I am on Windows, and the error has to do with quotes, braces, and globbing. I tried escaping quotes by preceding them with a backslash, with no luck.

Personally, I&#39;ve always concatenated my strings, because I use [UEStudio][1], and it highlights PHP variables with a different color when concatenated. However, when the variable is not broken out, it does not. It just makes it easier for my eyes to find PHP variables in long strings, etc.

While watching thenewbostons tutorial on basic java, he teaches us to do if statements like this.(Notice the curly Braces)

So I tried removing the curly braces

And it still works! Since I&#39;m new to java, I don&#39;t know why that works. And I want to know if removing(or adding) the curly braces give any benefits/disadvantages.

In Java the following is completely valid:

    else

I personally don&#39;t like it at all. I like all my IF statements to have braces:

    if (x == null) {
        Y();
    } else {

    }
The eclipse formatter is wonderful and can beautify my code in many other ways.

So hopefully this question has value in tying f-string searchers to this answer.

How to escape curly-brackets in f-strings?

However, I think this is more readable:

    if(statement){
        do this;
    }else{
        do this;
    }

Since both methods work, is this simply a matter of preference which to use or would one way be recommended over the other?

What do curly braces in Java mean by themselves?

In Visual Studio while designing MVC views (in `.aspx` or `.ascx` files), I often use `if` statements. When I auto-format (&lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;K&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;D&lt;/kbd&gt;), Visual Studio wraps the braces in this really ugly and hard to read way:

&lt;% if (Model.UserIsAuthenticated)
    { %&gt;
       (some HTML goes here...)
&lt;% } %&gt;
```

Is there any way to make Visual Studio auto-format like this instead:

```csharp
&lt;% if (Model.UserIsAuthenticated) { %&gt;
       (some HTML goes here...)
&lt;% } %&gt;
```

Or is there a better way to do this? I don&#39;t want to use Razor quite yet, but it looks like it would solve my problem. I&#39;m using VS2010 with Resharper 5, if that helps.

Trying to figure out Zend Framework and came across the following syntax:

    $this-&gt;_session-&gt;{&#39;user_id&#39;}

I have never seen the curly braces syntax used to access what appears to be a member variable. How is it different than

    $this-&gt;_session-&gt;user_id

I&#39;m assuming that the _session is irrelevant, but including it in the question since it may not be.

Are the curly braces just a cleanliness convention that attempts to wrap the compound variable name user_id? Or is it some kind of a special accessor?

Any pointers into TFM so I can R up would be humbly appreciated.

Why enclose blocks of C code in curly braces?

I just saw some code in bash that I didn&#39;t quite understand.  Being the newbie bash scripter, I&#39;m not sure what&#39;s going on.  

    echo ${0##/*}
    echo ${0}

I don&#39;t really see a difference in output in these two commands (prints the script name).  Is that `#` just a comment?  And what&#39;s with the `/*`.  If it is a comment, how come it doesn&#39;t interfere with the closing `}` brace?

I am currently coding a function with a `foreach` loop with just a single statement inside. I tried to omit the curly braces as you can do in if/else control structures and it works. No errors.

    foreach($var as $value)
    	$arr[] = $value;

Now I tried to use it the same way but putting an if/else block inside it. Again, working and no errors.

    foreach($var as $value)
    	if(1 + 1 == 2) {
    		$arr[] = $value;
    	};

Then, I thought like &quot;why is this working?&quot; and omitted the closing semicolon. Still working. So I tried to use the if/else statement without curly braces inside the foreach loop and again, still working and no errors. But is the foreach loop really closed/ended right now?

    foreach($var as $value)
    	if(1 + 1 == 2)
    		$arr[] = $value;

At least I omitted the closing semicolon again and (as expected) a parsing error occurred.

So my big question is: When can I omit the curly braces and in which structure/loop/function? I know that I can definitely do so in `if` and `else`. But what about `while`, `for` and `foreach`?

And yes, I know that it is not safe, smart, whatever to code without curly braces and there are shorthands like `$condition ? true : false;` and `if: doSomething(); endif;`, `endfor;` and `endforeach;`. I don&#39;t wanna learn about shorthands I just want to understand the conditions about when and where it is possible to omit the curly brackets.
