Which is the best Java memcached client, and why?

I am currently using memcached with my java app, and overall it&#39;s working great.
&lt;p&gt;
The features of memcached that are most important to me are:
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;it&#39;s fast, since reads and writes are in-memory and don&#39;t touch the disk
&lt;li&gt;it&#39;s just a key/value store (since that&#39;s all my app needs)
&lt;li&gt;it&#39;s distributed
&lt;li&gt;it uses memory efficiently by having each object live on exactly one server
&lt;li&gt;it doesn&#39;t assume that the objects are from a database (since my objects are not database objects)
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
However, there is one thing that I&#39;d like to do that memcached can&#39;t do.  I want to periodically (perhaps once per day) save the cache contents to disk.  And I want to be able to restore the cache from the saved disk image.
&lt;p&gt;
The disk save does not need to be very complex.  If a new key/value is added while the save is taking place, I don&#39;t care if it&#39;s included in the save or not.  And if an existing key/value is modified while the save is taking place, the saved value should be either the old value or the new value, but I don&#39;t care which one.
&lt;p&gt;
Can anyone recommend another caching solution (either free or commercial) that has all (or a significant percentage) of the memcached features that are important to me, and also allows the ability to save and restore the entire cache from disk?

Ok, I just started with Lumen and I&#39;m trying to use the Auth, but a call to either Auth::check or any other function of Auth.. leads to the below Error
**Fatal error: Class &#39;Memcached&#39; not found in   vendor\illuminate\cache\MemcachedConnector.php on line 52**.
I don&#39;t want to use Memcached never used it before.

I disabled it in the **.env** file and set the **CACHE_DRIVER** and **SESSION_DRIVER** to array, but still shows the same error. 

I decided not to use Auth again and to manually handle my authetication with sessions/tokens, but enabling the MiddleWare StartSession results to the same error.

After going A little Deep in the framework
I Hard Coded the session driver name in the `SessionManager` Class
within the method `getSessionConfig`

It works though but not a good way of doing things.
There is no config file, i believe all configurations are written in **.env** file, but i really don&#39;t know why the session_driver and cache_driver is defaulted to memecached even after changing it in the **.env** and then ran `composer dump-autoload` ... Lumen :(

My DataBase configuration works perfectly so the .env file is loaded
quite alright.

Laravel Lumen Memcached not found

With the NoSQL movement growing based on document-based databases, I&#39;ve looked at MongoDB lately.  I have noticed a striking similarity with how to treat items as &quot;Documents&quot;, just like Lucene does (and users of Solr).

So, the question: **Why would you want to use NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra, CouchDB, etc) over Lucene (or Solr) as your &quot;database&quot;?**

What I am (and I am sure others are) looking for in an answer is some deep-dive comparisons of them.  Let&#39;s skip over relational database discussions all together, as they serve a different purpose. 

Lucene gives some serious advantages, such as powerful searching and weight systems.  Not to mention facets in Solr (which Solr is being integrated into Lucene soon, yay!).  You can use Lucene documents to store IDs, and access the documents as such just like MongoDB.  Mix it with Solr, and you now get a WebService-based, load balanced solution.

You can even throw in a comparison of out-of-proc cache providers such as Velocity or MemCached when talking about similar data storing and scalability of MongoDB.

The restrictions around MongoDB reminds me of using MemCached, but I can use Microsoft&#39;s Velocity and have more grouping and list collection power over MongoDB (I think).  Can&#39;t get any faster or scalable than caching data in memory.  Even Lucene has a memory provider.
 
MongoDB (and others) do have some advantages, such as the ease of use of their API.  New up a document, create an id, and store it.  Done.  Nice and easy.

I have worked quite a bit with memcached the last weeks and just found out about Redis. When I read this part of their readme, I suddenly got a warm, cozy feeling in my stomach:

So, honestly - Is memcache really that old dinousaur that is a bad choice from a performance perspective when compared to this newcomer called Redis?

I read this article: http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2006/09/27/apc-or-memcached/ from way back when.. I want to get the best caching engine available so that my application is really fast. Of course I don&#39;t want to over-cache but I want to at least choose the best thing out there. In that article it says Memcached is slow and apc is fast so why is everyone choosing [memcached][1]?

How can I get all the keys set in my memcached instance(s)?

I tried googling, but didn&#39;t find much except that `PHP` supports a [`getAllKeys` method][1], which means it is actually possible to do this somehow. How can I get the same within a telnet session?

I have tried out all the retrieval related options mentioned in [memcached cheat sheet][2] and [Memcached telnet command summary][3], but none of them work and I am at a loss to find the correct way to do this.

Note: I am currently doing this in development, so it can be assumed that there will be no issues due to new keys being set or other such race conditions happening, and the number of keys will also be limited.

Someone can explain me the difference between Memcache and Memcached in PHP environment?

Memcache Vs. Memcached

I&#39;m trying to speed up my benchmark (3 tier web architecture), and I have some general questions related to Memcache(d) and Varnish.

- What is the difference?  
It seems to me that *Varnish* is behind the web server, caching web pages and doesn&#39;t require change in code, just configuration.  
On the other side, *Memcached* is general purpose caching system and mostly used to cache result from database and does require change in `get` method (first cache lookup).

- Can I use both? Varnish in front web server and Memcached for database caching?

- What is a better option?

  (scenario 1 - mostly write,

  scenario 3 - read and write are similar)

I&#39;ve been searching the internet trying to find some good documentation on the [python-memcached][1] module, but all I could find was [this example on the MySQL website][2], and the documentation on its methods isn&#39;t great.

Does anyone know **IF**, **WHEN** or **HOW** I can get [Memcached][1] running on a Windows 64bit environment? 

I&#39;m setting up a new hosting solution and would much prefer to run a 64bit OS, and since it&#39;s an ASP.Net MVC solution with SQL Server DB, the OS is either going to be Windows Server 2003 or (hopefully!) 2008.

I know that this could spill over into a debate regarding 32bit vs 64bit on servers, but let&#39;s just say that my preference is 64bit and that I have some [very][2] [good][3] reasons.

So far, I&#39;ve tried a number of options and found a [bit][4] of [help][6] related to getting this up on a 32bit machine (and succeeded I might add), but since the original [Windows port][5] is Win32 specific, this is hardly going to help when installing as a service on x64. It also has a dependency on the [libevent][7] for which I can only get a Win32 compiled version.

I suspect that simply loading all this up in C++ and hitting &quot;compile&quot; (for 64bit) wouldn&#39;t work, not least because of the intricate differences in 32 and 64bit architectures, but I&#39;m wondering if anyone is working on getting this off the ground? Unfortunately, my expertise lie in managed code (C#) only, otherwise I would try and take this on myself, but I can&#39;t believe I&#39;m the only guy out there trying to get [memcached][1] running on a 64 bit Windows server....am I?

**Yes I&#39;m afraid I&#39;m still looking for an answer to this - all my efforts (with my pathetic C++ skills) to make a stable build have failed - I&#39;ve trashed one server and 3 VM&#39;s just trying it out so now I turn to the real experts.
Is anyone planning on porting this to 64bit? Or are you really suggesting that I use MS Velocity instead? I shudder at the thought.**

@Lars - I do use Enyim actually - it&#39;s very good, but what you&#39;re referring to is a client, rather than the server part.

@DannySmurf - I&#39;ve only been able to install it as a service on a 32 bit OS. 64 bit OS rejects the installation of this Win32 service. Of course yes, lots of Win32 code works seamlessly on x64 architecture, hence you can run 32bit apps (like Office for instance) or games on Vista/XP 64 etc, but this doesn&#39;t translate directly when it comes to services. I&#39;m no expert, I suspect that it has to do with the syncs or eventing that services need to subscribe to, and I suspect that 64 and 32 don&#39;t play nicely. I&#39;m happy to be corrected on any of this, but to answer your question - yes I have tried.

@OJ - thanks very much for the straight-forward response. I thought as much, but wasn&#39;t sure if anyone else had suggestions or had already gone down this route. Maybe when StackOverflow is LIVE, then more people will respond and let me know if this is something being looked into, and although I can try and compile it myself - I simply can&#39;t &quot;trust&quot; (with my C++ experience level) that it would provide &quot;Enterprise Level&quot; reliability in such a crucial component of large scalable solutions. I think it would need educated intervention rather than my unsanitised experimental approach before I could be confident. One little oversight on my part, could bring the site down. Can I get Memcached running on a Windows (x64) 64bit environment?

I&#39;m using memcached for some caching in my Rails 3 app through the simple `Rails.cache` interface and now I&#39;d like to do some background job processing with redis and resque.

I think they&#39;re different enough to warrant using both. On heroku though, there are separate fees to use both memcached and redis. Does it make sense to use both or should I migrate to just using redis?

I like using memcached for caching because least recently used keys automatically get pushed out of the cache and I don&#39;t need the cache data to persist. Redis is mostly new to me, but I understand that it&#39;s persistent by default and that keys do not expire out of the cache automatically.

EDIT: Just wanted to be more clear with my question. I know it&#39;s feasible to use only Redis instead of both. I guess I just want to know if there are any specific disadvantages in doing so? Considering both implementation and infrastructure, are there any reasons why I shouldn&#39;t just use Redis? (I.e., is memcached faster for simple caching?) I haven&#39;t found anything definitive either way.

I&#39;m testing out using memcached to cache django views.  How can I tell if memcached is actually caching anything from the Linux command line?

How do you know if memcached is doing anything?

Redis can do everything that Memcached provides (LRU cache, item expiry, and now clustering in version 3.x+, currently in beta) or by tools like twemproxy. The performance is similar too. Morever, Redis adds persistence due to which you need not do cache warming in case of a server restart.

In spite of this, on studying stacks of large web scale companies like Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter etc, I found that they use both Memcached and Redis for different purposes, not using Redis for primary caching. The primary cache is still Memcached, and Redis is used for its data structures based logical caching.

As of 2014, why is memcached still worth the pain to be added as additional component into your stack, when you already have a Redis component which can do everything that memcached can? What are the favorable points that incline the architects/engineers to still include memcached apart from already existing Redis?

For our platforms, we have completely discarded Memcached, and use redis for plain as well as logical caching requirements. Highly
performant, flexible and reliable.

Some example scenarios:

 - Listing all cached keys by a specific pattern, and read or delete their values. Very easy in redis, not doable ( easily ) in memcached.
 - Storing a payload more than 1mb, easy to do in redis, requires slab size tweaks in memcached, which has performance side effects of its own.
 - Easy snapshots of current cache content
 - Redis cluster is production ready as well along with language drivers,hence clustered deployment is easy too.



If redis is already a part of the stack, why is Memcached still used alongside Redis?

Memcached with Windows and .NET

I&#39;ve pasted the example from [php.net](http://www.php.net/manual/en/memcache.examples-overview.php) for using memcached in php and I&#39;m getting:  

    Fatal error: Class &#39;Memcache&#39; not found

I have this in my php.ini:

How do I tell Spring cache not to cache null value in @Cacheable annotation

Is it possible to somehow run `Rails.cache.clear` and only clear keys with a certain name/string?

I don&#39;t want to clear the entire cache...just keys with the string `blog/post` in the name (ie. `blog/post/1`, `blog/post/2`).

Hello when I attempt to install pylibmc on OSX Lion using pip I get the following error:

    ./_pylibmcmodule.h:42:10: fatal error: &#39;libmemcached/memcached.h&#39; file not found

Memcached vs. Redis?

It seems that PHP has two memcached libraries named [memcache][1] and [memcached][2]. What is the difference and how do you know which one to use? Is one outdated? It seems that memcached offers more methods so I would assume that means it has had the most development - but it also seems to require [external C/C++ libraries][3] so I&#39;m not sure if I can install it.

It seems that memcache has been around longer, does not require additional libraries, and has [pre-compiled binaries][7] for even windows! I would think that it would be the better choice for now. However, being new to memcached (server) I&#39;m not sure if there is some super important features in memcached (php) that make it worth the extra trouble.

When should I use Memcache instead of Memcached?

I&#39;m working with a couple of Web Servers behind a Load Balancer and I can enable Sticky Sessions to hold a user to the one specific Web Servers - this will work.

I have been reading about PHP Sessions &amp; MemCache. I must say what I&#39;ve read is a touch confusing as some pages say its a good idea and others the opposite.

Questions:

1. is it possible to keep php sessions in memcache?
2. is it better to use sticky sessions over memcache?
3. what are the problems with php sessions in memcache - note: I can get enough cache (amazon so its expandable).

Simple, probably dumb question: Suppose I have a Java server that stores in memory commonly used keys and values which I can query (let&#39;s say in a HashMap)
