After doing a search in Vim, I get all the occurrences highlighted. How can I disable that?  I now do another search for something gibberish that can&#39;t be found.

Is there a way to just temporarily disable the highlight and then re-enable it when needed again?

I am trying to understand what shard and replica is in Elasticsearch, but I didn&#39;t manage to understand it. If I download Elasticsearch and run the script, then from what I know I have started a cluster with a single node. Now this node (my PC) have 5 shards (?) and some replicas (?). 

What are they, do I have 5 duplicates of the index? If so why? I could need some explanation.

A few candidates:

- Lucene/Lucene with Compass/Solr

- Sphinx

- Postgresql built-in full text search

- MySQl built-in full text search

Selection criteria:

- result relevance and ranking
- searching and indexing speed
- ease of use and ease of integration with Django
- resource requirements - site will be hosted on a [VPS][1], so ideally the search engine wouldn&#39;t require a lot of RAM and CPU
- scalability
- extra features such as &quot;did you mean?&quot;, related searches, etc

Anyone who has had experience with the search engines above, or other engines not in the list -- I would love to hear your opinions.

EDIT: As for indexing needs, as users keep entering data into the site, those data would need to be indexed continuously. It doesn&#39;t have to be real time, but ideally new data would show up in index with no more than 15 - 30 minutes delay

I have to change some connection strings in an incredibly old legacy application, and the programmers who made it thought it would be a great idea to plaster the entire app with connection strings all over the place.

I am using Visual Studio.  Say for instance I have a static public method named FooBar() in class Utils. Let&#39;s also say that I use this method in a lot of .aspx files.  Let&#39;s say I change the method signature of FooBar() to FooBar(string), and subsequently I&#39;d like to find all the instances of Utils.FooBar so I can update them. 

Now let&#39;s say I go to the Solution Explorer search box, select &quot;Search within file contents&quot;, and type &quot;Utils&quot;.  Despite the fact that I make Utils.* method calls everywhere, the only thing that shows up is the Utils.cs file.  If I keep typing &quot;Utils.FooBar&quot;, nothing shows up.  

Right now, I am launching a cygwin window and using grep since normal windows search is pretty useless too.  But it seems like there there must be an actual way of searching within all files in Visual Studio. Am I missing something?

What is faceted search?

I&#39;m developing a high-volume web application, where part of it is a MySQL database of discussion posts that will need to grow to 20M+ rows, smoothly.

I was originally planning on using MyISAM for the tables (for the built-in [fulltext search capabilities][1]), but the thought of the *entire table* being locked due to a single write operation makes me shutter. Row-level locks make so much more sense (not to mention InnoDB&#39;s other speed advantages when dealing with huge tables). So, for this reason, I&#39;m pretty determined to use InnoDB.

The problem is... InnoDB doesn&#39;t have built-in fulltext search capabilities.

Should I go with a third-party search system? Like [Lucene(c++)][2] / [Sphinx][3]? Do any of you database ninjas have any suggestions/guidance? &lt;del&gt;LinkedIn&#39;s [zoie][4] (based off Lucene) looks like the best option at the moment&lt;/del&gt;... having been built around realtime capabilities (which is pretty critical for my application.) I&#39;m a little hesitant to commit yet without some insight...

Fulltext Search with InnoDB

I&#39;m having a hard time understanding how to use full text search (FTS) with Android. I&#39;ve read the [SQLite documentation on the FTS3 and FTS4 extensions][1]. And I know [it&#39;s possible to do on Android][2]. However, I&#39;m having a hard time finding any examples that I can comprehend.

# The basic database model

A SQLite database table (named `example_table`) has 4 columns. However, there is only one column (named `text_column`) that needs to be indexed for a full text search. Every row of `text_column` contains text varying in length from 0 to 1000 words. The total number of rows is greater than 10,000. 

- How would you set up the table and/or the FTS virtual table? 
- How would you perform an FTS query on `text_column`?

**Additional notes:**

- Because only one column needs to be indexed, only using an FTS table (and dropping `example_table`) would be [inefficient for non-FTS queries][4].
- For such a large table, storing duplicate entries of `text_column` in the FTS table would be undesirable. [This post][5] suggests using an [external content table][6].
- External content tables use FTS4, but FTS4 is [not supported before Android API 11][7]. An answer can assume an API &gt;= 11, but commenting on options for supporting lower versions would be helpful.
- Changing data in the original table does not automatically update the FTS table (and vice versa). Including [triggers][8] in your answer is not necessary for this basic example, but would be helpful nonetheless.

I would like to write an SQL query that searches for a keyword in a text field, but only if it is a &quot;whole word match&quot; (e.g. when I search for &quot;rid&quot;, it should not match &quot;arid&quot;, but it should match &quot;a rid&quot;.

I am using MySQL.

Fortunately, performance is not critical in this application, and the database size and string size are both comfortably small, but I would prefer to do it in the SQL than in the PHP driving it.

Okay, so I&#39;m trying to make a full text search in multiple columns, something simple like this:

    SELECT * FROM pages WHERE MATCH(head, body) AGAINST(&#39;some words&#39; IN BOOLEAN MODE)

Now i want to order by relevance, (how many of the words are found?) which I have been able to do with something like this:

    SELECT * , MATCH (head, body) AGAINST (&#39;some words&#39; IN BOOLEAN MODE) AS relevance 
    FROM pages
    WHERE MATCH (head, body) AGAINST (&#39;some words&#39; IN BOOLEAN MODE)
    ORDER BY relevance

Now here comes the part where I get lost, I want to prioritize the relevance in the `head` column.

I guess I could make two relevance columns, one for `head` and one for `body`, but at that point I&#39;d be doing somewhat the same search in the table three times, and for what i&#39;m making this function, performance is important, since the query will both be joined and matched against other tables.

**So, my main question is**, is there a faster way to search for relevance and prioritize certain columns? (And as a bonus possibly even making relevance count number of times the words occur in the columns?)

Any suggestions or advice would be great.

**Note:** I will be running this on a LAMP-server. (WAMP in local testing)

I am implementing a table that has a column with a data type of `tsvector` and I am trying to understand what index would be better to use?

GIN or GiST?

In looking through the [postgres documentation here][1] I seem to get that:

- GiST is faster to update and build the index and less accurate than gin.

- GIN is slower to update and build the index but is more accurate.

OK, so why would anybody want a gist indexed field over gin? If gist could give you the wrong results? There must be some advantage (outside performance) on this.

Can anybody explain in layman&#39;s terms when I would want to use GIN vs. GiST?

Difference between GiST and GIN index

I would like to search across projects for variable usages, or at least for strings.  I&#39;ve got [IndexYourFiles][1] which works well for text searches, but I have to re-index every now and then and would like an integrated solution.  

Is there any way that I can search across projects in IntelliJ IDEA? So far I have only been able to search within the currently-open project.  I&#39;m guessing IntelliJ can&#39;t do this natively; are there any plug-ins out there to support this?

I am working on a project with a requirement of coming up with a generic dashboard  where a users can do different kinds of grouping, filtering and drill down on different fields. For this we are looking for a search store that allows slice and dice of data.

There would be multiple sources of data and would be storing it in the Search Store. There may be some pre-computation required on the source data which can be done by an intermediate components.

I have looked through several blogs to understand whether ES can be used reliably as a primary datastore too. It mostly depends on the use-case we are looking for. Some of the information about the use case that we have :

* Around 300 million record each year with 1-2 KB.
* Assuming storing 1 year data, we are today with 300 GB but use-case can go up to 400-500 GB given growth of data.
* As of now not sure, how we will push data, but roughly, it can go up to ~2-3 million records per 5 minutes.
* Search request are low, but requires complex queries which can search data for last 6 weeks to 6 months.
* document will be indexed across almost all the fields in document.

How reliable is ElasticSearch as a primary datastore against factors like write loss, data availability

I&#39;m preparing to deploy a Rails app on Heroku that requires full text search. Up to now I&#39;ve been running it on a VPS using MySQL with Sphinx.

However, if I want to use Sphinx or Solr on Heroku, I&#39;d need to pay for an add-on.

I notice that PostgreSQL (the DB used on Heroku) has built-in full text search capability.

Is there a reason I couldn&#39;t use Postgres&#39;s full-text search? Is it slower than Sphinx or is there some other major limitation?

Any reason not use PostgreSQL&#39;s built-in full text search on Heroku?

In my JavaEE application, I&#39;m using the Atom-based [Google Sites API](https://developers.google.com/google-apps/sites/) to retrieve content from a non-public Google Site. In essence, we&#39;re using the Google Site as a lightweight CMS, and from within the application I use the API to retrieve the site contents to feed my online help system. I&#39;ve had this setup for a while and it&#39;s working without a hitch.

The issue
---------

In my application, I need to add full-text search functionality to the online help system. I knew this feature request would come along at some point, so when deciding on Google Sites to host my content, I checked whether the Sites API supports full-text search. [It does](https://developers.google.com/google-apps/sites/docs/1.0/developers_guide_protocol#ContentFeedQueriesFullText). For example, the following URL will search the entire site `my-site` for pages containing the keyword `user`.

    https://sites.google.com/feeds/content/my.doma.in/my-site?q=user

This works, and gives me the expected result pages. But it does so **only for content written in Western languages**, or, more specifically, languages in which tokens/words are separated by whitespace and punctuation. When I run a similar search on my Japanese content, searching for the keyword `ユーザー`:

    https://sites.google.com/feeds/content/my.doma.in/my-site?q=%E3%83%A6%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B6%E3%83%BC

I will only get result pages in which the search term appears as a bare string, i.e. delimited by either white-space or punctuation. Since Japanese is a language written in [scriptio continua](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scriptio_continua), this is not sufficient. Pages that contain, for example:

&gt; ご自身の**ユーザー**基本情報の確認

will not show up in the results. So it seems that the search index that is used behind the scenes is created based on &quot;Western&quot; lexical rules, and that Japanese content is not correctly tokenized. However, when I search for the same keyword from the Google Site&#39;s *Search this site* field, I do get the correct results. I conclude that **a correctly tokenized index exists, but it seems to be impossible to use it for an API-based search**.

What I&#39;ve tried so far
----------------------

To remedy this situation, these are the avenues that I&#39;ve explored so far:

 - I&#39;ve tried looking for language settings in Google Sites itself. There&#39;s a general UI language setting which was already set to Japanese and has no impact on the API query results. There are no per-page or per-template language settings to force the indexer/tokenizer&#39;s hand.
 - I&#39;ve tried quoting the search string with double quotes (`&quot;ユーザー&quot;`).
 - I&#39;ve tried including wildcards (`*ユーザー*`).
 - I&#39;ve tried using additional language parameters to the URL that are common in other Google APIs: `lang`, `hl` (interface language), `rl` (results language),..
 - I&#39;ve tried creating a Google [Custom Search Engine](https://www.google.jp/cse/), but it seems impossible to get it to work on a non-public Google Site.

So...

I&#39;m quickly running out of ideas here. In a worst case scenario, I will end up having to retrieve, tokenize, and index all of the content myself and make it searchable that way. Since this will require a substantial effort, I would like to know if anyone has encountered the same issue and has found an acceptable workaround or solution.

As I find out, since version 3.8.9, mongoose support full text search. But I can&#39;t find a good documentation for it!&lt;br&gt;

I&#39;m working with fulltext, I executed an command to add the fulltext index to multiple comments, and returned no errors, then I did:

    SELECT * FROM products WHERE MATCH(`brand`) AGAINST(&#39;Skoda&#39;);

Which is in the brand column - but I get following:

I realize that a lot of questions have been asked relating to full text search and Entity Framework, but I hope this question is a bit different.

I am using Entity Framework, Code First and need to do a full text search.  When I need to perform the full text search, I will typically have other criteria/restrictions as well - like skip the first 500 rows, or filter on another column, etc.

I see that this has been handled using table valued functions - see http://sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/simons/archive/2008/12/18/LINQ-to-SQL---Enabling-Fulltext-searching.aspx.  And this seems like the right idea.

Unfortunately, table valued functions are not supported until Entity Framework 5.0 (and even then, I believe, they are not supported for Code First).  

My real question is what are the suggestions for the best way to handle this, both for Entity Framework 4.3 and Entity Framework 5.0.  But to be specific:

1. Other than dynamic SQL (via `System.Data.Entity.DbSet.SqlQuery`, for example), are there any options available for Entity Framework 4.3?

2. If I upgrade to Entity Framework 5.0, is there a way I can use table valued functions with code first?

Entity Framework, Code First and Full Text Search

We have a whole bunch of queries that &quot;search&quot; for clients, customers, etc. You can search by first name, email, etc. We&#39;re using LIKE statements in the following manner:  

    SELECT * 
    FROM customer 
    WHERE fname LIKE &#39;%someName%&#39;

Does full-text indexing help in the scenario? We&#39;re using SQL Server 2005.

When should you use full-text indexing?

This seems like such a basic task, but I&#39;m stumped.

How, in Xcode, do you execute a textual search though (the XML contents of) all the .xib files in a project?

For example, all of our .xib files contain this string on the second line: `com.apple.InterfaceBuilder3.CocoaTouch.XIB`. So I&#39;d think that searching all project files for that string would return all .xib files, but Xcode insists &quot;0 occurrences&quot;. I&#39;ve double checked that the Project Find Options look correct.

I must be missing something obvious. (Or Xcode is somehow hard-coded to skip .xib files.)

I&#39;m trying to find all the .xib files that reference a particular class (and a text search seems like the most direct way).

Thus, my need for a workaround.  I&#39;m only using search in my site on an actual search page - so it needs to work basically the same way that Google works (in the eyes on a Joe Sixpack-type user). Not nearly as complicated, but this sort of match really shouldn&#39;t fail.

How do you get leading wildcard full-text searches to work in SQL Server?

Hi I am doing some research before I implement search feature into my service. 
I&#39;m currently using PostgreSQL as my main storage. I could definitely use PostgreSQL&#39;s built-in Full-Text-Search but the problem is that I have data scattered around several tables. 

My service is an e-commerce website. So if a customer searches &quot;good apple laptop&quot;, I need to join `Brand` table, `post` table and `review` table(1 post is a combination of several reviews + short summary) to fully search all posts. If I were to use elasticsearch, I could insert complete posts by preprocessing.

From my research, some people said PostgreSQL&#39;s FTS and elasticsearch have similar performance and some people said elasticsearch is faster. Which would be better solution for my case?
