In [this][1], [this][2] and [this][3] thread I tried to find an answer on how to set the margins on a single view. However, I was wondering if there isn&#39;t an easier way. I&#39;ll explain why I rather wouldn&#39;t want to use this approach:

I have a custom Button which extends Button. If the background is set to something else than the default background (by calling either `setBackgroundResource(int id)` or `setBackgroundDrawable(Drawable d)`), I want the margins to be 0. If I call this:

    public void setBackgroundToDefault() {
        backgroundIsDefault = true;
        super.setBackgroundResource(android.R.drawable.btn_default);
        // Set margins somehow
    }

I want the margins to reset to -3dp (I already read [here][4] how to convert from pixels to dp, so once I know how to set margins in px, I can manage the conversion myself). But since this is called in the `CustomButton` class, the parent can vary from LinearLayout to TableLayout, and I&#39;d rather not have him get his parent and check the instanceof that parent. That&#39;ll also be quite inperformant, I imagine.

Also, when calling (using LayoutParams) `parentLayout.addView(myCustomButton, newParams)`, I don&#39;t know if this adds it to the correct position (haven&#39;t tried however), say the middle button of a row of five.

Question: Is there any easier way to set the margin of a single Button programmatically **besides using LayoutParams?**

EDIT: I know of the LayoutParams way, but I&#39;d like a solution that avoids handling each different container type:

Because &lt;code&gt;this.getLayoutParams();&lt;/code&gt;returns a &lt;code&gt;ViewGroup.LayoutParams&lt;/code&gt;, which do not have the attributes &lt;code&gt;topMargin&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;bottomMargin&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;leftMargin&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;rightMargin&lt;/code&gt;.
The mc instance you see is just a &lt;code&gt;MarginContainer&lt;/code&gt; which contains offset (-3dp) margins and (oml, omr, omt, omb) and the original margins (ml, mr, mt, mb).

In Android, how do I set margins in dp programmatically?

In my app *&quot;Tide Now WA&quot;* which I recently tested for compatibility using
the new Nexus 9 tablet (Lollipop - API 21).

It writes some button text. This app writes the text correctly using Android 2.3 and Android
4.0. I.e. mixed capital and lower case letters. 

When same app is run on my Nexus 9 all the letters
in the text are capitalized. 

FWIW my manifest contains the following statement:

Can I fix this in my code or is it a bug in the O.S.

Why is my Button text forced to ALL CAPS on Lollipop?

I have created a layout that contains two buttons, Next and Previous. In between the buttons I&#39;m generating some dynamic views. So when I first launch the application I want to disable the &quot;Previous&quot; button since there wont be any previous views. I also want to disable the &quot;Next&quot; button when there are not more views to display. Is there anyway to disable the buttons?

I made a button that changes the background drawable on different states, this way:

The problem here is that I&#39;m also trying to change the textColor as I do with the drawable but I&#39;m not being able to. I already tried android:textColor and android:color but the first doesn&#39;t work whilst the seconds changes my background.

The next code is part of my layout. Regarding to the text color it only works for the normal state text color, thus not changing it to the white one while pressed

Android customized button; changing text color

Before the `AppCompat` update came out today I was able to change the color of buttons in Android L but not on older versions. After including the new AppCompat update I am unable to change the color for either version, when I do try the button just disappears. Does anyone know how to change the button color?

The following pictures shows what I want to achieve:

The white button is default, the red one is what I want.

This is what I was doing previously to change the color of the buttons in the `styles.xml`:

Coloring Buttons in Android with Material Design and AppCompat

On pressing the back button, I&#39;d like my application to go into the stopped state, rather than the destroyed state.

In the Android [docs][1] it states:

&gt;...not all activities have the behavior that they are destroyed when BACK is pressed. When the user starts playing music in the Music application and then presses BACK, the application overrides the normal back behavior, preventing the player activity from being destroyed, and continues playing music, even though its activity is no longer visible

**How do I replicate this functionality in my own application?**

I think there must be three possibilities...

1. Capture the back button press (as below) and then call whatever method(s) the home button calls.

I know about services and am using one in the application to which this problem is related. This question is specifically about putting the Activity into the stopped state rather than the destroyed state on pressing the back button.

So i tried, to change the background and the text color of my new Button:

This gives a strange result, my old button, gets messed up:

Change Screen Orientation programmatically using a Button

Having a solid experience in non-Java and non-Android area, I&#39;m learning Android.

I have a  lot of confusion with different areas, one of them is how to handle button clicks. There are at least 4 way of doing that (!!!), they are briefly listed [here](http://www.remwebdevelopment.com/dev/a69/Different-Ways-To-Handle-Clicks.html)

for consistency purpose I will list them:

1. Have a member of the `View.OnClickListener` class in the activity and assign it to an instance that will handle `onClick` logic in the `onCreate` activity method.

2. Create &#39;onClickListener&#39; in the &#39;onCreate&#39; activity method and assign it to the button using setOnClickListener 

3. Implement &#39;onClickListener&#39; in activity itself and assign &#39;this&#39; as a listener for the button. For the case if activity has few buttons, button id should be analyzed to execute &#39;onClick&#39; handler for the proper button

4. Have public method on the activity that implements &#39;onClick&#39; logic and assign it to the button in the activity xml declaration

**Question #1:**

Are those all methods, is there any other option? (I don&#39;t need any other, just curious)

For me, the most intuitive way would be the latest one: it requires the least amount of code to be typed and is the most readable (at least for me).

Though, I don&#39;t see this approach used widely. What are cons for using it?

**Question #2:**

What are pros/cons for each of these methods? Please share either your experience or a good link. 

Any feedback is welcome!

Android Fragment onClick button Method

Until now, when I wanted to stop the user from pressing the button, I would set the `button.setClickable(false);` and usually change the text to some kind of grey colour (to let the user know that the button is disabled). Today I stumbled upon the `setEnabled()` property.

So I went to the documentation to see the method&#39;s explanation below:

What does this even mean? What is the difference between enable state/clickable state and disabled state/not clickable state? I am trying to set the background color of a button in my app and I am unable to achieve the result that I want...

The color that I am trying to set is `holo_green_light(#ff99cc00)`. In order to do it, I am using `setColorFilter(0xff99cc00, PorterDuff.Mode.MULTIPLY);`

The color that I get is not the `holo_green_light` but a mix of lightgrey and `holo_green_light`.

I have tried using the `LightingColorFilter` without much success.

How to custom switch button?

I know how to make Material Design button with color fill:

    style=&quot;@style/Widget.AppCompat.Button.Colored&quot;

And no-bordered transparent button:

    style=&quot;@style/Widget.AppCompat.Button.Borderless.Colored&quot;

However, is there a way to make Material design bordered (transparent inside) button? Something like below?

I&#39;m following the tips from questions like [this][1] to create a button style like suggested on Material Design.

However, I need to change the corner radius and haven&#39;t been able to do so by inheriting `Widget.AppCompat.Button.Colored` style and setting the radius parameter.

How can I have the same style but with rounded corners?
