I am trying to install tmux in my Scientific Linux release 6.5 (Carbon) machine 

These are the steps I followed 

    wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/tmux/tmux-1.9.tar.gz

    tar xvzf tmux-1.9.tar.gz

  

    cd tmux-1.9

    ./configure

  At this step it&#39;s showing the error:

    configure: error: &quot;libevent not found&quot;   

To solve it I did the following:

    emacs /etc/yum.repos.d/pgdg-92-sl.repo 

 and added the following lines

    baseurl=http://yum.postgresql.org/9.2/redhat/rhel-6.4-$basearch
    enabled=1

Then did:

    yum install libevent  

It installed correctly

 Still the error configure: `error: &quot;libevent not found&quot;` is not solved

I&#39;ve been looking around and people say that putting 

    set -g mouse-mode on
should let you scroll through the terminal output when running tmux. However, after both putting this in my `~/.tmux.conf` file and saying `tmux set -g mouse-mode on` when in a tmux session, nothing changes. When I scroll I still get outside of tmux like scrolling in vim with default settings.

Anyone know why this is?

I know that after I call `(start-server)` inside an existing Emacs session I can then use `emacsclient -c` (on the same computer) to create new frames that connect into that server, so that each new frame created by `emacsclient` has access to the same set of shared state (e.g. buffers).

Most of the documentation I&#39;ve found focuses on the &quot;give me fast access to my local Emacs&quot; use case, and so there are two things that I haven&#39;t seen any details of yet:

1. Can `emacsclient -c` access Emacs servers started by _other_ users, or is it hard-wired to detect only sessions started by my own user?

1. Does Emacs server (directly or indirectly) support remote connections?  That is, is there some way to set up Emacs (possibly involving SSH) that allows calls to `emacsclient -c` on _remote_ machines to have access to the _local_ state of my Emacs server?

(In case you haven&#39;t already guessed, what I&#39;d ultimately like to do is combine the two techniques above to provide rudimentary collaborative editing support.)

This is a real-world problem, so here&#39;s what I&#39;m working with:

 - The necessary functionality should be built into Emacs already (23.3.1, 64-bit).  I can stretch to Emacs extensions from the standard Ubuntu repositories, but I&#39;d prefer not to.  (Which I believe rules out _Rudel_, sadly.)
 - No new users or user spoofing.  Solutions should work with the existing set of user accounts, and users must not pretend to be other users (e.g. via `su` or `ssh`).

If it makes any difference, the machines are on a private LAN, have OpenSSH clients and servers installed (and running), and all users can connect to (their own account on) all machines, but they have no shared filesystem.

So, does anybody know whether Emacs server can

 * grant access to other users, or
 * provide remote access?

EDIT

As commented in rwb&#39;s answer, it&#39;s clear that the new windows being opened locally by running `emacsclient -c` are actually being created by the *remote* Emacs server process.  That is, `emacsclient` is simply triggering the relevant behaviour in the server.  This causes some issues with incorrect display settings, since the server does not normally have access to the local desktop (see below).  However, I can now connect in to a remote Emacs session if I use the following sequence of commands:

In one terminal, where `1.22.333.44` is the IP address of `remotehost`:

    ssh -t -X remotehost \
      &quot;emacs -nw --eval
       &#39;(progn (setq server-host \&quot;1.22.333.44\&quot; server-use-tcp t) (server-start))&#39;&quot;

Then in another (on the same machine):

    scp remotehost:.emacs.d/server/server /tmp/server-file
    DISPLAY=localhost:10 emacsclient -c -f /tmp/server-file

The `emacsclient` command causes the remote Emacs server (which it finds details of in `/tmp/server-file`) to open up a graphical Emacs window (on the local display) that shares state with the Emacs session on the remote host.  

Since the remote Emacs server was started via `ssh -X`, SSH provides it with access to my local display via a &quot;fake&quot; `:10` display.  The `DISPLAY=:10` passed to it (via `emacsclient`) thus causes a window to be opened on my local desktop.

Although the approach above does tick the &quot;Run Emacs server on remote machine, connect to it using `emacsclient` locally&quot; box, it&#39;s very limited.  In fact, it&#39;s not much different to running the server and clients all locally as a single user: the only difference is that the server is now remote, so has access to different system resources.

Unfortunately, launching via `ssh -X` is the only way I&#39;ve been able to successfully open a window on a different machine&#39;s X server:

 - Specifying a basic `DISPLAY=remote:0` gets nowhere (since Ubuntu X servers are started with the `-nolisten tcp` option).

 - Connecting via SSH and then using `DISPLAY=:0` also fails, but this time only due to lack of suitable authentication credentials.  (I believe that&#39;s the case, anyway: the error message cryptically says `No protocol specified` / `Can&#39;t open display`.)

I think that finding a way around the second problem would probably get me a good deal closer to a solution.

Having read the posts at http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/103350 (starting at the &#39;25 Oct 14:50&#39; post, about half way down) I&#39;m starting to wonder if this might be one of the rare things that Emacs cannot do (i.e. is impossible ;-) ).

However, if anyone does have a way to provide access to remote X displays without the permissions error above, I&#39;m still open to persuasion....

**TL;DR**

As pointed out by rwb&#39;s answer, my questions above about whether Emacs can grant remote access have got things backwards.  There&#39;s no real problem with Emacs granting access to other users (`server-use-tcp` and a suitable `server-file` take care of this): rather the problem is **how to allow a process on one machine to open new X windows on other users&#39; X displays** (specifically, the Emacs running `(start-server)` needs to open windows for users who ask it to via `emacsclient -c`).  That answer&#39;s beyond the scope of this question.


**Alternative solution**

As a workaround, we use the following:

 * machine0: `tmux -S /tmp/shared-tmux-socket new-session`
 * machine1..machineN: `ssh -t machine0 tmux -S /tmp/shared-tmux-socket attach`

with suitable file permissions on `/tmp/shared-tmux-socket`.

Then we run a text-mode Emacs in the shared terminal. :-)  This does raise some user-spoofing questions, but at least the host can see everything that the guests are doing.


Using Emacs server and emacsclient on other machines as other users

Normally, I can jump to a window in tmux using `Prefix-N`, where `N` is my window number.

Unfortunately, if `N` is number of like `10`, it will just jump to window `1`.

I&#39;m trying to a get a &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;tab&lt;/kbd&gt; and &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;shift&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;tab&lt;/kbd&gt; binding to work inside of a tmux session (I&#39;m also using PuTTY).

I already went through the pains of having to recompile PuTTY so it would send &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt; and &lt;kbd&gt;shift &lt;/kbd&gt; correctly. After using &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;v&lt;/kbd&gt;, and I&#39;m able to see that `^[[27;5;9~` and `^[[27;6;9~` are being sent for &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;tab&lt;/kbd&gt; and &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;shift&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;tab&lt;/kbd&gt;, respectively. Is there any way I can get these bound to next-window and previous-window inside of tmux?

After some research, I&#39;m thinking I might have to configure xterm to include those keycodes. Any idea how I would go about doing that?

So I found out I can retrieve infocmp and recompile it. I added

How to terminate a window in tmux?

I&#39;m running iterm2 and when I&#39;m in tmux mode the colorscheme I have set in vim does not show up. Only the color scheme I&#39;ve set in iterm. If I run vim from shell the colorscheme appears correct - its only when I&#39;m in tmux mode.

I&#39;ve tried setting `:colorscheme molokai` when in vim (see screenshot below) and it doesn&#39;t change - again, the default colorscheme for iterm2 remains.

This is what I used to do in tmux to copy-paste (using the mouse, the keyboard works differently and it is not what I am interested about):

 1. Select text with mouse, left-button pressed
 2. Paste text with middle-button

I have upgraded my OS, and this has gotten a new tmux version. I have not changed my `.tmux.conf` config file.

This is what I have to do with the current version of `tmux`, `1.6` (which comes pre-packaged in the latest crunchbang linux):

 1. Select text with mouse, left-button pressed **and** &lt;kbd&gt;shift&lt;/kbd&gt; key
 2. Paste text with middle-button
 3. Terminal gets blocked, a litte information area shows some numbers on the top right of the current pane (i.e. `[0/24]`, probably something related to how many characters have been pasted), which mean little to me and I do not need / want (edit: it seems `copy-mode` is entered automatically here)
 4. I have to press the &lt;kbd&gt;q&lt;/kbd&gt; key to get a functional terminal again.

This is too much hassle for something I do dozens of times a day. How to get the old mechanism working again?

I have ten or so servers that I connect to with SSH on a regular basis. Each has an entry in my local computer&#39;s `~/.ssh/config` file.

To avoid losing control of my running process when my Internet connection inevitably drops, I always work inside a `tmux` session. I would like a way to have tmux automatically connect every time an SSH connection is started, so I don&#39;t have to always type `tmux attach || tmux new` after I SSH in.

Unfortunately this isn&#39;t turning out to be as simple as I originally hoped.

 - I don&#39;t want to add any commands to the `~/.bashrc` on the servers because I only want it for SSH sessions, not local sessions.
 - Adding `tmux attach || tmux new` to the `~/.ssh/rc` on the servers simply results in the error `not a terminal` being thrown after connection, even when the `RequestTTY force` option is added to the line for that server in my local SSH config file.

On my local machine I&#39;ve got 3 node.js instances running simultaneously. Each has it&#39;s own pane in a tmux window called &quot;servers&quot;. The problem is that it&#39;s not that easy to figure out which node is running in which pane, &#39;cause their logs are similar. 

What I need is a title for every pane. As I got, tmux itself doesn&#39;t have the feature: it has only titles for windows and not for panes. Launching a separate tmux session inside every pane for every node.js instance looks like an overkill. 

So is there some small program that launches a command, wrapping its output with a specified status bar?

When tmux starts or opens a new window, it does not load my `.profile` or `.bashrc`.  I end up typing `. ~/.bashrc` every time.  Is there a way to make this happen automatically?

I am trying to find a nice way to restore the SSH agent when I reconnect a disconnected tmux session.

The cause seems to be that the SSH agent session changes but the environment variable from the tmux session is not updated.

How can I automate this, before attaching the session itself? Because the session I am attaching to does not always have a bash prompt, so I cannot afford to type something inside it. It has to be something to run before creating or attaching the tmux session.

I&#39;ve been a happy tmux user for a while now but there&#39;s one behaviour that&#39;s bugging me. When I switch panes using ^b-arrow, and then immediately press arrow-up (to get a command from history, for example), the window pane switches again. I understand this can be useful if you want to move through multiple panes quickly, but for me it&#39;s a pain in the backside since I keep ending up in panes I never meant to be in.

So, is there a way to set tmux so that the ^b-arrow command only switches pane *once* and ignores any following arrow key presses?

I just move from GNU screen to tmux, in screen when I hit `C-a`, then type `a` again can take me to the beginning of the line, I wonder if I stick with `C-a` in tmux how can I work around this?

If I set key bind of C-b to c-a in tmux how can I move the cursor to the beginning of the line?

I want to write a shell script that does this:

*  First, create a tmux session
*  Second, run a ruby script called &quot;run.rb&quot; INSIDE the tmux session

    tmux -2 attach-session -t foo

`~/.bin/pfoo`:

It all works... but when I `ctlr-c` in the first pane that is running the thin server, it stops the thin server and returns to the shell. However, the command is not in the history; i.e. if I hit the up key I don&#39;t get the `bundle exec thin start` command... I get some other command from my bash history. I&#39;m wondering if there&#39;s any way to arrange these scripts so that I get the commands in the bash history.

Also... I&#39;ve tried many combinations of `exec`, `exec $SHELL -s ...`, and `exec $SHELL -s ... -I` and I&#39;m not quite sure what is going on...

Can anyone help explain the general idea of what is going on with `tmux` and `bash` and `exec` here?

Bash scripts with tmux to launch a 4-paned window

I&#39;m having trouble getting tmux to display lines for borders.  They are being created with x and q.  It&#39;s a debian squeeze server and the locale is set to en_US UTF8. I also tried adding 
    
    # instructs tmux to expect UTF-8 sequences
    setw -g utf8 on
    set -g status-utf8 on

 lines to .tmux.conf.  Nothing seems to work.  I&#39;m not sure if it&#39;s a locale issue or not.  It displays correctly on other servers, but not the debian.  I appreciate any tips you could offer!  Thanks...

Tmux borders displayed as x q instead of lines?

Example: copy in one tmux pane (via vim), then switch to another pane (running another vim instance) and paste using the vim paste command. I know this can be done via tmux (using prefix+]) but it would be really handy if I can copy and paste using vim bindings since i&#39;m just switching between different panes running vim.


Any ideas?

Here&#39;s what&#39;s happening to me: I start tmux sessions using `tmux -L name1`, `tmux -L name2`; then I detatch them using &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;B&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;d&lt;/kbd&gt;. Then I try to get a list of the currently running sessions on my computer. However, when I run `tmux ls`, I get an error message: 

    failed to connect to server: Connection refused

Is this a bug? I&#39;m familiar with screen; I regard `screen -ls` as a very useful function since I might start a session and leave it running for weeks before the next time I attach to it. Because of this, the ability to list current running tmux sessions is quite important for me. Why does `tmux ls` return a &quot;connection refused&quot; error when I know tmux is running?

How to set up tmux so that it starts up with specified windows opened?

While using vim inside a tmux session I cannot yank or paste to the unnamed register. Going to a named register works fine, but unnamed never works.

Error is:

    E353: Nothing in register *

Without tmux, vim works fine using my current settings. How do I fix it so I can use &lt;kbd&gt;y&lt;/kbd&gt; then &lt;kbd&gt;p&lt;/kbd&gt; without errors and without specifying the register?

Fix Vim + Tmux yank/paste on unnamed register

How is the status bar is customized? I noticed in [this youtube video][3] (at 3:05 - image below), the status bar looks very different than the default one that I see after installing tmux on my Mac OS X.

In particular, I like how the middle of the status bar shows the current program and the left side shows the name of only the current session. In comparison, my setup shows the name of all of the sessions and doesn&#39;t show the current application (for the currently focused pane).

If anyone could show me a sample configuration that could do this or show me where I can find the customization rules, that would be great! Thanks!

tmux status bar configuration

Instead of having to type `tmux` every time, **how could I have `tmux` always be used for new session windows**?

So if I have no terminal windows open and then I open one, how can that first session be in `tmux`?

Seems like a `.bashrc` sort of thing perhaps?

How can I make TMUX be active whenever I start a new shell session?

On the tmux man page I found no reference to how it names keys.

For example, to send &lt;kbd&gt;ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt; + &lt;kbd&gt;r&lt;/kbd&gt; to tmux you would do:

    tmux send-keys C-r

and to send the &lt;kbd&gt;esc&lt;/kbd&gt; key you do

    tmux send-keys Escape

Is there a list which maps keyboard keys to how tmux sendkeys expects you to name them? I have a feeling that I missed a memo that its using *some-long-forgotten-program&#39;s* syntax for convenience.

Note, this is nothing to do with key bindings.

tmux send-keys syntax

following the suggestion in this Archlinux wiki, in the [page about tmux](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tmux) I remapped the command key prefix to `C-a`, to mimic GNU screen and to have something easier on the keyboard than `C-b`. So my .tmux.conf became this:

    set -g default-terminal &quot;screen-256color&quot;
    unbind C-b
    set -g prefix C-a
    set-window-option -g mode-keys vi
    bind h select-pane -L
    bind j select-pane -D
    bind k select-pane -U
    bind l select-pane -R

However, while in screen it was possible to use `C-a a` to jump to the beginning of line, this does not work any more in tmux. As a sidenote, I&#39;m using iTerm2 without the tmux integration.

Does anybody know how to solve this?

Howto go to beginning of line in tmux after remapping prefix to CTRL+A?

Standard TMUX is set to use ctrl-b + [up, down, left, right] when navigating between panes. 

I would like to make it so that I can use ctrl-b (or the prefix of my choice) + [h,j,k,l].

I thought I had done this with the following vi key in my `~/.tmux.conf` settings:

    set -g status-keys vi
    setw -g mode-keys vi

Yet this didn&#39;t seem to change anything (at least not what I was looking for). How can I get this to work. And yes my `.tmux.conf` is working properly. I can provide more info if needed.

Here is my full .tmux.conf after trying to get it to work:

    set -g status-keys vi
    setw -g mode-keys vi
    
    set -g prefix C-a
    unbind C-b
    bind C-a send-prefix

TMUX using HJKL to navigate panes

I&#39;m currently using tmux with xterm-256color $TERM variable. When in bash under tmux, pressing home/end would insert tilde characters (~). Outside of tmux the home/end keys work fine. 

Using cat and tput, I could see that there was a mismatch between the generated and expected sequences:

    $ cat -v # pressing home, then end
    ^[[1~^[[4~
    $ tput khome | cat -v; echo
    ^[OH
    $ tput kend | cat -v; echo
    ^[OF

To fix this, I decided to add the following to my .bashrc:

    if [[ -n &quot;$TMUX&quot; ]]; then
        bind &#39;&quot;\e[1~&quot;:&quot;\eOH&quot;&#39;
        bind &#39;&quot;\e[4~&quot;:&quot;\eOF&quot;&#39;
    fi

That fixed the problem for bash, however in other readline programs, such as within a REPL such as ipython, it still inserts a tilde for home/end. 

Why exactly is this a problem in the first place? Why is the generated sequence different when I&#39;m inside tmux vs outside it? How can fix this so that it&#39;s not an issue in any programs?

Home/End keys do not work in tmux

I would like to have tmux to automatically rename the window with the current working directory (cwd). As it is by default, it names the tab/window as the name of the current process, such as zsh or vim.

When I open a new window in tmux, the name is `reattach-to-use-namespace` and then it immediately switches to `zsh`.

I&#39;m on OS X 10.10.2, I use zshell, and I have tmux 1.9a.

To be clear, I don&#39;t want the entire path in the name of the window, just the current directory, so for example, I want `projectName`, not `/Users/username/Development/projectName`.

How to automatically rename tmux windows to the current directory

I was just adding tmux plugins to my .tmux.conf file to find out that one of the plugins (tmux-copycat I think) requires tmux 1.9.  When I start tmux I get the message `Error: Tmux version unsupported.  Please install tmux version 1.9 or greater!&quot;.  

So, what is the best way to upgrade tmux 1.8 to 1.9 on Ubuntu 14.04?

This is a bit of my tmux.conf

    cat tmux.conf
    ...
    bind a set-window-option synchronize-panes on
    bind b set-window-option synchronize-panes off

As you can see, sync and unsync options for panes are bound to two different keys. Is it possible to toggle sync/unsync with the same key?
