Data Driven Documents (d3.js) http://mbostock.github.com/d3/ is quite good in my experience as it scales up quite good; can easily handle 100 nodes (or more?) without any stall

We produce [mxGraph][1], it is a entirely client-side graph visualization library. We optimise precisely for this one domain, not just general drawing, so we&#39;ve quite a speed advantages that part-time projects in this field won&#39;t be able to implement.

[Canviz][1] is a pure Javascript renderer of the excellent [graphviz][2].  Graphviz is used on the server to generate the layout, but rather than generating an image it can be rendered with canviz on the client instead.

It is well known that Haskell-style typeclasses and ML-style modules offer different mechanisms for specifying *interfaces*. They are (possibly) equivalent in power, but in practice each has their own benefits and drawbacks.

Since I&#39;m a bit of an inclusionist when it comes to language features, my question is this: What are the primary theoretical difficulties with adding ML-style modules to Haskell? I&#39;m interested in answers along the following lines:

* What existing type system features interact poorly with ML-style modules? (An example of poor interaction is GADT and functional dependencies, even though fundeps are technically equivalent to associated types!)

* What things have to be given up on the compiler end in order to compile ML-style modules?

* How do ML style modules interact with type inference?

I&#39;m working on a project with Node.js and the server-side code is becoming large enough that I would like to split it off into multiple files.  It appears this has been done client-side for ages, development is done by inserting a `script` tag for each file and only for distribution is something like &quot;Make&quot; used to put everything together.  I realize there&#39;s no point in concatting all the server-side code so I&#39;m not asking how to do that.  The closest thing I can find to use is `require()`, however it doesn&#39;t behave quite like `script` does in the browser in that require&#39;d files do not share a common namespace.

Looking at some older Node.js projects, like [Shooter][1], it appears this was once not the case, that or I&#39;m missing something really simple in my code.  My require&#39;d files cannot access the global calling namespace at compile time nor run time.  Is there any simple way around this or are we forced to make all our require&#39;d JS files completely autonomous from the calling scope?

I am opening a child window for Facebook sharing this way:

Limit the size of a file upload (html input element)

Consider:

I understand how `!important` works. In this case the div will render red because now it has priority (`!important`). But I can&#39;t still figure out an appropriate situation to use it in. Is there an example where `!important` saves the day?

I need the text to be aligned in the center both vertically and horizontally.

I am using HighCharts for a line graph report. In this specific report I have been asked to Customize the colours of each series. The series will always stay the same. So for example:

By &quot;interactive&quot;, I meant I can drag-and-drop the nodes around and I need to be able to click on the nodes/vertices and have the library pass the nodes/vertices to my callbacks, which may add/remove nodes/vertices or display information (I cannot load the full graph at startup as the dataset is too large/complex; instead I&#39;ll be loading only the necessary slices of data depending on user inputs).

By Python, I meant the programming language [Python][2], the graphing library should have CPython binding. I have Python 2.7 and Python 3.1, but can downgrade to 2.6 if necessary. This language requirement is because the dataset I&#39;m working with only have Python binding.

The graphing library must support [directed graph](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed_graph) and be able to layout the nodes automatically. I need to put labels on the nodes.

Preferably, the layouting algorithm should place adjacent nodes near each other. It should be able to handle from 100-1000 nodes and about 300-4000 vertices reasonably in my 4 year old laptop (I typically start with around 100 nodes, but the number might expand depending on user input). Preferably it should be a library with not too many dependencies (except perhaps for Gnome). Open source is preferred.

I have already written a simple prototype of my program using Tkinter Canvas, but I need a more serious graphing library to expand the program. I&#39;ve looked at graphviz and matplotlib, but apparently they&#39;re only for working with static graphs and apparently would need significant amount of work to do interactive manipulations (correct me if I&#39;m wrong, I&#39;ve only looked at them briefly). I&#39;ve also tried generating the graph to an SVG file and using Inkscape to view it, but it&#39;s too slow and takes too much memory and because of the sheer number of vertices it becomes a tangled mess.

In his section on Graphs, he states:

The pros and cons of matrix and adjacency list representations are described in CLRS, but I haven&#39;t been able to find a resource that compares these to an object representation. 

Just by thinking about it, I can infer some of this myself, but I&#39;d like to make sure I haven&#39;t missed something important. If someone could describe this comprehensively, or point me to a resource which does so, I would greatly appreciate it.


Comparing object graph representation to adjacency list and matrix representations

I am in need of Java library for graphs that supports dynamic visualization. I need to have objects moving between the vertices and this has to be shown. 3D is not needed, a 2D representation will suffice.

I am currently using *JUNG* but it is very limited, it is more for static graphs from what I can tell.

I have looked at [this][1] question but *JGraphT* doesn&#39;t seem to do it either.

Java graph library for dynamic visualisation

I am the developer of some family tree software (written in C++ and Qt). I had no problems until one of my customers mailed me a bug report. The problem is that the customer has two children with their own daughter, and, as a result, he can&#39;t use my software because of errors.

Those errors are the result of my various assertions and invariants about the family graph being processed (for example, after walking a cycle, the program states that X can&#39;t be both father and grandfather of Y).

How can I resolve those errors without removing all data assertions?

I have a 3-dimensional numpy array.  I&#39;d like to display (in matplotlib) a nice 3D plot of an isosurface of this array (or more strictly, display an isosurface of the 3D scalar field defined by interpolating between the sample points).

matplotlib&#39;s mplot3D part provides nice 3D plot support, but (so far as I can see) its API doesn&#39;t have anything which will simply take a 3D array of scalar values and display an isosurface.  However, it does support displaying a collection of polygons, so presumably I could implement the marching cubes algorithm to generate such polygons.

It does seem quite likely that a scipy-friendly marching cubes has already been implemented somewhere and that I haven&#39;t found it, or that I&#39;m missing some easy way of doing this.  Alternatively I&#39;d welcome any pointers to other tools for visualising 3D array data easily usable from the Python/numpy/scipy world.

I&#39;d like to make the x-axis labels a bit more meaningful.

Firstly, the x-axis ticks here seem to be limited to five ticks. No matter what I do, I can&#39;t seem to change this - even if I add more xticklabels, it only uses the first five. I&#39;m not sure how Matplotlib calculates this, but I assume it&#39;s auto-calculated from the range/data?

**Is there some way I can increase the resolution of x-tick labels** - even to the point of one for each bar/bin?

(Ideally, I&#39;d also like the seconds to be reformatted in micro-seconds/milli-seconds, but that&#39;s a question for another day).

Secondly, I&#39;d like **each individual bar labeled** - with the actual number in that bin, as well as the percentage of the total of all bins.

The final output might look something like this:

I&#39;m an R/ggplot newbie. I would like to create a geom_line plot of a continuous variable time series and then add a layer composed of events. The continuous variable and its timestamps is stored in one data.frame, the events and their timestamps are stored in another data.frame. 

What I would _really_ like to do is something like the charts on finance.google.com. In those, the time series is stock-price and there are &quot;flags&quot; to indicate news-events. I&#39;m not actually plotting finance stuff, but the type of graph is similar. I am trying to plot visualizations of log file data. Here&#39;s an example of what I mean...

If advisable (?), I would like to use separate data.frames for each layer (one for continuous variable observations, another for events).

After some trial and error this is about as close as I can get. Here, I am using example data from data sets that come with ggplot. &quot;economics&quot; contains some time-series data that I&#39;d like to plot and &quot;presidential&quot; contains a few events (presidential elections).

Questions: 

 * This is OK for very sparse events, but if there&#39;s a cluster of them (as often happens in a log file), it gets messy. Is there some technique I can use to neatly display a bunch of events occurring in a short time interval? I was thinking of position_jitter, but it was really hard for me to get this far. google charts stacks these event &quot;flags&quot; on top of each other if there&#39;s a lot of them.

 * I actually don&#39;t like sticking the event data in the same scale as the continuous measurement display. I would prefer to put it in a facet_grid. The problem is that the facets all must be sourced from the same data.frame (not sure if that&#39;s true). If so, that also seems not ideal (or maybe I&#39;m just trying to avoid using reshape?)
