I&#39;ve written a Git post-commit hook and it works correctly.  However, I want to add this hook to apply to all current (and future) Git repositories I am working on.  I tried adding the hook to my `~/.git/hooks/` directory instead of in the hooks directory in the project directory, however, this did not seem to work.

Is there a way to create global Git hooks that will apply to all repositories on my system (without having to copy them into each project directory)?  If not, what would be the best solution going forward -- perhaps a git-init template?





Applying a git post-commit hook to all current and future repositories

The question says it all. Is there a way to perform an action before a merge? I&#39;m guessing there&#39;s a way to make use of a `pre-commit` hook, but I&#39;m not quite sure.

My post commit hook is not running after git.  I have verified that the hook does work if I just run it from the terminal.  The code in the hook is:

I did rename the file to post-commit in ./.git/hooks/ and the permissions are `-rwxr-x-r-x` so I am not sure why it doesn&#39;t work.

Post Commit Hook Not Running

I have run gitlabhq rails server on virtual machine, following 1-6 steps from this tutorial https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlab-recipes/blob/master/install/centos/README.md and starts rails server executing command `sudo -u git -H bundle exec rails s -e production`. After that I created user, using admin tools and created new project under this user. Then I&#39;m trying to push the existing project to this repo as always. But in the last step, `git push origin master` fails with the error 

&gt; [remote rejected] master -&gt; master (pre-receive hook declined)

Additional info:

1) I haven&#39;t activated user (project owner) via email activation link, because I haven&#39;t configured post service on server-side and I didn&#39;t find instructions how to do that in this manual.

2) Gitlab server generates tips how to push project to repo and there is not `repositories/` in path. I mean it generates `git@mygitlabhost:user/repo.git` instead of `git@mygitlabhost:repositories/user/repo.git` which is correct.

3) When i tried to debug it, I opened `pre-receive` script inside repo on server and tried to output variables (there is 3 of them): `refs = ARGF.read`, `key_id  = ENV[&#39;GL_ID&#39;]` and `repo_path = Dir.pwd` and found, that key_id is always empty. Maybe the problem is here... If so, please give me suggestions on how to fix that. Thanks

I&#39;m using Git with my team and would like to remove white space changes from my diffs, logs, merges, etc. I&#39;m assuming that the easiest way to do this would be for Git to automatically remove trailing white space (and other white space errors) from all commits as they are applied.

I have tried to add the following to the `~/.gitconfig` file, but it doesn&#39;t do anything when I commit. Maybe it&#39;s designed for something different. What&#39;s the solution?

I&#39;m using Ruby in case anyone has any Ruby specific ideas. Automatic code formatting before committing would be the next step, but that&#39;s a hard problem and is not really causing a big problem.

I&#39;m looking at a git hook which looks for print statements in Python code.  If a print statement is found, it prevents the git commit. 

I want to override this hook and I was told that there is a command to do so.  I haven&#39;t been able to find it.  Any thoughts?

In my scripts, I often use libraries (mine or others&#39;) that have their own repos. I don&#39;t want to duplicate those in my repo and get stuck with updating them every time a new version comes out. 
However, when somebody clones the repo, it should still work locally and not have broken links.

I wrote my own custom post-merge hook, now I added a &quot;hooks&quot; directory to my main project folder (since git doesn&#39;t track changes in .git/hooks), somewhere I read that I can make a symbolic link from hooks to .git/hooks so I don&#39;t have to copy the file from one folder to the other every time someone changes it so I tried:

We&#39;d like to make a few basic hook scripts that we can all share -- for things like pre-formatting commit messages.  Git has hook scripts for that that are normally stored under `&lt;project&gt;/.git/hooks/`.  However, those scripts are not propagated when people do a clone and they are not version controlled.  

Is there a good way to help everyone get the right hook scripts?  Can I just make those hook scripts point to version controlled scripts in my repo?

This successfully adds them to the repository, but does not add them to the commit.  I&#39;ve also tried using the last two exec lines in a post-commit hook along with the pre-commit inspection, but no good either.

Deploy a project using Git push

We are a team of 60+ developers working on the same product and are moving from SVN to Git and GitHub. We have a process in SVN where in individual files are locked and whenever a developer wants to commit code, he needs to get it unlocked by the owner of the file. Three of us are the owners of the total 150+ files. The unlocking is preceded by a code review. 

In Github, we are planning to use the Fork-Clone model - each project a group of dev is working on will do a fork, each developer will do a clone of the fork, write the code &amp; commit to origin, the lead of the feature will do a pull request to upstream.

Though this seems fine, the problem is when a big project gets delivered, it brings in lots of changes for review and hence, increases the load for the file owners. Also, this might happen in the later cycles of development and hence the project might be jeopardized.

One method we thought might work is to have hooks when the git push is done to the origin (fork). There can be one final review git pull to upstream. 

However, we could not find any github extensions or push hooks for the same. Is there a quick way (read, existing extension) to do this with Github or should we use the same hooks that we would use with git?

Is there a way to lock individual files or directories on fork when using git?

With a one official repository as the remote, and multiple local repositories cloned from it, can a pre-commit hook be scripted on that main repository and be enforced on all clones of it?

I&#39;ve looked at [the githooks manpage][1] but unless I&#39;m missing something I don&#39;t see an option for local, post-push git hooks.  I&#39;d like to have one that updates the api docs on my web server (for which I already have a script) after I push the master branch to the GitHub repo.  Of course I could just write my own script that combines the git push and the api docs run, but that feels somewhat inelegant.

Local executing hook after a git push?

Is there a way to track git hook changes?  I have three hooks that only show up on my machine, not when my other developers fetch.  Trying to `git add` doesn&#39;t work.

I am making changes to a project in a branch that, so far, is known to no one else but me.  However, starting recently, when I `git push` to this project, I now receive this as part of the response:

I have no idea why Git is giving me this message, which I have never seen before.

Even if I *delete* the remote branch (with &quot;`git push origin :&lt;&lt;my branch&gt;&gt;`&quot; I now *still* get this message! (I successfully **deleted** the branch on the remote, but the message remains)
