I need to generate a unique temporary file with a .csv extension.

What I do right now is 

    string filepath = System.IO.Path.GetTempFileName().Replace(&quot;.tmp&quot;, &quot;.csv&quot;);

However, this doesn&#39;t guarantee that my .csv file will be unique.

I know the chances I ever got a collision are very low (especially if you consider that I don&#39;t delete the .tmp files), but this code doesn&#39;t looks good to me.

Of course I could manually generate random file names until I eventually find a unique one (which shouldn&#39;t be a problem), but I&#39;m curious to know if others have found a nice way to deal with this problem.

Why does vim create `&lt;filename&gt;~` files? Is there a way to disable that? 

If it&#39;s for backup (or something), I use git for that.

Also, these `.&lt;filename.with.path.hints&gt;.swp` files too.

* Name should be unique, even under potential race conditions (e.g. another Thread calls the same func at the same time, or another process runs this code simultaneously)
* File should be private, even under potential race conditions (e.g. another user tries to chmod file at high rate)
* I can tell it to delete the file, without me having to do a generic delete, and risk deleting the wrong file
* Ideally, should ensure file is deleted, even if exception is thrown before I get the chance to
* File should default to a sane location (e.g. the JVM specified tmp dir, defaulting to the system temp dir)

Calling `tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile()` returns a file handle after actual file creation.  

Is there a way to get a filename only? I tried this:

After going through and cleaning my disk with old things that I didn&#39;t need anymore, I came across the `iOS&#160;DeviceSupport` folder in `~/Library/Developer/Xcode` which was taking nearly 20&#160;GB.

As long as I have the version I use for testing, can I delete the older/unused versions without breaking anything?

If I do not explicity call the `delete()` method, when will the file be deleted?

As an intuition, it might be when the JVM terminates, or _earlier_ (by the Garbage Collector), or _later_ (by some Operating System sweeping process).

I am creating temporary files from a bash script. I am deleting them at the end of the processing, but since the script is running for quite a long time, if I kill it or simply CTRL-C during the run, the temp files are not deleted.  
Is there a way I can catch those events and clean-up the files before the execution ends?

Also, is there some kind of best practice for the naming and location of those temp files?  
I&#39;m currently not sure between using:

    TMP1=`mktemp -p /tmp`
    TMP2=`mktemp -p /tmp`
    ...

and

    TMP1=/tmp/`basename $0`1.$$

    ...

Removing created temp files in unexpected bash exit

I&#39;m using an android notification to alert the user once a service is finished (success or failure), and I want to delete local files once the process is done.

My problem is that in the event of failure - I want to let the user a &quot;retry&quot; option. and if he chooses not to retry and to dismiss the notification I want to delete local files saved for the process purposes (images...).

I&#39;m working on a Python script that needs to create about 50 distinct temporary files, which are all appended frequently during the course of the script and merged at the end. I&#39;m sure that the `tempfile` module can do what I need, but I haven&#39;t been able to figure out how from reading the documentation.

I want to use temporary files--as opposed to variables--to conserve system memory, as these data chunks grow large as the script processes tens of thousands of other files.

The following chunk of code is the hack I&#39;m currently using to create these files (untemporarily) in an untemporary directory:

I think what I need is `tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile()`. According to the [documentation](http://docs.python.org/release/3.1.5/library/tempfile.html):

Unfortunately, I don&#39;t understand what that means. I just need to be able to call each file again later when I run across its corresponding &quot;item&quot; again in the files I&#39;m processing. but I am unable to open this file and see its contents in notepad or similar application. Is there any way to achieve this? Why cant I do something like:

I&#39;m writing a Python script that needs to write some data to a temporary file, then create a subprocess running a C++ program that will read the temporary file.  I&#39;m trying to use [`NamedTemporaryFile`](http://docs.python.org/2/library/tempfile.html#tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile) for this, but according to the docs,

&gt; Whether the name can be used to open the file a second time, while the named temporary file is still open, varies across platforms (it can be so used on Unix; it cannot on Windows NT or later).

And indeed, on Windows if I flush the temporary file after writing, but don&#39;t close it until I want it to go away, the subprocess isn&#39;t able to open it for reading.

I&#39;m working around this by creating the file with `delete=False`, closing it before spawning the subprocess, and then manually deleting it once I&#39;m done:

    fileTemp = tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile(delete = False)
    try:
        fileTemp.write(someStuff)
        fileTemp.close()
        # ...run the subprocess and wait for it to complete...
    finally:
        os.remove(fileTemp.name)

This seems inelegant.  Is there a better way to do this?  Perhaps a way to open up the permissions on the temporary file so the subprocess can get at it?
