Is there a way to get current information dynamically from the apps culture settings?  Basically if the user has set the culture to US I want to know the currency is dollars, or if they have it set to UK I want to pound sterling etc... etc..

As I started coding my first app I used NSNumber for money values without thinking twice. Then I thought that maybe c types were enough to deal with my values. Yet, I was advised in the iPhone SDK forum to use NSDecimalNumber, because of its excellent rounding capabilities. 

Not being a mathematician by temperament, I thought that the mantissa/exponent paradigm might be overkill; still, googlin&#39; around, I realised that most talks about money/currency in cocoa were referred to NSDecimalNumber.

Notice that the app I am working on is going to be internationalised, so the option of counting the amount in cents is not really viable, for the monetary structure depends greatly on the locale used.

I am 90% sure that I need to go with NSDecimalNumber, but since I found no unambiguous answer on the web (something like: &quot;if you deal with money, use NSDecimalNumber!&quot;) I thought I&#39;d ask here. Maybe the answer is obvious to most, but I want to be sure before starting a massive re-factoring of my app.

I feed a textbox a string value showing me a balance that need to be formatted like this:

I could use the value.ToString(&quot;c&quot;), but this would put the currency sign in front of it.

Any idea how I would manipulate the string before feeding the textbox to achieve the above formatting?

Format a double value like currency but without the currency sign (C#)

I want to find out the currency locale on user&#39;s iphone programmatically. That means, if user is in US Store, the currency locale should be USD, for Australia, it should be AUD. My purpose of this task is to try to convert the item price listed on our app to be nearly match with the price that AppStore ask. 

For example, if we sell a video 3 usd, and an Australian wants to buy it, then I should show 2.8 AUD in my app screen. It will reduce the calculation in the user over the real price in his country. Does anybody know how to do it?

This is what I&#39;ve decided to do:

 * Store the conversion rates (when applicable) in the transaction table itself, as a float
 * Store the currency in the account table
 * The transaction amount will be a `DECIMAL(19,4)`
 * All calculations using a conversion rate will be handled by my application so I keep control of rounding issues

I don&#39;t think a float for the conversion rate is an issue, since it&#39;s mostly for reference, and I&#39;ll be casting it to a decimal anyway.

We are rewriting our legacy [accounting system][1] in VB.NET and SQL Server. We brought in a new team of .NET/ SQL Programmers to do the rewrite. Most of the system is already completed with the dollar amounts using floats. The legacy system language, I programmed in, did not have a float, so I probably would have used a decimal.

One *con* mentioned in our [daily scrum][2] was you have to be careful when you calculate an amount that returns a result that is over two decimal positions. It sounds like you will have to round the amount to two decimal positions.

Another *con* is all displays and printed amounts have to have a *format statement* that shows two decimal positions. I noticed a few times where this was not done and the amounts did not look correct.  (i.e. 10.2 or 10.2546)

A *pro* is the float-only approach takes up eight bytes on disk where the decimal would take up nine bytes (decimal 12,2).

Is a double really unsuitable for money?

I was trying to make my own class for currencies using longs, but apparently I should use `BigDecimal` instead. Could someone help me get started? What would be the best way to use `BigDecimal`s for dollar currencies, like making it at least but no more than 2 decimal places for the cents, etc. The API for `BigDecimal` is huge, and I don&#39;t know which methods to use. Also, `BigDecimal` has better precision, but isn&#39;t that all lost if it passes through a `double`? if I do new `BigDecimal(24.99)`, how will it be different than using a `double`? Or should I use the constructor that uses a `String` instead?

How to format a Double into Currency - Swift 3

I&#39;m running into a paradigm problem here. I don&#39;t know whether I should store money as a Decimal(), or if I should store it as a string and convert it to a decimal myself. My reasoning is this:

**PayPal requires 2 decimal places**, so if I have a product that is 49 dollars even, PayPal wants to see 49.00 come across the wire. Django&#39;s DecimalField() doesn&#39;t set a decimal amount. It only stores a maximum decimal places amount. So, if you have 49 in there, and you have the field set to 2 decimal places, it&#39;ll still store it as 49. I know that Django is basically type casting when it deserializes back from the database into a Decimal (since Databases don&#39;t have decimal fields), so I&#39;m not completely concerned with the speed issues as much as I am with the design issues of this problem. I want to do what&#39;s best for extensibility.

Or, better yet, does anyone know how to configure a django DecimalField() to always format with the TWO_PLACES formatting style.

I&#39;m finding it difficult to find any discussion on best practices for dealing with multiple currencies. Can anyone provide some insight or links to help?

I understand there are a number of ways to do this - either transactionally where you store the value entered as is, or functionally where you convert to a base rate. In both cases the exchange rate is needed to be stored that covers that transactions time for each currency that it may need to be converted to in the future.

I like the flexibility of the transactional approach, which allows old exchange rate info to be entered at a later date, but probably has more overhead (as you have to store more exchange rate data) than the functional approach.

Performance &amp; Scalability are major factors. We have (all .net) a win &amp; web client, a reports suite and a set of web services that provide functionality to a database back-end. I can cache the exchange rate information somewhere (e.g. on client) if required.

I write currency trading applications for living, so I have to work with monetary values (it&#39;s a shame that Java still doesn&#39;t have decimal float type and has nothing to support arbitrary-precision monetary calculations). &quot;Use BigDecimal!&quot; — you might say. I do. But now I have some code where performance **is** an issue, and BigDecimal is more than 1000 times (!) slower than `double` primitives.

The calculations are very simple: what the system does is calculating `a = (1/b) * c` many many times (where `a`, `b` and `c` are fixed-point values). The problem, however, lies with this `(1/b)`. I can&#39;t use fixed point arithmetic because there is no fixed point. And `BigDecimal result = a.multiply(BigDecimal.ONE.divide(b).multiply(c)` is not only ugly, but sluggishly slow.

What can I use to replace BigDecimal? I need at least 10x performance increase. I found otherwise excellent [JScience library][1] which has arbitrary-precision arithmetics, but it&#39;s even slower than BigDecimal.
