I prefer outputting my data into XML (using [Castor][1], [XStream][2] or [JAXB][3]), then transforming it using a XSLT stylesheet into [XSL-FO][4] and render that with [Apache FOP][5] into PDF. Worked so far for 10-page reports and 400-page manuals. I found this more flexible and stylable than generating PDFs in code using [iText][6].

I have used iText for genarating PDF&#39;s with a little bit of pain in the past. 

Or you can try using FOP: FOP is an XSL formatter written in Java. It is used in conjunction with an XSLT transformation engine to format XML documents into PDF.



Another alternative would be JasperReports: [JasperReports Library][1]. It uses iText itself and is more than a PDF library you asked for, but if it fits your needs I&#39;d go for it.

Simply put, it allows you to design reports that can be filled during runtime. If you use a [custom datasource](http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/api/net/sf/jasperreports/engine/JRDataSource.html), you might be able to integrate JasperReports easily into the existing system. It would save you the whole layouting troubles, e.g. when invoices span over more sites where each side should have a footer and so on.

Anyone can share a working example on how to call a simple C# library (actually its WPF) from python code? (I have tried using IronPython and had too much trouble with unsupported  CPython library my python code is using so I thought of trying the other way around and calling my C# code from Python).

Calling a C# library from python

What is best practice for handling the dropping of a temp table.  I have read that you should explicitly handle the drop and also that sql server should handle the drop....what is the correct method? I was always under the impression that you should do your own clean up of the temp tables you create in a sproc, etc.  But, then I found other bits that suggest otherwise.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  I am just concerned I am not following best practice with the temp tables I create.

I am now using java Desktop API to manipulate file explorer. 
I know how to open the file explorer but I don&#39;t know how to open it and highlight the specified file.

As we using the Chrome, after downloading files, we can choose &quot;show in folder&quot; to open the file explorer and highlight the downloaded file.

There is quite a lot of gui frameworks out there for java, but what is recognized as today&#39;s framework of choice?

The following is my understanding of the different frameworks, please correct me if im wrong. This is a very loosely defined set of questions, but i still think its valuable for anyone thinking of creating rich gui applications.

Is the very foundation of swing, it performs well but is lacking in advanced components. If you intend to create rich applications, AWT is probably not the way to go. However for smaller gui applications that doesn&#39;t require rich user interfaces. This might suit perfectly as it&#39;s a tried and proven framework.

**[Swing][2]**

Based on AWT as previously stated. In its infancy it was regarded as slow and buggy and caused IBM to create SWT for Eclipse. However with Java 5 (or 6?) Swing became the framework of choice for building new applications. Swing has a lot of rich components but are still lacking in some areas. One example being that there isn&#39;t a full featured TreeTable component which can do sorting and filtering/searching.

Created by IBM for Eclipse, they seemed to think that Swing was not suited for Eclipse at the time. By itself is pretty low-level, and it uses the platform&#39;s native widgets through JNI. It is not related to Swing and AWT at all. Their API is however somewhat clunky and not intuitive. They do have some advanced component&#39;s like a TreeTable. (but i don&#39;t think they support sorting and filtering out of the box). SWT uses some native bindings (through JNI?) and the rant on the internet is that this framework should not be used in today&#39;s projects. (why not?)

Based on Swing and it&#39;s mission is to create rich components for swing. Still under development. (not very active though.) Have a very nice set of components, like for example TreeTable. But the TreeTable does not support filtering and sorting as far as i know. It does however support searching with highlighting.

Say i wanted to create a desktop application today in Java which involves a lot of advanced components, what should i choose? And why?

Which one of these frameworks should be recognized as deprecated and which should be recognized as the frameworks of the distant future?

What is todays de-facto-standard framework and which tools do you utilize to create java gui applications?

I might regret asking this, but ill try it anyways:

C#/.Net is said to have a very good set of easy to use components which can be flexed in every direction possible. And after investigating different java frameworks to some extent i can&#39;t seem to say the same about Java. Why is this? *Why doesn&#39;t java (which is the most widely used programming language in the world) have the same set of GUI components?* 

Is it just that java has based their gui components at a much lower level, and it is possible to write all these advanced components that im looking for, but you have to do much if not all of the work yourself?

I&#39;m having a problem with a library that I am using. It might be the library or it might be me using it wrong!

Basically, when I do this (Timeout in milliseconds)

    _ignitedHttp.setConnectionTimeout(1);  // v short
    _ignitedHttp.setSocketTimeout(60000);  // 60 seconds

No timeout exception is generated and it works ok, however, when I do the following,

    _ignitedHttp.setConnectionTimeout(60000);  // 60 seconds
    _ignitedHttp.setSocketTimeout(1);          // v short

I get a Socket Exception.

So, my question is why can I not simulate a Connection Exception? Am I misunderstanding the difference between a socket and a connection time-out? The library is [here][1] (not officially released yet).

ConnectionTimeout versus SocketTimeout

Every single view in my Spring 3 app has a set of attributes they can rely on.  So the first line of every controller is something like:

    ControllerHelper.addDefaultModel(model, personManager, request);

In there I&#39;ll add

 - user object and full name retrieved from the database if person is logged in
 - set of variables which are typically set once (e.g. `imagesHost`)
 - set of languages a visitor can switch to
 - current language
 - some statistics (e.g. total # of people in our system)

This all allows each view to display the logged in user&#39;s name, easily reference an image location, a list of languages and some overall stats about the site.

So the question is, is the controller model object the best place to store all the data or is there a more convenient place which makes it just as easy for views to access this info?

And secondly, I&#39;d REALLY love not to have to have the `ControllerHelper` line above as the first line in every controller.  It&#39;s actually not always the first line, sometimes I first check if I need to redirect in that controller, because I don&#39;t want to waste resources filling the model for no reason.  Maybe a filter or annotation or some Spring callback mechanism could make sure the `ControllerHelper` code is called **after** the controller is finished but right **before** the view is rendered, skipping this if a redirect was returned?

Is there a way to get the stock Android browser to auto-open a PDF, Word or other typical file without having to go through the process of downloading the file and then getting the user to open the file from the Downloads app or the Notification bar?

We have a web application that has a lot of documents that we&#39;d like to include and not have to convert to HTML, but making the user download the file and manually open it is not easy to train users on.

On iOS, these files all display inline in the browser.  I&#39;d like a way to get the browser to auto-launch the files into Acrobat Reader or QuickOffice or whatever program the user has to display them.

Does anyone know a way to do that?  I know that Google Docs has some PDF viewing support, but people using our web app may not have public Internet access in all cases, and may be hitting on a local web server.

Contex Drawing + Pagination

I found this neat command to merge multiple PDF into one, using Ghostscript:

    gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=out.pdf in1.pdf in2.pdf

The resulting size is smaller than the combined size of the 2 PDFs.

Running the command with a single file as input still results to a smaller size output file.

Is there an option on Ghostscript to just copy the pages as they appear on merging without doing any compression?

If not, is it possible that the Ghostscript compression is so good that it will result in absolutely no loss in quality?

Is it possible to embed animated GIFs in PDFs?

I have a bash script that sets an environment variable an runs a command

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=my_path
    sqsub -np $1 /homedir/anotherdir/executable

Now I want to use python instead of bash, because I want to compute some of the arguments that I am passing to the command.

I have tried

    putenv(&quot;LD_LIBRARY_PATH&quot;, &quot;my_path&quot;)

and

    call(&quot;export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=my_path&quot;)

followed by

    call(&quot;sqsub -np &quot; + var1 + &quot;/homedir/anotherdir/executable&quot;)

but always the program gives up because LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not set.

How can I fix this?

Are the exported private keys gotten by executing `gpg --export-secret-keys` still encrypted and protected by their passphrase? This seems to be the case but I can&#39;t find anywhere that explicitly confirms this.

If the exported keys are still encrypted then is there anyway to get the pure, unencrypted private key (like you can for the public segment)?

Are exported private keys in GPG still encrypted?
