I have created a text file in Unix environment using Java code.

For writing the text file I am using `java.io.FileWriter` and `BufferedWriter`. And for newline after each row I am using `bw.newLine()` method (where `bw` is object of `BufferedWriter`).

And I&#39;m sending that text file by attaching in mail from Unix environment itself (automated that using Unix commands).

My issue is, after I download the text file from mail in a Windows system, if I 
opened that text file the data is not properly aligned. `newline()` character is 
not working, I think so.

I want same text file alignment as it is in Unix environment, if I opened the
text file in Windows environment also.

How do I resolve the problem?

Forgot to specify I&#39;m on Windows, and installing Cygwin isn&#39;t really an option.  Otherwise I would use vi or vim.

I understand the difference between the two so there&#39;s no need to go into that, but I&#39;m just wondering what the reasoning is behind why Windows uses both CR and LF to indicate a line break. It seems like the Linux method (just using LF) makes a lot more sense, saves space, and is easier to parse.

I&#39;m using gVim on Windows. My code shows `^M` characters at the end of lines. I used `:set ff=dos` to no avail. The `^M` characters remain for existing lines, but don&#39;t show up for newlines I enter.  I&#39;ve switched modes to mac (shows `^J` characters) and unix (also shows `^M` characters) and back to dos.  Has anyone else seen this?

The string is so long I would like to split it into three chunks:

The problem is, if i write

it doesn&#39;t work, probably because the browser considers the &#39;\n&#39; to be pure text and displays it as such (the \r doesn&#39;t work either).

*On the other hand, I could change the h1.innerHTML instead of the textContent and write*:

    h1.innerHTML = &quot;...I would like to insert a carriage return here...&lt;br /&gt;&quot;;

*Here the &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt; would do the job, but doing so would replace not just the text content but all the HTML content of my h1, **which is not quite what I want***.

Is there a simple way to solve my problem?&lt;br /&gt; I wouldn&#39;t resort to creating multiple block elements just to have the text on different lines. &lt;br /&gt;

I have some data in a table and there are some carriage returns in places where I don&#39;t want them. I am trying to write a query to get all of the strings that contain carriage returns.

Both are valid SQL but are not returning what I am looking for. Do I need to use the *Like* command or a different command? How do I get the carriage return into the query?

The carriage return is not necessarily at the end of the line either (may be in the middle).
