## Conclusion

Well, obviously, there&#39;s no right answer to this question, but here&#39;s what I&#39;m choosing to go with currently:

For unit testing, I used to use [OCUnit/SenTestingKit][50] in XCode 4. It&#39;s simple &amp; solid. But, I prefer the language of BDD over TDD ([Why is RSpec better than Test::Unit][51]?) because our words create our world. So now, I use [Kiwi with ARC][52] &amp; [Kiwi code completion/autocompletion][53]. I prefer Kiwi over Cedar because it&#39;s built on top of OCUnit and comes with RSpec-style matchers &amp; mocks/stubs. UPDATE: I&#39;m now looking into OCMock because, currently, [Kiwi doesn&#39;t support stubbing toll-free bridged objects][54].

For acceptance testing, I use UI Automation because it&#39;s awesome. It lets you record each test case, making writing tests automatic. Also, Apple develops it, and so it has a promising future. It also works on the device and from Instruments, which allows for other cool features, like showing memory leaks. Unfortunately, with UI Automation, I don&#39;t know how to run Objective-C code, but with Frank &amp; iCuke you can. So, I&#39;ll just test the lower-level Objective-C stuff with unit tests, or create `UIButton`s only for the [`TEST` build configuration][55], which when clicked, will run Objective-C code.

iOS Tests/Specs TDD/BDD and Integration &amp; Acceptance Testing

When should I use specs for Rails application and when Cucumber (former rspec-stories)? I know how both work and actively use specs, of course. But it still feels weird to use Cucumber. My current view on this, is that it&#39;s convenient to use Cucumber when you&#39;re implementing application for the client and do not understand how the whole system is supposed to work yet.

But what if I&#39;m doing my own project? For most of the time, I know how the parts of the system interact. All I need to do is to write a bunch of unit-tests. What are the possible situations when I would need Cucumber then?

And, as a corresponding second question: do I have to write specs if I write Cucumber stories? Wouldn&#39;t it be double-testing of the same thing?

RSpec vs Cucumber (RSpec stories)

I have 6 months of Rails development experience. I&#39;ve built a web application that&#39;s in use now with authentication and authorization and postgresql db.

I&#39;m moving on to my second Rails application but this time, after lessons learnt, I would like to develop it using TDD, since I noticed its a lot easier to scale it and fix bugs. It&#39;s slow to develop but in the long run its much easier to deal with.

I have heard of Rspec and Cucumber but am thoroughly confused by them.

I would like to know what the difference is between RSpec and Cucumber and what they are used for.

It would also be useful to know if, from the perspective of a beginner (who is also the sole developer) whether a testing framework is really needed.

I want to reuse some Cucumber steps but can&#39;t seem to find the right way.

I want to write a step like:

    Given /^I login with (.*) credentials$/ |type|

But then have another step like:

    Given /^I login successfully$

    end

So in testing user authentication I can use the former, but most other places, I can use the latter, and not actually have to repro code.

Is there a way to call that other step, or do I just put the logic in a helper method, and call said method from each task (basically a method extraction refactoring, which, after reading my question makes me believe that&#39;s actually the best way anyway)?

Reuse Cucumber steps

I&#39;m working with many jQuery plugins, that often create DOM elements without id or other identification properties, and the only way to get them in Capybara (for clicking for example) - is to get their neighbor (another child of its ancestor) first. I have a User model that belongs to a Group. Group must have unique name attribute. User factory and group factory are defined as:

    Factory.define :user do |f|
      f.association :group, :factory =&gt; :group

    end

    Factory.define :group do |f|

When the first user is created a new group is created too. When I try to create a second user it fails because it wants to create same group again.

Is there a way to tell factory_girl association method to look first for an existing record?

Note: I did try to define a method to handle this, but then I cannot use f.association. I would like to be able to use it in Cucumber scenarios like this:

    Given the following user exists:
      | Email          | Group         |
      | test@email.com | Name: mygroup |

and this can only work if association is used in Factory definition.

I&#39;ve tried Cucumber for a few projects a couple of years ago and am looking to give it another go. I don&#39;t really need another &quot;Beginning Cucumber&quot; article. To pass variables between steps I have the step methods belong to the same class, and use fields of the class for the passed information.

Here is an example as follows:
