I&#39;m migrating from `ActionBar` to `Toolbar` in my application. 
But I don&#39;t know how to display and set click event on Back Arrow on `Toolbar` like I did on `Actionbar`.

With `ActionBar`, I call `mActionbar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true)`.
But there is no the similar method like this.

Has anyone ever faced this situation and somehow found a way to solve it?

Display Back Arrow on Toolbar

I am trying to implement the new [ActionBar](http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/actionbar.html) support library that was released by Google a couple days ago.  In the past, I have successfully implemented ActionBarSherlock without any issues using the same method listed on Google Developer&#39;s [Support Library Setup](http://developer.android.com/tools/support-library/setup.html) page - using the guide on how to include the resources (which is similar to how ActionBarSherlock did it). I have the library project loaded in to my own project as a library as well.

I can tell the library is loading fine. When, instead of extending Activity on my MainActivity.java, I changed it to extend ActionBarActivity (as per Google&#39;s instructions), no errors occur - and it imports correctly.

I even tried bypassing the style.xml file and adding `@style/Theme.AppCompat.Light` directly in to the AndroidManifest.xml for both `&lt;application&gt;` and `&lt;activity&gt;` with `android:theme=&quot;@style/ThemeAppCompat.Light&quot;` with all attempts resulting in the same error.

Now the issue is I cannot get it to change the theme, let alone even build without throwing an error.  Below is the error I am receiving, followed by the style.xml file I changed to use the new theme.

I have moderate experience working with Android apps and am running Eclipse with the latest version of the Support Libraries and SDK compiling with API 18 (Android 4.3).

I am using a custom actionbar view, and as you can see in the screenshot below, there is a blank gray space in the actionbar. I want to remove it.

What is the difference between [ActionBarSherlock][1] and [Action Bar Compatibility][2]

Fews days ago Google just released the ActionBar Compatibility that make me so confused. Is that the Action Bar Compatibility works same as the ActionBarSherlock and is the coding same? 

Example : Does [app icon to navigate &quot;up&quot;][3] or ActionBar.Tab supported in Action Bar Compatibility ?

Difference between ActionBarSherlock and ActionBar Compatibility

I wanted to know the difference between **android-support-v4.jar**
and **android-support-v7-appcompat.jar**. If I want to add appcompat Action Bar in my application do I need to add both *android-support-v7-appcompat.jar* and *android-support-v4.jar* or only *android-support-v7-appcompat.jar*.

Also, does *android-support-v13.jar* has appcompat?

MenuItemCompat.getActionView always returns null

I&#39;m using the new v7 appcompat library available starting from Android 4.3 (API level 18).

Regardless of what is specified in showAsAction for a menu item, it&#39;s not shown - it always creates the overflow menu icon, and puts even a single menu item under the menu.

Trying to add menu to an activity like this:

Creating a Preference Screen with support (v21) Toolbar

I&#39;m starting a new project that uses the `AppCompat/ActionBarCompat` in `v7` support library. I&#39;m trying to figure out how to use the `getSupportActionBar` from within a fragment. My activity that hosts the fragment extends `ActionBarActivity`, but I don&#39;t see a similar support class for Fragments.

From within my fragment

        public class CrimeFragment extends Fragment {
              //...
   
              getActivity().getSupportActionBar().setSubtitle(R.string.subtitle); // getSupportActionBar is not defined in the v4 version of Fragment

              //...
        }

The google page for using it (http://android-developers.blogspot.in/2013/08/actionbarcompat-and-io-2013-app-source.html) says there should be no changes for the `v4` fragment. Do I need to cast all my `getActivity()` calls to an `ActionBarActivity`? That seems like poor design.

I was able to change the background color by adding these lines of code to the theme:

The back icon **is not** the one i set with `setNavigationIcon()` ! Whatever drawable i give to the method the navigation icon is always the back arrow.

I have tried to remove the parent association in the manifest but the only effect is (obviously) to prevent the button to go back.


On contrary if i want the default back arrow icon and don&#39;t call `setNavigationIcon()` i don&#39;t have any icon at all.

**What is the correct way to handle the navigation icon in toolbar (custom and default) ?**

Toolbar navigation icon never set

I was using SupportActionBar with tabs and a custom ActionBar theme (created with http://jgilfelt.github.io/android-actionbarstylegenerator/), that show the tabs only when the user expands the search view.

I migrated from ActionBar to Toolbar. My app really needs to support API 9.

Is there a way to use this code to add the tabs back?:

If possible, how can I use my custom theme or style the toolbar?

The documentation says that this is deprecated and suggests using a different type of navigation.
But I don&#39;t know of any other components in Android that have the same functionality.

Use Tab with new ToolBar (AppCompat v7-21)

I would like to add the support actionbar to one of my activities, I previously had been using the theme.translucent with this activity but in order to make the support actionbar work I needed to inherit the Theme.AppCompat, I need to maintain a translucent theme in this activity but unfortunately there isnt a Theme.AppCompat.translucent that i can see by default, is there any way that this can be done?

Android v7 Toolbar button alignment

I&#39;m using the v7 appcompat 21 library to use the new Material styles on pre-Lollipop devices. My styles.xml looks like this:

I am trying to change the text color on the action bar. But no matter what I put for textColorPrimary or textColorPrimaryInverse, the color is always white. If I inherit from Theme.AppCompat, I can override &quot;textColorPrimary&quot;, and if I inherit from Theme.AppCompat.Light, I can override &quot;textColorPrimaryInverse&quot;. But neither work when using the Light.DarkActionBar theme.

I am definitely using the AppTheme because setting attributes like colorPrimary to change the actionbar background color works fine. I am not using any other resource qualifier style files.

I&#39;ve dug through the android styles files and can&#39;t seem to figure out what attribute to override. Any ideas? Is this an appcompat bug?

Change ActionBar title text color using Light.DarkActionBar theme in AppCompat 21

I have a relatively simple Android app with one `Activity` showing a list of items and another showing details of a selected item.  I start the list activity, which is my topmost activity (using `FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP` to clear the login activity from which this is called) with:

    Intent intent = new Intent(this, ListInstancesActivity.class);
    intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
    startActivity(intent);
    finish();

and from within that activity I act on an item being selected with:

    Intent detailIntent = new Intent(this, ShowInstanceActivity.class);
    detailIntent.putExtra(ShowInstanceFragment.ARG_ITEM_ID, id);
    startActivity(detailIntent);

All works fine, and if I use the softkey &#39;back&#39; button then I return to the `ListInstancesActivity` as I would expect.  However, if instead I press the back/up button on the action bar then it destroys and recreates the `ListInstancesActivity`.  This is bad, as it is relatively computationally expensive to do so.

How can I make the action bar behave in the same way as the softkey and just return to the previous activity rather than destroying it.

It should be noted that I&#39;m using the support library version of the actionbar.

ActionBar &#39;up&#39; button destroys parent activity, &#39;back&#39; does not

I am trying to convert my app to use the v21 AppCompat library, so I started to use Toolbar instead of ActionBar. In all my regular activities (which extend ActionBarActivity) everything is fine. but in my SettingsActivity which extends PreferenceActivity, and therefore I can&#39;t use the setSupportActionBar(actionbar) call I need to use a &quot;standalone&quot; toolbar. The toolbar shows up, but I can&#39;t figure out how could I add the &quot;home / up&quot; button to the toolbar.

I tried to add actionBarStyle and displayOptions to my theme as explained in https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14190713/show-up-back-button-on-android-nested-preferencescreen/16247111, but in other places people said that actionBarStyle won&#39;t be used when I use Toolbar, and they seem to be right.
