How can I get the byte array from some string which can contain numbers, letters and so on?
If you are familiar with Java, I am looking for the same functionality of the getBytes() method.

I tried a snippet like this one:

    for($i = 0; $i &lt; strlen($msg); $i++){
    	$data.=ord($msg[$i]);
            //or $data[]=ord($msg[$1]); 
    }

but without success, so any kind of help will be appreciated.

PS: Why do I need this at all!? Well, I need to send a byte array via fputs() to a server written in Java... 

String to byte array in php

I have to print some data on thermal bluetooth printer, I&#39;m doing with this:
    
    String message=&quot;abcdef any message 12345&quot;;
    byte[] send;
    send = message.getBytes();
    mService.write(send);

It works well for text, but not for images. I think I need to get the `byte[]` of the image data. I tried getting the data of the image this way:
 
    Bitmap bitmap=BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.qrcode);
    ByteArrayOutputStream stream=new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    bitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 90, stream);
    byte[] image=stream.toByteArray();

Unfortunately the printer prints a lot of strange characters (approx. 50 cm of paper). I don&#39;t know how to print the image. 

I would like to try getting the pixels of the bitmap and next converting it to a `byte[]` and sending it, but i don&#39;t know how to do it.

How can I print an image on a Bluetooth printer in Android?

So I have a `byte [] array` which I have created in my android app. I want to use SharedPreferences from android to store it and retrieve it back again when I start my app.

I am trying to: 
  
   1. Generate a byte array. 
   2. Convert that byte array to base64
   3. Convert that base64 string back to a byte array. 

I&#39;ve tried out a few solutions, for example those in this [question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/8645088/how-to-decode-a-string-of-text-from-a-base64-to-a-byte-array-and-the-get-the-st).

For some reason the initial and final byte arrays do not match. Here is the code used:

I have a bitmap that I want to send to the server by encoding it to base64 but I do not want to compress the image in either png or jpeg.

Now what I was previously doing was.

Now I just dont want to use any compression nor any format plain simple byte[] from bitmap that I can encode and send to the server.

Currently I am using this:

I have been experimenting with using UUIDs as database keys.  I want to take up the least amount of bytes as possible, while still keeping the UUID representation human readable.

I think that I have gotten it down to 22 bytes using base64 and removing some trailing &quot;==&quot; that seem to be unnecessary to store for my purposes.  Are there any flaws with this approach?  

Basically my test code does a bunch of conversions to get the UUID down to a 22 byte String, then converts it back into a UUID.

Storing UUID as base64 String

I&#39;m writing a web application in Google app Engine. It allows people to basically edit html code that gets stored as an `.html` file in the blobstore.

I&#39;m using fetchData to return a `byte[]` of all the characters in the file. I&#39;m trying to print to an html &lt;textarea&gt; in order for the user to edit the html code. Everything works great!

Here&#39;s my only problem now:

The byte array is having some issues when converting back to a string. Smart quotes and a couple of characters are coming out looking funky. (?&#39;s or japanese symbols etc.) Specifically it&#39;s several bytes I&#39;m seeing that have negative values which are causing the problem.

The smart quotes are coming back as `-108` and `-109` in the byte array. Why is this and how can I decode the negative bytes to show the correct character encoding?

I have several use cases for examples:

 1. A function returns a new `[]byte`. Since the slice capacity is fixed, what reason is there to not return a string?
 2. `[]byte` are not printed as nicely as `string` by default, so I often find myself casting to `string` for logging purposes. Should it always have been a `string`?

Do you see any problem with using a byte array as Map key? I could also do `new String(byte[])` and hash by `String` but it is more straightforward to use `byte[]`.

I thought .net had some kind of easy conversion method to use for converting an int into a byte array? I did a quick search and all solutions are bit masking/shifting one byte at a time, like &quot;the good ol days&quot;.

I&#39;m going to be storing a large array of byte values (most likely over a million) in Javascript. If I use a normal array with normal numbers, that will take 8 MB, because numbers are stored as IEEE doubles, but if I can store it as bytes, it will be only 1 MB.

I&#39;d like to avoid wasting that much space for obvious reasons. Is there a way to store bytes as bytes instead of doubles? Browser compatibility isn&#39;t an issue for me, as long as it works in Chrome. This is in HTML5, if that makes a difference.

I need to convert objects to a byte[] to be stored in the Tokyo Cabinet key-value store.
I also need to unbyte the byte[] to an Object when reading from the key-value store.

Are there any packages out there that will help me with this task? Or would the best solution to implement it myself?

There are a lot of questions with this topic, the same solution, but this doesn&#39;t work for me. I have a simple test with an encryption. The encryption/decryption itself works (as long as I handle this test with the byte array itself and not as Strings). The problem is that don&#39;t want to handle it as byte array but as String, but when I encode the byte array to string and back, the resulting byte array differs from the original byte array, so the decryption doesn&#39;t work anymore. I tried the following parameters in the corresponding string methods: UTF-8, UTF8, UTF-16, UTF8. None of them work. The resulting byte array differs from the original. Any ideas why this is so?
