I have a project in which I have to change the mode of files with `chmod` to 777 while developing, but which should not change in the main repo. 

Git picks up on `chmod -R 777 .` and marks all files as changed. Is there a way to make Git ignore mode changes that have been made to files?

My issue is that I have my `.gitignore` set to ignore `*.dll` and `*.pdb`.  I can do a `git add -f bar.dll` to force the addition of the ignored file which is ok, the problem is I can not figure out to list what files exist that are ignored.

I want to list the ignored files to make sure that I don&#39;t forget to add them.

I have read the man page on `git ls-files` and can not make it work. It seems to me that `git ls-files --exclude-standard -i` should do what I want.  What am I missing?

I have a lot of projects in my **.Net** solution. I would like to exclude all &quot;bin/Debug&quot; and &quot;bin/Release&quot; folders (and their contents), but still include the &quot;bin&quot; folder itself and any dll&#39;s contained therein.

`.gitignore` with &quot;bin/&quot; ignores &quot;**Debug**&quot; and &quot;**Release**&quot; folders, but also any dll&#39;s contained in the &quot;bin&quot; folder.

`bin/Debug` or `bin/Release` in the `.gitignore` file does not exclude the directories unless I fully qualify the ignore pattern as `Solution/Project/bin/Debug` - which I don&#39;t want to do as I will need to include this full pattern for each project in my solution, as well as add it for any new projects added.

Any suggestions?

I have a repo called `myrepo` on the remote `beanstalk` server.

I cloned it to my local machine. Created two additional branches: `staging` and `dev`.
Pushed these branches to remote as well.

Now:

     staging ==&gt; Pushes to  `staging` ==&gt; deployed to `staging`

I have a file called `config.xml` which is different on each branch.

I want to ignore this file only during merges. But I want this to be included when I checkout or commit from/to the repo branch.

The reason I want this is, we have a deploy script that pulls (checkout) the specific branch and deploys on the respective servers. So we need `config.xml` file of that specific branch go into the specific server as indicated above when deployed.

I guess `.gitignore` wont work. What are the other options? Note that the ignored file should be part of checkout and commit, which is important. it should be ignored only during merges.

Git - Ignore files during merge

If I have a working copy of a Subversion repository, is there a way to delete all unversioned or ignored files in that working copy with a single command or tool?  Essentially, I&#39;m looking for the SVN analogue to [`git clean`][1].

Either a command line or GUI solution (for TortoiseSVN) would be acceptable.

I am a new user to `git` and I am starting a new project. I have a bunch of dot files that I would like to ignore. Is there an ignore command for `git` like there is for `svn`?

Is this possible? In git I just put

I sometimes use the feature &#39;Reconcile Offline Work...&#39; found in Perforce&#39;s P4V IDE to sync up any files that I have been working on while disconnected from the P4 depot. It launches another window that performs a &#39;Folder Diff&#39;.

I have files I never want to check in to source control (like ones found in bin folder such as DLLs, code generated output, etc.) Is there a way to filter those files/folders out from appearing as &quot;new&quot; that might be added. Ignore new commits for git submodule

I&#39;m looking for a way to &#39;hide&#39; minor changes made to a few files in Git, such that they will not show up in git status until a different change is made to those files.

Example: I have a java file where the only change made is the removal of an unused import (a contributor forgot to run an organize imports before committing). Now I have removed that import and the change (obviously) shows up in git. Since I have no other change to make to that file, I don&#39;t really like committing the file as part of another (unrelated) change or committing this change stand-alone. Sure, I could revert the change and only applying it whenever I will have to make changes to that file, but I could &quot;risk&quot; forgetting it. 

Does a command exists for such a task? It would work somewhat like the assume-unchanged command but in a not permanent way. 

What would be the proper way to resolve this if no such command is available?

Git - Temporarily ignore trivial changes to files

I&#39;m trying to get Mercurial to ignore a configuration file, but I&#39;m failing to get it working.

I have created a repository on my server with `hg init` and cloned that repository to my computer.  I then want to be able to edit the configurationj file but not commit those changes back to the server.

I have tried creating a `.hgignore` in the root of my clone, but Mercurial flags the file with a `?` and whether I commit it or not it still continues to log my configuration changes.

Am I creating the `.hgignore` file in the wrong place, does this file need to be commited? Does it need to be created before I init the repository on the server?

How to I add something to the `.gitignore` so that the match is not recursive?

For example, I wish to ignore the directory `foo` and the file `bar.txt` in the current directory, but not any that exist in subdirectories.

I have tried this for my `.gitignore` file:

    foo/
    bar.txt

But unfortunately git applies this recursively, so that `otherdir/bar.txt` and `otherdir/foo/` also get ignored, which is not what I want.

(Is there a command in git that shows me all ignored files, and reference the `.gitignore` file that is responsible for the file being ignored?  This would be useful for debugging.)

After installing and using Visual Studio 2010, I&#39;m seeing some newer file types (at least with C++ projects ... don&#39;t know about the other types) as compared to 2008.  e.g. .sdf, .opensdf, which I guess are the replacement for ncb files with Intellisense info stored in SQL Server Compact files?  I also notice .log files are generated, which appear to be build logs.

Given this, what&#39;s safe to add to my global ignore pattern?  Off the bat, I&#39;d assume .sdf, .opensdf, but what else?

I solved the issues by using:

    &gt;git config --global core.excludesfile c:\git\ignore_files.txt

and putting *.pyc in `c:\git\ignore_files.txt`

git, don&#39;t show me *.pyc in the list of untracked files!

I have a file in a git repository that has a local change on it. I want to have git ignore the local change forever, but not the file. In particular,

  - If the file isn&#39;t touched besides this change, `git add .` should never stage it.
  - Likewise, `git commit -a` shouldn&#39;t commit it.
  - If I ever make an additional change to the file, I should be able to stage and commit that change - but the change I&#39;m ignoring should *not* be staged and committed.

Is there a way to do this? Doing some research, I read about &quot;smudge/clean cycles,&quot; where, if I read correctly,

  1. the file would be marked as unchanged,
  2. the change I made would be overwritten when I checkout,
  3. and then a script would automatically reapply the change and then mark the file as unchanged again.

I am very new to git and scripting, though (I&#39;m an intern with C# and Java experience), so if that&#39;s what I need to do, can you please post detailed directions or a link to a tutorial on how to set a smudge/clean cycle up?

**Background:** I want my working branch to be out of sync with the trunk. There is a low priority bug that only affects development machines, so rather than fix it, we&#39;re just commenting out the offending code. Obviously, we don&#39;t want this code to be removed from production, where it works just fine.

Ignore specific changes to a file in git, but not the entire file

Unlike Netbeans, in Jetbrains IDEs, the setting files related to user and team are mixed in the same folder that makes it tricky when you need to push them to git. 

There is a number of sample git ignore files for these IDEs and https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/206544839 page on git site. 

However, after using them for a months we figure out that it is safer and actually more convenient to do the reverse. I mean ignoring all `.idea` files and adding only team-related settings explicitly. (instead of adding all and ignoring some). 

The main thing that can be shared among developers is code style configs. So, by using IDE auto-reformatting option all the team will follow a consistent style. 

Besides that, the question is which other files are recommended to be included and not ignored? Why?

Is it possible to ignore changes to a file in subversion locally on one client only, without propagating the ignore to the whole repository?

The particular problem I&#39;m dealing with is that I&#39;ve checked out a project and modified a bunch of files including the Makefile, which is already part of the repository. Now the environment I&#39;m working on is different from the rest of the group, and I want the changes to the Makefiles to remain local on my machine and not be committed.

I have a PHP project set up in Eclipse with SVN support. Now, Eclipse adds its project files .buildpath and .project to the project and Subclipse wants to add it to the repository.

Now I could just use svn:ignore to let SVN ignore the files, but that&#39;s not an option for various reasons. So, is there a way to make Eclipse and Subclipse ignore the files (which it should anyway)?
