I am getting timeouts using the Entity Framework (EF) when using a function import that takes over 30 seconds to complete. I tried the following and have not been able to resolve this issue:

I added `Default Command Timeout=300000` to the connection string in the *App.Config* file in the project that has the EDMX file as suggested [here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1718739/entity-framework-with-mysql-timeout-expired-while-generating-model).

This is what my connection string looks like:

I tried setting the CommandTimeout in my repository directly like so:

What else can I do to get the EF from timing out? This only happens for very large datasets. Everything works fine with small datasets.

Here is one of the errors I&#39;m getting:

See the inner exception for details. ---&gt; System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

OK - I got this working and it&#39;s silly what happened. I had both the connection string with `Default Command Timeout=300000` and the CommandTimeout set to 180. When I removed the `Default Command Timeout` from the connection string, it worked. So the answer is to manually set the CommandTimeout in your repository on your context object like so:

    this.context.CommandTimeout = 180;

Apparently setting the timeout settings in the connection string has no effect on it.



Entity Framework Timeouts

I have a Java application that uses JDBC (via JPA) that was connecting to a development database using hostname, port and Oracle SID, like this:

XYZ was the Oracle SID. Now I need to connect to a different Oracle database that does not use a SID, but uses an Oracle &quot;Service Name&quot; instead.

Get ConnectionString from appsettings.json instead of being hardcoded in .NET Core 2.0 App

I have an asp.net-mvc application with the default membership database. I am accessing it by ADO.NET Entity Framework. 

Now I want to move it to IIS, but several problems showed up. I had to install SQL Server Management Studio, Create new DB, import there all the data from the previous .MDF file. Only thing left to do (as far a I know) is to change to connection string. However, I am not really experienced with this and keep getting the Keyword not supported: &#39;data source&#39;. exception. Here is my connection string:

I&#39;m using SQLalchemy for a Python project, and I want to have a tidy connection string to access my database. So for example:

The problem is my password contains a sequence of special characters that get interpreted as delimiters when I try to connect. 

I realize that I could just use `engine.URL.create()` and then pass my credentials like this:

Writing a connection string when password contains special characters

I&#39;m trying to do the Code First Walkthrough of the entity framework ( http://blogs.msdn.com/b/adonet/archive/2011/09/28/ef-4-2-code-first-walkthrough.aspx ).

I have the latest SQL Server Express and when I check my versions available via command line (*sqllocaldb info*): I see localdbApp1 and v11.0.  When I try to run the walkthrough with a few minor tweaks, I get a can&#39;t connect error.

My app.config looks like this:

connectionStrings configSource in App.config not working

I&#39;m using Visual Studio 2017 for mac with dotnet Core and EF Core. After setting up the mssql image in Docker container , I was trying to add the connection string  but throwing connection error. I tried with different options such as ip address , container name , host name etc. as server name but none of them worked. 

     &quot;Default&quot;: &quot;Server=172.17.0.2; Database=ERPDb; User=sa; Password =******;&quot;

with container name 

     &quot;Default&quot;: &quot;Server=ecstatic_hermann; Database=ERPDb; User=sa; Password=******;&quot;

with hostname :

     &quot;Default&quot;: &quot;Server=f45840a59623; Database=ERPDb; User=sa; Password=******;&quot;

While connecting through using localhost in Terminal its successfully connecting 

    $ mssql -s localhost -p Technocrat123
    Connecting to localhost...done
    
    sql-cli version 0.6.2
    Enter &quot;.help&quot; for usage hints.
But when running the application the connection fails.

If using localhost then error is 

    Login failed for user &#39;&#39;. Reason: An attempt to login using SQL authentication failed. Server is configured for Integrated authentication only.



connection string for sqlserver in Docker container

We are using ASP.NET (Framework 2) and setting database connection strings (SQL2005) in web.config.

We are currently using &quot;`providerName=SqlServer`&quot;.

All our data accesses are done using `System.Data.SqlClient` - should we therefore change to `providerName=System.Data.SqlClient`? I find many examples of this providerName on the web, but very little explaining what providerName=SqlServer actually means.

Is there a difference? I&#39;m worried that the providerName we currently specify is actually referencing a legacy (and maybe slower) client, or is there an even more efficient client than SqlClient for use with ASP.NET?

I&#39;m working on a small side-project and I&#39;m using connection strings and also api keys and values that should not be seen or used by other people. I use a public GitHub account for source control. What is the usual method for using source control when these values are in plain text in web.config?

Do I need to remove the values manually before checking in code?

For debugging purpose I&#39;d like to know ways to test OLE DB connection string quickly.

I&#39;ve found [this free software][1], it works on my machine, tested successfully.

Is there a even quicker way to do so, maybe from command line on Windows? Because most of the time, it is the client rather than me that would do this task, so I prefer a &quot;zero-installation&quot; approach that would impact their system the least.

Quick ways to test OLE DB Connection String

I just install EF 4.3 and trying to upgrade my project with migration. however I am getting issues with trying to execute `add-migration initial` to my project via Package Manager console. 

It is throwing any exception now `No connection string named &#39;MyApplicationEntities&#39; could be found in the application config file.` 

Now my config has it all 

    
    &lt;connectionStrings&gt;
    &lt;add name=&quot;MyApplicationEntities&quot; 
         connectionString=&quot;metadata=res://*/DataModel.csdl|res://*/DataModel.ssdl|res://*/DataModel.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string=&amp;quot;data source=localhost;initial catalog=MyApplicationEntitiesDB;integrated security=True;multipleactiveresultsets=True;App=EntityFramework&amp;quot;&quot; 
         providerName=&quot;System.Data.EntityClient&quot; /&gt;

I am not sure what is the issue is it a bug in EF 4.3 or there is something I am not doing right.

Anyone got an answer.
