From what I know, PowerShell doesn&#39;t seem to have a built-in expression for the so-called [ternary operator][1].

For example, in the C language, which supports the ternary operator, I could write something like:

    &lt;condition&gt; ? &lt;condition-is-true&gt; : &lt;condition-is-false&gt;;

If that doesn&#39;t really exist in PowerShell, what would be the best way (i.e. easy to read and to maintain) to accomplish the same result?

This doesn&#39;t work under Clang or GCC, giving me :

Which means for it to compile I have to change the code to : 

    Base* obj = !bar ? static_cast&lt;Base*&gt;(foo) : bar;

Since an implicit cast to a `Base*` exists, what is preventing the compiler from doing so?

In other words, why does `Base* obj = foo;` work without a cast but using the `?:` operator doesn&#39;t? Is it because it&#39;s not clear that I want to use the `Base` part?

C#&#39;s null coalescing operator (??) in PHP

I went looking through `Raphael.js`&#39;s source code to find out how he converted RGB values to HSB. I found out the function he did it in and I was in the process of converting it to Python when I bumped into this nice triple-nested ternary operator:

    H = (C == 0 ? null :
        V == r ? (g - b) / C :
        V == g ? (b - r) / C + 2 :
                 (r - g) / C + 4
        );

It threw me for a loop because Python doesn&#39;t have the same kind of ternary operator that Javascript does. I spent a while looking over it and eventually hashed this somewhat saner code (using only if/else) out of it:

    if (C == 0) {
    	H = null;
    } else {
    	if(V == r) {
    		H = (g - b) / C;
    	} else {
    		if(V == g) {
    			H = (b - r) / C + 2;
    		} else {
    			H = (r - g) / C + 4;
    		}
    	}
    }

Was my interpretation correct? I&#39;m only asking this because if it isn&#39;t correct, I&#39;m faced with a *lot* of debugging. So. Did I &quot;get it&quot;?

A somewhat painful triple-nested ternary operator

I&#39;m just getting into Python and I really like the terseness of the syntax. However, is there an easier way of writing an `if`-`then`-`else` statement so it fits on one line?

For example:

    if count == N:
        count = 0
    else:
        count = N + 1

Is there a simpler way of writing this? I mean, in Objective-C I would write this as:

    count = count == N ? 0 : count + 1;

Is there something similar for Python?

Preparing for the Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 8 Programmer 1 exam, I came across the following paragraph about the ternary expression in the official Study Guide:

It says that only one of the two expressions is evaluated, demonstrating with the following example:

What I am stumbling across is the beginning of the paragraph (marked in yellow) where it says &quot;As of Java 7, ...&quot;. I tested the same code with Java 1.6 and I can&#39;t find a difference in the behavior. I expected Java 1.6 to evaluate both expressions just from the information given in the paragraph. Does anyone have an idea what they wanted to say with &quot;As of Java 7,  ...&quot;?

How to write a PHP ternary operator

I was wondering if there was a ternary operator (condition ? true-value : false-value) that could be used in a Django template.  I see there is a python one (true-value if condition else false-value) but I&#39;m unsure how to use that inside a Django template to display the html given by one of the values.  Any ideas?

Essentially I&#39;ve come across a scenario where i need to make use of an if statement inside a lambda function. What makes it difficult is that ideally it needs to be in a single line of code (if thats even possible?)

Normally, i would write this:

    T = 250

    if (T &gt; 200):
        rate = 200*exp(-T)
    else:
        rate = 400*exp(-T)

    return (rate)

However i need it to look like this:

    rate = lambda(T) : if (T&gt;200): return(200*exp(-T)); else: return(400*exp(-T))

I realize the easier thing to do would to take the decision making outside of the lambda functions, and then have a separate lambda function for each case, but its not really suitable here. The lambda functions are stored in an array and accessed when needed, with each array element corresponding to a particular &quot;rate&quot; so having two separate rows for the same &quot;rate&quot; would mess things up. Any help would be greatly appreciated, or if its not possible, some confirmation from others would be nice :)
