) says to use `scp` to copy from my local machine to a remote server:

However, [Railscast 339: Chef Solo Basics](http://railscasts.com/episodes/339-chef-solo-basics?view=asciicast) uses `scp` to copy in the opposite direction (from the remote server to the local machine):

    scp -r root@178.xxx.xxx.xxx:/var/chef .

In the same Railscast, when the author wants to copy files to the remote server (same direction as the first example), he uses `rsync`:

    rsync -r . root@178.xxx.xxx.xxx:/var/chef

Why use the `rsync` command if `scp` will copy in both directions? How does `scp` differ from `rsync`?

When fetching or pulling from git repositories, or cloning a repository, I get to this point: 

    remote: Counting objects: 6666, done.
    remote: Compressing objects: 100% (5941/5941), done.
    Receiving objects:  23% (1534/6460), 11.68 MiB | 23 KiB/s  

And it hangs. The 23%/number of objects isn&#39;t a given, it ranges from single digits to up to the 60s, it seems. Also the speed for download listed freezes -- it&#39;s not like it slowly crawls down towards zero.

The guy I sit next to has no issues, so it&#39;s not a router problem. We use beanstalk for our work repositories, but I have the issue from beanstalk and github (although occaisonally it seems a github one will finish). 

The problem has only seemed to crop up since upgrading to Mountain Lion and updating Xcode. I&#39;ve wiped git (including XCode&#39;s) and tried installing it with homebrew. That didn&#39;t work, so I removed it and tried with their provided Mac installation package which also didn&#39;t fix the issue. 

Beanstalk provides SSH urls for the git repository, but I&#39;ve had no issues with connecting via SCP or SSH to servers that I&#39;ve done work on. 

This is killing my workflow so any help would be much appreciated!

I know I could just rename the file and remove the `:`, but I&#39;d like to know if it&#39;s possible to escape the colon.

Often I face this situation: I sshed into a remote server and ran some programs, and I want to copy their output files back to my local machine. What I do is remember the file path on remote machine, exit the connection, then `scp user@remote:filepath .`

Obviously this is not optimal. What I&#39;m looking for is a way to let me scp file back to local machine without exiting the connection. I did some searching, almost all results are telling me how to do scp from my local machine, which I already know.

I&#39;m not sure if this is possible or not. Basically, I&#39;m writing a script that allows me to [scp][1] a file to my hosting. This is it so far. Argument 1 is the file and argument 2 is the folder I want it to be placed in on the remote server:

    }

As you may/may not know, if the directory I specify when I call the function doesn&#39;t exist, then the transfer fails. Is there a way to check if the directory exists in the function and if it doesn&#39;t, create it.

I would prefer not having to ssh in every time and create the directory, but if I have got no choice, then I have got no choice.

How do I create a directory on remote host if it doesn&#39;t exist without ssh-ing in?

I want to be able to transfer a directory and all its files from my local machine to my remote one. I dont use SCP much so I am a bit confused.

I am connected to my remote machine via ssh and I typed in the command

`scp name127.0.0.1:local/machine/path/to/directory filename`

the `local/machine/path/to/directory` is the value i got from using `pwd` in the desired directory on my local host.

I am currently getting the error 

`No such file or directory`

Per the title, I&#39;m getting the following warning when I try to `scp` through an `ssh` tunnel. In my case, I cannot `scp` directly to foo because port 1234 on device foo is being forwarded to another machine bar on a private network (and bar is the machine that is giving me a tunnel to 192.168.1.23).

    $ # -f and -N don&#39;t matter and are only to run this example in one terminal
    $ ssh -f -N -p 1234 userA@foo -L3333:192.168.1.23:22

In my terminal shell, I ssh&#39;ed into a remote server, and I `cd` to the directory I want. Now in this directory, there is a file called `table` that I want to copy to my local machine `/home/me/Desktop`. How can I do this?

I tried `scp table /home/me/Desktop` but it gave an error about no such file or directory. Does anyone know how to do this?

    scp -i /Users/Hello_Kitty22/Downloads/myAmazonKey.pem /Users/Hello_Kitty22/Downloads/phpMyAdmin-3.4.5-all-languages.tar.gz  hk22@mec2-50-17-16-67.compute-1.amazonaws.com:~/.

and the error I got:

I tried to use sshfs to mount the remote file system on my local machine, but it is not as user friendly as simply launching a GUI, plus it seems to require root access on the client machine, which is not very convenient.

Of course command-line tools such as scp are possible, but I am looking for a simple GUI.

I&#39;m aware of `paramiko`, a Python module that supports SSH and SFTP; but it doesn&#39;t support SCP.

I use scp shell command to copy huge folder of files.

But at some point of time I had to kill the running command (by Ctrl+C or kill).

To my understanding scp copied files sequentially, so there should be only one partially copied file.

**How can same scp command be resumed to not overwrite successfully copied files and to properly handle partially copied files?**

P.S. I know I can do this kind of stuff in rsync, but scp is faster for me for some reason and I use it instead.

I am having trouble copying files from a remote server using SSH. Using PuTTY I log in to the server using SSH. Once I find the file I would like to copy over to my computer, I use the command:

It looks like it was successful, but it only ends up creating a new folder labeled &#39;localdir&#39; in the remote directory `/dir/of/`.

Several times throughout the day, I may be running a test where I need to look through a log file on a remote server. I&#39;ve gotten used to using my terminal to `sftp` into the remote server and pull the desired log file down to `/tmp` on my local machine.

I was looking through the options today using `man sftp` in an attempt to figure out a way to run the following commands basically in a single line so that I don&#39;t have to type a command, press enter, type a command press enter, etc. 

(what I do now)

    sftp myuser@myserver
    --mypassword at prompt
    lcd /tmp
    get /dir/dir/dir/dir/file
    quit

I found while looking through `man sftp` a reference to `scp` which I haven&#39;t used before. I feel it may be what I&#39;m looking for, but I didn&#39;t see a way to specify where I wanted the securely copied file to go. 

Could someone provide me with a way to get `/dir/file` from a remote server and have it download to `/tmp/file_plus-my-description`?

I was hoping to be able to run an sftp or scp command similar to a regularUNIX copy like:

I am running a putty client on a Windows machine to connect successfully to a Linux box. Now I want to be able to copy a file from the Linux machine under the path `/home/ubuntu/myfile` to `C:/Users/Anshul/Desktop` on my local computer. The user at the Windows machine is `anshul`. I am giving the following command on putty but it is not working:

    scp /home/ubuntu/myfile ip_address_of_windows_machine:C:/Users/Anshul/Desktop 

I think the path for the Windows machine is wrong. Please help as I have banged my head on a large number of forums but none seem to give correct path for Windows server. Don&#39;t suggest alternate options like `WinScp`

I am attempting to copy a local file &#39;magento.tar.gz&#39; from my local machine to a remote server using SSH through a VPN. This is connecting to the Virtual Machine&#39;s Internal IP which I&#39;ve used as xx.x.x.xx here.

I have full &#39;sudo&#39; access on the SSH account so there shouldn&#39;t be any problem copying across. I have tried the following:

This asks me to type in my local password. Afterwards returns `cp: user@xx.x.x.xx/var/www: Not a directory`

Returns the same.

Do I need to include a SSH in there anywhere?

Do I need to connect via SSH to the site first?


Side note: I&#39;ve managed to connect via SSH to the server, browse to the directory and make a folder and delete it using `sudo mkdir` etc so I definitely have permissions.

SSH SCP Local file to Remote in Terminal Mac Os X

I have an EC2 instance running (FreeBSD 9 AMI ami-8cce3fe5), and I can ssh into it using my amazon-created key file without password prompt, no problem.

However, when I want to copy a file to the instance using scp I am asked to enter a password:

    scp somefile.txt -i mykey.pem root@my.ec2.id.amazonaws.com:/
    
    Password:

Any ideas why this is happening/how it can be prevented?

I wonder if there is a way for me to SCP the file from remote2 host directly from my local machine by going through a remote1 host.

The networks only allow connections to remote2 host from remote1 host. Also, neither remote1 host nor remote2 host can scp to my local machine.

Is there something like:

   `scp user1@remote1:user2@remote2:file .`

First window: `ssh remote1`, then `scp remot2:file .`.

Second shell: `scp remote1:file .`

First window: `rm file; logout`

I could write a script to do all these steps, but if there is a direct way, I would rather use it.

At the moment, to access `remote1`, i have the following in `$HOME/.ssh/config` on my local machine.

Once on `remote1`, to access `remote2`, it&#39;s the standard local DNS and port 22. What should I put on `remote1` and/or change on `localhost`?

What I want to do is to `scp` the following folders

    /bench1/1cpu/p_0/image/
    /bench1/1cpu/p_1/image/
    /bench1/2cpu/p_0/image/
    /bench1/2cpu/p_1/image/

As you can see I want to recursively use `scp` but excluding all folders that name &quot;fl_X&quot;. It seems that scp has not such option.

scp has not such feature. Instead I use the following command

     rsync -av --exclude &#39;fl_*&#39; user@server:/my/dir

But it doesn&#39;t work. It only transfers the list of folders!! something like `ls -R`

What is the best method of performing an scp transfer via the Java programming language? It seems I may be able to perform this via JSSE, JSch or the bouncy castle java libraries. None of these solutions seem to have an easy answer.

So, I&#39;m attempting to simply transfer folder of files from my local computer to a server via ssh and scp.  After sudoing I&#39;m using the command as follows:

    scp -r C:/desktop/myfolder/deployments/ user@host:/path/to/whereyouwant/thefile

I get the error:

&gt; ssh: C: Name or service not known

I&#39;m guessing its my syntax for `c:/desktop` etc.  Any ideas?

Copying a local file from Windows to a remote server using scp

When I try downloading a file from my server onto my computer, it actually downloads the file onto the server.

(Note I am already SSH&#39;d into my server before typing this command. I&#39;ve watched tutorials on YouTube and people are using their terminal without SSHing into any particular server, however I don&#39;t think I can do this with PuTTY on Windows?)

    scp -r -P2222 kwazy@mywebsite.com:/home2/kwazy/www/utrecht-connected.nl ~/Desktop/

The problem is that I am specifying the location to download the file as only `~/Desktop/`

This creates a folder called `Desktop` in my server, instead of copying the files onto my local desktop.

I&#39;d greatly appreciate any assistance.

I&#39;m new to linux, I want to copy a file from remote to local system... now I&#39;m using scp command in linux system.. I have some folders or files names are with spaces, when I try to copy that file, it shows the error message: &quot;No such file or directory&quot;

I tried:

    scp ael5105@192.168.0.200:&#39;/home/5105/test/gg/Untitled Folder/a/qy.jpg&#39; /var/www/try/

I saw the some reference online but I don&#39;t understand perfectly, can any one help on this?

How do I escape spaces in path for scp copy in Linux?

I&#39;m using Ansible to copy a directory (900 files, 136MBytes) from one host to another:
```yaml
---
- name: copy a directory
      copy: src={{some_directory}} dest={{remote_directory}}
```
This operation takes an incredible 17 minutes, while a simple `scp -r &lt;src&gt; &lt;dest&gt;` takes a mere 7 seconds.

I have tried the Accelerated mode, which according to the [ansible docs][1], but to no avail.

&gt; can be anywhere from 2-6x faster than SSH with ControlPersist enabled, and 10x faster than paramiko.

but to no avail.

Why is copying a directory with Ansible so slow?

I know it is not recommended, but is it at all possible to pass the user&#39;s password to scp?

I&#39;d like to copy a file via scp as part of a batch job and the receiving server does, of course, need a password and, no, I cannot easily change that to key-based authentication.


How to pass password to scp?

`scp -r /Applications/XAMPP/htdocs/keypairfile.pem uploads ec2-user@publicdns:/var/www/html`

where uploads is a directory returns  Permission denied (publickey). 

However

`scp -i /Applications/XAMPP/htdocs/keypairfile.pem footer.php ec2-user@publicdns:/var/www/html`

works **(notice the flag change).**

uploads is an empty folder

These are the file permissions for the uploads directory 

`drwxrwxrwx   3 geoffreysangston  admin     102 Nov 15 01:40 uploads`

These are the file permissions for /var/www/html

`drwxr-x--- 2 ec2-user ec2-user 4096 Jan  5 20:45 html`

I&#39;ve tried changing html to 777 and that doesn&#39;t work either.



SCP Permission denied (publickey). on EC2 only when using -r flag on directories

I want to use scp command to copy a local file to remote server, but I get an error message after input the password of user in remote server.

    ~]$ scp gitadmin.pub git@123.150.207.18:
    git@123.150.207.18&#39;s password: 
    bash: scp: command not found
    lost connection

I checked on server using the git user and it seems the scp command can be found and openssh-clinets were installed too.

    git@... ~]$ scp

I&#39;m confused for the situation. Did I missing some configuration on server? (We are using RHEL6 as server.)

It&#39;s my fault in path setting.
I added &#39;custom.sh&#39; in /etc/profile.d and added following lines in it to add /usr/local/node/bin directory to PATH.

    export PATH=&quot;/usr/local/node/bin:$PATH&quot; 
But the format is wrong. I removed the pair of &#39;&quot;&#39; and it works OK now. It should be:

    export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/node/bin

A probe mistake...^_^



Error when using scp command &quot;bash: scp: command not found&quot;

I&#39;m looking for an `rsync`-like program which will create any missing parent directories on the remote side.

For example, if I have `/top/a/b/c/d` on one server and only `/top/a` exists on the remote server, I want to copy `d` to the remote server and have the `b` and `c` directories created as well.

The command:

    rsync /top/a/b/c/d remote:/top/a/b/c

won&#39;t work because `/tmp/a/b` doesn&#39;t exist on the remote server. And if it did exist then the file `d` would get copied to the path `/top/a/b/c`.

This is possible to do with `rsync` using `--include` and `--exclude` switches, but it is very involved, e.g.:

    rsync -v -r a dest:dir  \
      --include &#39;a/b&#39;       \
      --include &#39;a/b/c&#39;     \
      --include &#39;a/b/c/d&#39;   \
      --include &#39;a/b/c/d/e&#39; \
      --exclude &#39;a/*&#39;       \
      --exclude &#39;a/b/*&#39;     \
      --exclude &#39;a/b/c/*&#39;   \
      --exclude &#39;a/b/c/d/*&#39; 

will only copy `a/b/c/d/e` to `dest:dir/a/b/c/d/e` even if the intermediate directories have files. (Note - the includes must precede the excludes.)

Are there any other options?


rsync - create all missing parent directories?

I&#39;m trying to test some C code that I&#39;m writing. The only issue is that the code needs to be executed on a remote machine. 
My laptop is pretty old, and there is no driver for my wireless card available for Ubuntu, so booting into Linux to circumvent this problem isn&#39;t an option. 
Here&#39;s my question: 

I&#39;m using putty to SSH into the remote machine, and I&#39;m writing my code on Notepad++.
The location of my file is:
     `C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\WMU\5260\A2.c`

My problem is that when I use the command `scp C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\WMU\5260\A2.c ~`
I get the error `could not resolve hostname C:. Name or service not known&quot;.`

I&#39;ve also tried `scp Users\Admin\Desktop\WMU\5260\A2.c ~` which gives me the error `Cannot stat &#39;Users\Admin\Desktop\WMU\5260\A2.c&#39;: no such file or directory`

What am I doing incorrectly?
