I&#39;ve been designing an application, based on .NET/Mono framework, which should make an heavy use of the *shortest-path in a graph* theories and I would like to use a native solution to traverse the nodes of the graph, instead of implementing surrogate solutions which would be hardly maintainable and would massively affect performances.

I&#39;ve found an application which would be perfect for my scope: **neo4j**.

Unfortunately, this application is purely written in Java code and it&#39;s not portable to .NET, because of the massive differences between the two architectures.

Is anyone out there knows if is it there any port of neo4j or a similar solution for .NET?

Graph database for .NET

Has anyone used Mono, the open source .NET implementation on a large or medium sized project? I&#39;m wondering if it&#39;s ready for real world, production environments. Is it stable, fast, compatible, ... enough to use? Does it take a lot of effort to port projects to the Mono runtime, or is it really, _really_ compatible enough to just take of and run already written code for Microsoft&#39;s runtime?

Is Mono ready for prime time?

I&#39;ve been looking at [Roslyn][1] for quite some time now, and I&#39;m curious and excited about it. One thing I noticed is that they mentioned that the compiler is re-written in managed code. This raises the question of whether Roslyn is able to run on non-.NET virtual machines, such as [Mono][2].

I would *really* love to embed C# scripting using Roslyn in my video games, and to use many of their other features in my applications, but I&#39;m wondering if using Roslyn will break the ability for it to run on Mono.

Has anyone tried running Roslyn on Mono? Is it possible? Why or why not?

To clarify, I&#39;m interested in both whether the managed assembly can run on Mono, and whether it can generate assemblies that mono can run.

Is Roslyn cross platform?

I&#39;m trying to get the SHA1 fingerprint so I can get an Google API key.
Im in the following directory:

Then I execute the command from the google site :

Someone told me that he wanted it to be &quot;in Mono&quot;, but I don&#39;t know what that means. I know I want to use the .NET Core 1.0 with the technologies I listed above. He also said he wanted to use &quot;fast CGI&quot;. I don&#39;t know what that means either.

Can you help me make sense of all these terms and if my expectations are realistic?

.NET Core vs Mono

I&#39;m trying to run NuGet on Linux (Ubuntu 12). I have Mono 3.0.6 (compiled from source).

The error is due to some certificate (the nuget.org one most likely) not being trusted, I gather. This [blog post has more details](http://monomvc.wordpress.com/2012/03/06/nuget-on-mono/).

So I&#39;ve run:

    $ mozroots --import --sync
    $ certmgr -ssl https://go.microsoft.com
    $ certmgr -ssl https://nugetgallery.blob.core.windows.net
    $ certmgr -ssl https://nuget.org

... to no avail.

NuGet Version is 2.3.0.0 (although I started out with some older version that also did not work either).

How can I fix this error?

I&#39;m trying to write a Mono C# daemon for linux.

I&#39;d like to do a starts and stops of it when its done processing instead of just killing the process.

Does anyone have any examples of this?

Edit: I figured out how to use start-stop-daemon --background in debian, so I think I&#39;ll just use that for now.

Edit: I&#39;m implementing this in java as well and they have this nice addShutdownHook that catches terminating the app. I need to spend a little more time sorting out the dependencies for mono service, or find a way to catch app termination. 

There is the SessionEnd event, but thats only available for services and not console apps

After sitting through a session today on Mono at a local .Net event, the use of MonoTouch was &#39;touched&#39; upon as an alternative for iPhone development.  Being very comfortable in C# and .Net, it seems like an appealing option, despite some of the quirkiness of the Mono stack.  However, since MonoTouch costs $400, I&#39;m somewhat torn on if this is the way to go for iPhone development.

I lack the overview over both alternatives but I have pretty much freedom of choice for my next project. I&#39;m looking for hard technical facts in the areas of

  - performance (for example, I&#39;m told Java is good for threading, and I hear the runtime code optimization has become very good recently for .NET)
  - &lt;i&gt;real world&lt;/i&gt; portability (it&#39;s both meant to be portable, what&#39;s Catch-22 for each?)
  - tool availability ([CI][1], build automation, debugging, IDE)

I am especially looking for what you actually experienced in your own work rather than the things I could google. My application would be a back-end service processing large amounts of data from time series.

My main target platform would be Linux.

*To phrase my question more adequately, I am interested in the whole package (3rd party libraries etc.), not just the language. For libraries, that probably boils down to the question &quot;how much less libraries are there for Mono than for Java&quot;?*

FYI, I have since chosen Java for this project, because it seemed just more battle-worn on the portability side and it&#39;s been around for a while on older systems, too. Is .NET/Mono or Java the better choice for cross-platform development?

&lt;sub&gt;*I tried asking this on the gallio-users list, but the question failed to appear (Google Groups says the post was successful). I suppose the list might be moderated by someone who does not read his email very often :-) Seeing as SO has tags for both Gallio and MbUnit, I thought it was worth asking here.*&lt;/sub&gt;

I see the `MbUnit` front page mentions that they are keen on maintaining Mono-compatibility. There is also a &gt;1-year [old post on gallio-users][1] saying that it does not work under Linux

The project I want to test compiles fine under Mono if I remove the `Parallelizable` attribute. I can launch the `Gallio` control panel under Linux, but not Icarus or Echo.

Is there any way of running `MbUnit` tests under Linux? Something that uses the command line (like `Gallio.Echo`) and does not need Monodevelop would be especially helpful.

MbUnit under Linux, used within an F# project?

I have a really strange problem with `WebRequest` in a `ServiceStack` web application (hosted by XSP on Mono).
It seems that the registration of request modules works in a very strange way; I am using `WebRequest` to create an HTTP request, and it is failing because it was not able to find a creator for that &quot;prefix&quot; (HTTP).

The exception I am seeing is `NotSupportedException`, and I was able to track it to the fact that no creator is registered for the HTTP prefix (I am hitting https://github.com/mono/mono/blob/master/mcs/class/System/System.Net/WebRequest.cs, around line 479)

**EDIT:** more details: `NotSupportedException` is thrown by `WebRequest.GetCreator`, which uses the URL prefix as a key to choose which creator to return; in my case, a `HttpRequestCreator`. The exception is thrown because there is no creator registered for the &quot;HTTP&quot; prefix (actually, there are no creators at all).

So I searched around a little bit, dug into Mono sources, and found that modules are (or should be) added to the `webRequestModules` section of `system.web` in one of the various _*.config_ files.

I looked at my _machine.config_ file, and there it is:

    System.Net.HttpRequestCreator, System, Version=4.0.0.0
Looking at [WebRequest Mono sources](https://github.com/mono/mono/blob/master/mcs/class/System/System.Net/WebRequest.cs) 
it seems that prefixes are added from configuration(s) inside the class static constructor (not a good choice, IMHO, but still.. it should work).

To test it, I tried to add an `HttpRequestCreator` to `system.net/webRequestModules` in my `web.config`; this is loaded by XSP/Mono and results in a duplicate key exception (which is expected since `HttpRequestCreator` should be already loaded, as it is already present in _machine.config_).

**Even stranger:** if I add a mock handler for Http, like this:

    bool res = System.Net.WebRequest.RegisterPrefix (&quot;http&quot;, new MyHttpRequestCreator ());
    Debug.Assert (res == false);

The assertion sometimes pass... sometimes not!
(`RegisterPrefix` returns &quot;false&quot; if a creator for the same prefix is already registered; I expect it always to return false, but this is not the case! Again, it is completely random)

When the registration &quot;fails&quot; (i.e., returns false because an &quot;HTTP&quot; prefix is already registered), then the `WebRequest` can create requests for HTTP. It is as if calling `RegisterPrefix` &quot;wakes up&quot; the static constructor and let it run.

**I am perplexed**: it seems like a race condition in the execution of the static constructor of `WebRequest`, but this does not make sense (the runtime protects static constructors with a lock, IIRC)

What am I missing?
How could I solve or work around this problem?
Is it my fault (misunderstanding or missing something), or does it look like a Mono bug, so should I submit it?

I&#39;m trying to create a DialogFragment using my own Layout. 

I&#39;ve seen a couple different approaches.  Sometimes the layout is set in OnCreateDialog like this:
(I&#39;m using Mono but I&#39;ve gotten somewhat used to Java)

This first approach works for me... until I want to use `findViewByID.`
so after a bit of googling I tried the second approach which involves overriding `OnCreateView`

So I commented out two lines of `OnCreateDialog` that set the Layout and then added this:

For a developer with a Java background, I am interested in exploring software development using the ASP.NET tools/platform as well. 

Java web applications (.jsp and servlets) can run on many server platforms.

**Question**: Will a .NET web application be able to run in a Linux based server? Considering the scenario of not being able to use a Windows server for hosting a web app.

After a few years with Ubuntu, my main OS right now is Windows again. But it&#39;s not impossible that I could switch to Mac.

Right now I have a bit of experience with Qt and no experience with Xamarin.
With Qt you can develop *on* Windows, Linux, and Mac and *for* Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, ... They are pretty clear about that.

Since Xamarin is free and open source now and I still don&#39;t have much experience in Qt, I&#39;m considering trying out Xamarin for cross platform development instead of Qt.

Not being able to release my software for Linux would be a deal breaker for me. Being able to develop on Linux would be nice, but is optional.
But after all my Google research, I could only find information and people asking for support to develop *on* Linux and not *for* Linux.

As far as I know, this shouldn&#39;t be a problem with Mono alone. But as far as I know Xamarin &gt; Mono and I don&#39;t get everything in Mono I could get in Xamarin.

I&#39;m also not sure how well-supported Mono will be in the future. For me it looks like Xamarin is much more important for Microsoft than Mono itself.

I&#39;m not sure if it&#39;s even possible, since Xamarin is based on Mono, but is it possible that Microsoft will at some point decide not to support Mono with .NET compatibility in the same way as Xamarin, or even cancel Mono as standalone completely?

So I&#39;m looking for one single framework for all desktop and mobile platforms I can rely on, and I want to know if Xamarin and/or Mono and and/or Xamarin + Mono could be an alternative to Qt before I go deeper into any of those solutions.

I have a variable which I am using to represent state. It can be read and written to from multiple threads.

I am using `Interlocked.Exchange` and `Interlocked.CompareExchange` to change it. However I am reading it from multiple threads.

I know that `volatile` can be used to make sure the variable is not cached locally but always reads directly from memory.

However if I set the variable to volatile then it generates a warning about using volatile and passing using ref to the Interlocked methods.

I want to ensure that each thread is reading the most recent value of the variable and not some cached version, but I can&#39;t use volatile.

There is a `Interlocked.Read`  but it is for 64 bit types and is not available on the compact framework. The documentation for it says that it is not needed for 32 bit types as they are already performed in a single operation.

There are statements made across the internet that you don&#39;t need volatile if you are using the Interlocked methods for all your access. However you can&#39;t read a 32 bit variable using the Interlocked methods, so there is no way you can use Interlocked methods for all your access.

Is there some way to accomplish the thread safe read and write of my variable without using lock?

I&#39;ve seen [a lot of talk about running Mono/.NET code on the Raspberry Pi][1]. Has there been any success in actually running any Mono code on a Raspberry Pi?

On their site, they list several Linux distributions that work on the device and some of these distributions include Mono. However, none detail whether Mono works on it.

Mono on Raspberry Pi

I&#39;ve seen there are a few of them.  [opencvdotnet][1], [SharperCV][2], [EmguCV][3], [One on Code Project][4].  

Does anyone have any experience with any of these?  I played around with the one on Code Project for a bit, but as soon as I tried to do anything complicated I got some nasty uncatchable exceptions (i.e. Msgbox exceptions).  Cross platform (supports Mono) would be best.

I&#39;m making a simple REST client to use in my C# applications. In .net on Windows It works great with http:// and https:// connections. In mono 2.6.7 (Also tested with 2.8 with the same results) on Ubuntu 10.10 only http:// works. https:// connections throw up this exception on the request.GetResponse() method:

Many people here are probably familiar with one of [Joel Spolsky][k] most popular blog posts, [Please Sir, May I Have a Linker][1], where he cries out for a way to remove dependencies on the .NET framework so a stand-alone application can be developed and sold.

[Jason Zander][2] of the Visual Studio development team, at the time, replied [with his views on the topic][3], arguing that the topic is somewhat moot - the ability to fix security problems in the runtime (among other points) was their chief concern.  Overall, the small overhead was worth it.

Fast forward to 2009.  There&#39;s a few groups out there now claiming to have C# linkers.  (Jason Zander even said himself that it wouldn&#39;t take much to implement one.)  Instead of the cute, dozen-so meg download of .NET 1.0, we now have a massive 200-300 mb cross-platform complete .NET 3.5 installer that contains versions of .NET for x86, x64, and ia64.  Microsoft&#39;s suggestions to decrease the runtime size include:

 * Unpack the redistributable, remove the target platforms you don&#39;t want, and put it back together
 * Use the web bootstrapper that only downloads the libraries for your platform
 * Use the Client Profile installer (new as of late 2008) which has limited libraries and only works for x86

To make matters worse, as I understand it (please correct me if I&#39;m wrong) the client profile don&#39;t even register with windows as having .NET 3.5 installed.  This means if multiple .NET 3.5 client applications are installed on the computer, none will see each other and the runtime will be re-installed again and again!

I really don&#39;t know what Microsoft is thinking here.  Even assuming the worst case install will be for one target platform (eg, x64) and only those libraries need to be included, you&#39;re still looking at upwards of 60 mb overhead on your app.  Even one of the most well known .NET apps, Paint.NET, was fraught with [Difficulties installing the application because of the massive .NET dependencies.][paint]  If THEY have problems distributing a free app, what about the rest of the world?  In the end, they had to [Make a bootstrapper that installed Microsoft Installer 3.1, the .NET runtime bootstrapper, and all their other dependent libraires][paint2] before they could install their own application.

So how about it.  A linker.  Do any good ones exist - or a tool that simply makes it possible to build a C# application without requiring that the user install the massive .NET runtime?

Update: so, it looks like there&#39;s a couple of options:

Mono:

 * [Mono has its own linker][mono].  From the answer below, it looks like it works pretty well.

.NET:

 * [Xenocode][xenocode] seems to be one that&#39;s available and works.
 * [Thinstall][thinstall] is another that was recommended, and it&#39;s by VMware.
 * [There&#39;s another linker by Remotesoft][remotesoft].  They bill it as an &#39;obfuscator&#39;.  Any thoughts there?
 * [Found another by Rustemsoft called Skater .NET Obfuscator][skatepro].  Anyone familiar with them?
 * [ILmerge by Microsoft was also suggested][ilmerge]; this looks like it only performs part of the task (ie, merging libraries, not stripping out unused bits).

It looks like the Mono tools are getting use; how about the .NET based tools?  Any other experience with them, or are we just going to have to wait for Microsoft to push it 3.5 out to everyone?  I shudder to think how long it&#39;ll take for .NET 4.0 to be put out...

The State of Linkers for .NET apps (aka &quot;Please Sir, May I have a Linker&quot; 2009 edition)

What are my options?  I tried MonoDevelop over a year ago but it was extremely buggy.  Is the latest version a stable development environment?

I would like to run an external command line program from my Mono/.NET app. 
For example, I would like to run **mencoder**. Is it possible:

   1. To get the command line shell output, and write it on my text box?
   2. To get the numerical value to show a progress bar with time elapsed?

I have a simple .net command line tool written and compiled under Windows, using .net 3.5SP1.  I would like to run it on Linux using Mono.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and installed Mono Runtime using the Ubuntu software center.  If I try to start my app in the terminal by doing:

    mono MyApp.exe

I get the error:
&gt; The assembly mscorlib.dll was not found or could not be loaded.  It should have been installed in the &#39;usr/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll&#39;.

If I navigate to that location, I see that it does not exist.  However, there is `usr/lib/mono/4.0/mscorlib.dll` (and some more DLLs in the same folder).

So seemingly there is a version mismatch.

[in case it matters, `mono -V` shows `Mono JIT compiler version 2.10.8.1 (Debia 2.10.8.1-1ubuntu2)` ]

Is it possible to build Visual Studio solutions without having to fire up MonoDevelop?

What are the best or most useful configurations for logging with NLog? (These can be simple or complex, as long as they&#39;re useful.) 

I&#39;m thinking of examples like automatically rolling over log files at a certain size, changing the layout (log message) whether or not there is an exception, escalating the log level once an error has occurred, etc.

I&#39;m trying to get a Mono install running on a mac (OS X version 10.10.5), and while the install states that it&#39;s completed successfully, I&#39;m not able to call mono from the terminal.

To install it, I ran uninstallMono.sh as root to ensure we didn&#39;t have any leftover cruft, then ran MonoFramework-MDK-4.0.4.1.macos10.xamarin.x86.pkg. The installer appeared to complete successfully, but an attempt to call mono returns

&gt; -bash: mono: command not found

The mono framework does appear to be installed:

...but it isn&#39;t present in `/usr/bin` and attempting to find its executable using `which mono` returns nothing.


How to install Mono on macOS so mono works in terminal?

Is there a command line I can run to determine what version of Mono I am running on Linux?  I am using Ubuntu and I it is command line only (no X Windows installed).

This may be a dumb question...but I was just looking into the Mono project and they have a section about installing [Mono on Windows][1].  But, since Windows obviously already has the .NET runtime can anyone tell me what exactly is the point of having Mono for Windows?  Does it help with cross platform development or something?

What&#39;s the point of Mono on Windows

I&#39;m new to this, and don&#39;t know where to start.

I want to compile a Visual Studio C# project with Mono on Linux (by command line).

The main.cs file includes these references:

    using System;
    using System.IO;

    using System.ComponentModel;
    using System.Diagnostics;
    using System.Drawing;
    using System.Drawing.Imaging;
    using System.Net;
    using System.Text;
    using System.Text.RegularExpressions;

    using iTextSharp.text.pdf;

I have no idea whether I need to note the references to the compiler, or whether it will pull them in itself, whether it will know where to look for them or not. I&#39;ve never done this before. But I just need to compile this project.

How to compile a Visual Studio C# Project with Mono

I&#39;ve recently read that Mono 3.0 has been released with a C# 5 compiler and support for MVC 4 here:

For the life of me I cannot work out where to get it from as a package for Linux or even Windows.

I&#39;ve tried doing a `apt-get install mono-complete` on Ubuntu 12.10 but it&#39;s installed 2.10.8.1.

I&#39;ve tried installing MonoDevelop 3 on my Windows machine and that&#39;s only presented me with MVC 3 projects and appears to be using the .NET framework.

I&#39;m entirely new to Mono and I&#39;ve Googled everything possible to try and see how this works but am baffled. I&#39;d love to get this working on Linux if possible and try some stuff out.

Can someone shed some light on this or do I need to be looking at building this from source?
